Above the iceberg´s from Svalbard to TOS on SAS

Hei, dear readers,

welcome to part no. five of my travel experiences around Norway.

Here are the links to the 11 legs done till now:

SAS And Faroe Atlantic Airways: FRA-CPH-SVG (by FLIEGER67 Jun 27 2009 in Trip Reports)

Norwegian´s Logo-Jet And SAS: SVG-OSL-TRD-BOO (by FLIEGER67 Jul 2 2009 in Trip Reports)

Wideroe Lofoten Scenic Flights: Five Legs To TOS (by FLIEGER67 Jul 8 2009 in Trip Reports)

My Arctic Experience: SAS To Svalbard/Longyearbyen (by FLIEGER67 Jul 12 2009 in Trip Reports)

Staying for some hours only on Svalbard with superb weather conditions between -5 und +3 degrees,
there is a lot more to do there, so I need to go back sometimes.

The real friendly girl at my hotels desk was somewhat surprised that my time at Svalbard was that limited,
it seems not that much travelers going the long way up the north and returning the next day!.

Snow around the hotel:

Once more:

The local bus runs very close to the departure time to the airport.
I want to walk around and see the surroundings, so this time by taxi, no problem and also not that expensive.
Funny, the taxi driver can´t believe that I am going as a pax that early, he stopped at the staff entrance,
ok for me to start the walk around!.

Short thereafter a very friendly female SK employee approached me and asked if I need to check-in my bag.
No kiosk system here, the classic check-in, she told me that the flight is only low loaded today and she will
secure me a window seat on the side of the plane with the best views during departure.
Really nice and recommendable customer service.
No time to wait at security and some seconds later in the gate area.

My machine was early announced and so it was, nice to follow the touchdown of that wingled fitted 737-800.
LN-RRE, named "Knut Viking", another one of the 13 machines in the SK fleet, delivered new at 24.04.2008.
Leg no. 41 for me on the 737-800 and also a new one for my log.
The plane parked on the apron directly in front off the terminal.
And also the two pilots are fascinated about the weather conditions, doing several pictures around the plane with the mobile´s.
Boarding started, self service to the plane.
Load was indeed very low, good comfort with dark blue leather seats, clean cabin and acceptable legroom on that machine.

Cabin:
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/N0902/N0902093.jpg

Well designed for the huge number of spanish natives in Scandinavia!:

2 female, 2 male FA´s in service.
The scandinavian pilot with a short welcome during boarding, later also once more inflight.
Departure from the 2323 meters runway 28, flight level 38000 feet and passing the only land on the way,
Jan Mayen Island and also the northernmost active vulcanoe above sea level, the Beerenberg.

Touchdown:
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/N0902/N0902124.jpg

Finger deboarding, no time to wait for my bag.
The well known "Flybussen" waited outside and minutes later I was on the way to the city again.
Accomodation was the Thon Polar hotel around the corner from the "Flybussen" stop.
Well, not that real recommendable, the rooms refurbished, but very small, a building place opposite the hotel,
where also the construction workers used the long daylight.

My room:

Tromso´s library:
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/N0902/N0902127.jpg

So, back on mainland norway.
SK was real good this time, friendly staff, a comfortable ride, fare was acceptable.

Looking into my schedule for tomorrow, you know, 12 legs done now, with a total of 21 around this trip,
so there should be something more the next day and btw., northbound again!.

Comments welcome,
Markus (FLIEGER67)

Hi Markus,

Your photos are just breathtaking! Though I prefer warm and sunny destination, I can truly appreciate the beauty of the white snowy landscape.

I am sure that you have become a Norwegian travel expert. If I want to visit Norway sometime, I will PM you.  wink

Wow - excellent picture! I really hoped to see this when I flew up and back, but there was way too much cloud which was a real shame.

Brilliant pictures, I'd love to go back when there is lots of snow, and it must be great for seeing the Northen Lights during early and late winter, when you can still get a bit of daylight too for sightseeing.

Looking forwards to the next part

LN-RRE is one of 3 737-800 originally destined for Air Europa, which SAS got from Boeing in 2008. The two other are LN-RRF end RRG. All three of them have Air Europa interior, instead of the standard SAS interior and hence also the Spanish writing. Personally I hate these 3 aircrafts as they are much more uncomfortable and and cramped than SAS' other 737-800s

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
Jan Mayen Island:

It's probably Bjørnøya, and definately not Jan Mayen. Jan Mayen is situated in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, much closer to both Iceland and Greenland and it would be a hell of a detour if your LYS-TOS flight went over Jan Mayen  Wink

Jan Mayen btw have Norway's only active vulcano

Wow, the scenery looks amazing. Thanks for sharing these pictures and your story. I would love to go there someday, but in the meantime I am happy to have experienced it through this trip report. The rest of your Norway trip reports have been great too.

Thank you for reading.

Hi Markus,

again a nice report with awesome pics. Are you getting tired of flying? Only a one flight this day? Big grin

Touchdown:

You can see the whole runway from the last row on touchdown? Were there heavy crosswinds? Or are you already leaving the runway?

Thanks for posting!

Well designed for the huge number of spanish natives in Scandinavia!:

Looking forward to the next enthraling installment.

Excellent series of reports!

LN-RRE is one of 3 737-800 originally destined for Air Europa, which SAS got from Boeing in 2008. The two other are LN-RRF end RRG.

I recently flew LN-RRG, and I was surprised to see the spanish writing. What surprised me more was that one of the flight attendants spoke Spanish the whole flight. Found out she was working mostly in the galley, and was on the flight as she could help a small Spanish family that only spoke Spanish. It also seemed that the spanish family had not flown much. During landing, the mother let her 3-4 year old daughter sit in the aisle!

Hi Markus,

Great report and lots of fascinating pictures - this flight must have been definitely a highlight of your trip.

The real friendly girl at my hotels desk was somewhat surprised that my time at Svalbard was that limited,
it seems not that much travelers going the long way up the north and returning the next day!

Well, it's probably only A.Netters who visit this far-away place more or less just for the flight...

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
No kiosk system here, the classic check-in, she told me that the flight is only low loaded today and she will
secure me a window seat on the side of the plane with the best views during departure.
Really nice and recommendable customer service.

Very nice and personal service. I was surprised to hear that SAS doesn't have their check-in machines at Svalbard. Well, probably they aren't needed there with not too many flights.

Regards
Christoph

No crosswinds, final parts of the landing roll.

Indeed, real good service and with only two flights a day, not really needed.
