Before I start I apologise for the poor quality and quantity of pictures. On IAH - DOH; we are asked to keep away all major electronic devices in our check-in and photography was strictly prohibited. But I still managed to sneak in few pictures. I was honestly not in a mind to write a TR for this trip due to lack of quality pictures, but given that
QR's IAH - DOH has not been reviewed so far on A.net, I thought I might gather the pieces and put something up. You can see in my past TRs that I have covered the JFK, IAD flights and now I'll be covering IAH.

After one year it was time to go to my home(s). Due to my residences in Qatar and India, it was obvious I will be flying QR out of the USA. I was at DFW and had to fly to BOM via DOH through either IAD, JFK, IAH. Since I had not flown the B772LR, I decided to fly out of IAH which meant that I pay an extra $110 for the ticket. Also my stay In Doha after one week as more or less decided as to which aircraft to choose to fly between DOH and BOM. From July 2009, QR has been operating A333/B77W/A346 alternatibely through the week. A quick check of aircrafts from 10th January onwards put me in a dilemma, whether to fly the A346 on 12th OR the A333 on the 13th as I had not done both. But given I was flying J on DOH - BOM I thought the A346 would be a better option. So here was the final schedule.

AA 1630 DFW - IAH 29th Dec 1240 1355 MD83
QR 078 IAH - DOH 29th Dec 1945 1940+1 B77L
QR 200 DOH - BOM 12th Jan 2145 0340+1 A346

Background:-

QR started DOH - IAH non stop at the onset of summer 2009 as daily non stop flights. This is their longest route in the network and with competitve pricing and marketing they have a good market share out IAH to the Indian subcontinent. Having tried IAD - DOH, JFK - DOH it was now time for IAH - DOH to complete the triology. I was eager to find out whether QR can maintain the good service standards that they boast of. I particularly don't find their service 5 star per se, but I find it good enough for a 4 or 4.5 stars.

First leg of the journey: Houston, George Bush Intercontinental Airport - Doha International Airport
Flight no: QR 078

Aircraft type: B777-200LR

Terminal View and Check-in:-

Qatar Airways operates from Terminal D at IAH, the check-in area at the left end of the terminal is used by LH, SQ, EK, QR. The first impressions of the terminal were not at all good and it looked kind of outdated, dull and boring. Airports like DFW, MCO are much better places when compared to IAH.

Just as I stepped in the airport SQ had almost finished checking-in all its passengers and EK had started theirs. As and when SQ finished QR stepped in and opened their check-in desks. With just EK and QR the entire left side of the terminal was packed and at one point were merged with the BA check-in line towards the right portion of the temrinal. Now I was lucky enough to find out that Web check-in passengers and people connecting from elsewhere through IAH had a separate counter. I just walked in and collected my boarding pass as I had my bags checked-in at DFW all the way to DOH.

A quick check of ID and the lady issued my boarding pass which said seat 32A. I was pretty disappointed and told her I had reserved seat 22K formyself an exit row seat, the system did not honour my request? She was apologetic about it and was seeing what could be done. She just had a quick chat with the station manager and asked me to proceed through security, the seat assignment issue will be resolved while boarding.

Now while moving aroubnd there was a TSA announcement that was unusual and I found it quite funny." .. Any passengers passing inappropriate comments or cracking jokes about the TSA will be suject to arrest". I almost fell down laughing. Of all the airports I visited in the
USA it was the first time at IAH where I heard such a funny warning issued.

As I was watching the EK, QR passengers check-in barring 10-15 passengers each flight all were headed to the Indian subcontinent. It was a "desi mela" at IAH airport. I saw quite a few cancellations from Europe LH, one of the 2 BA flights and one more flight which was either KL or AF. Bad weather I believe.

With the heightened security alert after the NW aircraft fiasco on Christmas, it was best not to venture into anything risky and hence I did not take many pictures from my cell phone camera. Just enough to mark my presence on the trip :P. Passed through the security which was almost as normal as earlier no added measures. Taking the escalator to the duty free and gates, my disappointment was maintained with just basic facilities available.

There was just this one restaurant available where there was food available at reasonable prices. While having my sandwich I noticed EK 212 ready for its departure to DXB; I believe this is the longest non stop flight out of IAH. Chatting and saying mnay good byes on the phone took an hours time away and our flight QR 078 was almost ready for boarding. While I was sitting in the waiting area the QR crew were getting their flight briefing from the CS/CSD. Maybe they were mentally preparing themselves for a packed flight and almost everyone headed to the Indian subcontinent; including me albeit after a few days. And as usual, I saw some kids and ... already hallucinating the loud shrieks inflight. God bless me ! ( And those of you who want to be politicially correct, let me remind you that such a situation for 14.5 hrs is not something anyone is looking forward to)

Boarding & Flight Details:-

Flight No: QR 078

Gate No: D4
Seat No: 22A

Departure times:-

STD: 1945 hrs
Pushback: 1953 hrs
Airborne: 2005 hrs
Runway: 30
Flying Time: 14 hours 17 mins

Load: J: 42/42; Y: 217/217

Boarding through D4, was done in a systematic fashion. Elderly passengers, people with kids and special needs were allowed to board first. Now getting back to my seat assignment, I hope something would be done so as to restore my bulk head seat request. And yes .. it was done the gate agent struck off the 32A and I was assigned 22A. I was believed and finally went into the crystal maze ... yes the jet bridges at IAH are pretty confusing and there is every probability that you go into the neighboring flight. But before our imaginations run wild the men in blue were here to hush us to the appropriate one.

Inflight:-

Stepped into the B777-200LR .... after one year I was flying an airline which is going to serve me food and drinks for free, FAs who would look like FAs, and other than duty free I wouldn't be paying for anything. The logo in front showing QATAR brought me few hundred miles closer to the destination. A very warm welcome by the two ladies at the door gave an impression I was going to have a pleasant journey. I walked down the aisle and saw my seat
22A occupied by a kid who was along with her family. The FA was quick to respond to the confusion and while the little girl shifted places I visited the washroom at the rear end of the aircraft.

Returning to the seat, it was vacated for me and the little girl was next me and her father besides her. I settled at 22A, a bulkhead seat with my blanket, headphones kept on the seat. The blanket was of better quality than before and the amenity kit consisted of eye shades, ear plugs and socks. In the mean time the little girl next to me was giving me an unforgiving look. I believe I had confiscated her seat and the woulnds were still raw. I gave her a smile and did not bother looking at her. Her father and me talked for a while and I learnt that they were passengers on a cancelled AF flight. They were flying to DEL and it was their first time on any Middle eastern carrier. The family was Indian - American and had all sort of apprehensions whether Osama bin laden and his comrades hold a FF card on all Middle eastern carriers and all those doubts. Having cleared those doubts they were relaxed. They said the initial impressions were good and the FAs aren't horrible like AF ( at the end of the flight he was a EK/QR convert), and when I told him QR flies to ATQ he was probably going to re book his reurn leg from there. Sweets and cold freshners were distributed.

At 1940, announcements were made for departure, cross check. The flight was packed, sealed and off we were to DOH. Pushback at 1953 hrs and after some 10 mins of taxiing we lined up for take off. The B777LR engines roared into the skies and after 3 hours or so we should be out of the American airspace. Now thanks to the Nigerian jerk, the moving maps wee switched off throughout the flight. And trust me that is an important part of IFE for me. However on the top right of the screen, there were flight details " QR 078; flight time elapsed and time left to destiantion". Which at least gave an idea as to where we might be. The Captain warned us that at 2 places we would be expecting some turbulence over the Atlantic. As we levelled off, the menu cards were distributed and here is where the disappointment begun. Was I reading it right? Were there only 2 main course options?

Drinks service commenced, had bourborn and coke and some cheese crackers along with that. The FAs came to top off the drinks once and we entered the turbulent area. It was a little scary as the B777 was shaking a lot. After the aircraft became stable, hot towels
were handed out and the dinner service begun. Here is the menu:

http://i330.photobucket.com/albums/l433/ojas123/Image042-2.jpg?t=1264364177

The mid flight snacks in the galley consisted of mini subs, oreo cookies and drinks; the mini subs were nicely done and I had 4 of them during the meal intervals.

Disappointments:-

#1: The presentation: I know airlines are in a cost cutting mode, but meals on a transpaernt plastic trays that you get at some Indian grocery store. It was totally apalling and unacceptable.

#2: The quantity: The quantity of the main casserole shrunk, however one more side dish was added as starters. The taste of the food was good including the dessert.

#3: The options: This is my 4th US - DOH sector, and on the first 3 I had 3 options to choose from, this time it was just 2. Another rip off...

If these were the places they were cutting costs, they were using a good quality paper mat on which meals were served which served no purpose at all. I mean cutting costs on presentation and then using expensive papers for table mats is the most ridiculous thing I have seen recently. An airline touting its supposed 5 star status cannot get away with such a presentation of food. But thankfully the quality had not gone down.

Crew:-

The crew amidst all this were at their. A full flight with demanding passengers is not an easy task, but everyone was doing well except for one American FA. She was kind of pissed off the moment we stepped in and she just did not want to see any electronic stuff in anyones hands. The rest of the bunch were charming and I chatted with them for along through the flight. Their origins varied from Thailand, India, Pakistan, Philippines and one USA.

IFE:-

Now here is what, the little girl next to me really was unable to find the screen (given it was a bulk head seat). When I got it out for her she actually thought I was one of the members of the "Incredibles" and that I magically got it out of her seat. The look in her eyes showed it all. Later the ice broke between us and I was just wondering how complicated a life of a 7 year old can be?? I would like to list out few things

* Parents not allowing her to watch 'True Jackson VP'.
* Restriction on consumption of "Hot cheetos" by certain adult members of the family who many of us call Mom
* An out-of-the-world homework by Mrs Asith and her ways to torture kids
* Lack of Christmas gifts .. she just got 6
* Not allowed to play after 7 pm

The list was too long. While we were discussing her complicated life the FA came over and offered her ice cream .... tears of joy ran down her cheeks. Within few minutes she had scooped off the entire Ben and Jerry's chocolate ice cream. Taking advantage of her asleep parents I asked another ice cream for the kid and the request was fulfilled immediately. She asked me " other planes don't give ice creams..this is soo good". The good thing was that this girl was very well behaved and not once was she cranky throughout the flight. She was now a proud owner of a kiddie bag and was displaying all the contents for me and was planning as to what she will do with all those crayons and drawing books. It was 4 hours into the flight and I dozed off while watching an episode of Simpsons.

Seat:-

The seats of QR's B777 are really comfortable with good legroom and a decent recline. You have all the facilities like the USB port, power port for Ipods, Laptops. Aircraft was equipped with mood lighting as most of the new generation long haul planes are.

My sleep lasted for a few hours and once I woke up I freshened up and had a cup of coffee and stood in the galley. I talked to the FAs etc etc QR, movies, Doha a boring place, no nightlife so on and so forth. Given the just recent press release of the annoucnement of CPH and BCN, I updated them with this information. Two of the FAs Mr. F and Ms. R and me had some common friends in Doha and we met on the 31st dec at the friends place.

Here are some pictures of a similar trip last year from IAD to DOH the service was identical.

From the passenger point of view there is practically no difference between the B77W and B77L except that the B77W has more Y seats.

Remainder of the flight was uneventful, juices, water coming, snacks, coffee, soda was exercising my mouth with all of this. The young lady besides me retired and she slept for the remaining flight. Finally we had 1.5 hours to go and breakfast service commenced. Hot towels given first, and then the poorly presented breakfast. Here is what was on offer:

http://i330.photobucket.com/albums/l433/ojas123/Picture044.jpg?t=1264363060

I chose cheddar cheese omlette, which was tasty and the sausage too was nice. Here too the quality was good, however the presentation was as poor as the dinner. After gobbling up the breakfast, I settled down for a cup of coffee. As the tables were cleared, FINALLY the descend started and all got ready for arrival into Doha with the lights seen on the ground we aligned from the west bay and landed on RWY 16 of the airport

Arrivals:-

Scheduled: 1940 hrs.
Touchdown: 1922 hrs.
Docking Time: 1930 hrs.
Runway: 16

It was a smooth landing and we parked at our bay at 1930 hrs. Apart from a sole Air Arabia A320 there was not a single foreign airline visible at Doha. As you know the arrival bank at Doha starts at 1830 and was expecting a crowd at the airport.

We were bussed to the terminal and OMG the lines were getting longer by the minute till the entrance of the terminal. The transit passengers lines was packed, thankfully I was heading towards to the immigration. It took around 15 minutes to clear immigration, another 10 minutes for my luggage to come and was out at 2000 hrs.

Ratings:-

A/C : 10/10
Crew: 8/10
Food: 8/10
IFE: 9/10
Boarding & ground Formalities: 8/10
Overall: 8.6/10

Background:-

My stay in doha was over, 2 weeks flew by and on the 12th of Jan I was scheduled to fly to Mumbai. Qatar Airways as of today have very few competitors on the routes they operate and oneof them is Mumbai. With the entry of Air India Express, the LCC into DOH, QR and others finally had to drop downt their ridiculuos fares offered. Once 9W came in the competition increased and QR is now by and large banking on a lot of connecting traffic to Mumbai. Today it operates anything out of an A330, A340-600 and B777-300ER to BOM.

Terminal View & Check - in:-

This time I was flying business class, so it entailed a check - in at the premium temrinal and the use of its facilities. My father in particular likes the premium temrinal purely for the reason that the parking is right infront of the entrance. As soon as we arrvied at the entrance, a porter and a QR agent welcomed me

" Good evening Sir, where are you flying today?"
"Mumbai"
" Please follow me to the check-in"

The porter took my luggage and we were off to the check-in desk. My parents too came in and they were seated besides me. The check-in agent issued my boarding pass in a few minutes and wished me a pleasant flight. Business class and First class had separate counters but nothing different specifically. Here are some pictures:

After a few pictures, it as good bye to Mom and Dad and I headed towards the immigration. No queue at all, so immigration and security check were over within minutes. Now it was time to explore the much talked about premium terminal. Calm, quiet and peaceful. As went above, another agent cross checked my boarding pass and guided me to the lounge. The lounge was a perfect place to be on a nice cold evening. There were 3-4 different places for dinner and drinks so that once place isn't crowded. The lounge was sparsely occupied and the lounge attendant escrted me to my seat. After that I just indulged myself in trying different wines and the food. Let the pictures speak.

Towards the restroom

In the meantime I made a trip outside downstairs and piucked up few duty free items and returned to the lounge. Now here is something interesting the lounge attendant told me. Many passengers embarking from Doha prefer to fly through the main terminal than the premium temrinal just because the duty free there has good collection of alcohol. This was somehting I was unaware, but its possible they might be using the Silver/Gold lounge
down in that terminal.

At 2110 hrs the lounge attendant requested me to proceed ot board the flight. After having a pleasant time in the lounge I was off to board my flight. I took the escalator downstairs and enroute the agents wished me a pleasant flight. At the boarding gate I learnt I was the last person to board. I entered the bus and thankfully these buses have place to sit for evreyone, unlike the ones for Y class. We were just 7 people in J on our flight to BOM.

The sight of the A340-600 excited me, it was my first time on an A340-600 and after a long time I was going to fly an A340. The last one being on an EY A340-500 on AUH - BOM route. On entry we were greeted by two FAs Ms K and Ms T and escorted to our seats. Boarding 7 people in J was a quick affair. While we waited for our Y counterparts to board, the quick drill of a welcome drink, hot towel distribution newspapers and headset distribution was completed. Orange Juice, Laban and Sparkling water were on offer.

Now, I'm not an elaborate J class flyer so I particularly don't know whether to expect an amenity kit on a flight less than 3 hours. The doors closed and we were ready for departure. Our orders for our drinks post take off were taken. I opted for the champagne cocktail. the menu cards were handed out as well.

We lined up for take off and man that was the smoothest take off in recent times, so quiet and a nice lift into the sky. At this point I must say I took a solemn pledge that I will fly Airbus as a passenger as much as I can.

After we levelled off, the drinks were served. Champagne cocktail and some warm nuts. Within few seconds, orders for appetizers and dinner were taken. Here is the menu:

It was prawn curry and rice without a doubt and I had a Chicken pakora for starters ( Pakoras are created by taking one or two ingredients, such as chicken, onion, eggplant, potato, spinach, cauliflower, tomato or chilli, dipping them in a batter of gram flour and then deep-frying them). I ran out of battery at this point hence missed the pictures of the food. While the order was taken, more drinks were served. After few minutes passed by two FAs came and began setting my table for dinner.Thankfully on this sector there were 3 choices in both J and Y as I confirmed with the CSD Ms. K. So the supposedly premium route IAH - DOH had 2 meal choices and DOH - BOM had 3. Good it seems they started liking Indian sub continent passengers :P

Dinner was delicious I could have had more. The presentation was good. After the tables were cleared dessert was served, it was a Gulab Jamun with some fruit mix or something like that which I particularly did not like. Not that the stuff was bad, but I do not like Gulab Jamuns that much. Chocolates handed out and the entire drill took not more than 1 hour 15 mins and the lights were dimmed so that the passengers could get some sleep. I really think the CSD did a good job in offering a quick meal service without making it look rushed. I visited the loo and here is an airbus loo with a window. I peeped into the economy section and found out that most of the people were asleep. Some more pictures:-

You all must have noticed the absence of the lounge on QR's A346. Apparently all their 4 A346 have been refurbished. The on board lounge has been removed to accommodate 50 Y seats, thus increasing the capacity of this aircraft from 266 to 306.

Seat:-

I returned to the seat and playing around with the various "positions" of this seat. The J seat on an A340-600 becomes into a bed at an angle of 165 degrees; Not a complete 180 degree flat bed. Yet it is comfortable and I believe everyone can have a good sleep on it.

IFE:-

The same Oryx Multiplex, different slection of movies but same style as the ones available on the B777.

Crew:-

Another equally impressive crew, with the CSD being the star of the evening. Quick service not seeming to rush and passengers got an hour of sleep.

One of the smoothese landings in recent times, it was smooth as silk. 2 AI B77Ws and 1 9W B77W were holding for take off. We exited the runway and we were backtracking to the international terminal at BOM. We had to hold for 10 mins till the BA B744 vacated the gate for us. We docked to the new satellite terminal, an extension to the temrinal 2C. J passengers allowed to go out first and the rest followed. Here are some pictures:

The Swine flu photoshoot was still going on, and a few kids mistook it for a camera and gave few poses infront if it only to be shooed by theiur parents to hurry up and get out of the airport. Immigration for F, J passengers was separate. A staff member checked our boarding pass and withina minute our passsports were stamped. Luggage was out already, pushed it through the X -ray screening at the customs. With a lifetime record of 8 minutes I was out of the airport. Never in my life time I had imagined this would be true.

Conclusion:-

Overall I enjoyed my trip and I would say even with the peak travel season, it did not seem chaotic at any point. As I pointed out the presentation of catrering on my IAH - DOH flight was awful and it was a let down. Is QR a 5 star airline? No. Does it have the potential to be? Yes. The crew on all my QR flights by far have been good with just a couple of exceptions who were average. But didn't experience Etihad - ish rude FAs on any sector.

I hope you enjoyed my TR, once again apologising for the poor quality of pictures.

Hi Ojas!

Excellent report and pictures are very nice also!

Interesting that QR (and EK too) cater so much to Indians when it comes to meal selection. Too bad you had less choice on IAH-DOH than on DOH-BOM.

I have flown QR a few times and I also had great service on my flights. In general, I think QR is better than EK although my last EK flight DXB-LAX was very good.

Ojas as usual I loved your Trip Reports and I was immediatly delighted when I saw that you have created a new one! I couldnt wait for the TR pics to load. Your pics were more than fine; they are perfect for a trip report!

Interesting that IAH is doing quite good in terms of passenger movement. Just one thing though, how come your flight from DOH-BOM is on J and IAH-DOH on Y? Did you book it as two tickets?

The A346 J class looks denser with the removal of the lounge, and its still comfortable. I wonder if there is a way to make those seats fully-flat without changing them?

I was dying to see a picture of the J cabin after removal of the lounge, and you made my wish true. I wonder how Premium loads to BOM is doing, as you wrote there are 7 J seats taken in your flight?

The EK pic you posted in IAH seems to be 77W, is it indeed a 77W or 77L?

It probably all depends on the sector and which class one is flying. I would definitely love to fly EK on routes where they either use the A340 or A380. The B777s and the A330s are a big turn off in Y class, which unfortunately covers almost 95% of their network.

I was thinking of that too ... removal of lounge and probably tweaking those seats to a flat bed would have been an excellent idea. But then there probably had to be more distinguishing features between their F and J.

No it's a B77L. It was A6 - EWF or A6 - EWB one of them as through those windows I could not make out the difference of F and a B.

Flew on QR RUH-DOH-IAD-DOH-RUH last year in J and really enjoyed flying with them. Will not do it again as i did have to sleep overnight both ways, and QR will not pay for hotel. Also on the return trip IAD-DOH the flight was delayed for more than 4 hours the ground crew did not do a good job dealing with that delay.

A good read there with trust QR. Great to see standards are being maintained. How exciting walking through the usual US airport, but knowing 14 hours of full-service luxury lie ahead. Incidently is the routing of this flight quite far north ( i.e up towards the Arctic circle?)
Nice too that you had a weeks rest before continueing to BOM...

Hi Ojas,

I have been waiting for this report! Despite the rather disappointing Y meal from IAH, it seems that QR still manages to maintain their service.

I mostly like your J experience. It brings back all the memories again. I have never experienced the Premium Terminal landside. You have done a great job on capturing it! A346 is a great airliner to fly with. I cannot wait until the summer when it will be my turn to fly QR again, even though A346 isn't on the schedule!

Quoting Ojas (Thread starter):
Taking advantage of her asleep parents I asked another ice cream for the kid and the request was fulfilled immediately. She asked me " other planes don't give ice creams..this is soo good". The good thing was that this girl was very well behaved and not once was she cranky throughout the flight. She was now a proud owner of a kiddie bag and was displaying all the contents for me and was planning as to what she will do with all those crayons and drawing books. It was 4 hours into the flight and I dozed off while watching an episode of Simpsons.

This one just makes me melt. Sooo cute!

Great report and thank you so much for sharing!

Cheers,
Suryo

PS. Is it just me or has QR redesigned the interior of the Premium Terminal?

Great report Ojas!

Quoting Ojas (Thread starter):
The first impressions of the terminal were not at all good and it looked kind of outdated, dull and boring. Airports like DFW, MCO are much better places when compared to IAH.

IAH much like DFW and MCO has certain area's that are good and bad. Terminal E at IAH is pretty decent and very comparable to DFW's new Terminal D and MCO's Delta concourse. However none of those are anywhere near as good as Detroit's McNamera terminal.

Quoting Ojas (Thread starter):
And as usual, I saw some kids and ... already hallucinating the loud shrieks inflight.

Its probably time to invest in some BOSE noise canceling headsets! rust me, they are so worth the investment.

Her father and me talked for a while and I learnt that they were passengers on a cancelled AF flight.

I have a question. You took a picture of a AF 777 in IAH. Was the flight canceled out of IAH only?

Quoting Ojas (Reply 1):
We were just 7 people in J on our flight to BOM.

Thats quite a change from when I flew them out of BOM in 2008. I still remember them asking me at check in if I would not mind flying coach on a paid J ticket.

Quoting Ojas (Reply 1):
Now, I'm not an elaborate J class flyer so I particularly don't know whether to expect an amenity kit on a flight less than 3 hours.

In my experience its common to hand out amenity kits for such short flights, at least not in years.

Quoting Ojas (Reply 1):
So the supposedly premium route IAH - DOH had 2 meal choices and DOH - BOM had 3. Good it seems they started liking Indian sub continent passengers

You can't compare J to Y. J always has more choice, just look at my Qatar trip report for comparison.

Quoting Ojas (Reply 1):

From my experience EK was a mixed bunch, some of them really good and some of them average to bad.

But nothing beats Etihad. Flew 12 sectors, with them and the crew were consistently bad. The classic case was when one of the FA literally snatched my meal tray when i had not even finished it. Also it was not the case we had started our descent. As I was having my dessert, I just halted for 2 seconds to switch the channel on the IFE and in that time swoosh ... meal tray vanished. Upon confronting the FA she was trying to convince me that she was right and I was wrong. And such attitude of the FAs was consistent ... Out of 12 I had 8 sectors where I had something or the other to complain. The reason I flew them was because they had the cheapest fare available.

Quoting Ojas (Thread starter):
we are asked to keep away all major electronic devices in our check-in and photography was strictly prohibited.

Is that due to the hightened security measures?
How strictly enforced was this? ..

Quoting Ojas (Thread starter):
Airports like DFW, MCO are much better places when compared to IAH.

MCO is the best!

DFW is good too, especially back in the day when JAL and Sabena joined the usual LH/KL/BA lineup at the International Terminal.

Quoting Ojas (Thread starter):
And yes .. it was done the gate agent struck off the 32A and I was assigned 22A.

Great that they kept to their promise!
With many other airlines, this would have easily been long forgotten at the gate

Quoting Ojas (Thread starter):
The family was Indian - American and had all sort of apprehensions whether Osama bin laden and his comrades hold a FF card on all Middle eastern carriers and all those doubts.

Hahah .. Why am i not surprised?

Quoting Ojas (Thread starter):
Were there only 2 main course options?

I had a similar experience on EK to YYZ in October. The moment i reached back home in the UAE, i cross-checked with an older JFK menu and yes indeed, the choices were down to 2 now.

Quoting Ojas (Thread starter):
#1: The presentation: I know airlines are in a cost cutting mode, but meals on a transpaernt plastic trays that you get at some Indian grocery store. It was totally apalling and unacceptable.

I heard that the airline plans to introduce a tray-less meal service in Y class, with table linens etc. Is this true?

Quoting Ojas (Thread starter):
the premium temrinal

Looks nice!

Quoting Ojas (Thread starter):
Orange Juice, Laban and Sparkling water were on offer.

Laban! Now THAT is unique! ... That would have been my choice too!

Quoting Ojas (Thread starter):
UL operates a triangular flight, CMB-DOH-MCT-CMB

Good ol UL and the abundance of the great triangulars in their network

Quoting Ojas (Thread starter):
But didn't experience Etihad - ish rude FAs on any sector.

At least update your opinion and fly them again   hehe

Quoting The777Man (Reply 4):
Interesting that QR (and EK too) cater so much to Indians when it comes to meal selection. Too bad you had less choice on IAH-DOH than on DOH-BOM.

The moment 9W began its Mid-East expansion, the Gulf Carriers took this very seriously and conducted a thorough review of their in-flight service to the Indian Subcontinent. This market is what these airlines practically live on, and for a long time, they were taking this for granted.

But apparently now, you are supposed to experience revamped service even in Y on these sectors.

Thanks a lot for sharing this great TR Ojas! .. Hope to see more from you soon!

Roni

Good report Ojas, nice that you finally had your 340-600

Thanks, next on my cards is an A380 and A333.

This dude looks like Montgomery Burns from Simpsons

LOL

Quoting Ronerone (Reply 20):
Great work, and as mentioned above, your commentary more than made up for any lack of pictures throughout!

Thanks a lot!

Quoting Ronerone (Reply 20):

Yes it was due to heightened security measures, I think everyone obeyed the TSA at the check-in. The TSA agents went around shouting that no electronics in hand baggage.

Quoting Ronerone (Reply 20):
MCO is the best!

Amen!

Sad to see that, EK as well as QR.

Quoting Ronerone (Reply 20):
I heard that the airline plans to introduce a tray-less meal service in Y class, with table linens etc.

Is it? why not just instruct passengers to get their own plates, trays spoons, napkins etc. Silly.

Quoting Ronerone (Reply 20):

Thank God, Given you don't like hamour I was actually wondering whether you actually like the staple drink of the Gulf : Laban. It's awesome!!!!

Ok here is the deal. I will fly them. But if they are anything short of "good", "above average" ... I will go on a peaceful demonstration in India against the UAE, ask for the resignation of the Prime Minister, etc etc etc ( Normally what opposition parties in a democracy do to attract attention)  wink .

But then I will try them sooner.

No wonder, thanks to 9W for that. I flew them on BOM - DOH once and they were really good!

This has SQ written all over it   ... hmm but not to the US if so

The A333 is replacing that nasty 772 on the AUH route this summer!

LOL. Apparently, its an effort to make the service in Y J-like. All the meal-wares are supposed to look very stylish, but they will all be disposable. So once you're done eating, everything will be thrown away!

Who knows if this is true or not. Let's see!

Quoting Ojas (Reply 21):

I love Laban! and i love plain yoghurt with almost anything!

Can't wait to fly 9W soon!

Nice to a trip report again by you on QR!

Quoting Ojas (Thread starter):
A full flight with demanding passengers is not an easy task, but everyone was doing well except for one American FA. She was kind of pissed off the moment we stepped in and she just did not want to see any electronic stuff in anyones hands.

So these FAs also exist on QR....hmmmm!!

Quoting Ojas (Thread starter):
The sight of the A340-600 excited me, it was my first time on an A340-600 and after a long time I was going to fly an A340

You are so lucky to have flown on the A340-600. I'm waiting to fly one someday, so I can only imagine how you felt being on this aircraft.

Hi Ojas,

interesting report, always nice to read about QR.

Now thanks to the Nigerian jerk, the moving maps wee switched off throughout the flight.

I'm wondering why the map wasn't switched on later.

#2: The quantity: The quantity of the main casserole shrunk, however one more side dish was added as starters. The taste of the food was good including the dessert.

Bad to hear. I can only hope EK will keep its catering quality level.
