Well, I woke up one morning last week thinking it was about time I should head out on a vacation. I bought my mom and grandma and me tickets to Paris in March, but I couldn't wait that long to fly on an aircraft. So I looked around and found a decent night before fare to Istanbul from OKC and booked it.
UA735
OKC-DEN
A319
8F (Economy Plus)
Here are a few pics of the aircraft heading into OKC and to the gate:
The aircraft was N641UA and A319
The legroom in economyPLus was very ample as shown here:
Some in flight pics taking off from OKC: ]
The flight to DEN was smooth. We took off from the south of the airport as there was a north wind, and it was your typical OKC-DEN flight. Seems you know when you enter Colorado because all of the crops turn into circles and not squares.
Landing in DEN was quite smooth, which is abnormal it seems for this airport. Most of my flights here are incredibly turbulent on approach. Here are some taxi shots:
I had found out at OKC that they could not book me into my assigned seats for the LH and TK flights. I was bummed because I thought I had booked it, and I thought I had a window seat. I went to the LH desk at DEN, but they could only get me an aisle. CRAP i thought!
But as it turns out, I heard a guy screaming at a CSR for LH about how they gave him a window when he wanted and aisle so I said I would trade him. The CSR really appreciated it I think.
Here's the main terminal at DEN
And some random shots around DEN:
Here's me waiting at "Mesa Verde" Restaurant for a delayed flight from FRA. Apparently there was a snow storm at FRA which delayed the flight. I look like a douchebag
And finally, the aircraft I had been waiting to fly on, that beast, the A340-600 arrived at DEN from FRA.
Here are some pics of it being readied for the long flight to FRA:
Here is the BA flight headed to LHR
Flight LH446
9:30Hrs
I had 57K which was a window, and the legroom was not as good as United Economy Plus, but the aircraft simply sparkled. The rego was D-AIHX which I believe is fairly new.
The cabin crew were well dressed and very proper. They were a joy to work with!
The cabin:
The below deck lavs:
The food was on par with any economy international service, with one minor exception, LH does give you the hot towel service, which I really do like!
The next few images are of the sunrise with that beautiful A346 wing, enjoy:

Here is breakfast. Nothing fancy, but it was good all the same:
The cabin as we start our descent into FRA
Believe it or not, that is an LH MD-11 along side us as we descend into FRA
Our shadow:
On final descent into FRA after holding some time. I guess their snow storm has things slowed up a bit:
My thoughts on FRA. It's great if you don't have a long layover, but in my case I did. Due to the weather the inbound TK flight was delayed an hour, and it's hard to find a place to sit, especially when many flights are delayed. They didn't assign a gate to TK1590 for a long time, so you just walk around like a chicken with it's head cut off. I ended up boarding TK1590 about an hour late and arrive in IST around 11:55PM. Ataturk is a nice airport from what I could see. Customs and Visa immigration were very easy, and in reality, it's a nicer airport than Frankfurt. I hope you enjoyed my trip so far. Sorry for not having pics of the Turkish flight, my battery died on my camera. Too bad because the male flight attendant was VERY VERY hot!!!! We'll see how the return goes. Happy landings!

I bet your DEN takeoff was really long!! Typical United, and I've never flown Lufthansa, although I haven't heard too many bad things about them. Glad you had good flights!
Right now there is an AA MD-80 flying over my house.

LOL, it's funny, I am planning a trip to IST and everytime I come into the trip report's forums I always find something about IST, I guess it's a signal and I have to go.
Cool report anyways, glad you enjoyed LH, they are a nice airline to fly on, nothing fancy just no nonsense service, very German, I love it.

Thanks for a nice report. I had my first 346 flight recently, and loved it, alltho it was with QR.
FRA is a nice place for spotting but as you said not good for a long layover.
Hope you charge you batteries for a return report
Thanks for posting

Your aircraft is so brand new, It is not even christened with a name yet . Not sure if all LH aircraft have names. The ones I flew on were Reimshchied, Niedersachsen, Sachsen and Koblenz! (The latter three are actual 1:200 scale models that I own)
Did you find the legroom comfy on the A346. It seems very cramped.

Night before...! I do envy those of you who can fly off to another continent on a whim. (Actually, I could at the moment, but no way am I spending the money....)
Anyway, very nice job; as I established in your other thread, I really like the A340, any version. Also, it's very nice that LH serves two full meals in Y on a transatlantic flight, though the presentation of the Y meals is not as appetizing as it is on AF or maybe even BA (but much more appealing than KL).
IST is great, it has been ten years since I have been there now (!), I will have to get back there sometime....

LH looks pretty good, and hey, you have been very lucky to catch LH's IFE too. I think this would be one of the only few longhaul aircraft with IFE in LH's fleet at the moment.
DEN looks great, and what a scenery in the background. Love it!
And those A340-600's; very beautiful birds. Flew it twice, both on VS. They have a terrific IFE too, V.port if I remember correctly. And the bar, I think that isn't featured on LH...

Eric

Actually all the A333, A346 and all but two A343 have PTV now.

Some additional photos from on the way back. I'm sort of tired to do another trip report, but I really did enjoy Turkey and especially IST Ataturk. Fabulous airport, with a lot of carriers from the middle east, especially smaller carriers you rarely see. And I got to see some Russian jets as well! A first for me. They are LOUD! The scenery taking off is beautiful and we had an uneventful flight to a snowy MUC. Dare I say that MUC is one of the best airports in Europe? Just perfect!
I will say that I was frisked no less than 6 times. 3 times at MUC. They have quarantined the US bound flights at each end of the terminal it seemed that day and it goes into a "super-sterile" area for departure.
Had a major problem with LH which you can read here:

To start off with, incredible photos !
I may have been in DEN at the same time last week ( connected on 1/7 and 1/10 ). Was the weather not ridiculously cold ? Just wanted to catch your impression of the UA staff in DEN.
My thoughts are that they have all been friendly and outgoing ( especially in the Red Carpet Club ), but just wanted to confirm w/ your thoughts.

You being from Canada, if you were headed to FRA would you recommend the A346 on LH or to go through Montreal on an AC A333? Not sure if you've flown transatlantic on AC before or not. I'm flying to FRA in March and I can't tell from reports and pics which will be the more comfortable flight/seat. I'm 6'4 and need as much room as possible. Also, which airline has the best "extras" between those two - food, IFE, etc. I like that type of stuff.
Could you or someone lend me a little advice? Thanks a bunch.

The seats are really narrow. More so than any other widebody I've been on. I don't know the dimensions, so I may be completely off, but it wasn't as roomy. I mean, it's a great and beautiful aircraft, but you can definitely tell it's smaller inside than a 777.
Quoting TurkishWings (Reply 6): On top of that, I thought the seats were extremely hard too on my recent LH flights... I know the question is not aimed at me
The seats were very hard. They were form fitting, but hard.

The A330's have them as well. Though, the IFE isn't as good as say CO in economy. The moving map reminds me of AA's old style moving maps, and the moving maps we've had since the 90's. The screens were nice a big though, and it was AVOD.

Just wanted to catch your impression of the UA staff in DEN. I was there on the 8th. Didn't deal much with the UA staff as I headed directly to my gate. UA staff are pretty standard though. But the Red Carpet lounges customer service is always nice. The best one for service I think is at NRT in my experience. They use the Royal Silk Lounge in BKK.

That I don't know, but the A330's and A340's of LH are fairly tight.

BTW...Your home airport, OKC, has some of my favorite shops/restaurants of any airport.
The idea of a Sonic in the airport is a great one. I also never fail to pick up a t-shirt from the Big 12 Shop.
Any new happenings @ OKC in the past couple of years, since I was last there ?

Well, lots of new nonstop flights. United added IAD and LAX nonstop. F9 added some nonstop florida flights, one being MCO. We are seeing more mainline flights, and of course AA still has their 4,000,000 MD-80 flights a day to DFW.
I believe the airport got approval for funds to start work on the east concourse, which will effectively double the size of the airport. (Though, JetMatt777 really knows more info about all of this, he's the local OKC expert).
Sonic at the airport only seems natural to me though. I really didn't give it a thought since it's an OKC based company.
As far as the area, the new Devon Tower is going in. Going to be one of the tallest buildings in the US and dwarf the current OKC skyline. The MAPS 3 project got approved and downtown is just booming with new construction and renovations. OKC is working on becoming a world class small city. I'm sort of wondering if any LCC might consider it in the future as a small focus hub.

East Concourse has been approved to be drawn on paper -- that is about all. After the Phase III concept (East Concourse) has been presented to the OCAT (Oklahoma City Airport Trust), and is approved by them, OCAT will receive bids and begin funding. After the bids are drawn and the contractors are selected, some work will be done. The Phase III concept has yet to be presented to the trust, and there is no rush at the moment with the way the economy is going. I expect the concept to be presented and approved early this year, though they may stop there and wait until some better rebounding occurs before they ask for bids.
Moe's Southwest Grill also now has a tenant lease inside the main terminal, next to Sonic.
A Rental Car facility is proposed for N.W. 54th and Meridian, just about a mile north of the terminal and under the approach to 17R. This will allow for more Rental Car spots, freeing of space to relocate the Employee Parking Lot to where the current Rental Car facilities are, which in turn will allow Belly Cargo to move north and parallel the future east concourse, which the belly cargo move will make way for.
I made this map:

Give it time. I'd say in the long term we have a great chance at this, short term -- we just can't fill the seats right now. OKC has momentum, jobs, and energy. (metaphorically and literally) Not many other cities can say the same.
Good report, I enjoyed reading it. I was spotting at OKC the same day, although a few hours after you departed.

Gentlemen-
Incredible stuff on a world-class airport. I am from SGF and grew up in ICT, so I am well familiar with OKC. It's amazing, the plethora of information given in response to one question.
Back when I could afford the weight gain, a package of mozzarella sticks from Sonic before a flight was quite the tasty treat.
The East Concourse plans seem exciting, and I would love to see someone come in ( or expand ) and use every last new gate.
At risk of being off topic, check out ICT's plans if you will. It will finally be the airport that city deserves to have.
