Good Day everyone-
This is my first post, so please bear with me as I am a total novice at trip reports. I would like to thank EwrKid for help on this!
The Flight Information:
Airline: Air Canada
Cabin and Seat: J class- 11 K
Flight No.: AC 858
Scheduled Departure Time: 23:25
Actual Departure Time: 23:25
Scheduled Arrival Time: 11:15
Actual Arrival Time: 11:00
Aircraft: Airbus A330-300
Date: Aug 28th, 2009
All in all, I was thoroughly pleased by the AC First Product. Although not amongst the Giants of the Far and Middle East, yet, it exudes a class much of its own amongst NA carriers.
The Check-IN- Experience:
Very quick process, I arrived late at YYZ terminal 1 (the trend for me) After exchanging some nice pleasantries with the check-in staff, I was asked to pick up some speed for security as boarding was to commence momentarily, hence I needed to turn on the Hyper mode and pass through the long line up. There were a few heavies departing at this time, AI to LHR, AC to TLV, GRU, SCL and Turkish Airlines to IST. Thus, the security line up was long, there were more people dropping off family than those actually going through security though its just an Indian thing 20 to 1, 40 to 2...lol I speak from personal experience.
The Lounge-ing Experience-
Cant tell ya how it was, I was running late, I know my bad, instead I can tell you about the gate, haha. Arrived at the gate as they announced the boarding for Aeroplan Elite, Super Elite and Star Gold members. So no wait time for me
The Big Bird-
I didnt even know it was going to be the 330 till I saw it through the gate windows. I was alarmed to see that there was only 1 bridge attached and thus I boarded through the second door. I was welcomed aboard by a very friendly Male F/A who pointed me to my seat 11 K (no personal escort to seat on AC).....alas, some space to breathe...literally. with only 10 people in First including me this was going to be a good flight. Plus, I was in the second cabin of J class so it was like flying a private jet on my own with 3 people looking after me.
A flight attendant came over and offered me some Juice or Champagne, I chose water and then was given some newspapers for the flight along with the Amenity Kit. The door was closed and off we flew on runway 24 L after a short taxi.
The Seat and Cabin-
Now in terms of the seat, pretty decent seat, cant complain, pretty much the same as Air New Zealand sans the leather or Virgin sans the maseuse! LOL. Being 6 foot 1 I wasnt by any means uncomfortable but I could have used some more width on the seat . The cabin was spotless, the lavs could use more upgraded amenties.

The service and Food-
I was truly impressed by the witty, funny, and obviously very Junior AC flight attendants, usually they are pretty senior, but I lucked out I guess. I had 2 gorgeous female f/a and one male all in their late 20%u2018s I suppose. They had me ROFL with the jokes they were cracking. When the service started all three First f/as went to super professional mode with the service conducted eloquently. I found out later during the flight that this flight is usually a JR flight for f/as as its a late departure out and first departure out of LHR hence a short lay over.
The crew always topped up my drink and there were frequent water runs on this flight. T
The food is mediocre, AC should think about upgrading their catering!!! To stay competitive this day and age you have to spoil your pax the word on the street was that the Y class pax received a muffin. yup a muffin with coffea/tea/juice for breakfast. You know the Golden days of flying are gone when you get a muffin on your tray table!

The Entertainment System-
Thales is a piece of work IMHO, my screen had to be reset twice during the flight as it froze, the map didn%u2019t work either. However, I cant complain about the movie and program choices%u2026not plenty but enough for this flight.
The 330 was graceful at touchdown, and I love seeing all the heavies at Heathrow.

The overall impression-
Check in process: 7/10 (-3 because I just thought the staff lacked true cust. service skills)
Boarding process: 9/10 (dedicated line up for J was good) and boarding was organized)
On Board Experience: 10/10 (f/a were great, and did best with the little tools AC provides)
Food Experience: 6/10 (for a $$$$ return flight in J, I have had better meals in Y class of EK etc)

hi guys thanks for the support. comeflywithme, i think airlines in north america need to follow suit with those of the east and middle earth lol. perhaps wages are too high and hence we get stuck with zilch in premium cabins. mind you Continental is pretty good.

I found your TR interesting as I just flew to MAD from YYZ in J (Aug. 26th) and had the exact same comment: THE FOOD!!! AC used to have great food in J. I'm glad to know it just wasn't me thinking our meal to MAD was poor. The breakfast looked identical to yours (no option which is just weak in J).
It's a nice J seat and overall product but given how poor the meal was (seems like yours was too) and the fact that we had 1 FA serving the full J cabin (24 seats) on YYZ-MAD added to the feel that AC has again, cutback its J product. She was not happy to be there either, which actually made the return in Y more enjoyable.
I agree with you about the lavatories also, they basically have hand lotion, which is the ONLY difference with Y. Disappointing to say the least.

Numerous American and even some European carriers aren't very generous either. But there are still lots of airlines which really care about catering.

Not surprising. AC should seriously invest some money to fix the IFE problems.
