Korean Air #17: ICN-LAX
Boeing 747-400
Prestige Class (Business)

Obviously we did not fly the A380 but I thought it was a cool picture/drawing/postcard.
Here are some pics from the International Terminal at ICN:

oddly, this came out looking like 1 picture; it is actually 2:

This sign was on a random wall by a gate. I looked all around, but could NOT figure out what I was not supposed to take a picture of:

just before pushback to JFK:

shortly after push back to DXB:

I am not sure if Incheon Airport is so huge that it seems empty, is huge and really is not very busy, or some combination of the two. This is what most of the gate areas looked like:

Incheon Airport includes many ultra high end shops.

Here is our ride to LAX. Boarding was organized, minus the security screening of carry on baggage just before entering the plane. The security personnel were off to the side, kind of waving and yelling (politely) for people to bring their bags over, while more people were trying to board, creating a bottleneck at the jet way entrance.

Surprisingly, no amenity kits were given to Prestige class passengers; only slippers were available.

Once we leveled off, dinner service began. The menus were not passed out, they were already in bins at our seats when we boarded. There was dinner and breakfast service on this flight.

I had the opportunity to try something new for dinner: "Bibimbap" - a bowl with rice, vegetables and minced beef. It was similar to a stir fry, but I believe the vegetables were steamed. Quite tasty indeed.
Appetizer: best smoked salmon I have ever had. The small dishes in the upper left hand side are condiments for my main dish.

Instructions on assembling the Bibimbap:

Bimimbap (the red stuff is hot pepper paste)

I was served the soup as well, but I had the FA take it away as it was bumpy and I almost wound up wearing it.
post dinner cheese plate:

For the exit row, a personal television came out of the armrest. Here is a sample of the movies, many had not yet been released on DVD. The breadth and depth of music selection was also impressive.

think there enough leg room in the exit row?

tasty breakfast:

The seats were comfortable but not flawless. I managed a few hours of sleep, but did wake up once with the lower portion of my legs on the floor. I had slid down the seat.

Service on this flight was smiles all around. Korean Air flight attendants make you feel like you are the only one on the plane. Fly Korean Air to experience "Excellence in Flight" from food to entertainment to service.
Thank you for reading my report, hope it was enjoyable.

Thanks for all the pix Planereality.
I just did a DFW ICN BKK on KE Prestige class.
Last year, the BKK ICN DFW...I was lucky to get the new Prestige class seat as in your pix.
This time, on this 772, I had the same horrible seats they have on their intra-asia flights with the 773s.
Limited recline, and the first generation 5" PTV.
Do you not have any objection to the funny way they serve meals ? They come to ask for my lunch order choice, and ask me to choose what I want to eat at arrival.
How the h*** do I know what I want to eat 11 hrs from then ?
And on the flight ICN DFW, they woke us up 4 hrs before landing to do the second service.
I asked one FA why : to be told that it's 6PM ICN time. So, time for the dinner !!!
Of course, the FAs are real neat and prissy, in their Tiffany Blue uniforms and bamboo shape hair ribbon or pin, and scarfs
The service was excellent and the FAs were always helpful and pleasing.
Oh, one last remark : first, it's a tray meal. They put a table cloth down and out comes the tray.
And after you finish your meal, they took that table cloth away, and brought out a half a tray size of white table cloth.
Change table cloth for dessert and cheese course ??? What is the logic behind that ?
And one last rant ( this is a rant ) : that business class lounge in ICN, the showers are a joke.
You ask for a shower, if it's free, the attendant will give you the keys and 2 towels : one bath mat and a bath towel. The room is so small, it does not even have a loo in there.
I find it hard to believe that you can sleep better in the Prestige seat of the 773s...and they still are on some of their int'l 772s.
Those seats have the metal flip out foot rest : something that I experience 20 years ago on Pan Am and other US airlines in FC.
My final conclusions: fares wise, KE is not competitive at all. Even with the new Prestige seats they still are like the seats that CX is gradually phasing out.
I can only add to all the nice pix Planereality has posted. I got it out from their inflight magazine. It's about their new FC called Cosmos Suites. Again, there are still a lot of Cosmos Seats out their in their fleet. ( if someone can show me how  Smile )

Thanks for taking the time to post this report.

However, not impressed by KE's J class offering - some of the American carriers look better than this!!

And no amenity kit for J class passengers on a long-haul flight is insulting and unforgivable IMO.

But thanks again - a good read and nice pics.

Thanks for sharing your trip on KE.
Nice detail pics of the menu and meals.
Since airlinemeals.com has not been updated for ages, this site is the next best.
Bibimbap sure look like a mess after the rice and veg are mixed, but it is really tasty.

Great point! Did not cross my mind at the time.

Hilarious!

And one last rant ( this is a rant ) : that business class lounge in ICN, the showers are a joke.

I actually used the showers across from the lounge at the spa; they were big and clean AND free to use, but a shower "kit" costs 6 USD. The kit includes a towel (somewhat helpful). I have pics of the lounge and shower rooms at planereality.com

I too, was quite surprised. Was this an oversight or random occurrence or SOP?

Thanks again to all for reading and comments!

No toileterie kit is no oversight. I had to ask for an eye mask.
SQ does not give out kits either in C...but at least, they walk around with wicker tray offering
masks,shaving kits etc.
On KE, YES they do stock the bathroom with tooth brushes and pastes, shaving kits and combs, etc.
Planereality : did you notice the funny way the AVOD work ? : on the Air Show channel, the screen will come on with whatever infos on the screen, and you have to move the "clicker" to get to other flight infos ?
And on their AVOD, did you notice that all the channels are lumped together by the language on the movies : Korean sound track like goes from channel 1 to 13, and then channel 14- whatever is in English.
Most other airlines have their AVOD with the first channel in whatever the language of the airline's country, like 1A for English, 1B for Chinese, 1C for French, etc...
Very confusing for first timers.
Again, thanks for taking the time to take the pix and post them. I am a little long on the tooth to take pix inflight. Once, I did that on a CO BF flight, and you should have seen the dirty look my seat mate gave me.

So does it mean that we don't get any complimentary amenity kit for KE's business class? They even gives little amenity kit with tooth brush and paste to their economy class passengers, but not for business class? Btw, I like their new first and business class seat on 77W...can't wait to see them in LAX.

Hi Planereality,

thanks for posting this report. Just got back from ICN to BNE last Friday flying KE's Prestige Class on their A333. Have been a great supporter of KE for the last couple of years (4 return trips in Business BNE-FRA) but will not consider them for future travel until they upgrade their business class on the A333 from/to BNE. These old laz-y-boy seats are a joke for a 10-hour flight from/to BNE. Are there plans to upgrade these A333 (on the way to ICN our air craft did not even have in-seat Video but only 3 main screens) ?

Have a question about security at ICN. As you mentioned, my hand luggage was screened right before I entered the air craft and they took 2 little bottles of coke (bought them with my last remaining Won) and said no fluids on board and I argued that I bought them after security. What's the deal here ? Never seen this before (probably as I usually do not buy drinks before I board a plane).

I am off to a quick board meeting in FRA in 2 weeks and will be flying SQ Business Class all the way. Only about A$ 600.00 more than KE but the new business class in the A333 between BNE/SIN looks great and the business class on the 773ER to/from FRA looks unbelievable.

Will try to compare both very objectively and hope to find time to post a TE of my SQ experience.

Cheers from Brisbane,

Peter

Planereality : I hope you don't mind we piggyed back our observations of KE on your post.
Thanks for taking the time to post the pix and comments.
We are not really turning this post into a KE bashing ball.
But, IMHO, from what I read here and saw in their inflight magazine, they actually have 4 different kind of Prestige Class seats out there : the one that you had on your flight and mine last Sept INC DFW...the one they showed in their inflight magazine ( totally different from my lousy seat DFW ICN ). So at least it's 3 right....oh no, Bps3458 got the same seat as me, but with no 5" PTV ( no AVOD ).
One word of caution for any of you folks thinking to fly KE in FC. They have 2 different new seats installed in their LR aircrafts now : the Kosmo Suite, the Kosmo seat, and the lousy
10 yr old FC lie flat seat, 2-2-2 on their 772 ( at least on mine ).
What are they thinking ? SQ,CX ( the ones that I have flown )...SQ goes to 1-2-1 on their longhaul 773W...Cathy has gone to the flat bed herrigbone configuration on their 77As.
Foods and service, SQ and CX are on par if not better then KE.
Sure, I would put up with the shortcomings if the airfares are cheaper, but they are not.
As with Bps3458, the SQ fare BNE FRA is only $A600 more.
I'd be damned if I fly KE and get the lazy boy seat as he coined it...and the lie flat seat that you have pictured in your post on his ICN FRA flight.
Regards,
AA2MM ( actually, I am AA4MM now, Continental Plat, DL Silver Medallion for life ( for being a million miler ).
