This is certainly different from the standard trip report here. Well, it was a trip and this is a report, which I had posted on my favourite German forum but I thought it’s maybe worth to share the pictures with my a.net fellows. However, should you consider this as inappropriate please propose for deletion.

I used the opportunity of a business trip to Romania with CSA, routing HAJ-PRG-OTP vv (this is all I can tell you about HAJ and PRG, they are soo boring), to visit some airports and airfields in Walachia:

1.) Unfinished Rombac 1-11 near Chitila
I had seen the pictures of that unfinished Rombac 1-11 in our database so I decided to have a look. The Rombac 1-11 is stored near a solid waste landfill.

Did you notice the bird near the cockpit? Seems as if this bird wanted to make a joke and imitated the Khaliffa Airways colours

Initially, I wanted to go closer to the Rombac 1-11 but these boys here did not allow me to do so – here during their “friend enemy recognition”:

and now during attack – wave 1:

2.) Bucharest Baneasa (BBU)

After I had changed my underwear (   ) I drove to Bucharest Baneasa, as I knew from previous trips that there is a B 707 stored directly adjacent to a gas station.

When searching for a possibility to take some photos of the B 737-200 and B 727-100 stored behind Romaero’s hangars, I found another uncompleted Romanian aircraft, an IAR 93A.

And finally a good dog: a mad dog protecting the Mad Dog, chained to the nose gear and with dog house below the Mad Dog.

3.) Ticleni Aerodrom

Sunday early in the morning – nobody was there except one security guy. I kindly asked him and he allowed to go onto the airfield to take pictures of four Antonov 2:

and here the three of the above mentioned Antonovs stored in a row:

4.) Pitesti Aerodrom
Again early on a Sunday morning – I was able to drive directly onto the airfield and to take all photos from the car, something which I preferred due to the dogs (see above – it was everywhere the same…). I saw at least 7 An 2 and one An 2-wreckage.

5.) Airfield near Bals, Olt County

On the way to Craiova airport I passed a temporary air field near Bals. I suppose it was used to start spraying missions from there but right now it looks more like an An 2 –graveyard – kind of a Victorville for Antonov 2s.

6.) Craiova airport

On the tarmac of the Craiova airport there are dozens of jet fighters but I was not able to take some picture. About 1 km next to the runway there is an all-white DC 9 stored on the premises of Avioane Craiova. http://www.acv.ro/

http://www2.pic-upload.de/28.02.10/nxu4g9b98ak6.jpg

I have been told by a spotter from Frankfurt, that this is an ex Aviaco/Iberia DC-9-34CF, EC-CTU. It was ferried from Madrid to Craiova back in June 2005 as 9L-LFK (thanks fraaviation.de for this information).

7.) Craiova aerodrom
The same as before, just drive onto the airfield and don’t leave the car unless you see somebody who is working there:

http://www2.pic-upload.de/28.02.10/b6rsehs5nwe.jpg

There are three An 2s, YR-IVA just as an example:
http://www2.pic-upload.de/28.02.10/d81zczt93ny.jpg

and two wrackages, e.g. YR-PAS
http://www2.pic-upload.de/28.02.10/sf1zeaj2h457.jpg

So much for Walachia, it would have been easy to visit even more airfields. However, my next trip will be to Transilvania on the other side of the Carpatian mountains.

Those wild dogs are scary. Unbelievable. In Bulgaria a British woman was recently killed by wild dogs. I had chills down my spine looking at the pictures. Thanks.

N14AZ,

This is a really cool and unsual TR, I loved it!

It was great to see all those "sleeping beauties" although kind of sad, lots of them waiting to be scrapped ;(

The photos are great, and I enjoyed the little "Action" of your plane spotting adventure with those dogs attacking you

Thanks a lot for the report!

cheers from Paris,

orian

Hi,

Very interesting pictures from the aviation backroads of Romania. Lots of interesting metal mostly in very sad state.

Those dogs freak me out as well, they have actually put me off from planning any additional trips to Romania - I've been there two times and especially in Bucharest it was just horrible. Timisoara was a bit better. According to a Romanian colleague it should be much better nowadays than it used to be - I wonder how bad it was at its worst then...

Thanks for posting and don't be shy on these different reports, I'm sure many people here are just as interested as me.

Thanks a lot for this unusual report - I liked it a lot. Great pictures as well - you don't see this every day here.

Regards
Christoph

N14AZ,
A very different & interesting trip report! Thanks for posting it & if you have anymore please post them also!
I am thinking of a trip to Bucharest this summer so this report is very interesting for me. Bucharest Baneasa will be on my "to do" list, did you have any problems at BBU taking photo's or even at any of the airports/airfields?
The warning about the dogs & not leaving the car unless you see somebody who works there will come in very handy when I visit!
Once again thanks for a great report!

Dave(SAAB900).

Well, I can tell you, the dogs used to be everywhere, but now they do seem to have disappeared somewhat (from Bucharest). That said, at night, you can still hear them barking. Actually, in 2004 I believe, they were supposed to take them all to shelters and put most of them to sleep, humanely, but then some animal rights group intervened. The thing is... It's not like the action was something that didn't happen all around the world to some extent... So, there's still this dog issue.

In fact, just outside my grandmother's flat, I had a stray dog try to climb on my leg. At first I thought It had bitten me, but luckily it wasn't an aggressive specimen.

Anyway, these "boys" are part of why I'm a cat person.

Well, technically it's not allowed to take pictures at airports. Lots of people do, and OTP recently started giving authorizations for plane spotters, but... generally, it shouldn't be a problem if you're discreet about it. So be careful... For the smaller airfields, it shouldn't be a problem at all. Especially if there's no one there. And if there is, well, better hope he's in a good mood... Most security people at smaller airfields might not even have security attributions, they'll just claim they do. Try to talk to them first though, if they're there.

Alex,
Thanks for the info.
Once I've got my dates & flights sorted I will post on the Romanian Spotters Forum & try to get more info & possibly even meet up with some local spotters who I hope will be able to show me the spotting locations & help with the language etc!

Dave(SAAB900).
