During my last Canadian travel with KLM, I booked a flight from Montreal to Toronto. Even if I am a Miles & More Senator member, which means a Star Alliance gold, I still chose to fly with an other airline than Air Canada : Porter Airlines.

Porter Airlines is a very young company, operating direct flights from/to Toronto City Centre Airport with Dash 8 Q400 and a full service included.

Here is the bird...

The gate 7 at Montreal Dorval Airport is moslty operated by Porter Airlines, with a finger deck to the Dash.

Some other birds in Montreal, here's a Dash 8-100 of Jazz, the Air Canada regional Airlines

CRJ-705 of Jazz : it's a special version of the CRJ 900 for Jazz, with business class and ptv !

E-jet of United Airlines : they operates flights to Chicago and Washington

B737-800 of canjet : it's an aircraft leased from the german airlines TUIfly, with the old TUIfly livery and Canjet logo. Some flight deck crew are also from TUIfly. They operate holiday flights in cooperation with Air Transat to the carribeans holiday ressorts

B737 NG of westjet, the canadian low fare airlines... In fact, the fare are approximatively the same as Air Canada !

Air Canda flights to Toronto, on the Rapidair line : a E190 and a E170

It's now time to board the Dash 8. The flight was totally full on this Sunday morning !

Take off on a sunny day !!

Cabin view. The service began shortly after take-off

A very nice weather for this short flight

Very good onboard service !

... water bottle with the airline's colors

... and FREE wine !!

Snack box

The lake of Ontario

The approach into the Toronto City Centre Airport is very nice... for passengers seated on the right side  Sad well, it's a reason to fly soon again with porter !!

Welcome to Toronto City !!

There are also a general aviation apron. Exepted for Medical flights, jet flights are not allowed. The general aviation activities are also operated by Porter

Welcome to Toronto. The gate has a special conception. It's not necessary to go outside for boarding. Good idea, especially for the cold canadian winter !

View at the boarding gate : well, it's a lounge ! But available to all passengers !!

The Airport is very close and easy. The luggage delivery is very quick, a porter staff is present to help. Just at the exit, the check in area

And the exit to the ferry.

The old terminal

The city of Toronto is really near !

The crossing is just 120 meters !

Ferry shuttle every 5 to 10 minutes

A very nice view on Toronto city during the short crossing !

Thank you Porter ! I hope to be on board again very soon !!

For only 79 CAD (excl.tax) one way, the service is very good. Everywhere the staff is very friendly, totally customer oriented ! All services are included in the price, 2 baggage of 23kg, drinks and snack. The leather seats are very comfortable with a generous pitch. The service at their home base, Toronto City is very good, with a practical airport and a free bus shuttle to the main station, where it's also possible to do the check in.

Porter is a regional airline, with business class service, for a good price, they are not more expensive than Air Canada or WestJet in Economy class. For regular passengers, pass with 10 prepaid flights are available, and a simple frequent flyer program.

For me, it's the best airline I've ever flown. The service quality does not have it's equivalent in Europe.

For the complet trip report, KLM flight CDG AMS YUL and back YYZ AMS CDG, follow this link :

Thank you for reading this trip report. I hope it was interesting to you.

Very nice report, and good pics again!

I like the food box and flying the Q400 seems comfortable with this airline.
Landing at the city airport is also very convenient.

I'll put my money on VG (VLM Airlines), they operate F50's and give full service. Basic non-flexible economy class fares can be obtained for very reasonable prices, even one-way legs. Includes full meal and beverage service, leather seats, frequent flyer programm and convenient airports (ANR, RTM, LCY etc.)

But, for my domestic travel in Canada, maybe in the future, I will for sure take another look into this airline.

Wow! Seems like a great airline, as said by Airbuseric, the Canadian variant of VLM airlines (or atleast that was the first thing that sprung to my mind!). I really like these small, fully customer oriented airlines that fly domestically. I wish them luck and success!

ALLARD.

ALLARD. First flight: KLM DC-10, LLW - AMS.

Looks like a fantastic airline! Very classy the glass for the wine!
I must confess I don't understand how the Aerobridge in Montreal attached to the aircraft with the stair in place?
Looks like a great gate concept in torronto!! Does the seal inflate around the aircraf?

Very nice report, great to get an impression of Porter Airlines. The carrier's product looks good, but not sensational. As Eric already mentioned, VLM is an airline which offers a similar product. And I'd refer to Air Dolomiti, too.

Yes, definitely great to have PTVs on a CRJ - but now AC should find a solution to get the continuous IFE problems fixed.

Very good trip report and pictures!!! I've always wondered what Porter is like, good to finally see a report on them. Btw - that sure is one interesting looking jetbridge! Is that the only one they have there like that?

Will you watch the Cleveland Browns and the Detroit Lions on Sunday? Only if coach Eric Mangini resigned after a loss.

VLM is not an Air France company now ? They still have their specificitys ? I've see that the AMS LCY line is now operated by Cityjet.

Thanks ! It was the sunday 22 march 2009, flight PD408 YUL 1215 YTZ 1325

Quoting Smi0006 (Reply 4):

At the end of the fingerdeck, you have 3 or 4 step to go down to the Aircraft. I didn't look the detail, but the bridge is not totaly attached to the aircraft.

Quoting Smi0006 (Reply 4):

Yes, it's hermetic between the aircraft and the gate. You have just to climb to the aircraft. There are also a door for the carriage with the luggage delivery at the aircraft

Quoting PlaneHunter (Reply 5):

Air Dolomiti is very good. But the specificity of Porter is not only the board service, but also the city center airport concept !

Quoting PlaneHunter (Reply 5):

I find more important to have food and snack service included on all flights, specially on transcontinental flights (for exemple YUL LAX 6 hours) than PTV on 1 or 2 hours flights !

Quoting Mke717spotter (Reply 6):

Well... i never see a Dash in a finger deck !! In europe the commuter aircrafts never use the jetbridge !

There are some nice small airlines in Europe with great service, apart from VLM I can think of Eastern Airways, Blue Islands, OLT, Air Nostrum, Portugalia, Darwin Air, Baboo, Carpatair and Air Dolomiti which surpass the bigger airlines who fly longer sectors.

nobody has ever died from hard work, but why take the risk?

There were plans to build a bridge a few years ago, but the current mayor of Toronto was elected on the pledge to scrap that plan. He has taken a strong stand against the island airport in general.

The problem is that there are a lot of new condos along the waterfront, with residents who don't like the idea of having an airport outside their window. At the same time most of the businesspeople who work in the downtown core, who are Porter's target market, live further out in the residential neighborhoods around downtown or in the suburbs. There is a disconnect between the people who live near the airport and those that are most likely to use it.

In other words, it's all about politics, not aviation.

A friend who live in Canada said me that with the actual expension, the preclearance station is planed in Toronto City. I don't have more details about that.

I'm not sure how PD does it, but with Air Canada and the CRJs, what they often do is pull the plane up to the gate, drop the door and then move the jetbridge in above the door until it almost makes contact with the plane and then have a little metallic bridge cover the gap between the plane and the jetbridge.

Yes. Porter is expanding their terminal facilities and will include US Preclearance.
