Jetblue Inaugural to Baltimore

Just want to give a short report on another excellent Jetblue’s inaugural flight! This time the destination is Baltimore, Maryland. Perhaps in response to Southwest’s entry into Boston Logan, Jetblue decides to introduce four times daily flights between Boston Logan and Baltimore Thurgood Marshall International Airport on its Embraer 190 jets. Baltimore is the 57th Jetblue destination and its 31st destination from Boston. The entry was marked by a small ceremony at Boston Logan on the morning of September 9th. It was a beautiful day here at Boston, and Jetblue’s N258JB with the windowpane livery and named, “Blue Send Me,” had the honor to perform the inaugural flight to BWI.

Jetblue flight 1323 would depart from gate C36 this morning, and Jetblue’s staffs were talking with passengers and welcoming everyone, including passengers on the nearby West Palm Beach flight to take part with complimentary Dunkin Donut coffee and soon a cake-slicing ceremony. After a ribbon-cutting ceremony, boarding began at 10:28am and Jetblue staffs were passing gift bags from “Visit Baltimore” – Baltimore’s Visitor Bureau, which include water bottles, Frisbee, tour guides and brochures. Blue crab Styrofoam hats were also placed at each seat. The flight went out pretty full with many Jetblue staffs, as well as a few Any Time Pass Flyers. Door was closed early at 10:44am, and we pushed back on time at 10:50am. A not so busy late morning here at Boston, and we took off from R/W9 at 11:02am for our one hour flight down to Baltimore. We stayed at 32,000feet initially and then climbed to 34,000feet as there were some light chops down at the lower attitude.

Rachel and Ariela were our flight attendants this afternoon for both flights, and they were excellent and definitely provided the friendly Jetblue experience one can expect. Express beverage service was offered and the choices were the usual bottled water, coke, diet coke and sprite, but to celebrate the new flight, mimosas were offered, and baby bottles of sparkling wine and cans of orange juice were passed out. Snacks were a bit unusual today, as Rachel and Ariela passed out the famous Baltimore Berger Cookies. To celebrate the occasion, free gifts, such as Jetblue travel bags, as well as three pairs of roundtrip tickets. The quiz surrounded the inaugural date of Jetblue’s service, Jetblue’s Boston operation, new flights, and for the free tickets, the questions are related to the newest Jetblue’s Pet program and the person, who was able to pull up their pet’s pictures, won a pair of free tickets, as well as the passengers with the oldest penny. Surprisingly, someone carried a 1934 penny.

Descent soon began at 11:27pm and Jetblue staff passed out Jetblue’s luggage tags to everyone. We landed on R/W10 at 12:02pm and parked at gate C4 at 12:06am after receiving a water salute from BWI fire department.

At the BWI gate, the new 16 people BWI team was there to welcome arriving passengers and they were excited to see me wearing my blue crab hat. There was a string quartet playing music and the “Visit Baltimore” team was there. I late got a free t-shirt from them. I immediately seek out the new Baltimore destination poster, which had a seafood market theme, but I miss the Jetblue plane symbol. There is usually a Jetblue plane in the corner or somewhere in the poster. A buffet was setup at C4 featuring Crabcake sandwiches, fruit salad, and another cake, along with full assortment of soft drinks and bottled waters. Soon after, there was a press conference and BWI chief offered their formal welcome to Jetblue, as well as the usual unveiling of the destination poster and the announcement of an one day $9 sale for all Tuesdays and Wednesdays flight between now and November 18, 2009 (and the sale was over by now). Then there was another ribbon cutting ceremony and then the media was invited to visit the plane.

I did not venture out to the ticket counters, as I did not want to miss the obvious press conference. C4 will be the new home for Jetblue and the gate was very convenient, right next to the security checkpoint. I believe Jetblue uses Carousel 12 at the baggage claim. Today the gate was adorned with balloons as well as beach setup. The return flight was a bit more lightly loaded and this time I got the whole exit row to myself. Boarding began at 1:36pm for flight 1324 back to Boston. Door was closed at 1:58pm and we pushed back at 2:02pm, three minutes ahead of scheduled time. There was once again a team of B6 staff, mostly the new BWI team, waving their goodbyes as we taxied out. We headed towards R/W15R and took off at 2:16pm for a short fifty-seven minutes flight to Boston Logan. We stayed at 27,000feet for the return flight.

The same express beverage service was offered, as well as Samuel Adam’s Boston Lager bottled beer. No more gift bag and baggage tag this time, but there were similar lucky draws. Snacks were offered again – Baltimore Berger Cookie, as well as Terra Blue Chips. The flight went by quickly and descent soon began at 2:42pm and we landed on R/W4R at 3:13pm and parked at gate C36 four minutes later.

It was a wonderful experience as usual and I won a Jetblue’s travel bag on my way to BWI by correctly pointing out that BWI was Jetblue’s 31st destination from Boston Logan. I highly recommend taking a Jetblue’s inaugural flight and remember to study a bit of Jetblue history before flying out to win tickets. I recommend the outbound flight as always. My next inaugural flight would be hopefully Virgin America’s launch to Fort Lauderdale on November 18, 2009.

Thanks for reading,
Carfield

Awesome pictures and a nice cold Sam Adams to boot! Great report!

Do not taunt. Do not shake. Do not pander. Add coffee. Subject should be slightly human within an hour.

This goes to show you one need not to travel on a 747 and fly a great distance for a wonderfully descriptive Trip Report. Thank you, I could hear your enthusiasm.
