Hi and welcome to my latest TR. On this TR I travel on Midwest Airlines from New York’s LaGuardia to Kansas City. Then I connect on American to Dallas-Ft. Worth, staying in the Hyatt Regency overnight in DFW and returning to LGA via PHL on US Airways the next day.

Here is a little background as to why my dad and I took this overnight trip. First, I’d never flown on American before, so I knew I had to sooner or later. Second, I’d never flown on Midwest either. I also felt like I was running out of opportunities to fly on the real Midwest Airlines as on 3 November all regular YX Boeing 717 service will end. Plus I’ve also wanted to go to DFW and stay in the Hyatt Regency with its AMAZING runway views.
One bad thing happened during this trip…my camera broke while on the MCI-DFW part of the trip. (some lens error…I got a refund for it so its no big deal...) I just don’t have any return pictures and none from the hotel in DFW…which had amazing views. Because of this I plan to return to DFW sometime in the future.


So…on Saturday the 10th of October 2009 we departed. I set my alarm for 0420 and we were out of the house by 0450 heading for LGA. We hit no traffic and got to LGA around 0510. Our flight was YX 89 at 0700.

Everything was going smoothly until now. The Captain got on the PA and announced we will be delayed with a mechanical. Apparently some engine warning light was lit in the cockpit and the capt wanted to call MKE and see what they suggested to do.
I was starting to think we would not be flying on the 717 today…

Shortly into the flight the two F/A’s started the breakfast and drink service. The choices to purchase for breakfast were 1. Some sort of eggs with potatoes and yogurt and fruit for $8 and a cold selection of a bun with yogurt and fruit for $6. We ordered two $8 meals, but the F/A then informed us she was only stocked one on the entire flight and thankfully we were the first people to purchase a meal. So…I got the only hot meal on the plane. Funny…

I had always read about the MCI terminal design. The whole story about TWA and the ‘driving up to your gate’ thing about the design. It might be a hassle for security but even today I like it. It means less lines at security and you really are closer to your plane. A downside is it makes it harder to explore the gate area…as its broken up.

I am very happy to just have gotten these pictures, but I was also looking forward to taking pictures from DFW. The hotel we stayed in offered amazing views of planes and I plan to return to it.
We returned to New York the next day on two usual flights on US Airways Express.

Nice report and photos as usual JFKMAN. Sorry to here about your camera acting up. I sure now how frustrating that can't be. At least you still got a lot of great shots ! Midwest Signature service on the 717 sure was great and it will be missed for sure. I have had the pleasure of a couple of legs on them, to bad the crews are all loosing their jobs (for now at least). They deserved better.

When we bought the flight it was listed as a 717, but then about two weeks after purchase it got switched to an Embraer.  banghead  Needless to say, I was pretty pissed because I wanted to try the YX 717 one last time.


Will you watch the Cleveland Browns and the Detroit Lions on Sunday? Only if coach Eric Mangini resigned after a loss.

That's odd. Why didn't they take more? I just flew LAX-ATL on DL016 and they didn't have all the breakfast options even though the flight was full. And there had even been some ads for the "premium meals" in the gate prior to boarding...

Yes, the Grand Hyatt at DFW terminal D can be $$$, but even the standard rooms are large and quite luxurious. If you book on the Hyatt website, just request a tarmac/runway side room in the comment section on the res and then request again at check in. They have always been able to honor our requests. Views are great.

That is strange. Loaded only one for the whole plane. Must have been a catering screw up. YX always runs out of selected BOB main entrees before they , but I have found that is standard on all carriers BOB because they don't want the waste of not selling a perishable BOB.

I did not stay in the Grand Hyatt, but the Hyatt Regency. Its cheaper in price, but still a great hotel with amazing runway views.

YX was a great airline. It is not the same now and it never will be. To me, YX does not exist anymore.

AA looks nice too.
