Experiencing Phuket On SQ's New A330

After a conference trip to Launceston and Melbourne, my parents decided it was an idea to go to Phuket for a week to chill out and recharge the batteries, as the weather in Perth was pretty miserable. For me, it was an opportunity to try SQ’s brand new A330s and of course, I was super excited!!

As always, all your feedback is welcome and very much appreciated.

Since SQ was having a major sale, my parents just couldn’t turn down the opportunity to visit Asia again, and decided from some friends that Phuket was a good place to visit. The special SQ fares were a bargain, and we managed to snag ours for around $A750 including all taxes. Let’s not forget this fare included the sector on MI from SIN to HKT. A bargain indeed! The SQ website is very easy to use and everything was straight forward, so no problems there. However, I found that it was quite weird that all the seats apart from 1 or 2 were locked out when I tried to pick my seat the night previously. I feared that I might not get a window and I would not be too pleased about this!

My uncle dropped us off at the International terminal with plenty of time to spare and we headed straight for the check-in desks. The staff from Toll Group were handling the checking in for all the international flights this morning. Here is my conversation with the check-in lady.

Her: (typing away)
Me: Do you think you could allocate me a window seat please?
Her: Sorry, the flight is full and all the seating has been pre-assigned.
Me: Oh, alright then (dammit!)
Her: Unless you want to sit on the floor or something.
Me: (right.....)

Anyway she checked our bags in and handed back our passports and boarding passes. When I looked at my pass, I had been allocated 36K, and I knew immediately that I HAD gotten a window, what the hell? Don’t these ground staff know which letters correspond to which seats? Tut tut tut. Oh well, doesn’t matter, I was happy.















Whilst my mother was exchanging some money I headed up to the viewing area on the 3rd floor of the terminal to see what other birds were on the tarmac this morning. There was a GA B738, a D7 A333 just pushing back for KUL. It was interesting to note that the GA B738 was surrounded by an ambulance and a fire truck, not sure what happened, but there was no announcement of it over the PA system.

Going through immigration was a pain as there was a school group travelling on the same flight as us and there were about 50 or 60 kids going through with us – took a while. The Australian immigration officers were quite friendly and efficient through. Once we got airside, I checked out the duty-free shops and went to the windows to get some photos. Unfortunately Perth’s design isn’t exactly super friendly to aviation enthusiasts and the light at that time of the day was hardly conducive for taking quality photos.

The seating at the boarding gate was hardly adequate considering how full the flight was. In fact it was pretty much inside one of the duty-free shops and I was disappointed at how inadequate Perth Airport has become in the last few years. Just as began boarding, a QF A333 pulled in after operating its overnight flight from HKG as QF68. All the school kids were asked to board first, but it was a good 15 minutes after boarding was announced that it actually commenced. I was quite annoyed that I couldn’t get the registration of the plane at all, the windows and lighting in the terminal made it simply impossible.

We finally boarded at about 06.55 through gate 4 and were welcomed at door 1L by the leading stewardess Iris and another FA. Walking through the new SQ J cabin, I could almost smell the new plane odour! The seats and cabin look very nice, I particularly like the colour of the seating and the feel it exudes, very warm and welcoming.

Arriving at my seat 36K, I found the seat to be very comfortable. Legroom was good and the seat was just packed with features! The captain welcomed us and told us about the planned route and flight time.

One of the male FAs in my area noticed that I was taking photos and came up to me and welcomed me onboard. The conversation goes something like:

Me: Hi, just wondering what is the registration of this plane?
FA: I’m not too sure, let me go find out for you.
(Goes to find out...comes back in 1 minute)
FA: I’m sorry, this plane doesn’t have a registration, we bought it off Ebay.
Me: Hahaha really?
FA: Haha no just kidding, it’s STC.
Me: You mean 9V-STC?
FA: Yes, that’s it. Why do you ask anyway?
Me: Oh, I’m just an aviation enthusiast.
FA: Ok and when you are taking photos please don’t take any of the crew, any of the galleys and if you take any with other passengers in it, please ask for their permission first.
Me: Sure, no problems.

We pushed back from Gate 54 at 07:37 and it was quite rainy/dark all morning in Perth. We had quite a long taxi to runway 21, and while we were doing this I started to take some photos of outside. Then the pax next to me, some French guy and I had a bit of an argument.

Him: Didn’t you hear the FA? You CAN’T take photos! He told you nicely and now you’re still doing it! (aggressively)
Me: (thinking wtf...) Um didn’t you hear him, he said not to take any of the crew, galleys or other passengers without their permission. And I’m not doing that, what’s your problem?
Him: Whatever man, do whatever you want.
End of conversation.

I mean seriously, WTF!! This was the most incredible conversation I have ever had on a flight, and I have been flying for 13 years! Why is it that when you take photos on a flight nowadays that people think you’re either a freak, nutcase or a terrorist? And for the guy to tell me off after hearing what the FA had to say was simply incredible. Dude, mind your own business! I wanted to hit the guy, I mean does this guy seriously think I’m going to endanger the plane by taking photos on the taxi out? I don’t think we talked again after, apart from twice when I went to the toilets/explored the cabin.

Anyway back to the TR. We finally got to the holding point for runway 21 and took off very smoothly considering the wind and rain that morning, wheels were up at 07:50. Once we has climbed through the low level turbulence and got above the cloud line. Hot-towels were given out and once they were collected, headphones were given out. Soon we were over the Western Australia coast and cruising at FL400.

Menus were given out and the meal service began about 45 minutes after T/O. The choices were:

• Stir fried egg noodles with chicken and mixed vegetables
OR
• Poached eggs with Hollandaise sauce, veal sausage, grilled tomato and potatos.

I went with the latter, and I must say I was quite disappointed with the meal. Presentation was excellent, but the food was pretty tasteless and the serving size was mediocre as well. Thank god I had breakfast. Drinks (OJ/Apple juice, water, tea or coffee) were then offered. Not sure if it’s the catering out of Perth or not, but I’ve never had a decent meal on an international flight out of PER, apart from a few QF flights.

After the meal, most of the window shades were drawn and I dozed off a bit, as I was still recovering from the 5 hours sleep the night before due to the prologue of the Tour de France in Monaco, which I stayed up to watch. The trays were then collected and I went to the rear lavatory. On the way I noticed that the cabin was absolutely packed, the load in Y had to be close to 100%, I didn’t see one free seat.

After I got back I started exploring KrisWorld and it is absolutely fantastic!!! By far the best IFE system I have experienced so far. Heaps of music, heaps of movies from every genre you can think of. One thing is certain, on a long-haul flight, you wouldn’t get bored on an SQ flight! Initially I sampled some of it’s music selection and played a bit of Who Wants to be a Millionaire! Haha.

The seat itself is very comfortable, far more comfortable than QF’s A333. Seat pitch is good as well as width. Even though I am quite skinny, the seat seemed very wide for Y standards. The ergonomics and design of the tray table is another positive aspect of SQ’s A333s. It incorporates a lot of excellent features, such as a mirror and a foldable snack tray, encompassing space, design and efficiency. On the A333s, there is also a cup holder on the left of the PTV, as well as a small storage space behind it, for your glasses or phone or whatever. On the right of the PTV, there is an AV input connection, as well as one for an IPod and an USB. The PTV can be turned out and an unobstructive reading light is at the bottom. The remote control also feels nice in your hand and all the buttons are very responsive.

The PTV is crisp and very clear and with the IFE system, it’s a dream! Now if only all carriers had this....One minor complaint, was that the headphones didn’t fit on my head properly, but the sound quality was good, far better than some other carriers.

The FAs were seen regularly attending to calls (within a few seconds everytime) and offering people drinks/snacks.

After the meal, peanuts along with more drinks were given out. There was one more drink run just prior to our descent into SIN.

40 minutes before the scheduled landing time, we started descending and all the headphones were collected, rubbish was picked up and all the pax were asked to return to their seats. KrisWorld was still operational at this time, and I had the Flight Map on for the majority. The IFE system in my seat died after I was about 1hr into Minority Report, but it resolved itself soon after, although I didn’t have sound for the rest of the flight. I was going to ask the FA to reset my IFE system but the headphones were being collected anyway, so it didn’t matter.

We landed on runway 02R at 12:39 and docked at gate A9 at 12:45, 10 minutes ahead of schedule. We parked next to another SQ B77W (9V-SWG). On the way out I asked one of the FAs if I could take a picture of the cockpit, but she politely told me I couldn’t due to security reasons. Oh well, it was a nice flight anyway, and the lead stewardess wished me well as I exited through Door 1L.

This was actually my first flight with SQ and apart from the mess at PER and the average meal, everything else was excellent!

After a few hours exploring Changi, we went to gate E11 in T2 to board our flight to Phuket. Opposite this gate (E11) in T2 is an excellent place for spotting for runway 02C/20C. Boarding commenced about 20 minutes prior to the scheduled departure time, and the holding area was quite full with pax. When we got onboard, the plane seemed fresh but was getting old with some damage to seats and seatbacks, pretty much what you would expect to find on a regional carrier such as MI.

Note that row 9 has no recline as it is directly in front of an exit-row. For this short hop to HKT, it’s fine, but on longer flights it would start to get uncomfortable. Papers were offered prior to pushback, which occurred at 18.27. Overhead monitors played the in-flight safety demo, as there were no PTVs. We had a short taxi to 02C for T/O and at 18.36, the wheels were up. We made a 360 degree turn, to avoid traffic I think and then started to head north-west for HKT. We soon climbed to FL360 and were travelling at 890km/h.

The meal service began 25 minutes after T/O and the choices were:
• Curry fish
Or
• Chicken Pasta
Drinks were also offered.

The meal was decidedly average, I had the chicken which had a few pieces of chicken and broccoli that were completely tasteless. The fruit offered didn’t taste too great either. Oh well, I wasn’t too hungry, considering the excellent lunch I had at Changi. Trays were quickly collected and further drinks were offered to anyone that wanted it. Even though we were at FL360, it was quite cloudy outside.

One tip if you fly with MI – row 9 is not the row to be in. In addition to the lack of recline, there are overhead LCD monitors above 5E and also 8E, and it is very difficult to see from anywhere in row 9. They showed a show called “Just for Gags” which I had seen before – quite a laugh and some adventure white-water rafting programme that wasn’t too interesting for me. Another thing was that no headphones were given out for this 1.5 hour flight, and I couldn’t find any headphone slots, not sure if MI have decided not to install headphone slots on their A320s, anyone know?

The 4 FAs were quite friendly considering that Y was 98% full. The rest of the flight was quite uneventful. Straight after the meal service, there was a turbulence and the seat-belt sign was turned on. As soon as it was turned off, we had started our descent, but luckily I had time to nip off to the toilet. We landed on runway 27 at 19.02 and were quickly in the gate shortly after. We parked next to a JQ A332 operating JQ27 from SYD. Immigration at HKT was a mess, took at least an hour to get through. Not very efficient at all. All the bags had been taken off the conveyor belts and just laid out in the terminal on the ground, took quite a while to get our bags!! We then took a taxi for 500baht to our hotel: Thanthip Villa at Patong beach, a 45 minute drive away.

We took a taxi from our 2nd hotel – Centara Resort in Karon to the hotel. Don’t believe the people that tell you need to be there more than 2 hours before your flight, check-in is quite efficient and you go straight through. The terminal is quite worn and old, but I guess it does its job. Airside, there were a few TR A320s, an AK A320, a few MI A320s, a rather colourful PG A319, a SE A332 (F-GRSQ) bound for CDG via BRU. Just as we were boarding a TG B773 (HS-TKA) docked in the gate next to ours. We got 9V-SLH again!! Bit disappointed that I couldn’t get another registration down on my flight records.

The doors were closed at 10.12 and as pushback occurred 4 minutes later. On the taxi out, there was a strong westerly breeze blowing as we prepared for takeoff on runway 27. Prior to us taxiing onto the active, a TG B772 took off before we finally were given clearance to T/O. As we got up to cruising altitude, the captain John Lee introduced himself and the two F/Os in the cockpit. Leading stewardess Rosie then began the meal service. We flew back over the airport and then started to head south east for SIN. Outside it was another very cloudy day and the aircraft, as on the way down looked older than it actually was, even though it was very clean. In addition to this, MI’s interiors are quite bland and uninspiring.







3, 20 minute TV shows were shown on the overhead LCDs as per the inbound flight. Again, there was no sound and no headsets were given out. Again, as mentioned in the previous sector, row 9/10/11 have no recline but row 10/11 have extra legroom – 38inch pitch as they are exit rows. We cruised at FL370 at 850km/h and as we reaching our cruising altitude the meal service began. The choices were:
• Spicy curry mutton with rice
OR
• Roast chicken with baked potatoes

I took the ‘spicy’ curry mutton that wasn’t at all spicy. However it was an improvement on the inbound leg, the rice was nice. I grabbed a coke with the meal and then had a ginger beer as seconds. The load in Y was about 85% and the toilets at the back were quite clean and well stocked, as expected for this short hop to SIN.

Then at 11.30 (12.30 Singapore time) the captain came over the PA and announced that we had started our descent into Changi and that we were scheduled to land in 30 minutes. He also told us the weather in Singapore which was sunny and 31 degrees. The descent was smooth with lots of clouds on finals for 02L. After a very very long taxi past T3 we finally docked into the gate at 13.02 local time.

As mentioned previously, MI is nothing special, it’s food and aircraft is mediocre but it will get you to where you want to go without fuss, so hats off to them.

After spending the afternoon chilling at Changi and doing some spotting, it was time to go home! My parents decided to go on one of the 2-hour tours into the city (for free) whilst for me I simply couldn’t leave Changi!! No way!

I went through security at Gate A11 in T3 (where most of SQ’s medium/long-haul flights depart out of) at 18.10 and was pleased to see that tonight I’d be on 9V-STA, SQ’s first A330 delivered at the start of this year. There were two aerobridges used for boarding, J pax went through aerobridge A for door 1L, whilst the Y folk got door B for door 2L. The loads tonight were again really really full, close to 100% I’m guessing again. SQ always manages to fill their flights well and I’m sure with the recent SQ promotions, this would have only made the loads even better, despite the global economic downturn.

I settled down into my seat 53K. The rest of this flight followed a similar pattern to the outbound flight. Hot towels were dished out prior to pushback and the Captain EK Choy welcomed us all onboard and with F/O Daniel Cheng, he told us the flight time for tonight was roughly 5 hours. The doors closed and we pushed back at 18.40, this was followed by a very long taxi to 02C. The T/O roll was very smooth and wheels were up at 18.52 as we climbed to a beautiful sunset. We made an immediate left turn and started heading south straight away towards Indonesia.

About 25 minutes later, the menus along with amenity kits were given out. There was slight turbulence at FL390 and the front office told everyone to buckle down and ride it out before the meal service commenced. The choices for dinner were:

• Char siew rice (Chinese barbecued pork with steamed rice and leafy greens)
OR
• Pan roasted chicken breast with mushroom sauce, sautéed vegetables and smashed olive potato.

I had the former, and boy it was fantastic!! By far the best meal I have had on a plane, the vegetables were really fresh and the pork was oozing flavour – terrific. SQ must take their catering for flights out of SIN really really seriously. I had a Singapore Sling to go and it was great too!

I settled down for the rest of the flight and checked out KrisWorld. It was interesting to note that nothing was censored, there were still lots of swearing, violence and other adult themes in the movies which kids could have access to, I guess SQ wants the parent(s) to supervise what their kids watch. It was also interesting that the PTV got very very warm after prolonged usage, I wonder if the cooling vents on the back of the monitor is enough to dissipate all the heat coming from it.
Drink runs were numerous after dessert (magnum ice cream) and the service was top-notch. It was a bread and butter flight for SQ. I also grabbed a B77W plane in the duty-free sales for $S39.

Why is there a Finnair sign at PER? Anyone know?


The captain came over the PA about 350km from Perth when we were near Geraldton and told us the weather in Perth was fine but a chilly 6 degrees. We touched down on runway 21 at 23.27 and the landing/finals were quite rough. We crossed runway 06/24 and taxied back to the international terminal parking next to a CX A343 (B-HXL) bound for HKG as CX170. Finally we docked at gate 53 I think at 23.37. Immigration took ages, as my mum decided to buy some food products in Phuket. We got home at around 01.30 even though we only live 20minutes away.

In conclusion, it was an absolutely brilliant flight with SQ. The food, aircraft and service was brilliant and I can’t wait to fly with SQ again. Added on top of that the special fares they had, it was a great holiday. Is SQ a great way to fly? You betcha.

Pure ignorant. You did well to ignore him and carry on . Some people just have an attitude. It was none of his business and you followed the crew request for that particular flight.

Sam, just managed to clean up that grainy photo..registration is N804MS, and it's a B763 belonging to Interface Operations LLC. And yes the new Y product on SQ is fantastic  Smile

Great trip report. Interesting to hear that the catering out of PER was less than brilliant. Just noticed the same thing flying BNE-SIN-FRA return in business class last week. The catering out of BNE was very average (trying to be polite), catering out of FRA was much better and the catering out of SIN was brilliant. Actually had one of the best steaks ever on the flight from SIN to BNE. Can tell you that the new regional business class seat on their A333 fleet is very good and comfortable but nothing compared to the business class product offered on their 773ER in service between SIN and FRA.

First off, let me say that you are going to be a trip report expert. Your report is fantastic and has every detail that a report should have. Congrats on an excellent job.

I personally file SQ in the "A-" category ... sort of not my top 10, but top 20 ... but this report definitely shows them in very good light. Perhaps another airline which is better to fly in Y than J?

Great TR. Good coverage on SQ's Y product on the 333. The current MI interior looks tired, most of MI's fleet have the old interiors similar to the aircraft you flew on. Only the latest 2 A320 deliveries have the new seats which are ergonomically contoured and a face lifted interior panelling.

Yeah must be a catering this in Aus. Of course can't compare regional J with the J you find on the 77Ws  Wink

Actually, the new regional J is more enjoyable for lounging compared the the longhaul J. Even the dull and drabby Spacebeds are better for lounging but for a good sleep the longhaul J wins hands down.

Hi Suryo, yeah the guy was a bit of a loser. Luckily on my MI flight to HKT, i sat next to a gentleman from Adelaide who I had a really nice chat to. He seemed interested that I was writing a TR and we talked about where our travels had taken us. So it's not all bad.
