I've been looking forward to going to Vegas for weeks. I was going there for the Comdex trade show, full of gadgets and electronics. I got my automatic upgrade notice from America West a few days before, so I was also looking forward to the quick trip from San Diego. My original plan was to fly SAN-LAS-SAN, but I ended up going SAN-PHX-LAS-SAN. I got HP to rebook me the on an earlier flight without penalty, so that's why I had to goto PHX.
I was able to snatch a first class seat even though I changed flights the same day, which was nice. The plane was an A320, and it looked very new. The plane was completely full. Before take off I was offered a drink, and was temped to get a screw driver but didn't feel like getting carded. I went with Pepsi.
Takeoff was quick, I never have flow an airbus (I always fly American) and I found the engine noise to be quite strange- somewhat like a buzz saw at full speed.
The flight was about 55 minutes, but the FA was nice and gave me at least three refills on my Pepsi. She also handed out a bag of mixed nuts, which were much better than the standard HP pretzels.
Once I landed, I met my uncle in the PHX airport. (He came from OAK) I asked for us to be put on standby for first class, but the plane was a 737 with only 8 first class seats, so I wasn't surprised when we didn't get them.
The plane was only about half full, which made the short flight even better. Nothing out of the ordinary, a quick drink and a toss of pretzels and we were in Vegas.
Comdex was lots of fun. Unfortunately I could only attend Monday, but I also got to see Bill Gates speak, and he gave a great presentation. I also saw Ballmer walking around the arena floor, it's cool that a billionaire would mingle with the common folk.
I was leaving in the afternoon. We got to the airport about 2.5 hours in case of security, but found the wait to be minimal (as it was in OAK and SAN). since I got there so early, I asked about going on an earlier flight. The agent found me a first class seat on an earlier flight, which saved me about 2 hours of waiting in the Vegas airport. (sorry guys, I'm not a big fan of wandering the airport).
The Plane was an A319, with 12 first class seats. The whole plane was full, and I wouldn't have been able to take the flight if it wasn't for my ill-gotten platinum status and first class upgrade (he he)...
The FA was very nice, she got all the first class passengers names and used our names during the flight. There were nuts waiting for us when we got on the plane, and she also asked us for drinks. During the flight we got more nuts, and a few refills.
America West does a really nice job on their short hall service. I think their planes are nicer than Americans, and their FA's are also very friendly. I hope HP stays in business long enough for me to try them again!

HP has applied for 400 million in federal loans and if its approved local and state govts as well as lenders have agreed to take concessions. Probably reduced gate leases in Phoenix and on aircraft and such. But this will give HP enough cash to last 2 years or so at its current burn rate.
