INTRODUCTION
Dear fellow A.netters,
My partner was flying to Austria for a business trip in March. This would have not been anything special until I found out that he would fly back from Munich to Amsterdam with one of the recently acquired Lufthansa’s Embraer 195 jets! Oh my god, I was dying to be able to get onboard of those birds and my partner got booked with it just like that! So, I went all the way on the internet looking for the best possible price involving my partner’s return flight from MUC.
Unfortunately, I did not manage to find any suitable routing. I had even nearly got ripped off when I in my enthusiasm made a booking involving the LH Embraer flight and ended up paying for more than 500 Euro’s in Y! Luckily I still managed to cancel the whole booking without penalties. I could better have controlled myself!
Eventually I just had to make a kind of compromise. Perhaps by booking a cheaper option with arrival time in AMS around my partner’s. Then I came across a Vueling flight with arrival from Barcelona at exactly the same ETA.
But why Barcelona? Well, the Spanish delicacies I brought along from Madrid had ran out too soon and I regretted it. Therefore I just had to go back and return home with a more considerable amount. But somehow I was not to keen on flying back to MAD within such a short time. I searched beyond to other cities in Spain and came out with BCN. I have been there in 2004 for a long weekend trip.
Booking with Vueling has eventually turned out to be a wise decision. I will tell you more about that.
BOOKING
My first time flying Vueling had been almost three years ago. I still could remember how VY booking engine was ahead of the time, crisp and easy to navigate. Though the VY website features like flight changes, seat pre-assignment or invoice inquiry have become more and more common nowadays, there are some added features I had not yet experienced before.
For instance, I could book a so called XL seat online instead of buying at the airport ticket counter. These XL seats are really a necessity for tall people. I could recall my first VY flight to Valencia where I were unpleasantly squeezed in at a regular seat for more than two hours and at the end disembarking with stiff legs. The XL seats are available at an additional price of 13 Euro’s each leg and I must say, it was well worth it. A booking confirmation was delivered soon after my credit card was verified.
Even after three years, I still noticed the VY Customer Service has been equally reliable. Each inquiry of mine were responded and handled adequately at least on the following day. Good job, VY!
Check-in Online
One of the striking features was that I could subsequently check in online for both AMS-BCN and BCN-AMS upon the booking confirmation. I gratefully made a use of it and my boarding passes were issued immediately. Impressive!
Outbound and inbound boarding passes
Another feature was every time I consulted my booking, a confirmation would follow up even if not a single detail had been altered.
TRAVEL PLANNER
My trip to BCN would certainly be a nice opportunity to meet fellow A.netter Roger (aka Rogerbcn) and therefore I got in touch with him. I was pleased to hear that Roger would be happy to keep me a company. He then asked which places I might be interested to so that he could arrange a touristic route accordingly. How about that? I also told him about my plan to buy bocados. This word was supposed to express ‘delicacy’ in Spanish according to my Dutch-Spanish dictionary. I could see a smile at Roger’s face in my imagination as he replied that Spanish people do not use this expression. Darn, sometimes you just cannot simply rely on a translation! But since that, Roger referred every time to bocados. So I have decided to use the term further in this report.
Hotel L’Antic Espai Barcelona
Even I would be staying only for a single night in Barcelona, I wished to have a good night sleep. Therefore I consulted TripAdvisor for a suitable hotel and got attracted to Hostal L’Antic Espai.
When I checked directly with the hotel website, I found a discounted price at 52 Euro’s and immediately jumped at it. Their online booking engine was simply amazing. In the matter of seconds, I got the booking confirmation along with my user ID and password for my next visit.
After I told Roger where I would be staying, he went out to check the location by himself and told me that my hotel is well centrally located. He proposed a meeting at Casa Milà and afterwards going out shopping together. That was such a great idea and I agreed immediately. Before I knew, another exciting A.net meeting had been arranged!
CitizenM schiphol
The evening before departure, I had to attend a company farewell dining. As I would expect that this event would be running late, I decided to book a room with citizenM schiphol. I had got the best rate of all airport accessible hotels at 84 Euro’s. Considering Sheraton or Hilton nearby would have not charged less than 200 Euro’s, this citizenM was really a bargain.
The online booking was a swift and I could have my room and personal theme preset. It is very interesting, especially for the personal theme you will get a choice within the subthemes of temperature, color, sun screen position, music and language (no Dutch though!). The booking confirmation was delivered promptly to my mailbox. In the morning of my arrival day, I got a message on my mobile containing the reservation details in short. Impressive!
I got dropped off by my colleague at Schiphol and made my way to the hotel.
Schiphol by night
HOTEL CITIZENM SCHIPHOL AIRPORT
As far as I know, this is the first hotel who offers fully self-service check in facility to its guests. Just like at the airport’s self-service check in machine, there is an attendant (so called ambassador) around to help you out if needed. But it would not be that necessary as the touch screen would point your way out. A choice of two rooms would be offered. In my case, I could choose between a room on the first floor and a room on the fifth facing the apron. Not a difficult one!
Upon checking in, you just have to hold the key card in front of the scanner, a receipt would be printed out and you may proceed to your room. By the way, you may keep your key card for your next visit or just as a luggage tag. Unfortunately, I have lost mine somewhere at the airport.

After trying the rain shower, I prepared myself for the journey and made my way to the terminal building at half past eight. You could have your breakfast at the hotel, but I decided to take a pick out of the restaurants past security.

I was number seven in sequence. There were two desks being opened at that time. The line was moving pretty quick. I got attended in about ten minutes.

The check-in lady printed out a new boarding pass and handed it over while saying, “The home printed boarding pass does not work sometimes at the gate, so let me give you this one.”
I asked her whether my flight were fully booked and she nodded. “It surprises me,” she said.
While leaving the check-in desk, I heard the colleague of my check-in lady saying, “We are still missing fifty people right now. We shall see that all of them will appear together at the same time!”

The security was a breeze. Within less than ten minutes, I proceeded to the passenger area.

FLIGHT INFO
My itinerary:
Route: AMS-BCN
Date: 11 March 2010
ETD/ATD: 09.45 / 10.00
ETA/ATA: 11.55 / 12.00
Flight number: VY 8301
Plane: Airbus 320-216
Registration: EC-KCU, named “My name is Ling, Vue Ling”
Delivered: First delivered 26 April 2007 to Clickair as EC-KCU
In charge: Captain Fernando Varete
At 09.14, the first boarding call was made to passengers holding seats from row 25 until 31. The remaining passengers were requested to remain seated.
Line of passengers seemingly assigned in row 25 until 31
Ten minutes later, the passengers sitting from row 20 were allowed to go on board. From row 15 were called five minutes later. My turn came after another five minutes.
Boarding
Sara greeted me at the door and upon scrutinizing my boarding pass, she told me, “Your hand luggage has to be stowed in the overhead locker as you are sitting on the emergency exit row.”
Inside the cabin
When I shot the cabin photo, Sara blew the whistle on me, “Sir, it is not permitted to take pictures inside!”
Her remark had set the tone of the entire flight and unleashed something inside me.
TRAVEL EXPERIENCES
Putting Sara’s remark aside, the VY cabin attendants were ready to help and assist passengers stowing their luggage.
Another cabin attendant, Manuela came to my row and went over the security measurements before performing safety demonstrations.
When we left the gate, I was starting to jot down the registrations which came into my sight at the B pier because of the prohibition. You know what? It was killing me!
By that time, I decided that I did not want to miss valuable window views anymore and had to take pictures somehow when there were no attendants watching.
When we made our way to Zwanenburgbaan, all of the attendants got seated and I did not wait any longer to grab my chances as we accelerated down the runway at 10.10.

When the fasten seat belt signed were switched off, I stood up for an obligatory lavatory visit.
Aft lavatory
When I came out, the buy on board service were already on the way. Sara and Manuela were in charge of the front half of the cabin while Tania and Olga the remaining half. They were blocking the aisle and I could impossibly return to my seat without jumping over Tania and Olga. So I remained standing in front of the aft lavatory at least for twenty minutes. Sara did notice me waiting and made an apologetic gesture. Even after Tania and Olga had finished their duty, I still could not get through with Sara and Manuela at the aisle.
Unexpectedly, Olga poured me a glass of mineral water for free as a compensation of the inconvenience I was experiencing. I was pretty thirsty at that time and gladly accepted her offer. When I finished, Olga topped my glass up. Well, what do you know? I was impressed! After the second round, Olga did not hesitate pouring the third round. By that time, Sara and Manuela were joining us at the back.
“I am so sorry for the inconvenience. I just hope we did not make you waiting too long,” Sara said.
“That is fine. I am well taken care of here,” I replied and while hoping Sara getting milder after this occasion, I proceeded to ask whether it was allowed to take pictures through the window.
To my disappointment, Sara replied, “Due to safety regulations, it is still not permitted. I am so sorry for that,”
I just said OK and thought by myself while returning to my seat, “Well, in that case…”
Ten minutes later, the rubbish were collected. I must say, I did feel pretty uneasy with the attendants going up and down the galley at that time.

Hi Suryo,
Great First part of your trip report with very nice pictures (those you were allowed / able to take) of your flight and of Barcelona as well. Vueling seems to belong to the "better" low-cost airlines. Seemed to be an appropriate replacement for the LH Regional flight you didn't book in the end.
Quoting akhmad (Thread starter): I proceeded to ask whether it was allowed to take pictures through the window.
To my disappointment, Sara replied, "Due to safety regulations, it is still not permitted. I am so sorry for that"
Really strange for a European airline.
I am looking forward to the next part of your report.

You got some nice shots despite the issues.

Hi Suryo,
nice to read this report. CitizenM is an interesting hotel. Indeed a narrow corridor, but the rooms are nice, modern style. It's offering very reasonable rates, so completely my taste. I would love to see more CitizenM hotels in the Netherlands/Europe in the future. Good views also. Have enjoyed them more then once when staying overnight in Sheraton Airport hotel.
Vueling is an interesting airline. I flew them once actually, and they cancelled my flight due to snow in AMS (route BCN-AMS). They did put me in a 4* hotel near Sitges, uphill. Full dinner, free wines and water all night long. And the rooms were really nice too. Such a shame that I had to leave then in the early morning for the 630am flight to AMS. It was organised well according the situation. I guess VY does offer a bit less nowadays though.
Seatpitch in the normal row was too little for my long legs. So I was happy to be at home after that flight experience.
About the photography; this seems to be a general issue with any Spanish airline. Same happened to me on IB and JK before. Anyway, as long as crew doesn't look at you, just proceed with sneaky pics
Awaiting your next installment now...
Regards,
Eric

Woah, you've got to be crazy! NZ$1000 (the approx equivalent) would pay for my round trip to Australia, possibly in Business Class!
Haha, interesting feature. Hopefully it doesn't make you feel drowsy in the shower, so much that you fall asleep in there! Might be good for waking up though!

Hi Suryo,
Great first part of this report. Looks like the weather in Barcelona was very good, definitely a good thing for this miserable winter time...
Hmm, did I get confused or is the toilet seat and the shower in the room at that Citizen M (never heard about this brand, are they owned by the Japanese watchmaker? ) hotel instead of being in a separate bathroom? What a weird setup if this is true.
The interior and furniture of that hotel in BCN was quite impressive as well, although a bit overkill for my tastes.
Great idea to book an XL seat, although it comes at a premium - I've flown VY exactly once MAD-BCN three years ago and even on that less than an hours flight I was very miserable and my feet got sore - and I'm only 181 cms tall!
I love the regular approach into the 25 runways at BCN, the views of the city are just incredible. I always sit on the F side for this purpose if possible - have two of those coming up later in the year, very much looking forward to those!
Shame about the photography, I have a hard time understanding why especially Spanish carriers are so strict about it. It doesn't stop me from doing it, of course, you just have to be quite discreet about it... The one carrier that I seem to always have problems with is actually Finncomm Airlines (FC) - they are quite strict with the "no electronics while the seatbelt sign is on" rule, and on many occasions I've been scalded for using my (digital) camera.

Most certainly. It would have been a deception for me if I had upheld the previous booking.
Apparently based on the experience of fellow A.netter Airbuseric, this prhobition is quite common with Spanish airlines.

I enjoyed Roger’s company very much. Upon entering Barrio Gothic, he invited me to the best tapas bar in Barcelona, Euskal Etxea which is located nearby the church of Santa Maria del Mar.

I wished to indulge myself before leaving for the airport so I booked Ayuverdic massage from the hotel at 11 o ‘clock in the morning. There was one dedicated baggage drop-off desk, so I made way there even I realized. But I just wanted to get rid of my checked luggage so that I could walk around easily.

I was number two in sequence. A check-in lady attending the last minute desk next to the drop-off desk inquired whether I would be traveling to Madrid. “No, Amsterdam,” I replied.

“No problem,” the check-in lady replied.
I was curious about the weight of my checked luggage after all the shopping. To my surprise, the scales indicated 9,3 kilograms! Darn! I could have brought along much more bocados!

Then it was time to pay a visit to Terminal 2. When I arrived there, I was quite shocked. It did not look like six years ago when my partner and I were in BCN for the first time.

The bags were put on the seats as there were no more space available on the overhead lockers. Those bags got eventually checked in as the real passengers arrived.
Neighbor’s view
While leaving the gate towards runway 07R/25L, the lights were dimmed. While wandering through the cabin back to the attendant seat, Elisa switched on the individual lights above people who were reading. Nice touch!
We were number four in sequence. Suddenly, a ringing mobile phone broke the silence. It came from a passenger sitting in row just behind me. I would have expected that Elisa or one of her colleagues would jump out of the seat to give a stern warning, but I did not see anybody until the fasten seat belt signs were switched off.

At 18.55, we leveled off and the cabin attendants were released for the preparation of buy on board. Five minutes later, the fasten seat belt sign were switched off.

Captain Tuñon came into the intercom and informed us that our routing would be Barcelona – Andorra – Paris – Brussels – Amsterdam. At the end, he told us that we expected to land at 21.40 and I was sure I had understood him clearly.
Just before Elisa and her colleague, Maria, got started with the buy on board, I paid a quick visit to the forward lavatory.
Lavatory
Elisa and Maria were in charge of the first fourteen rows. When they reached my row, I decided to buy a bottle of red wine. I had 4 Euro’s ready according the price list, but Elisa mistook herself by saying 3,50 Euro’s. I gave her a bit confused look and Elisa immediately corrected herself and apologized.
Red wine
Somehow the forward half of the cabin were not into buy on board, so Elisa and Maria were finished much sooner than their colleagues who took care of the other half. While withdrawing to the front galley, Elisa switched on several reading lights as a courtesy to the reading passengers.
I noticed that the passengers of this flight were quite demanding. The attendant call button were pressed many times and interestingly being responded quickly. I had the impression that we had got a set of hospitable and more easy going cabin attendants. After 55 minutes into the flight, Elisa appeared to collect the rubbish.
At 20.15, an announcement were made that we started to descend. We touched down at 20.45 at Buitenveldertbaan.

The LH bird turned out to be a replacement of Embraer 195 jet from MUC because the E-jet had to undergo some repairs. Whew, thank God, I did not pursue on booking this flight!
As there were still passengers embarking, I hoped that I still could meet my partner. But no, he was nowhere to see. I rang him and he was already in the baggage claim area.

Hi Akhmad
Excellent TR! And really good pictures as well.
Quoting akhmad (Thread starter): My trip to BCN would certainly be a nice opportunity to meet fellow A.netter Roger (aka Rogerbcn) and therefore I got in touch with him. I was pleased to hear that Roger would be happy to keep me a company.
Quoting akhmad (Thread starter): another exciting A.net meeting had been arranged!
Good to know that, A.net meets are always exciting

Hey Suryo, nice completion of the trip.
Barcelona is such a nice city, and I promised to meet up with Roger on my next visit. Actually I will transfer at BCN in May, but not leave the airport. Maybe we can work something out anyway.
Quoting akhmad (Thread starter): owever, VY website had indicated that the check-in would not be opened earlier than two and a half hour before scheduled departure time.
Quoting akhmad (Thread starter): “My flight will be departing at 18.15. Can I check my luggage in anyway?”
“No problem,” the check-in lady replied.
Quoting akhmad (Reply 10): Elisa switched on the individual lights above people who were reading. Nice touch!
Nice touches indeed, which might this LCC slightly better then other comparable airlines. At least, that was my impression when I flew them.

Oh no! Those RJ-85's are not the most comfortable ones. Except last row is a 2-seater, got them once with my partner. The Emb-195 is logged last week by myself, will work on the report in due time I hope. From 28 March (summer schedule), no LH Emb190/195 to AMS for the time being... as far as I noticed in the schedules.
Regards,
Eric

Hi Akhmad,
Very nice trip report, with lots of pictures, that's how I like it! Nice to see the Citizinm hotel from inside. I've seen it from outside hundreds of times and now I know what the rooms are like, seems like a good hotel with attractive fares. Thanks for sharing!

I can only recommend meeting Roger. He is a really nice chap who has taken good care of me during my BCN visit.
Quoting airbuseric (Reply 12): which might this LCC slightly better then other comparable airlines. At least, that was my impression when I flew them.
Most probably. Other LCC I were flying with was Indonesian Mandala. I must say, Vueling cabin attendants are pretty much like the Mandala ones.
Quoting airbuseric (Reply 12): Oh no! Those RJ-85's are not the most comfortable ones
That was what my partner said. On departure from Austria, he had secured a window emergency exit row seat 14A. Due to the aircraft downgrade, his seat was exchanged to 5B.

Thank you.
Quoting FlyingFinn76 (Reply 14): did they still welcome you "to this vueling" on their welcome announcement?
Not personally, but I still felt welcome.
Quoting FlyingFinn76 (Reply 14): Barcelona's always a blast as well. And the foodstuff - looks good.
Barcelona is a great city. For that kind of delicacies, it is a heaven. I wished I could have used the remaining ten kilo's I had prepaid.

Quoting akhmad (Thread starter): My hostel is located just six minutes walk from the last bus stop of dedicated airport bus line (so called Aerobus) from Terminal 1.
Doesn't look like any hostel I've ever seen. Is it expensive?
Quoting airbuseric (Reply 3): CitizenM is an interesting hotel. Indeed a narrow corridor, but the rooms are nice, modern style.
Quoting akhmad (Reply 9): No, the toilet and the shower are actually in the room.
That's just weird..if you're travelling alone, no big deal, but if you're with somebody...haha

Hola Suryo!
I am glad you enjoyed your trip to BCN.
VY seems to be a decent airline, I have only flown them once, when they opened their flights to LIS, back in 2007 (?) and they had not added any surcharge to seat selection so I could seat at 1A both ways without adding a cent to my 20€ promotion return fare.
I have not been called off yet for taking pictures, I usually fly JK domestically and they never seem to have had any problem with that although they have seen me with the camera on hand. I only remember once at MAD when a gate agent told me that taking pictures on the bridge is forbidden... she was not much convinced with it as she walked away and did not seem too upset about it.
Quoting akhmad (Thread starter): Roger, eres muy maravilloso. ¡Muchas gracias por lo que le hayamos pasado juntos!
Thanks for your kind words, it was a pleasure meeting you... I went back to Euskal Etxea today with some friends but it was much more crowded than on that Thursday night.
Glad you made it to Santa Caterina market, it is an impressive building, recently renovated and with a lovely winding roof full of color... à la Gaudí.
To the rest of A.NETTERS: Benvinguts a Barcelona!, feel free to contact me when in BCN, glad to show you around.
Salut!
Roger

Hola Roger,

Our meeting has made this trip memorable.

You were lucky, I guess. My partner and I flew to Valencia with VY in the same year and we had to pay €10 each to get seated at 1A and 1B on our inbound flight.
Quoting rogerbcn (Reply 19): I have not been called off yet for taking pictures, I usually fly JK domestically and they never seem to have had any problem with that although they have seen me with the camera on hand.
I cannot figure out why.

Wow, I did not know that Santa Caterina had undergone some renovations. The interior was impressive indeed.

Hi Suryo,
very enjoyable report with many nice pictures! Too bad you faced problems with taking pictures, I simply cannot understand these "regulations". As for Vueling - I wasn't impressed by that carrier when I tried it between MAD and BCN in 2008.
Quoting akhmad (Thread starter): I had even nearly got ripped off when I in my enthusiasm made a booking involving the LH Embraer flight and ended up paying for more than 500 Euro’s in Y! Luckily I still managed to cancel the whole booking without penalties.
That would definitely be too much for an E195. Don't forget the number of these planes will ever increase in the next few years...
Quoting akhmad (Thread starter): “Sir, it is not permitted to take pictures inside!”
What a CRAPPY statement! I always hate to hear that nonsense.
Quoting akhmad (Thread starter):
By that time, I decided that I did not want to miss valuable window views anymore and had to take pictures somehow when there were no attendants watching.
Quoting akhmad (Thread starter): The LH bird turned out to be a replacement of Embraer 195 jet from MUC because the E-jet had to undergo some repairs. Whew, thank God, I did not pursue on booking this flight!
Congratulations on another fantastic and extremely informative trip report! .. Now i know exactly what to do and where to go when in Spain (and of course, where to have my Blood Mary!)
It is my first time to know about this Citizen M hotel! What an interesting idea. How close/accessible is it to AMS compared with the Sheraton Schiphol?
Quoting akhmad (Thread starter): I proceeded to ask whether it was allowed to take pictures through the window.
To my disappointment, Sara replied, “Due to safety regulations, it is still not permitted. I am so sorry for that,”
The best thing is unless it is a cockpit visit or something similar, it is best not to ask. I would just carry on discreetly unless i am told to stop.
I just do not understand the whole issue with this. It is not like any crime is committed here or anything!
Thanks a lot for sharing this! I am looking forward to your next installment!
Cheers,
Roni
