This was another one of my non-revenue trips to South America - one week in Brazil! We spent a few days in Rio de Janeiro, but the highlight of the trip was our time on the beautiful island of Ilha Grande (IG). IG was a serene island full of great beaches and spectacular rain forests. I couldn't get enough of it! As always, a special thanks to CO for its enjoyable BusinessFirst accommodations  Smile

CO129 IAH-GIG

I started my trip in San Francisco (SFO) with a three-hour connection in IAH. The flight was wide open with over 75 seats available, so the gate agents cleared the standby seats 75 minutes prior to departure. My girlfriend and I ran over to the Presidents Club for a few pre-departure drinks and then ran back to the gate in time for boarding.

We were comfortably seated in seats 6K and 6L, among my favorite aboard the 764. I like sitting in the middle of the BF cabin to avoid the noise and galley lights that annoy the first and last rows (1 and 7). As usual, the flight attendants offered us champagne and distributed the amenity kits and dinner menus.

We pushed on-time from E18 and taxied to runway 15L for an uneventful departure. As an airplane-food lover, I was anxiously awaiting the dinner service!

Here's the menu:

TO BEGIN

Warm roasted nuts with your preferred cocktail or beverage

LATE NIGHT SUPPER

APPETIZER SALAD and warm breads

Fresh seasonal greens and frisée with sliced tomato, red onion,
corn and a Kalamata olive

Your choice of Cabernet Sauvignon vinaigrette

added to your salad

Freshly baked garlic bread and assorted rolls with butter

I thoroughly enjoyed the salad with the crab and shrimp. CO's vinaigrette's are always light and tasty, and their salads never disappoint.

Next up, the entree! I often choose the "chef's selection" which is always some type of steak or filet mignon. However, I was in a different mood and chose the chicken instead - moist and flavorful!

http://i257.photobucket.com/albums/hh232/chiudog/Brazil/CO129Dinner.jpg

I'm also a big fan of CO's ice cream sundaes - a necessity for any in-flight meal  Smile As usual, I requested caramel and nuts, and it was tasty!

I settled in for the 10 hour flight and slight quite well. While I'm anxiously awaiting CO's new lie-flat BusinessFirst seats, I still enjoy my rides in the current (or "old") BF seats. After several hours of sound sleeping, I awoke to the lights and sounds of the flight attendants preparing the breakfast service.

On CO, breakfast always starts with a nice fruit bowl.

http://i257.photobucket.com/albums/hh232/chiudog/Brazil/CO129Breakfast.jpg

I chose the omelet with sausage and ham. Maybe my appetite has shrunk in the last few years or maybe the portions have grown - but I had trouble finishing the entire breakfast. CO serves so much food in their BF cabins that I rarely finish it all.

After breakfast, I freshened up and took some photos of the descent and arrival into GIG.

If you look closely, you can see the raked wing-tip of the 764.

Turning final for GIG.

Final approach.

Taxiing into the gate.

Once again, a special thanks to CO for a great flight!

CO128 GIG-IAH

There wasn't a whole lot to see on this flight since the whole thing was at night. I just took a few photos of my food and slept. The one notable thing on this flight is that being seated in 1A and 1B, we were freezing the entire flight! I asked the flight attendant to warm the cabin, and apparently, these seats in particular are always cold. Below is the menu:

TO BEGIN

Warm roasted nuts with your preferred cocktail or beverage

LATE NIGHT SUPPER

APPETIZER SALAD and warm breads

Blend of frisée, radicchio and green and red leaf lettuce,
with red bell pepper, sliced quail egg and black olive

Your choice of balsamic vinaigrette or creamy cilantro dressing

For your enjoyment, lobster medallions may be added
to your salad

Freshly baked garlic bread and assorted rolls with butter

MAIN COURSES

The Chef’s Selection

Grilled tenderloin steak accented by green peppercorn sauce,
with roesti potatoes and sautéed button mushrooms,
seasoned carrots, turnip and zucchini

Roasted Breast of Chicken

With demi-glace and Creole sauce, mashed potatoes with olives
and sun-dried tomatoes, grilled carrots and zucchini
marinated in chimichurri sauce

Surubim and Shrimp

Grilled surubim fish and sautéed shrimp over jasmine rice,
with moqueca sauce, a Bahian-style tomato sauce with coconut
milk, red and green bell peppers, onions, garlic and cilantro

Pasta Bowl

Tortelloni pasta filled with artichoke and mint with marinara
sauce, vegetable ratatouille and freshly grated Parmesan cheese

FRUIT AND CHEESE PLATE

Select cheeses, grapes and crackers, served with Port wine

DESSERT CART

Vanilla ice cream with choice of toppings or an assortment
of petite pastries and cakes

Fresh Brew® gourmet roasted regular and decaffeinated coffee
made exclusively for Continental Airlines, hot chocolate
or tea with your choice of milk or lemon

Enjoy a cup of freshly brewed Emilio Caffè Italian Espresso
or Cappuccino available exclusively in BusinessFirst
on our 777 and 767 aircraft.

and a cherry tomato

Selected Cereal

I love CO's garlic bread. It's probably not the healthiest thing I could eat, but darn it - it's good!

http://i257.photobucket.com/albums/hh232/chiudog/Brazil/CO128Bread.jpg

The fish and shrimp were quite tasty, too.

http://i257.photobucket.com/albums/hh232/chiudog/Brazil/CO128Dinner.jpg

And finally, another filling breakfast prior to our arrival into IAH.

Thanks for reading! Hope you enjoyed my report. I'm mustering the patience and strength to write reports for many of my other non-revenue trips to amazing locales including SYD, SCL, EZE, NRT, AMS, CPT, ARN, and more! Comments are appreciated.

Hello(!),

Just to say merci for the report etc. The food looked pretty damn nice. I'm flying to Chicago OHare next week and have booked a couple of day trips on American Airlines and United but I had completely forgotton that Continental existed. Might try to book a flight on them (they're the ones who still serve free food right!).

Many thanks,

Pierre.

Yes, CO still serves complimentary food in domestic Y during meal times and flights that are at least a few hours long.

That is my favorite part of the meal, when I was flying FRA-EWR they asked me if I wanted another!

I wish I didn't get the middle seat on EWR-FRA-EWR!!

Awesome, Awesome Trip Report, CO's product never fails to amaze me

Nice pictures, food looks pretty darn good.

My own CO food experiences have been mixed, however it seems like you enjoyed yours.

I wish CO would change their cutlery, that pattern looks quite out of place on a plane.

Regards

Mark

Good to hear you had a good time in Rio and Ilha Grande. Next time try to visit Buzios!

Interesting to note the load was not good. CO uses the B764 on the route apparently performance of the flight is quite good in terms of loads and yields.

Rgs,

There's quite a bit of oil traffic that keeps this flight full. I just luckily chose some convenient dates for non-revenue travel  Smile
