LIN-LHR-STR and the Cisalpino to Milano
Ciao, dear readers,
what about riding the mysterious and somewhat unreliable Cisalpino train through the Swiss alps
and returning by plane from Milano Linate?.
That´s the itinerary for that trip.
and heading for STR´s main train station that Saturday morning.
Deutsche Bahn offers, like the London special, also a special to Milano, only available for the outbound journey.
But, you know, thats not the real problem.
Booked first class for as low as 85.-- Euros for the two of us.
The routing was on the german highspeed train ICE to Zurich, where we had to change for the Cisalpino,
through Switzerland for Lugano with another change to Milano-Centrale.
The Cisalpino is a joint venture between the Swiss and Italian state owned rail companies.
It has a long and painful history with lots of delays, not reliable railcar material and other problems.
Not that long ago it was announced that the company will be liquidated with the winter timetable change and both companys operates own services.
The first ride:
Welcome to Switzerland:
The ride to Zurich was ontime and comfortable. Some surprise at ZRH when we checked the board and our train was not on the screen.
Where´s swiss efficiency?.
A chat with a nice lady at the info counter showed us that our train was cancelled and another one, on standard swiss railcar material running some minutes later to Lugano.
With only three minutes for our LUG connection not the best news.
Yes, looks like Switzerland:
Up the Gotthard:
And down to Lugano:
But ok, the ride was enjoyable through the swiss mountains and the longest rail tunnel in the alps nowadays, the Gotthard for Lugano where we arrived with some minutes more delay. Only to notice that there was no train on the scheduled track. We missed the connection and had to wait for an Eurocity bound for Milano-Centrale.
Some 45 minutes later the EC arrived and finally we had a whole firstclass compartment for us, ok so far.
Milano Centrale:
Our hotel, the Crowne Plaza Milano Centrale was only some corners from the train station.
Our room:
A top modern property with the subway entrance beside and nearly beneath the hotels door, real good.
Time to explore Milano, especially the Duomos rooftop.
The duomo:

Some difficulties with the booking here, so no seat selection or online check-in from the hotel.
Therefore we decided to go some minutes earlier than expected for the airport.
A direct bus service runs from Centrale to Linate, well timed for us.
Arrived at the airport at around 09.30 am, two eco standard check-in counters with rather long lines open.
Three self service kiosks and only another pax in front at the biz/bag drop off counter.
So, tried my luck at the kiosk, and surprisingly, it works, seats selected and checked in within a minute.
Another minute to drop off the bags and let me ask again that question:
Why do all the pax queue at the standard check in and dont use the kiosks?.
It seems not common sense in Italy. The same situation at AZ. Around ten empty kiosks and a much longer line for standard check-in.
Well, so it was. LIN is a oldfashioned building, only rather small check in area´s in need for some refurbishment.
Oldfashioned:
We decided to explore the airport from the outside after check-in. There was a interesting place beside the taxi waiting area with the departing planes directly above us, nice.

Btw, the first time for me at LIN.

Non schengen gates are located in a even smaller area downstairs at the ground level. We saw our plane on arrivals sometimes earlier.
Some ten minutes to wait for passport control with a EI service to Dublin at the same time.

I´ve done several inbound flights for LHR but no outbound from T5 till now, so that connection was warm welcomed.
And why FRA?. STR was pretty more expensive than FRA this time.
We had to go through passport control also with the connecting flight, strange. Thankfully not a long line there and also followed by a separate security check.
No trust to the Italians?.
Back in the gate area some minutes after arrival. A really huge terminal building with good seats and several bars, restaurants and shops, well done here BAA.

Boarding was also here called perfectly ontime, two female, two male FA´s, ok so far, but not that friendly like on the earlier leg.

Retour at STR around one our later and with lots of new impressions on the way back home.
The Cisalpino does everything to secure its negative reputation. The ride trough Switzerland was real nice, but also here flying remains preference no. 1.
Two good experiences on BA, average fare per pax per leg was lower than 50 Euros, well done!.
And further?: The Budapest Air Service and my premiere on the E120 to Zagreb coming up, hopefully, soon.

That's another enjoyable tripreport from your hands! As it should be, from real globetrotters!
I must say, one comment from Switzerland;
Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter): The ride trough Switzerland was real nice, but also here flying remains preference no. 1.
I would personally take the train here. I really like the Swiss landscape and nature, and you only can really enjoy this from a board a train. But, low altitude over the Alps by plane can also be breathtaking!
Good catch with 2 'new' Airbus'ses to your logbook. Not that easy for you nowadays. I think you've flown most of them meanwhile
How about the sandwiches/service on BA? Any pics? I wonder about their latest service for the inner-Europe product.
Regards,
Eric
Flying is finished for 2009. In 2010: I booked to secure the Q400 on a new route from LCY, for January...

Hallo Markus,
A very enjoyable read (watch?) from your short Milano trip. Shame about the Cisalpino train - that definitely doesn't sound like Swiss efficiency to me. Maybe it's the Italian part of the joint venture
How long did the train journey(s) take in total?
I liked those pictures of LIN, reminded me of my single time there two years ago, departing on AP to FCO. Of course the IG MD-80 pictures were especially close to my heart, as you know I just recently booked such a flight for next year.
Milan otherwise is a city I don't like that much - can't quite put my finger on it but I didn't really enjoy my stay there some years ago. After that time I've only visited the airports a few times.
Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter): Cockpit crew was in a better mood, the guys from the UK and the captain with a friendly and very long detailed information during boarding.
This happens very often with British and American flight crews - very often there are good, detailed information about the route regarding flight path, sights etc. That's something I really like - unfortunately it doesn't happen very often in Europe. I've flown with some chatty German captains (AB and LH) but usually they only give the detailed information im Deutsch and the English version is a somewhat condensed version. Fortunately I understand German enough to make most of it...
Thanks for posting and looking forward for the BUD/ZAG trip.

Hi Markus,
very good report about another interesting train/plane combination from your side. The City of Milan looks great and you were obviously lucky with the weather.
Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter): what about riding the mysterious and somewhat unreliable Cisalpino train through the Swiss alps

Good idea, although you ended up in a "regular" train in the end. Maybe you still remember that a few years ago the Cisalpino went all the way to our home town Stuttgart as there was still a direct rail link Milan - Zurich - Stuttgart. I remember having had a few rides on the Cisalpino between Stuttgart and Zurich.
Good to hear that BA offered a good intra-European product once again, and for the price you really can't complain.

And the pics of your loyal travel companion are so cute!
Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter): Why do all the pax queue at the standard check in and dont use the kiosks?.
I don't know but I would rather not bother it and instead take advantage of the situation.
Quoting Airbuseric (Reply 1): How about the sandwiches/service on BA? Any pics? I wonder about their latest service for the inner-Europe product.
I'm also curious about the service. What did they serve, just cookies or sandwiches? I recently got a sandwich on a MUC-LHR flight, probably because it was an early morning departure.

Hi Markus,
I'm playing ctach-up again.....Nice to read about another plane/train combo at such an attractive price. It was certainly worth 1st class, those Zurich-Lugano trains are usually packed at the weekend.
I too absolutely love your photgraphs of the alps, great to see LUG from above, only you were a bit higher than me! Can't help you with the small airfield though. Tried looking at google maps at the obvious ones but no luck.

Those ladies are always friendly it's a good job you made the connection though with only 3 minutes to go.
Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter): and the longest rail tunnel in the alps nowadays, the Gotthard for Lugano
If you don't mind me correcting you, the Lötschberg base tunnel is the longest in the Alps at present at 34.6kms. It was opened 2 years ago. The current Gotthard rail tunnel is a mere 15kms, the base tunnel to be opened in 2017 will be a whopping 57kms and the longest in the world.
Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter): We had to go through passport control also with the connecting flight, strange. Thankfully not a long line there and also followed by a separate security check.

Secrurity I can understand but I'm guessing the passport control is due to the fact that you're travelling Schengen-Non Schengen-Schengen.
Encouraging to hear that despite BA's problems you had two enjoyable flights!
Thanks for posting

actually they wanted to ged rid off them earlier, but new 738s are joining the fleet so you might be right that they won't be around after winter.
didn't know Tailwind is operating on behalf of H9 (eventhough H9 has a lot of aircrafts in the fleet...).

I´ve followed that booked flights closely on Acars and libhomeradar.
Hope that XQ stay with the 752, scheduled till know.

on the Tailwind domestic and the IzAir A319 to STR.
