A Month Of Domestic Flying... Some Notes.

I have just taken routine domestic flights recently... just a few notes from my last couple of trips:

6 October 2001
Northwest 467 JAX-DTW DC-9-30
Not a good impression of Northwest to start... terrible JAX station personnel. I arrived at 6:25am for the 8:20am flight. The check-in line was very long. I walked up to the First Class line (as I was traveling on a confirmed F class paid ticket) and stood for about five minutes without being served by either of the two agents. Finally one looked over at me (after calling somebody from coach line in front of me) and told me that they were not doing separate F class check-in and told me to go to the end of the coach line. I didn't make a scene but the man behind me in the F line did enough complaining for the both of us. The line was out the door onto the curb for the full flight and I finally got up to the counter an hour later. Pitiful for just checking in ONE DC-9 full of passengers. On top of that both agents working the counter were rude. I was informed of yet another Northwest schedule change and she didn't want to rebook me for the return leg that was cancelled but I pressed the subject saying that doing so on my return two days later would be too late. She did put priority tags on my checked bag (which I had to check because apparently my laptop case which is small enough for just my laptop and a book was not considered a briefcase). Flight boarded late due to lack of gate staffing. F was half full. Meal was breakfast consisting of plain Cheerios, a bagel, yogurt, and a banana with the note saying why there wasn't any silverware. Great service by two flight attendants. On time into DTW.

Northwest 775 DTW-MSP A320
Boarded on time. Preboarded First and about fifteen NW crew members deadheading in the back. At that point the Captain said we had a problem with the landing gear and had to offload all pax and our checked luggage. We got off the airplane. One hour later, after many people were rebooked, we got back on the airplane and trailed the next flight to MSP out of the alleyway. Pre-takeoff drinks offered. Two rounds of drinks in the air along with the choice of peanuts or pretzels. About 70 minutes late into MSP. Seats were old style. Row 4 recline was fine due to lack of a real bulkhead.

Northwest 747 MSP-OMA DC-9-30
I had to run of course from G twenty-something to F15 (the usual Omaha gate). Light load with three in F and about 40 in coach. Three flight attendants on board. Pre-takeoff drinks were served (OJ or water) along with some pretzel sticks. In the air, one F/A stayed in First and constantly refilled drinks for the 45 minute flight. On-time into OMA where my bag was the first one out on the carrousel. They must obey priority tags at OMA as my bag was first out followed by five or six more with priority tags.

Northwest 138 OMA-MSP DC-9-50
Great agents at Omaha with separate F class line. On-time boarding. Pre-takeoff drinks were offered to all five of us in the front cabin. Bulkhead row was okay for legroom, could have been better. Typical drinks/peanuts/pretzels in the air.

Northwest 760 MSP-DTW B757-200
Very full hub-to-hub shuttle flight. Flight was on Northwest's oldest B757. This plane was a piece of crap if I've ever seen one. Even the DC-9's had it beat on the interiors. Ratty seats with broken armrests and non-functional video monitors. No pre-takeoff drinks offered. In the air, due to understaffing, no flight attendant could stay in First the whole time as coach was full and needed everyone to get the service out. One refill offered prior to descent along with an offer of more peanuts or pretzels.

Northwest 466 DTW-JAX DC-9-30
Departed out of the mass of gates on the end of C concourse. Who needs a P.A. system when the gate agent can just yell? I got on the airplane when she screamed "FIRST CLASS TO JACKSONVILLE CAN BOARD NOW" across the gate area. Two very young flight attendants delivered great service. Pre-takeoff drinks were offered (OJ or water) and in the air one F/A took first while the other took coach so drinks were topped off the whole way to JAX. This flight was full as well. Priority tags mean nothing at JAX. Jacksonville has to have the slowest baggage delivery in the nation. I waited 25 minutes for bags to start, and then mine was one of the last on the belt.

Southwest 1557 JAX-TPA B737-200
I got a boarding card in the forties. Thankfully this was the first leg of this flight so I was able to grab an aisle seat in row nine. Light load down to Tampa with the typicaly small cup of soda and two bags of peanuts. I didn't even get a song on this flight.

Southwest 2041 TPA-JAX B737-200
I was able to get a card in the first boarding group and an aisle seat in row five. Lead F/A kept joking on board the intercom how she'd "really love to get home tonight so let's get seated as quickly as possible." Full flight up to JAX with typical WN service. On-time as always.

TWA 111 JAX-STL MD-80
Due to a death in the family, I had to fly home on short notice. My father arranged for my ticket with frequent flyer miles about 8 hours prior to my 6:30am departure. TWA moved in with American at JAX about a month prior. Check-in line was long but moved fast with very friendly TWA employees. Agent apologized for my loss (apparently the fact that I was going to a funeral so do not bump me was written in my record by the Aviators res. agent). The jetway that TWA must use in the morning is broken so it was a "ramp boarding" this morning. Boarding was from the front to back of the aircraft. Down the American Eagle staircase, out on the ramp, walk around the MD-80's wing, and go up the tailcone stairs. Quite an interesting experience with a lot of noise as the AirTran DC-9 at the next gate powered up its engines. Second row in coach, aisle seat, two-seat side was my seat... great legroom as the AA MRTC program has been implemented. Only about 25% full in either class this morning. Service was a lemon muffin with beverage service. On-time into STL.

TWA 525 STL-OMA MD-80
Same row, aisle seat on the other side for this flight. Quick beverage service. On-time into Omaha. The flight attendants were great (all four of them). They were a senior crew who really made me enjoy flying TWA. As the lead said in his announcements, "If an airline's crews don't treat you this good, you shouldn't fly them." They certainly made me look forward to my next TWA flight. Bags in Omaha were quick out as always.

TWA 536 OMA-STL MD-80
Flight was only half full. I had the bulkhead row of coach to myself. Beverage service was offered with pretzels as usual. On-time into St. Louis.

TWA 406 STL-JAX MD-80
I had the bulkhead row to myself again. The crew was young on this flight but gave great service. They were very friendly, doing two drink services. Load was about 50%. First received a snack box and from what I could see it was just a roast beef sandwich, some potato chips, and a cup of pasta salad. There was some confusion at JAX as the flight attendants were expecting to use the jetway as normal, but the ground crew told them they were to use the rear airstairs as the jetway was still broken. Bags were slow as always at JAX.

TWA 111 JAX-STL MD-80
Jetway still broken. On-time flight with same muffin and drink as before. This flight was packed full. I managed to get the exit row aisle seat on the two-seat side at check-in. Legroom was excellent. The crew was all smiles.

TWA 406 STL-JAX MD-80
Full flight again. Great flight attendants served pretzels and sodas and went around asking if anybody wanted a refill. I didn't as they gave out the whole can the first time around. Thankfully no checked luggage so I was able to get out of the airport quickly.

Back to TWA again next week....

Your experience with NWA gels with mine. They are either very good or putrid. There's no middle consistency.

Just an observation...it sounds like TWA has planes manned by content people thankful to be employed. What a sad thing that the proud name only has weeks to live.....I REALLY hope that AA doesn't decide in a few years to raise capital and sell off the name to some fly by night investment group looking to run 30 year old DC-9s from Lubbock to JFK or some nonsense. For all of its' peculiar success, the fact that PAN AM is now king of the skies over ...Allentown and Portsmouth is .....well, cheesy... compared to their former stomping grounds of Paris and Hong Kong and Sydney and Rio.

BTW my condolences on your loss. Looking forward to hear more of your Tee-Way reports as they enter the home stretch.

Aw that sucks going away to university and then your parents move. Didn't happen to me, but it did to a few people I know. I would think it would totally screw up one's perception of where 'home' is.

I do hate flying on Southwest. They were the only option on short notice though at a good price. Also had a voucher for some money off on them, so one of the directions was free.

I think Southwest is a great company. I just don't enjoy being a passenger on them for extended periods of time. The short flight to Tampa was just up and down basically and wasn't too bad. Taking trips with then that require connections.... count me out.
