INTRODUCTION

Hello fellow A.netters,

Welcome to the last part of the trip report of my Christmas holiday in Madrid. As promised, this section will cover the New Year’s Eve and the return flight to Amsterdam. In case you are interested in the first part, just follow this link.

During our stay in Madrid, we had company of Tim (aka Vandenheuvel), a fellow A.netter. He has written his own report as well. Just follow this link.

A.NETTER MEETING

Tim had sent me an e-mail that he would be arriving in MAD on 30 December. My partner and I did however not check our mail until the day of our departure back to AMS, so we did not see the following notification of Tim that he was coming. On 30 December I just sent him a message on his mobile late in the afternoon, not knowing on what time his arrival would be. It turned out that Tim got my message when his flight had not landed at all. Hence his later reply. But, I felt asleep by the time he tried to call me back and therefore on my turn missing his call.

When I woke up and noticed Tim’s voice mail, I called back and made an appointment to meet him at our hotel. He was not far away and could be with us within ten minutes. So, I notified the hotel reception desk accordingly.

I was surprised when our room telephone rang minutes later and got Tim on the phone. He apparently was not allowed to proceed. So, I told my partner that I would greet him. I went out of my room and my partner followed not long after.

We invited Tim to join us having a dinner at the so called Cerveceria (beer shop) just across the street.

Candid photo taken earlier at the Cerveceria

After dinner, we made the following appointment with Tim to come together the following day at 10.00 p.m. at our hotel for the New Year’s Eve at Puerta de Sol.

NEW YEAR’S EVE

For the afternoon I made an appointment with Eric (aka IberiaA319) at 16.30. At the beginning, we decided to wait for it at our hotel room. But, we were politely requested to vacate the room as the housekeeping had to tidy it up. So, off we were to our early mentioned Cerveceria.

About five minutes past 16.30 I received a mobile phone call from Eric that he was nearby. I went out searching Eric. Due to a little miscommunication, we could just met up each other ten minutes later. But it did not matter and we went back to the Cerveceria to meet my partner.

Eric, my partner and I engaged in a nice conversation for more than two hours in full possession of some drinks. He was great and telling us about places worth visiting in Madrid including a nice spotter’s location at Barajas. We did not go there though.

Eric however preferred to stay at home to celebrate the New Year’s Eve as he has been at Puerta del Sol many times before.

After saying goodbye to Eric, my partner and I got back to the hotel to enjoy our Sylvester dinner.

Dining

Me at the dining table

Unfortunately, I forgot to take picture of our main meal. We realized it when our desserts were served. I am sorry for that.

We had got two choices of dessert.

Pancake with mango ice cream

Almond tart with vanilla ice cream

We just finished our dinner, when one of the waiters notified us of the arrival of Tim. Three of us went up to our room. You know what, We were surprised of what we saw on the writing table.

A complimentary bottle of champagne with two bags of twelve grapes

Wow, our hotel really went beyond our expectation! I asked for another champagne glass for Tim. And soon, we were each enjoying a glass champagne! A bit early, I know, but still…

About fifteen minutes before midnight, we went to Puerta del Sol. I must say, it was packed!

People all over the place

There was no way to reach Puerta del Sol

Tim and I

I got my bag of grapes ready before it turned twelve o’clock. Unfortunately, we could not hear anything. Suddenly, I noticed in the far distance, “Feliz 2010. Then the fireworks came into an action.

Firework

More firework

The public were getting wild

It was indeed crowded. But I really enjoyed it.

Christmas tree at Callao

We returned to the hotel and wished the hotel’s personnel on duty that night a Happy New Year.

Many thanks for them

Tim did not want to miss the metro, so he had to leave short after.

After checking out just after 11.00 in the morning, my partner and I still had plenty of time before leaving for the airport. We gratefully used the left luggage service of our hotel and went out for a last minute shopping. Most of the shops surprisingly remained closed on the New Year’s Day. We strolled around about an hour and a half and finally we dropped by at an internet café at the first opportunity to check in on-line.

Web check-in

I thought that we would be able to change seats during the on-line check in. We smoothly navigated through the system until it refused to let us proceed with the seat selection. We were stuck with our preselected seats 42A and B and asked to finalize our check-in at the airport.

As there was no reason to stay longer in the city, we collected our luggage and caught the metro to the airport.

AT THE AIRPORT

Airport arrival

We arrived at 13.30 at the airport, all the way with the metro. How easier could it be?

FIDS just outside the metro ticketing office

Close up

Clear signage

Do you remember the walkway picture on my first report? In between the walkways, there are showcases displaying child drawings. It did not catch my attention earlier until I came back.

Some of the drawings

It was a rather long walk to the assigned check-in desk. However it gave me the opportunity of capturing some interesting sights.

A real DC-9 displayed outside just on the opposite

Check-in desk signage

The crowd at Easy jet’s check in desks

Air Europa’s passengers checking in for Punta Cana

I was absorbed in my amazement that I did not realize that Tim was there. He had been waiting in the KE’s check-in line. All of us were number four in sequence.

Check-in

At 14.10, the check in desks were prepared to open. The queuing lines were set for First, Morning Calm, Elite members and Economy Class.

Skyteam’s member flag

Two of the four assigned check in desks

The queue was moving quickly and we were soon attended by the only male check-in attendant of the airline. We handed over our tickets and passports and the guy started typing.

Well, here again he went on typing and typing. He looked around him at his colleagues and tried to attract their attention. We did not get worried, only surprised of the expression on his face like he was dealing with some passengers without any valid travel documents.

At one stage, I heard him muttering, “They have been checked in. I do not understand it.”
I could not help replying, “We have. Through the internet,”
“Aha,” now he got it.
The whole process took about ten minutes before we received our boarding passes.

My boarding pass

Then Tim came forward, he tried to secure a window seat in a row just in front of or behind ours. Unfortunately, the flight was again fully booked. He had settle down with the only window seat available at 33A.

Since three of us had brought some water, we tried to finish it as much as we could and went outside to get rid of it.

The public area of Terminal 1

I have read some bad reviews about the security control at Barajas. But I experienced it myself, I did not have any trouble at all. In fact, the security guards were surprisingly friendly and the control was painless. We were firstly met by a female security guard, who inquired about the language we speak and then giving clear instructions accordingly. Less than ten minutes, we were through.

We got held up before the border check. A couple being attended at the passport control desk kept the controller quite busy for a while as he scrutinized their travel documents over and over again. We were number three in sequence and later number four as the Iberia’s disabled passenger service had to cut the line. But still, it did not take long.

Post security check and the immigration

Upon entering the passenger area, I noticed an empty smoking room which could give us an opportunity to get a better view of the apron. As this place was reserved for the customers of a restaurant nearby, Tim bought my partner and me a can of San Miguel to justify our stay there.

Unfortunately, this exclusive smoking room was closed permanently due to the smoking prohibition throughout the terminal except at the dedicated places by the Spanish airport authority.

That’s why the smoking room remained unoccupied

We secured a table next to the window. Despite the play of light, I managed to take some pictures. As three of us stuck together, don’t get surprised if you notice some nearly identical photos with those on Tim’s report.

As we finished our beer, we strolled around to the B gates.

As we could not go further to the Schengen area, we decided to walk back towards our gate. Underway, we saw a long line forming by departing MS passengers. It was past three o’clock in the afternoon.

I did not know that the farthest part of Terminal A could give such airy feeling. I assume that it has been constructed not too long ago.

Our gate as indicated on our boarding passes

I must say, Tim and I made a clever use of my partner. As he was looking after our belongings, both of us could walk around doing some spotting.

Spanish airliners

MD’s gathering

While passing by the FIDS, we noticed a gate change of our flight.

At 16.00, our beauty appeared.

Hello, we are here!

Where are you going?

I got a funny feeling about what I saw. So I looked up again at the gate screen.

Surprise, surprise!

Looks familiar?

We still had to wait, so I just played around with my camera.

UX E90

At the end, passengers bound for the States in line for body search

MS just after push back and obviously running late

The sitting area around the gate remained empty until about half past four when most of the passengers of our flight, Korean in common, arrived.

Boarding

Past 16.50, the boarding call was made. But they did not follow the sequence like Premium and disabled passengers first and then the others. Everyone just stood up.

A bit rushed but still civilized

The crowd in the aerobridge

Only Korean newspapers as Tim has mentioned before

Seconds before entrance

Again, I got my note book ready, “Annyeonghaseyo,”
“Annyeonghaseyo,” the cabin attendants replied with a genuine smile.

ON BOARD

From this moment, three of us had to split our way. Tim was sitting at 33A. My partner and I at 42A and B.

The immaculate cabin

Our seats

Seat guide

Again, the oldest Y interior and therefore no PTV’s.

Legroom

Seat control unit

In the seat pocket, there were similar things as the outward flight from AMS except for:

Inflight magazine, the first year edition

Duty free shopping guide

And ironically a personal IFE guide

Do you remember Tim’s remark about the mother and daughter stowing their belongings? Finally, they vacated the aisle so that the other passengers could come through.

Window view

The cabin attendants appeared and check out the passengers having ordered a special meal. It looked like we were soon prepared for departure. But eventually until about fifteen minutes after departure time, nothing happened.

The pilot finally came to the intercom that due to the traffic congestion, we got the sequence number thirty five and would not leave the next two hours. As Tim had said, everyone got agitated. Another announcement was made, first in Korean and then in English. But it was so unclear and not understandable at all.

However, the passengers surprisingly remained calm. They just made up their own amusement, like reading books, playing cards or other things.

This guy was just enjoying his mini laptop

And me just taking more pictures.

A FR Boeing was docked next to us

I had to go the toilet as well.

Prepared for an red eye flight

Spotless

Then I spotted this.

Ladies only toilet

Isn’t it attentive? So please, ladies, keep other toilets unoccupied!

In-flight (or ground service?)

As the waiting time was still undefined. The cabin attendants started the meal and drink run.

While the meals were being distributed, another announcement came in that we should leave within the next hour.

Another scrumptious meal service

Hot meal!

Turbulence free meal time

Again, KE managed to top everything of Y service for the route. We had got shrimp salad as starter, beef as hot meal and apple cake as dessert. The shrimp salad was a bit bland, but there were seasonings available. The beef was yummy. Tender cooked in a delicious sauce. The apple cake had more nutmeg than cinnamon, but it was still OK.

“What do you want to drink, sir?” asked the cabin attendant when handing out our meal tray.
We overheard the conversation between him and his colleague about pouring a glass of white wine during serving the row before us so they must have got red wine as well.
“Red wine, please,” both my partner and I replied.
“Wait a moment, please. We will come back to you.”
Apparently, they did not have standard the wine bottles on the meal trolley. So, one had to go down to the galley and returned with the wine.

Red wine

It was getting dark outside, minimizing my opportunity to get a more decent photo.

Dusk

Hey, that’s not fair!

About an hour after the ETD, the cabin attendants did the coffee and tea run. This time, we were into a cup of coffee. A striking thing when we got served our coffee, was the caring remark, “Be careful, sir. It is very hot!” How lovely!

The meal trays were cleared up. When one of the cabin attendant, Yang, arrived at our row, the trolley was full so that she had to leave us behind with our dirty trays. Later on, Yang returned and apologized for making us waiting so long. It did not really matter, but what a nice gesture!

At 18.55 the safety check was conducted and five minutes later, the pushback commenced.

Our Airbus started to move for a long taxi to runway 15L – 33R.

Terminal 4S

Again

Entering the runway

We started to accelerate and a powerful take off commenced.

Our routing would be Madrid – San Sebastian – Bordeaux – Tours – Chartres – Beauvais – Amiens – Lille – Rotterdam – Amsterdam.

In-flight entertainment

It would be a peaceful flight especially for the cabin attendants. When we leveled off, the passengers started to recline to catch some sleep. Like Tim, I felt sorry for ICN bound passengers. For the sake of the passengers, the lights were dimmed.

Cabin view

First Y section with lights on

Second Y section with lights dimmed

Other in-flight service

At the back of the plane, KE has a disabled toilet as well.

About half an hour into the flight, the cabin attendants started a water run.

I went backwards to engage a conversation with the cabin attendants. Yang and Kim were chatting, when I approached and wished both of them a Happy New Year, “Saehae bokmanhi bateuseyo,”
I just had to give them complements on several things. Firstly, they had dealt proactively with the delay in MAD. Secondly, KE has the best Y service for AMS-MAD leg in comparison with their Skyteam partner KLM for instance.

Kim remarked, “Shall we go to the galley so that we are not disturbing other passengers?”
I happily followed her and Yang.

I asked both Kim and Yang politely to provide some additional flight details. Upon ringing the cockpit, they could tell me that our captain’s name was Sung Jong Park. Further, they told me that there were two cockpit members and ten cabin members. Two attendants were serving F, another two J and the rest Y. One of the cabin attendant happened to come from China. Apparently, KE recruits cabin members from all over Asia like Malaysia and China and also from one European country, Russia.

At the end, I asked whether I could have a photo with them. But they were too shy. As a compensation, they revealed the content of the drink trolley for me.

After the nice chat, I returned to my seat.

About forty five minutes before landing, the cabin attendants came along with trays of water and fruit juices. Kim was doing our side.
“Gomapseumnida” I thanked her in Korean.

Twenty minutes before landing, the lights were switched on again for the landing preparation. Ten minutes later, the last control was conducted. Kim appeared next to our seat and wished my partner and me, “Have a nice trip!”
Again, I was gladly surprised.

ON ARRIVAL

Minutes before landing

Touchdown

We taxied from the Kaagbaan to the G-platform. Unfortunately, I have got not many pictures right here.

Docked to the G gate again

As I expected, the passengers bound for ICN were requested to disembark together with their belongings and boarding passes. I was happy that we were not among them.

Disembarking

At the door, a ground attendant was ready to hand over a transit card to the onward passengers.
“Are you going to Seoul?” she asked when it was our turn.
“No, thank you. We would rather to stay here this time,”

Last shot of our beauty

Tim was waiting for us outside the aerobridge. Again, it was my first experience at Schiphol on the New Year’s Day.

Deserted pier

Three of us proceeded to the baggage claim area. My partner said that he would not be surprised if our luggage would be there when we passed the border control. And you know what? He was right.

VERDICT

Korean Air is a pleasure to fly with within Europe. On the other hand, they would not be my first choice to fly intercontinental unless all their airplanes are fitted with AVOD.

And the most memorable of all? Of course the meeting with Tim and Eric. Eric is really someone I can rely on for our trip to Madrid. And Tim is a great company to travel around with. I am happy that my partner, Eric, Tim and I can get along with each other.

To put this trip report into a conclusion, I would like to say,
”Tim, hartelijk dank voor de prachtige Kerstvakantie!”
“Eric, ha sido mucho gusto conocerte. Y gracias por todo!”

I hope you enjoy my Christmas trip report. Please, feel free to leave comments and suggestions!

Cheers,
Suryo

Wow, that's bad. But at least they served dinner. That happend to me once on a Shanghai Airlines flight in late 2008. Military operations delayed our departure, so dinner was served while we were waiting on the ground.

Hola Suryo!

Thanks again for this wonderful TR.

I really enjoyed going through all the pictures and text. I remember I was in Madrid once and it was really MAD.

BTW, I was looking forward to seeing a picture of you with the twelve grapes in your mouth, it is always lots of fun and quite surprising for foreigners.  Smile
KE seems to perform an excellent service on board, on the ground... or wherever they are faced to.

All the best for the just started year. Happy Flying!

Salut!

Hi Akhmad

Enjoyed part - 2 as well!

I don't see any reason for passengers to get pissed off if the reasons for delay and the subsequent evens are handled efficiently by the crew.

Too bad their A332s aren't equipped with PTVs. I wonder if it is the same for the A333 as well.

Thanks for sharing

Very nice TR Suryo. KE's service looks quite impressive, notably the meal, which is extremely nice for such a short segment (even one that is a tag-on to a long flight). The IFE is a bit disappointing, though the cabin of the 332 looks immaculate.

These "exotic" fifth freedom flights are really intriguing to me. I will have to try LA's JFK-YYZ and CX's JFK-YVR some time (though the latter is not a short flight).

Nice follow up report Suryo - looks like you had a really great time in Madrid.

The spotting pictures @ MAD remind me of my need to return, has been too long, thankfully I'm heading there for a day trip in a few months.

KE sure look like a great carrier for Y class passengers, though thye lack of individual IFE would deter some passengers.

Hoi Suryo!

Thanks for the completion of your trip. Good catch, another KE A332. Now only HL7538 is missing in your 'flightlog'. They only operate 3 if the -200 series!

Nice pictures from Madrid. Is all the construction work at Plaza del Sol finished by now? I was there in July and it was mostly closed off for pedestrians. Nice to see so many people on the streets there. It's different then Amsterdam, to say at least  Wink

Good gesture of the hotel to get the champs too. I like these little extras. Got it once when it was my birthday, in an Antwerp hotel (Best Western). Including a letter signed by all staff saying congratulations to my b'day. How nice and what an eye for detail it was, since they got my date of birth from the passport details upon check-in.

As said, good to meet up with the other members. Let's see if I can meet up with more a.netters in 2010 too.

Regards,
Eric

Sure!
It is believed to bring good luck to eat one grape for every stroke at midnight.
Just a tradition as eating lentils in Italy, wearing some red underwear on Silvester's night, and many more anywhere.
BTW, it was started by some vine growers in the 1890s in the Vinalopó area, Valencia area, as they had a mass production and did not know what to do with them, since then... every Spanish table is stuffed with grapes that night. You can buy them with pips, without, already peeled, etc.... just marketing.

Salut!

Roger

Suryo,

Great TR with accompanying pictures...
Since I'll be flying AMS-ICN-SGN v.v. next month, I know now what to expect regarding (non)AVOD and catering...seat-pitch looks fine, though...

Thanks.

I will have to try LA's JFK-YYZ and CX's JFK-YVR some time (though the latter is not a short flight).

So, what are you waiting for?  wink

Nice follow up report Suryo - looks like you had a really great time in Madrid.

Thank you. I really enjoyed Madrid with all the company.

Quoting BA319-131 (Reply 13):
I'm heading there for a day trip in a few months.

That will be in April. Am I correct?

Quoting BA319-131 (Reply 13):
KE sure look like a great carrier for Y class passengers, though thye lack of individual IFE would deter some passengers.

Correct. I would not be too eager to fly them Y intercontinental. I am just spoiled with the AVOD experience.

@Nicholas:

Quoting NZ107 (Reply 14):
Another great read to complete the mini series. Thanks for the look around Madrid and nice photos accompanying the report.

You are welcome. Thanks for reading.

You have got the answer from Roger.  wink

Quoting NZ107 (Reply 14):
Very interesting. Never seen that one before!

Me neither. Until then.

Quoting NZ107 (Reply 14):
Meal looked good, especially for the short run.

Definitely. I bet it must have been the most generous portion in Y for that leg.

Quoting NZ107 (Reply 14):
They were lucky that you had such a long waiting time because everything would have had to been stowed away for takeoff anyway..

The crew had anticipated it adequately. The waiting time was as long as the flying time anyway.

Quoting NZ107 (Reply 14):
With a sign: "For Disabled Persons Only"?

I did not really pay attention to it, so I don't know. The crew ushered me to this one though when I told them I needed to go the toilet.

Quoting NZ107 (Reply 14):
It's nice you got such friendly flight attendants! I bet they were happy to get dinner out of the way as well!

Certainly. They had more time to socialize with each other and an aviation geek like me! Big grin

Good catch, another KE A332. Now only HL7538 is missing in your 'flightlog'. They only operate 3 if the -200 series!

KE website indicates that they also have their A332 equipped with AVOD. It has to be HL7538!

Quoting Airbuseric (Reply 15):

I think so. None of the pedestrian ways was closed off any more.

Hi Suryo,

Thanks for the wonderfull second part of your report.

Quoting Akhmad (Thread starter):
I felt asleep by the time he tried to call me back and therefore on my turn missing his call.

After some frustration, I was really happy when you called me.

Quoting Akhmad (Thread starter):
We invited Tim to join us having a dinner at the so called Cerveceria (beer shop) just across the street.

Great 'bearshop'. The food was fine, as was the estrella.

Quoting Akhmad (Thread starter):
Almond tart with vanilla ice cream

I lived on crisps and candy that night. I wish I thought about going to a restaurant.

Quoting Akhmad (Thread starter):
I asked for another champagne glass for Tim.

I am still thankfull for this. The champaign was great.

Quoting Akhmad (Reply 1):
who inquired about the language we speak and then giving clear instructions accordingly.

Security was very well done. I never met such helpfull security staff before. Again I was happy I've got my shaving machine through.

Quoting Akhmad (Reply 1):
don’t get surprised if you notice some nearly identical photos with those on Tim’s report.

I think I have about the same photo of the TAM aircraft. It is so nice I can actually remember you taking these photos.

Quoting Akhmad (Reply 1):
I must say, Tim and I made a clever use of my partner.

I forgot how it was traveling with a non aviation freak. I have to do this more often. Not to mention the guaranteed window seats.

Quoting Akhmad (Reply 1):
UX E90

I didn't know UX operated Embraers. Weird enough I didn't notice this aircraft.

Quoting Akhmad (Reply 1):
Do you remember Tim’s remark about the mother and daughter stowing their belongings?

Believe it or not. The guy is standing right there. In the aisle of course.

Quoting Akhmad (Reply 1):
Ladies only toilet

Finally, those ladies stop making a mess of our toilets.

I have seen this before, though nobody seemed to understand it.

Quoting Akhmad (Reply 1):
As a compensation, they revealed the content of the drink trolley for me.

Thats a great gesture. Knowing you would be happy with that.

Quoting Akhmad (Reply 1):
”Tim, hartelijk dank voor de prachtige Kerstvakantie!”

Jullie ook erg bedankt voor de leuke tijd. Doe je partner de groeten.

Quoting Akhmad (Reply 19):
I have to stay at home for the rest of the week due to a severe cold.

Sad to hear this. Good luck on this.

Tim,

Oh yes. I can happily look back on the moments.

Thanks. I hope I will recover in the weekend.

Looks like a Samsung NC10 , I have one but in black, great things to have on the move.
