@ Zurich Kloten
After disembarking we proceeded straight to area B. I personally, have always found, and still find, the piers at Zurich to be very narrow. It’s like as if they did not have any space to make a decent pier at Zurich. When boarding of two flights commences at the same time at opposite gates, it becomes one big mess. But anyway, we made our way to immigrations and passed to area B. Normally this would not be necessary because Switzerland was not a Schengen-country. But since March or May of this year they are and therefore on trips to Istanbul that originate in Amsterdam, you will have to pass immigrations. After passing immigrations we walked towards the lounge.

Lounge
After showing our boarding cards, and the staff scanning them, we entered the lounge. The set up of this lounge is quite different from the Swiss lounge at area A. This lounge is smaller than the lounge at area A, but I kind of liked it more than the lounge in area A. I really don’t know why but it was quiet (maybe due to the number of departures) and it seemed like there was more space for each passenger. Also this lounge features several areas that are set up different and with different furniture, while the A-area lounge is more ‘all of the same’. This lounge also has a better view of the platform and the runway.

Mövenpick icecream in the lounge… delicious!

I also noticed that Swiss now serves Mövenpick icecream in the Swiss lounges. I never noticed that before. It seems like Swiss is trying to further improve their offerings in their lounges. Last year I notices that they served some basic hot dishes. These were nothing special but before I had bever seen that in their lounges. Nowadays, they have small sandwiches and a pasta dish available in their lounges. Improvements are always welcome. After spending some time in the lounge and having a mini-breakfast we left the lounge in order to go to the gate.

Boarding
We noticed that it was 10 minutes before departure time and that we had to hurry up. Once we arrived at our gate, it turned out that we were going to be bussed to our aircraft. When the gate-agent saw us walking towards the gate she shouted: ‘Istanbul passengers?’ (‘Yes’, we said.) ‘Then hurry up please!’. After getting on the bus I noticed that this bus was very small. I looked around and apparently the driver saw me looking and said: ‘A VIP bus, specially for you’. We laughed and he told this was a crew bus. Well, I have seen crew busses in far more better conditions than this one. It really looked and smelled awful. After a short ride to our aircraft we were ready for boarding our aircraft. We left the bus and climbed up the stairs.

The flight
We were greeted by the male maitre de cabine and a female attendant. Both friendly. We saw everybody had already taken their seats and only our seats were empty in business class. We quickly sat down and fastened our seatbelts. Just a minute after we boarded they closed the door and started the usual anouncements. The maitre de cabine introduced himself in German, Fench and English and afterwards safety videos were displayed. Meanwhile the female attendant was distributing our bottles of water and refreshing towels. She also offered some magazines and newspapers.
We taxied to a runway which was located nearby our parking position and took off very quickly. After take off the fasten seatbelts sign was turned off and the crew closed the curtain between economy and business class and off course the galley curtain. I saw them setting up their drink-trolley and preparing the dishes in the oven. After reading some magazines it was time to eat! First we were offered some cookies/snacks/pretzels/whatever and drinks.

Our pre-dinner drinks

After that they came by with our DINNER. Yes, our dinner. Dinner at 10 AM.

Our dinner

Salad

A long time after being handed out our tray with the meal they passed by with the hot rolls. Nothing to do about it. Today was a special occasion because Swiss/Switzerland was celebrating the 1st of August. The card that was included did not explain what the 1st of August was and why it was celebrated.

Card

I did notice that distributing the meals was chaotic on this flight. First, they came by with two carts for the pre-dinner drinks. One attendant started in the back of business class and the other one in the front. So far, so good. After they finished providing everyone with pre-dinner drinks the maitre de cabine went to the back and the female attendant served business class. Se pulled out a trolley and served the meals. Firstly, she forgot to serve a passengers meal. Then, she forgot to come by with the bread basket after she had served dinner to passengers. Finally, after she finished row 6, she apparently realized that she had not passed with the bread basket. She stopped serving meals to others and picked up the bread basket to serve us. After that she went back to serve meals. Then she got the bread basket and served those people. Finally, she left the trolley with meals standing in the middle of the business class and went back into the galley to get the drinks cart out again and serve us our drinks which needed a refill a long time ago. Well, you all can tell what happened. She was not able to serve drinks further than row 5 because the other trolley was still there. She pushed the overhead button to alert a fellow attendant. The maitre de cabine showed up but he also had his trolley with him. He said that she should put the trolley with drinks away and then pull away the trolley with meals too. I did not know why but they were both stressed out.

After they managed to get the aisle free they both started serving drinks again. When the maitre de cabine was serving drinks, the lady next to me said to him in German that she thought that he was doing a good job. He quickly thanked her and proceeded with serving her drinks. He was doing everything so fast and talking so fast, that one would ask himself: ‘what is wrong with this guy’? And soon the answer came: he told the lady that they were very busy with the passengers in the back as they were 100% full in both cabins and that they had to do everything quickly to serve everybody on time. I still find it hard to believe that the fact that they are 100% full would cause problems. But, apparently it does. After we finished our meals and drinks. They offered us coffee of tea and cleaed away our trays. We read some magazines and enjoyed three cups of coffee.

Soon it was time to land. They allowed us to finish our coffee and cleared away everything just 10 minutes to landing. Approach and landing were smooth and we reached our gate quickly. After we parked at our gate we got our bags and got off the plane with a nice farewell from the crew and captain.

Arrival @ Istanbul Atatürk
Once out of the aircraft and in the terminal we walked towards immigrations. Got our passports checked and then walked further towards the luggage belts. Once we were at the luggage belts we noticed that each belt only displays the flights of which the luggage will be arriving on that specific belt. That is nothing new but there is no general screen that shows which flights’ luggage will be arriving at which belt. Either there is one and I missed it or Atatürk needs to put one up there.

The next 20 minutes we waited for our luggage. As usual, the priority tags do not work. Especially if you are travelling Swiss do not expect your luggage to arrive any sooner than other passengers. This is really a shame. I have never seen that my luggage (or any other priority luggage) arrives any earlier than the few last pieces that come off the aircraft at Swiss their out-stations.

Arrivals luggage area @ Atatürk

Finally, I collected my luggage and we went through customs (two men sitting on chairs and watching the people pass). Once out, we turned left to make our way to the CIP lounge of Turkish Airlines to wait for our domestic flight to Adana.

Verdict
Well, this flight was just not up to the previous flight (AMS-ZRH). All factors, like the staff being so chaotic and stressed out, and also the fact that we recieved a hot meal (dinner) at breakfast time made this flight a ‘standard’ one. Nothing special. They did what they needed to do and it was comfortable. That’s all.

Something I would really like to see is that Swiss would not serve meals from a trolley in business class. Also they really should serve the courses seperately: salad first, then the main, and then serve the dessert and the chesse plate. I have encountered some crews on Swiss flights intra-Europe that do serve meals this way and I really enjoyed that.

If I would have to mark this flight I would mark it with an average 6 out of 10.

Groet, Emre.

Thanks for sharing - Being used to the "usual" Hagen Dazs offer on most J flights, I'm quite surprised about the Mövenpick ice-cream offer.

Great TR, really surprised about dinner at 10AM and not just a lunch.

1 August is the "Swiss National Day" which celebrates the creation of Switzerland with the Federal Charter of 1291.

A few years ago they cut the number of crews in Y at least on long haul.

The main reason LX serves everything at once in C intra europe is the space in the galley which is limited. If they would serve every course seperately they would need more trolleys / space to store the extra courses. Like this everything is on one tray and it uses up less space. It is definetly not ideal however if flights are full it's almost imposbile to serve courses seperately. Therefore depending on the crew if C Class is not packed some will serve the courses seperately

Good report again. Thanks.

I will do the same flights in 2 months, also in C to IST. Will report on those of course. Stay tunesd for that...

But with a full load, this will make the workload even more to them, and service imagination would reduce, or mistakes will be made (they might forget items).

Movenpick could represent their own country! And they are of high quality!

Great report and thank for sharing!

Aha, so I did miss the screen. I already thought there was one, because I could remember that I once looked up the number of the luggage belt on which my luggage would arrive somewhere at Atatürk. I will look out for it next time now that I know.

It makes sense that space and efficiency determine how meals are served. But since I really enjoyed the few times that it happened, I wish they would do it more often. Btw, the times that it was done (serving the courses seperately) C was also full. I do understand it is not possible to do it on most of the flights, but I personaly prefer it and I think it is an added value to the C-class product itself.

Haha, forgetting to serve items... like drinks you mean? Serving drinks with my meal was even forgotten on my recent Lufthansa flight to ARN, while C was not even half full and the meal they served was a one-tray item. I will tell you about it in my report of those flights. But indeed, a high work load might even lead to more mistakes.

I am looking forward to your trip report!

Haha, yess I know that, but what I wanted to say was that there was no further explanation of what exactly was being celebrated with the National Day in Switzerland  Smile

I agree with you....It depends on the crew but unfortunately somethimes crews are not as flexible and stick to the Crew Habdbook 100% as there it is mentioned to serve all courses together. However if space and time make i possible the cold and hot meal on longer european flighs eg IST, ATH, LED, AGP, (TLV, CAI when operated on an A32S aircraft) courses should be served seperately. Supposeldy Moscow flights somethimes have up to half of the Cabin as C, which would make it impossible to serve the courses seperately due to space limitations which is understable then.

Nice report & pix, thanks for posting.

Service sounded patchy, not the norm on LX from my experience or from recent TR's.

Food looks good, won't go hungry!
