LX From BOM To ZRH In Y

Background

Had to make a trip to Israel, which kept getting postponed due to my visa being delayed and the holidays in Israel. Finally I had to travel on 11th night. Unfortunately the strike (or as they like to call it - mass leave of absence) by the pilots of 9W, meant finding a suitable itinerary was becoming difficult.

Some of the options were -

1) TK via BOM and IST - IST-TLV was waitlisted and an 8 hr transit @ IST.
2)OS via DEL and VIE - BLR-DEL was fully booked!! Every single airline!! Thanks to 9W cancelling all their flights.

LY does not operate as 11th was Sabbath and none od the Mid East carriers operate to TLV.

LH, BA, AF were not offering any fare to TLV ex- BLR.

Finally we tried LX (which my agent typically ignores as LX requries a Schengen/UK/US visa for transit). LX was offering a good connection via ZRH from BOM. Transit was not an issue as I possessed both US n UK visa.

So my itinerary was :

AI 621 - BLR - BOM (Intnl) (319)
LX-155 - BOM- ZRH (333)
LX-254 - ZRH - TLV (343)

The BLR-BOM sector was done on an AI flight (operated by IC crew on an IC bird VT-SCD). This flight is a feeder to the AI international flights to JFK and LHR from BOM. The advantage for transit passengers was that flight arrived at the international terminal in BOM and thus one could avoid the inter-terminal transfer. However , if you are not booked on an onward AI flight, your baggage would not be through checked and you would need to collect your baggage and go up two levels to the departure level and re-check in.

My flight from BLR to BOM was delayed and I managed to reach the international terminal at BOM only by 11 PM. I called up the Swiss airport office and told them about my connection. They asked me to hurry up since check in was closing in about half an hour. As luck would have it, one of my bags was the absolute last to turn up!! As directed by the LX office, I crossed the Customs check point and took a lift from inside the terminal to the departures level. After I got out of the lift, there was an exit, manned by two policemen, who just wouldn’t let passengers out from that exit!! According to them the exit is only for employees!! I can understand non-employees, not being allowed to get in, but preventing them from going out to a check in counter that’s right next door was preposterous!! And I was not alone, a bunch of connecting pax came up and none of them were allowed to exit. According to the policemen, we had to take the lift back down two levels to the arrivals section, make an exit, then take a lift outside the building and come up two levels and then enter the building!! It would have been a great help, if they had put up a huge sign at the lift in the arrivals section indicating it was for employees only!!
I called up the LX office, since they were the ones who directed me here and they sent a person across, who pleaded with the security guys to let me across as the check in counters were about to close. But they would have none of it and I had to take lift back down.
The Lift outside was hilarious, with a luggage trolley, it would fit in exactly one person only!! There was a small queue of 5 people ahead of me.

After getting my ticket re-examined at the entrance, managed to get inside the departure area and headed straight for the check in area. Thanks to all the “elevator adventure” I was the absolute last passenger to check in. 

Immigration took less than 2 minutes, even during the crowded hour. Security was a different story though. After about 30 minutes , I was airside.

BOM International terminal is in the midst of renovations and every time I visit there are new additions and modifications.

I was one of the last passengers to board the a/c. At the door we were welcomed by a pair of F/As, who directed me to my seat 39B. The economy class was near full with very few vacant seats.
A pillow, blanket and headset were waiting for me @ my seat. While the pillow was comfortable, the blanket cud have been better.

Notice the position of the handset on the arm rest. I had a tough time using tht, with my neighbor taking up a huge part of the common armrest. Wonder why they had to go and put one handset in the middle armrest, instead of the left and right side of either seats!! Would have been a lot more convenient, esp in the two seaters of the A333.

Our Neighbour – 9W A333 to EWR – Thanks to the pilot’s strike , I guess it would be a rather empty flight tonite.

The push back happened around 00:55 , and we were second in line behind an AI 777. After waiting for a 9W 737 to land, we were on our way to ZRH. The take off roll was smooth and not surprisingly, pretty silent.
After about 20 minutes, the seat belt sign was switched off. Cold towel was distributed and the crew began the drinks service.

The moving map on the IFE
http://img183.imageshack.us/img183/7760/pict0016f.jpg

The last time I had travelled on this route, LX had served a near decent meal after take off. But this time around, I was in for a disappointment. 

“ Dinner” – Chicken Croissant and a Jam Cookie (Veg option was a quiche)
http://img12.imageshack.us/img12/6554/pict0017mo.jpg

After the quick “dinner”, decided to explore the IFE system. While it was AVOD, the selection of movies, TV programs and music was very limited. To top it the system is not very intuitive, and I could see that most passengers were having trouble in using the IFE system. The controls are not available as a touch screen option. This combined with my neighbor blockading my handset, made me give up my exploratory trip of the IFE!!

Whoever selected the Indian section, had a great sense of humour… among the Hindi movies was “Jimmy”… the disastrous debut flick of Mimoh (Mithu da’s son).

http://img40.imageshack.us/img40/5136/pict0022tr.jpg

At this point, I decided to take a nap and slept for five hours straight. Woke up just in time for breakfast.
Again breakfast was nothing great to write about. Fruit Cuts (Papaya and Pineapple), Croissant and Bread. Drinks service included coffee and tea.

On my way back to my seat, the crew came along distributing the famous Swiss chocolates.
Soon the captain announced the commencement of descent into ZRH and asked the crew to prepare the cabin for landing. From the moving map it was visible that we were in a holding pattern along the Swiss-German border
Finally we touched down at 6:07 local time at Zurich and taxied to our gate.

Overall, the trip was around a 5 out of 10. The new hard product in LX is definitely not the best in the world. The catering and IFE can be improved a lot. Wasn’t tht much of an issue on an overnight flight, but would be dreadful on a long haul day flight.

I have witnessed the catering on LX go from bad borderline to below bad borderline on long haul flights. By the way that biscuit you got, used to be served to New York as part of a snack but to save costs it is no longer served.

Royal Jordanian fly to TLV. Could you not have tried them?

That's all? on an 8 hour flight to ZRH? now this is what I call cost cutting.

BOM airport is looking better than before, hopefully now it will be a pleasant transit point as 9W has many connections through BOM.

Also, IIRC AI code shares on the LX flight to ZRH, yet they did not check-in through to BLR? that's odd.

thanks for sharing.

Awesome TR, thanks for sharing. I'm surprised that LX isn't that great ex BOM. From a passenger's perspective, it sure does suck to have to fork out hundreds of dollars and not get a well-catered meal. I know the little things count, but it would make a marginal difference if they charged the extra $3 or whatever to cater an intercontinental flight properly.

Good report. Shame about the food. but could this have been because it was an overnight flight? Then again, I haven't taken one of these since 2000 so I wouldn't know. Last time I came from India, it was a day flight on BA. and a full lunch was served...

Thanks for sharing. There are 2 things that I think are very odd.

a) Why can people not holding a Schengen-Visa not connect in ZRH if they're coming in from a no Schengen and connecting to a non Schengen destination? I mean i.e. in FRA this is no problem, as long as they remain airside in transit. Is this different in ZRH? Why? I mean people don't want to enter the country, so why they shall not be allowed transiting?

b) Why can't the lugage not be checked through if you booked this on one ticket? I do understand getting your ownward boarding pass may not be possible, however you could still get it at the transfer counter or gate of your onward LX flight. That AI is not able to check through the luguage seems very strange to me, maybe in India things are different Smile

Great report!

However, I must say I am appalled with the food served. OK, I can understand that with such a late departure most pax just want to sleep - thus a light night snack is appropriate right after departure. But LX should then at least serve a decent and filling breakfast.

If I were on this flight I would have starved.

Nice report, think this is the first Y TR on the LX 333.

Catering looks poor, not impressed with that.

The IFE control location appears poor too, I'm amazed the new IFE system is not touch screen, this is becoming the norm these days.

Regards

Mark

Mea Culpa!!  Smile Got messed up with the LX 333 and the 9W 332. Thanks for pointing it out.

Agree with you completely. Esp. for pax who avoid the over priced airport grub and depend on what is served inflight. Luckily for me, I had tucked in a neat dinner before the flight.

Quoting Buck3y3nut (Reply 4):
but could this have been because it was an overnight flight?

Could have been. Late nite International flights out of India seem to have different definitions of "dinner". OS used to serve a full meal on a flight which departed later as does AI. 9W serves decent snacks. Even LH serves more on a 0230 departure from BLR. LX was a complete shocker.

Quoting Slimcarner (Reply 5):

Yep . It was gate 15 and the slumber zone is rt next door. But personally the slumber zone came at the expense of the Mastercard Lounge. Personal loss  Sad

LX had these rules even before they were a part of schengen. Probably to avoid a diplomatic fiasco, in case of missed connections, w.r.t transit visa and accommodation. We have all heard of the horror stories that seem to come out of CDG.

Well its not India, just Air India that is different. Turns out AI does not have a through checkin facility with LX, even though they have a code share on the latter's flight. The check in agent at BLR informed me that they have the arrangement with LH only. During my earlier trips, 9W offered a through checkin onward. LX agents at the BOM domestic airport took care of my baggage.

Same here. I thot touch screens had become the norm. But the "new" IFE is ages behind the likes of ICE, Krisworld and JetScreen.

I think this is not true. In ZRH you can connect from a non-Schengen country to a non-Schengen without a visa. But of course you are not allowed to enter Switzerland or the other Schengen area.

Good Trip report. Yes true the IFE selection for movies on LX is lmited. Nevertheless you have some months where the selection fits your taste and other months especially then when yo uare on a long haul flight with LX, which often happens to me, and most movies are not to my likings  Wink

Nice report. Glad that you have made it in BOM. Some officials should be more cooperating in such circumstances.

Nice to see the Y interior on board of new LX A330. The seats look more sophisticated than the one I got on A340. But I do understand that an enhanced seat pitch will be more appreciated.

The food ex BOM was indeed disappointing. I would have expected something more substantial. Who caters LX in BOM anyway? Is that LSG?

Thanks for sharing.

The quality of catering from outbound stations seems to really be an issue with LX. Especially in C anf F the catering is not too excellent at various stations. The worst C Class catering is the meals on the day flight out ot TLV for years with the same menu that is NEVER changed and the food being really unedible.
