Well this is my first TR, so excuse me if there are any mistakes. Also, sorry if there are any blurry pictures. Its one of the few TRs on EgyptAir and I have some great photos on Cairo International Airport's brand new terminal 3!! So Enjoy!

Flight No. : MS 760
Airline : EgyptAir
Route : Jeddah (JED) to Cairo (CAI)
Scheduled Departure: 22:50
Actual Departure : 23:50
Scheduled Arrival : 01:00
Actual Arrival : 01:30
Aircraft : Airbus A330-200
Load Factor : Y 100% C ??%
Temerature in JED : 41 Celsius
Temperature in CAI : 28 Celsius

I left my house at around 8pm, and arrived at JED's North Terminal (The terminal used by every airline except Saudia, Saudia has an exclusive terminal) .We arrived at about 8:30pm, and proceeded to the over-crowded check-in area with flights departing to Karachi, Jakarta, Hydarabad.

We always used to fly SV on this route, but since I made a BMI Diamond Club membership, and when MS joined Star Alliance. I stopped using SV, and vowed to use MS on all my future flights.

While booking on MS this time, I made sure I booked on aircraft other than the 777-200, because I had a terrible experience on the MS 777-200 last time, for those of you planning to fly MS avoid the 777-200. So I booked on the A330-200 and was very pleased with the aircraft.

Check in:

The BD and LX flights where going to LHR and Zurich respectively but via Riyadh.

After check-in we proceeded to Immigration, and then security. In security, as I was putting my valuables on the tray, someone had left a condom on the tray  laughing  Here it is:

My Travel 'kit', Ipod, Passport and boarding pass:

The departure lounge:

JED has undergone slight renovations, but still has a long way to go. The terminal itself is small and cramped, there are barely any food options, and the ones that are available are horrible. Its good to hear however that there are plans to completely revamp the Kingdom's airports. Its about time, the rich oil-kingdom could have done this a long time ago.

At around 22:15 the gate opened, and I decided to go early, to get pics of the aircraft before everyone boarded. We waited at the gate for a while, then a bus took us to the aircraft.

Screen at gate:

The Aircraft:

We were welcomed aboard by a male and female FA, who where smiling and directing pax to their seats. I proceeded to 35A, here is my seat:

[img]http://i635.photobucket.com/albums/uu79/CairoBoy94/IMG_0885.jpg?t=1248083390[/img

legroom:

The seats in the Economy class cabin were clean, very comfortable, and spacious, and had very good legroom with footrest. The cabin itself was clean and spacious too. There were no PTVs, but there were drop down LCD screens, which were of good quality. During this flight they showed episodes of TV shows, in the beginning there was an Egyptian comedy in arabic, then an englsih comedy, then a cartoon. According to the magazine however in June and July they would be showing "Slumdog Millionaire" "Yes Man" "Transporter 3" "Bride Wars" "Seven Pounds" and "Twilight" The FAs distibuted headphones before takeoff to the pax.

I also managed to pass the Business class cabin and found it to be very good. There was tremendous legroom, the seats were new, clean and looked comfortable. They also featured, PTVs, personal telephone, SMS and massage function.

Package in every seat pocket consisting of Horus Inflight Magazine, Safety Card and Air-sickness bag:

Inflight Magazine:

The Magazine was very nice, had some interesting articles, lots of info on EgyptAir, and a map of the New Terminal 3 so you don't get lost!

Safety Card:

Air Sickness bag:

The lack of PTVs in Y wasn't a problem on this 2 hour flight, but it would be on a longer one. HOWEVER, after speaking to an iniside source in EgyptAir, I was told that the new aircraft on order (the 777-300 ERs and the new A330s), will feature a great IFE system with PTVs (in all classes) and more than 400 Movies and songs, as well as Internet facilities, SMS and live news to your seat. The new aircraft will also feature OnAir technology allwoing pax to use their cell phones during flight. Also, I saw in a news article that the 777-300 will feature a new C class, with lie-flat beds. So Great News!!  yes  These aircraft are due to arrive throughout 2010, so lets wait and see!!

The current A330-200s along with the B737-800 remain the best aircraft in the EgyptAir fleet voth in Y and C class. I strongly recommend anyone to try and book on these aircraft when flying with EgyptAir

The bathrooms were clean, and had good ameinities:

The Cabin:

The captain then came on, welcoming us on board and apologised for the delay and told us other details about the flight. All communication from the cockpit was both in Arabic and English.

We pushed back just as an Air India 747 arrived at the gate next to us. I assume this was the flight that would be going on to Hyderabad after us.

AI 747:

Libyan Airlines to Tripoli:

Saudia A330

Saudia Turf:

We lined up on the runway, and gained speed, and we smoothly rotated just as Flo Rida's "Right Round" started on my ipod, and an illuminated Jeddah started to fade away from below us...

Shortly after take-off:

As the seat belt sign turned off, and we reached cruising altittude, the captain come on, and said that the seat belt signs have been turned off but, we suggest you keep them on when you can, he also said that in 10 mins, we would be served a hot meal with a wide choice of juices and soft drinks, and that the meal would be followed by Tea and coffee. He also said that the Inflight video playing on the drop-down screens can be heard on audio channels 1 and 2.

The Meal

After 10 mins, the FA's came around with the Meals and topping drinks. The options were Beef or Chicken, I took the Beef. As directerguy said before, it would be better if they provided a menu, to inform pax what exactly their meal consisted of.

There was a Bun, Salad, Main Course andd desrt with every meal. The Bun, came with a small packet of butter and a small packet of cheese. It was good. The salad, was just cucumbers, mushrooms and lettuce, with salad dressing available. I didnt eat it because I don't like salad. The main course consisted of Roast Beef and Zuchini, with Brown rice covered in some creamy sauce. The sauce and Zuchni tasted prefect, the beef was ok, maybe a bit good but could have been better. The desert was a chocolate cake with icing, which was very good. Overall I would say its a pretty average meal, and could be improved. Hopefully we will see this improvement when EgyptAir's recently signed contract with LSG SkyChefs comes into effect

The FAs came around collecting the food, and serving Tea and Coffee. The captain then came on saying how long was left, and for us to feel free to ask the FA if we need anything, and also saying the Remarks and Suggestions about our service is greatly appreciated.

I was pretty surprised at all the captains announcements, they never used to do this soon on MS, it seems like they jus went through a recent course or something.

There were i think 5 FAs serving Economy. 3 females and 2 males. They were all always smiling and helpful, with the exception of 1 female FA (she was in her 40s), who didnt smile at all, and was just doing her job.

Here is an example of a conversation between one of the younger looking attractive female FAs and a pax:

FA - "Hello madamme, what would you like to have today, Beef or Chicken"
Pax - "I'll have the beef please"
FA- " here you go mam,and waht will your cute little daughter have today"
Pax "Thankyou, She'll have the chicken please"
Then she talks while getting the tray
FA "Shelooks a lot like my neice" She hands over the tray to the little girl "Here you go sweetie"
Pax" Thankyou so mcuh"
FA "Is there anything else I can help you with"
Pax "No, thankyou very much"
FA "Your Welcome"

The rest of the flight was pretty uneventful and we were soon descending over Cairo. If you are flying to Cairo, i suggest you try and get seats on the left side of the plane, as the vies are incredible. You see, the pyramids, the nile and at night the city is fantastic!

The rest of the pics will feature photographs of CAI's new Terminal 3, which is the EgyptAir and Star Alliance hub.

On the ground in CAI, I saw 2 Saudi 777s and one Saudi 747, for a moment I felt as if I was still in JED! Then I saw a BA 747 and a TK 737-800, and I also saw countless EgyptAir Aircraft.

EgyptAir A330-200 at gate:

Lovely glass gates:

Inside the Terminal

Cars for the handicapped, many were available, and they are needed, because the terminal is HUGE and immigration is a very long walk away.

Before Immigration we were examined, by a team of doctors, and scanned by the heat-sensing cameras, before being allowed to go through. Ugh, Swine flu measures.

Immigration was over in minutes, there were countless counters available and we were soon on our way to baggage area.

Immigration:

Baggage collection area:

Pick up area outside Terminal:

EgyptAir Promo Stand inside Terminal:

Terminal 3 at CAI is a master-peice, it really can compete with other famous airports, the real thing is 1000 times better than the photos. It;s very modern, clean, spacious and a perfect terminal for transfers. The new premium lounges have opened on the 1st of July. All thats left is to rennovate the eyesore that is T2 and T1. There are already plans underway to completely revamp the horrible T2, and to renovate T1. I also saw a banner sayin that the three terminals will be connceted my monorail, I think by 2011. Also line 3 of the Cairo Underground will connect Cairo Airport to the whole underground.

Thankyou for reading my first ever TR, feedback and comments are appreciated.

An excellent TR! And thanks for posting the Terminal pics of JED, we barely see them and thanks for taking that AI B744 pic Big grin

After hearing horrid reviews of JED airport it is good to see they are improving.

My experience with the MS F/A's was the "just doing their job" attitude.

While I agree with you that T2 is an eyesore, T1 is actually pretty nice! I have pictures of it in my TR when I went to Kenya in April.

T1 isnt so bad, its actually a good terminal. But it was a bit crowded with all the EgyptAir flights, now it must be very empty! T2 is horrible, but they are going to completely upgrade it. They will even be transferring the T2 flights to T3 for some time will the rennovation takes place later this year.

Got chatting to a Customs Officer based in Cairo T1, during a LXR - CAI MSExpress flight last week & he was saying that they hardly have anything to do these days but that those based in T3 are a bit snowed under, just with the traffic associated with it being the Star Alliance hub (no photos were taken on this flight, as I thought, from his uniform, that he must have been some sort of security operative).

Thanks for the MS TR. Must agree with you that some of the FAs can have a do the job & go home attitude, but the majority of those I met on the domestic flights weere smiling & helpful.

Didn't get to see the international side of Cairo T3; used AF for these sectors, but the domestic arrivals & departures were quite beautiful & a vast improvement over the old T2.

T1 actually has the best AF Salon of the four I visited during over the course of the holiday; more like a large sitting room, with lots of comfy armchairs & a good selection of, non-alcoholic, drinks & snacks.

OK. This pretty much confirms that the FAs were on crack. Or maybe there was a VIP, or a supervisor, which would explain their 'niceness'.

Hehe...yeah. I once arrived at 7 pm or so and I think I counted 5 or 6 SV aircraft. CAI is a busy outstation for them.

First of all, congrats on going Premium!
Great TR-the pics are blurry but that can't be helped, and the ones at CAI were pretty clear.
Great that the flight was so...normal. I have to admit, the Saudi Arabia-Egypt runs especially during a crowded time means that the flight is always full and chaotic. It's great that they could do a full meal service AND stop for occassional chit-chat.
I wanted to post a TR about a recent DXB-CAI flight to show T3 on arrival, but that flight was so horrible I dread thinking about it. Thanks for removing a chip off my shoulder :P
Coupla queries though:
1) Any issues with taking photos at JED?
2) Were the female FAs wearing those awful yellow uniforms with tons of makeup? They need to GO.

Well, the MS 777-200 has very old and worn out interiors in all classes, its really bad. AGAIN, I strongly strongly recommend those of you flying on MS to chose the B737-800 or A330-200, in Y and especially C these aircraft are excellent. However when the new 777-300 and A330-300s come they will be amazing:

Quoting Egyptair269 (Thread starter):

I find something very peculiar about MS, on their flights to the Middle East they seem not to care about the pax just because most of them are laborers returning home. But on MS flights to Europe the FAs are always nice. Hopefully they applytheir angels withn on all their flights!

1) Nope there werent any, as long as you don't take photos in security or immigration, your fine. E.g. taking photos in the longe is fine.

2) I think their uniforms changed a bit, because they don't look as horrible as the ones on my last flight! They all looked pretty decent, and the young female FA looked very attractive. The Male FAs were extremely well presented and groomed. Oh and as yo mentioned in your TR, there was only one blond haired bimbo FA lol

I have noticed this of course, and not just on MS-everywhere in Egypt. It's called scraping and bowing to the foreigners, to impress the aganeb. It's disgusting, and humiliating. OK-the FAs should and need to be firm with labourer-type pax who use their cellphone when taking off/landing, ask for water/tea/coffee/sheesha when they don't need it, and stand when the plane's just landed.
But FAs should be polite to the rest of us, and get over their inhibitions. I do not know why Egyptians picked up this inferiority complex.

Hehe-there will always-and I mean, always-be a blond bimbo present aboard an MS flight. The new, dark blue dresses are extremely chic (not sheeek, thank God). The repulsive yellow ones remind me of maternity outfits from the 1980s.

I have a question about the glass air bridges in Cairo: Is the temperature in the air bridge remain comfortable during the summer days? I mean Aren't the glasses has an heating effect on the air bridge, like in a greenhouse, and in a hot city like Cairo it can be problematic?

I always toughed that glass air bridges can be build only in cloudy cities, like in Amsterdam, and not in hot cities because of the climate. I was surprised to see glass air bridges in Dalaman, Turkey, in the new terminal.

Thanks for sharing, enjoyed reading it & great to hear positive developments on EGYPTAIR and Cairo Airport.

You will flying Cairo-frankfurt-toronto with LH soon. Why dont you fly the first leg with MS so we can have another glimpse of Cairo T3, departures, service onboard MS European flights? I believe MS/LH codeshare each others flights between CAI/FRA and therefore i dont think there will be any differences in price if you fly the first leg on MS.

All rite bye now and enjoy Egypt. Keep EGYPAIR trip reports coming!!

Hello there El Al  Smile Thankyou for reading it. Regarding the glass air bridge, I am no expert on the topic, but when passing through it, it was fine, I think it was ventilated. Cairo is only hot in summer, but its pretty cool in winter and easter.

The reason why I chose LH is because of more convinient transit times in FRA. Oh and don't worry EgyptAir and all Star Alliance members operate from T3, so I will get to post photos of the departure, since LH is in Star Alliance. When I was originally booking I wanted CAI-LHR on MS and then LHR-YYZ on AC. But that would mean I would have to fly on the MS 777 on the first leg, and I wanted to avoid that. Besides I v=never flew on LH before and wanted to try them. Regarding your queery on MS service to Europe. I flew CAI-CDG on MS A340 and found the service to be excellent and the aircraft interior similar to the A330 in my TR, clean, spacious and comfy. However the C class on the A340 is very old fashioned.

Thank you for this TR, I enjoyed reading it very much.

Hello there El Al Thankyou for reading it. Regarding the glass air bridge, I am no expert on the topic, but when passing through it, it was fine, I think it was ventilated. Cairo is only hot in summer, but its pretty cool in winter and easter.

Apparently they use a special material for the glass, or use blue-tinted glass to help preserve the coolness.
And yeah, Cairo isn't that hot compared to Abu Dhabi, Dubai-all of which have 45-50C temperatures at times, and also have glass jetways.

Might I ask which airline will you be using?

Certainly, I will be flying international with LX and domestic with MS.

Hi,

Thanks for writing this trip report. As I will probably never experience Egypt and Saudi Arabia I have enjoyed reading this.

It looks like Egypt air offers a pretty good service on those flights.

Tim,

Oh a trip to CAI - one of my favourite cities! Thanks for the report and the interesting routing! I've never flown Egyptair, but hey, maybe one day! I keep reading about the new T3 but as I work for BA, I only ever pass through T1/T2 (can't remember which one) when I do the trips from LHR; to be honest, I really do like the "character" of the older, unrenovated terminals as they remind me of the "golden days" which have now sadly come to an end.

Having said that, everyone needs to look to the future and I can understand why you much prefer the new facilities - it's better for everyone, MS and its customers.

Thanks again for the details; look forward to our next MS experience here!
