The Singapore Airlines Cliché

A cliché, is a saying, expression, idea, or element of an artistic work which has been overused to the point of losing its original meaning or effect, rendering it a stereotype, especially when at some earlier time it was considered meaningful or novel. The term is frequently used in modern culture for an action or idea which is expected or predictable, based on a prior event. It is likely to be used pejoratively. A cliché may sometimes be used in a work of fiction for comedic effect.

Imagine a fairytale, or perhaps your typical Hollywood movie, where each scene is perfectly designed, and produced in an attempt to get a specific point across the audience. One where each scene describes the utmost perfect setting that harbors the very feelings, emotions, sadness, or happiness that this author is trying to portray. Each person is fitted with a specific personality, each name is selected to describe the character, and every look is designed to match the mood. Nothing comes unplanned for.

This is what Singapore Airlines is about. No matter what you try to look out for, or how hard you do it, you will not find a flaw. The desired ending of this movie is to keep the customer raving till the day of death. As such, this airline’s management, the author of this story, has perfectly created a setting of unmatched service elements that entail the perfect looking females, the best hardware, and in-flight service that is simply spotless. Predictably, almost every movie has a happy ending, and the same goes for this airline.

What can possibly go wrong at Singapore Airlines? Perhaps the logo on your champagne tumbler may not be facing you, but that is the absolute worst it can get to! Even that, supposedly happens on the rarest of occasions!

These are the facts, and also the views of the public ….
The following is my view of Singapore Airlines …


Welcome To My 16th Trip Report,


This TR will cover my flight on Singapore Airlines from Singapore to Abu Dhabi, in Business Class.


This is my third and last portion of my trip to Sydney and Singapore. It was unfortunately time to head back home to Abu Dhabi, and after having a great time in both Sydney and Singapore, I was dreading the thoughts of work piling up on my desk the following week. However, I still had the return flight back home to look forward to.

Flight selection in this case did not involve anything more than your basic research because I simply must try Singapore Airlines. Etihad was my other option, but the timings did not match. So a ticket on SQ in Economy Class was booked.



Friday April 24th 2009


I was dropped off at Changi Terminal 2 by Ryanair!!! At 8:40am. It was perfect timing as he had to be at work, and I wanted the entire day to spend at Changi roaming aimlessly to the eye of the general public. Having lots of time to kill, there was no rush to check-in, so I walked around and explored.

By 9:10am, I proceeded inside the terminal for check-in. Although not Changi’s newest terminal, T2 was very modern looking, spacey, and so spotless! Why can’t older terminals look this good anywhere else?

I arrived at the check-in counters and had only one person ahead of me in queue to check-in.

Seeing me stand in line behind only one person, a ground staff immediately approached me.

“Good morning sir, I can take you to the next counter over there to check-in so you won’t stand in line. Please follow me to the Internet check-in counter”

How brilliant is that? You will not experience something like this in any other airport in the world!

I approached the friendly check-in agent, who in practically a blink of an eye checked me in. During that split second, I requested a window seat, only to discover that the flight was overbooked, and that all window seats had been taken. In fact, the only seats available were middle seats.

I was still in my holiday mood, and that means spending a little extra $$ on flying experiences can sometimes happen. So I asked to pay for an upgrade if possible. She immediately checked on her system and informed me that it was possible, however it must be done at the ticketing office located close-by in the terminal. Fortunately though, I did receive my Economy Class boarding pass for now, and my suitcase was tagged to AUH and taken care of, and all I had to do was show the agent at the ticketing office my luggage tag.

At the ticketing office, I was immediately attended to, and within 15 minutes, my ticket was reissued, I paid the difference in fare, got my luggage tag number linked to my new ticket, and the agent had gone to and returned from an adjacent counter to check me in and issue my boarding pass.

I was done by 9:55am, and decided to take the SkyTrain to Terminal 3, and experience I was dreaming of before this.

The moment you step off the train, you begin to gradually see traces of Terminal 3’s fascinating design. The dramatic art-deco industrial style is so pleasing to the eye, and at the same time it is so effective that it creates a natural lighting effect that makes you feel like you are right under the sun in clear blue skies. Of course, this dramatic décor is perfectly balanced out by the subtle brown earth tones mixed with black that spot the entire space. I can’t say more, but let the pictures speak for themselves.

By 10:20am, I headed back to Terminal 2. Arriving at 10:35am, I proceeded straight to immigration, and by 10:40am I was airside. Having visited Terminal 3 now, I do notice a huge difference. However Terminal 2 still does have so much to offer.

I opted to head to the Silver Kris Lounge first for a quick meal. By 10:45am I arrived at the lounge where an agent walked up to me at the entrance to check my boarding pass and welcome me inside.

“Good morning Mr. Hawi”
“Good morning”
“So you are traveling to Abu Dhabi today is it?”
“Yes I am”
“Please take note of the boarding time as there are no announcements in the lounge”

The lounge itself was showing its age and does not even come close to the Pier at HKG. Nevertheless it was still comfortable. The food was quite tasty, however the selection was poor, compared to Etihad’s and Emirates’ premium lounges.

After a quick tasty bite to eat, I headed back out to the terminal to walk around a little more.

By 11:55am, I headed towards the gate and once I arrived, I found a queue already piling up to go inside the holding area. The flight did in fact seem full, and it was mostly religious traffic making their ways to Jeddah, where this flight continues after its intermediate stop at Abu Dhabi.

The Saudi market is a top priority for most Asian carriers like SQ and CX, and possibly in the near future TG, who desperately want more access to this ever-so restricted pro-SV market.

I stood in queue for the security check before arriving at the holding area at 12:05am.

At 12:25pm a pre-boarding announcement was made calling for all passengers that require assistance to board the aircraft, in addition to Premium and elite status FFP’s. I got up from my seat, gathered my belongings and proceeded towards the gate, and through the aerobridge before arriving at Door 1L of the aircraft.

Two male cabin crew, one of them being the lead steward or the equivalent of a purser, were standing at the door welcoming passengers on board.


“Welcome on board Mr. Hawi, right this way”
“Thanks”
“My pleasure, enjoy your flight”


By 12:30pm I was on board.

The Seats




This B777 was most certainly showing its age and the large old-style movie screens were a clear indicator of this. However, the plane was spotless beyond imagination. The seat itself, while the old-fashioned cradle-type, was very comfortable with lots of space. I much prefer this cradle type to many lie flat seats.

As soon as I settled in to my seat, a perfect model-like Asian-type Barbie doll Singapore Girl that goes by the name of Neneng (I hope I got that right) walks towards my seat. Naturally, I submitted to her hypnotic powers and stopped right in my tracks as she approached me, systematically stopping and elegantly handing me a menu with a subtle smile, that while evidently did not seem like it was coming from the heart, yet it’s plastic feel still brought a few shivers down my spine.

Shortly afterwards, newspapers were distributed to all joining passengers in our cabin.

Noticing my excessive picture taking, a Singaporean male who was seated next to me started a conversation with me and asked if I was a photographer. He seemed intrigued when I informed him of my enthusiasm for aviation and the likes, which was a nice change for once.

He turned out to be traveling back ‘home’ to Abu Dhabi where he and his family live. I was quite surprised to discover a Singaporean actually living in Abu Dhabi and not even one of the mere 1000 that live in Dubai. Even more surprising, he seemed to love it too!

During our conversation, a male cabin crew arrived at our seats with a tray of welcome drinks.


“Sorry to interrupt, welcome on board sir, can I offer you something to drink?”
“Champagne please”

I was also offered seconds on the champagne before our captain came on the PA at 12:55pm to make an announcement to welcome us on board. He advised us of our routing to Abu Dhabi, and also informed us that the flight time today was 7 hours and 10 minutes. At the same time, the doors were promptly closed and we pushed back at exactly 1pm.

As we pushed back, and the aircraft began its loud warm up, a quick hot towel service was conducted. Neneng also approached my seat to take drink orders for after takeoff.


“Mr. Hawi, anything to drink after takeoff?”
“Tomato juice please”


After taxing to the runway, we took off at 1:15pm and began our journey to Abu Dhabi.

As we reached cruising altitude, the seatbelt sign was switched off and the crew got up to prepare for the service. Headsets and toiletry kits were distributed first, followed by drinks and peanuts. Service was quick, efficient, and spot on, yet impersonal and extremely robotic. You can almost predict the exact movement and approach the crew did for each and every passenger, like as if a standard operating procedure was in place for such a thing. Nevertheless it was fascinating in many ways.

Neneng then appeared again by my seat to take my lunch order.


“Mr. Hawi, what would you like to have for lunch?”
“I’ll have the Laksa please”


My drink glass was also collected, and I was offered seconds on the drink and the peanuts, in which I accepted for both.

Shortly afterwards, a trolley service was conducted to distribute the table linens, meal trays, and drinks. It has been quite some time since I experienced a trolley service in Business Class. Having flown Etihad quite a number of times and experiencing their unique Inspired Service, I feel that I am spoiled rotten now, that seeing your average trolley in Business class seemed so last century!

Neneng set my table with linen, and my meal tray containing a scallops salad starter was placed on my table.


“Mr. Hawi, would you like Singapore dressing with your salad?”
“Yes please”
“Mr. Hawi, some bread?”

Since I do not eat scallops I passed on that, however the rest of the salad and the bread were great. The bread was warm and the salad leaves were crisp and fresh. Neneng, who consistently wandered around the aisle collecting starter plates, immediately collected mine only moments after I was through.


“Mr. Hawi you didn’t like salad?”
“I don’t eat scallops but the rest was great”
“Ok”


As soon as she returned to the galley with my starter plate, she reappeared again with my laksa, which was absolutely mouth-watering!

My plate was promptly collected once I was done eating, and once all or most plates were collected, another trolley service was conducted for fruit, cheese, dessert, coffee, and tea. I skipped the dessert, cheese, coffee, and tea, and opted for just the fruit, which was poorly presented.

My meal tray was collected and my table cleared once I was done with the meal service. I was beginning to feel very sleepy by then as I hadn’t slept much the night prior. So I dozed off for practically the remainder of the flight and right before the second meal service.

At 3pm Abu Dhabi time, Neneng woke me up with a hot towel.


“Mr. Hawi, hot towel for you? We are about to start our refreshment service”
“Yes please”


When she returned to collect my towel, Neneng also took my order for the refreshment service.

“Mr. Hawi what would you like to have? I have fish or chicken”
“I’ll have the chicken please”


My table was set, and my meal tray brought to me very quickly.


“Mr. Hawi would you like anything to drink with your meal? Coffee, tea, or anything else?”
“Coffee please”

The chicken came with pasta in tomato sauce with black olives, which tasted great. Everyone loves pasta! In fact, I think it is rare to find someone who is not into Italian food maybe.

Once I was finished, and my table was cleared, I headed to the lavatory to pay some duties, freshen up, and check the confined scenery.

At around 3:50pm, the captain made an announcement that we had begun our initial descent towards Abu Dhabi International Airport, and that our expected arrival time was at 4:15pm. This was followed by systematic announcements by the crew as well.

Coats and jackets were returned to passengers, Kris Shop was closed, and Kris World was switched off. I fell asleep for a little more, only to find that Neneng had collected my menu and my headset during that time. Unfortunately, I get really frustrated when I am unable to take the menu back home with me, and this is why I was unable to post any pictures of it here; my apologies for that.

After the crew made their final preparations before landing, the seatbelt sign was switched on at 4:05pm and we touched down shortly after at 4:15pm, bringing this flight to an end.

After a quick taxi, we docked at the gate and the aircraft powered down. The seatbelt sign was then switched off and everyone got up to prepare to disembark.

Once the doors were opened, everyone was let out, and I gathered my belongings and walked through the aisle, turned left at the galley, thanked the crew for their wonderful efforts, and proceeded into the terminal.

Immigration and customs were a breeze, and within a quick 20 minutes from touchdown, I was in my car heading to Dubai. I just wasn’t ready to end my holiday and decided to spend the last night in Dubai with some friends.


Conclusion
Everyone seems to endlessly rave about how perfect the Singapore Airlines experience is, and in reality they are in every way. You have to try really hard to find any justified flaw in their overall service, airport-to-airport; and admittedly, I did not find anything wrong.

However, it seems to me that for the sake of perfection, you may have to forego a certain aspect of personality, revealing nothing but a programmed viewing that you can almost rewind, forward, play, or even stop. For this very reason, I found no ‘wow’ factor within SQ, when in fact, I actually thought they were just average. Their cabin crew, while having some of the best looking females I have ever seen, and with capabilities to be super-ultra-efficient and at your service at any time, they come no where near as the less perfect, yet ever so charming senior crew at Cathay Pacific, or the down-to-earth warmth of their counterparts at Malaysia Airlines.

I may get bashed for this, or I may not, but I am only being honest and expressing my opinion. Singapore Airlines is still an excellent airline, however, I think that it’s excellence can be a bit overused in many ways, and there are so many other airlines out there that deserve much more credit and attention. However, this will not stop me from hoping that one day I will get to fly their all business class A345 service to EWR.

Can you take the skytrain @ SIN landside?! .. I always assumed tht was an airside thingie.

My first ever international flight was on SQ to MNL via SIN, and your shots of T2 shopping arcade, just brought back a lot of old memories!!

The food looked yum, esp. the Laksa.. and I guess i am one of the few, who would rather not have pasta on a flight!! :P luv pasta, but just no the type served onboard!!

BTW do have any clue how many passengers disembarked at AUH? Or that how many continued to JED?

Because SQ, like EK, is the queen of gimmicks -- it offers the mind-blowing product on a few birds and goes subpar on the rest.

I have to admit, I haven't even read this trip report yet, and I already know that I am in for a treat.  Whenever I see a TR by Ronerone, I make sure that I have something to snack on beforehand, because I know it will be a good read.  Such is the case with this TR.  Here I go!!

Next time when we meet for dinner, I will order nothing but scallops to share and accidentally / purposely forget that you do not like them, and have it all for myself.

Perhaps I can offer an explanation to why Neneng is such.

SQ's JCL cabin is sometimes transformed into a training ground for FSS (like Neneng) to progress beyond YCL. In my experience, I have come across these trainees and more often than not they turn out robotic, nervous, and I even encountered a FSS who worked to the point she was perspiring in the cool confines of a cabin.

Another dead giveaway would be their non-deviance from company-issued-directive make up colour which are matched according to the FSS's skin tone. From the look of Neneng's clownish make up, I would dare assume she is a newbie.

These girls work hard to prove themselves so I normally try not to expect too much from them. They would have endured one verbal lashing after another in the galley before putting on a brave front to face the passengers. I try to be as unobstructive as I can and when an opportunity arises even commend on their service to the supervisors. I used to fly SQ often enough to pick out the characteristics of these newbies so I do my part to make life easier for them.

So if you were put through a boot camp, there would come a point when you just revert to cruise control and just make sure you meet the bare minimum required by the service SOP. And by all counts, even the SOP is as thick as a bible so it is no easy task. Sheesh, there is even a page where they instruct the girls how to pick up a freaking pen from the floor! Illustrated with pictures on how to position their body... Step one... Step two... Step three...

On the job training can be a bitch on SQ and the boot-camp galley ensure only the best of the best make it through. Which explains when you encounter a green-kebaya LSS (one up from Neneng's FSS), she would have been through hell and battle hardened to face the toughest challenge.

It is no secret Dubai was created on the Singapore model, likewise EK too on SQ. However, think about it... If an airline were to offer one standard "mind blowing" product across the board regardless of passenger and sector demographics, what would this result in?

If you are flying Singapore - Bali, full of merry holiday makers and cost conscious back packers (yes, some still do fly SQ), would you unleash an A380-styled product when no one wants to pay for it? Certain routes demand for different products, pure and simple. As an airline who isn't flexible enough to cater to these different market segments, the company will lose out in the end.

Flexibility is KEY in an airline. We have seen far too many inflexible old schooled outfits wither into their present states like Malaysia Airlines, Olympic, Alitalia, SAS, United, US Airways... I am sure you are smart enough to see where I am going with this.

Let me do some sums for you. Long haul worthy products are found on:

A380 - 9
A345 - 5
A330 - 11
B772ER - 15.
B77W - 19
B744 - 9

Total - 68 (NG PCL, NG JCL, NG YCL, Sky Suites and Spacebeds. 744's old styled YCL will be phased out by decade's end.)

Regional configured aircraft with supposedly "sub par" offerings include:

B772A - 31 (part of this fleet is shown on this trip report.)
B773 - 12

Total: 43

As the illustration above show, it is hardly just "a few birds" now, is it? The numbers for long haul aircraft actually tops the regional ones. It isn't gimmicks, it is business 101.

I must say, impressed myself too by Changi airport. It's indeed the mini-gardens, the colours and the spotless floors. You'll feel very fine and relaxed wandering through these terminals. This is a big extra for an airline like SQ, as a customer on this airport.

About the inflight service, hmm, I think I can admit mostly with your conclusion. Yes the service seems spotless, but, the product (seat) itself is outdated compared to others. The crew might be friendly to you etc, but the meal itself is just average indeed. The fruit is a no-go in business class, how can they present it like this?!
I've heard many stories from SQ, also people who work for the airline. It's a strong regime. Not everybody likes it.
Not sure if I would like the flight with them, maybe other airlines fit better to my taste.

The 773's (not sure what the difference is between 73A and 773 at SQ) that are deployed to DXB are due for refurbishment within a year (so in about 6 months from now)

After this, he did actually say that the 772's are also scheduled for a refurbishment program hence, AUH will eventually get the new product.

Are the 772's really getting a refubishment? Aren't they on their way out of SQ though?

Only a few of us got off at AUH, and i would say that 85% of the load continued to JED. Most of the passengers seated in J got off at AUH, while most of Y contined to JED.

But she did not sound Singaporean at all. She had an accent i was not able to recognize. But judging from her look, she was definitely South East Asian.

And a not-so-popular route as AUH-JED, where top-notch service isnt much of a necessity, is the perfect flight to put her on.

Insane!!! That is EXACTLY what happened! .. EXACTLY!

The LSS on my flight was another gorgeous Singaporean (with Indian origins). However she was mainly in the back cabin and rarely showed up at the front.

Interesting thing to note, is that you easily pick up on the pattern of the announcements, because even the timing from the each 'cue' as you say, is almost the same!

The original refurbishment plan called for 11 773s to be converted to 73As but this has now been revised to 7 773s for the first tranche. The first of the 73As is already on captive rotation on the SIN-SYD vv sector on SQ231/232.

The 772 refurbishment will only start after in initial batch of 773s but that isn't so soon. The 772s were delivered over 8 year period so it's likely the newer builds (particularly those with the Matsushita S3000 IFE) will be earmarked for refurbishment as they will be around till 2016~2017.

Yup. You can lounge hop between both SKLs in T2 & T3. The T2 SKL J uses china from the previous F line up whereas the T3 SKL J uses the current generation J china. The choice of food is much better in T3 as well, you get a decent hot buffet spread whereas choices are rather limited in T2.

You should do another SQ run in F to experience TPR in T3Big grin

It's pretty awful isn't it and I actually think the F section in T2 is even uglier than the J section. I have heard that SQ is looking to downsize its lounge facilities in T2, so I suspect they may do a long-overdue refurbishment when that happens. I believe the last time they upgraded the T2 lounge was circa 1999 so it's high time they did something! While the new lounges in T3 are certainly flash, and beautifully appointed, it's a pity they don't offer anywhere near the same standard of in-lounge amenities as competitors such as CX, BA, QF, EK, TG or EY.

Nicely put, and some of the stunners certainly have that effect. It's always nice boarding an SQ flight and seeing the elegant deportment you speak about: there's real precision to the way things are conducted in the cabin and I can't help but think all too often that it's Asia meets France.

It's unfortunate you had such a crew. I've had similar crews, but I would not go so far as to say they are the norm. Because SQ's service is so structured, and predictable, I think you notice the lack of warmth more than you would on other carriers. The unfortunate thing about the regional 777s is the JCL cabin is largely served by junior crew. On most 2-class flights, the IFS has a fairly hands-off role, and I have found SQ usually assigns the Chief and Leading stewardesses to the Economy cabin, leaving Business staffed mainly by the newer recruits. On SQ, I find it's the senior crew who really excel.

Agree completely. This is something SQ needs to improve, especially on the short to medium sectors. I remember the first time I flew in Business on SQ a few years ago: the cheese came wrapped in plastic and looked decidedly low-grade, especially after the Lobster Thermidor that came before it!

I'm not sure I completely agree with this. While I do think SQ cabin crew are very well programmed thanks to excellent training, I've found them to be almost unsurpassed at anticipating the expectations of passengers, and where they can, customising their service to suit individual passengers. I think my views on CX service are well enough documented in this forum without me needing to elaborate further, so I'll refrain on commenting on that, other than to say I think their excellent senior crew are solely let down by their extremely poor junior staff.

Nevertheless, I look forward to reading another report from you. Keep up the good work!

That sounds about right then! Hence DXB will get the new product well ahead before AUH.

It sounds like a very solid plan actually, as the time they introduce the new product to AUH (if the plan remains as is), the AUH market would have been well developed, as the city continues to grow.

Somehow, I've never been 'wow-ed' on the many J class flights that I had with them...yes, even when I was an SQ employee. As Ryanair!!! mentioned above, the crew serving in J are neither here or there... not senior enough to be in F, but senior enough to be taken out of Y. The transition from Y to J is a huge one, with completely different service procedures and such. J class crew always seem overwhelmed.

As for J being used as a training ground for new J crew, it happens on all routes, not just non-flag ship routes. The same goes for supernumery crew (trainee FAs). They can be rostered on any flight.

We all acknowledge that SQ's J product is their weakest link. They're well ahead of everyone else in Y, and their F product is great and consistently staffed by one of the best senior crew in the industry. Their J product (I'm referring the hard and soft ware) just seems so much behind other top carriers.

As Airpearl mentioned in one of his earlier reports, there's a price the airline has to pay when the airline strives hard to deliver consistent service. But it is precisely this consistency that SQ fans love and appreciate, and I do too. Frequent flyers with the airline know exactly what to expect on every SQ flight (that explains why a particular Singapore "ger" wanabe can recite every announcement - word for word- in the crew handbook)...   Service is so structured that it is never up to the crew on that particular to decide if he/she wants to do a water run, or whether he/she feels up to it clean the lavatories...

Neneng (if that's really her name)...sounds like an Indonesian name. It's interesting that you mention that you can spot a Malaysian accent from miles away cause having worked with Malaysians for years, I can never tell their accent apart from the Singaporean one. Of course, I'm only talking about Malaysians of Chinese origins. I've never dealt with a Bumi before. However, if a Malaysian Chinese speaks Mandarin...haha...now that's a dead giveaway and can be spotted a continent away.
