Welcome to my first 2010 trip report. After traveling to northern Sweden on EasyJet last year in February and writing a report full of reindeers, snow and frozen Baltic Sea, this time I am heading south on RyanAir.
Two main reasons were behind this trip that lasted for a total of twelve days:
- I went to pay a visit to a friend living and working for the time being in Tenerife;
- RyanAir extended its operations in Spain after relocating several aircrafts from Ireland and Great Britain, which helped me find some tickets at incredible prices; more details in the tips and tricks section at the end of the trip report.
- in addition, I realized that I very much enjoy traveling to Spain, so I decided to go back there.
Onwards flight plan: Bucharest - Barcelona on Tarom, Girona - Tenerife South on RyanAir.
Return flight plan: Tenerife South - Madrid on RyanAir, Madrid - Bucharest on EasyJet
I thought that Tenerife is pretty far away from Bucharest to plan my ride in one single day, so I spiced up my journey with several goodies. Therefore, in addition to Tenerife, there are several wonderful places to be discovered in this trip report:
- three days in Barcelona;
- the Monastery of Montserrat, the holiest shrine of Catalonia, on a rocky peak rising as high as 725 meters (day 4) ;
- the Dali museum in Figueres (day 5) ;
- a sleepy afternoon in Girona, the most important city on the Eastern Spanish coast until the 9th century (day 5) ;
- a rainy day in Toledo (day 11) . The most important snapshots from Tenerife:
- the pyramids of Guimar (day 6) ;
- San Cristobal de la Laguna, an enchanting town with Canarian architecture, enlisted on UNESCO's World Heritage List (day 7) ;
- Calatrava's wave-shaped concert hall in the capital Santa Cruz de Tenerife (day 7) ;;
- stormy ocean and the lighthouse at Punta del Hidalgo (day 7) ;;
- La Orotava, another town on the World Heritage List (ziua 8) ;;
- the beach of El Medano with its black sand (ziua 8) ;;
- breathtaking climb to the top of the Teide volcano, at 3555 meters (day 9) ;.
Last, but not the least, for all aviation enthusiasts, a total of 13 hours of flight in four airplanes belonging to three different European carriers, four early morning take-offs (I went crazy waking up at five o'clock in the morning for four times) and the same amount of landings.
Make yourselves comfortable and let's kick off the whole story with the first flight, a three-hour enjoyable ride to Barcelona.
Day 1, Wednesday the 24th of February 2010: Bucharest - Barcelona
Tarom ROT 421, Bucharest Otopeni (OTP) - Barcelona El Prat (BCN)
Block time 09:15 - 11:30 (3h15m)
Real time 09:40 - 11:40 (3h0m)
Distance: 1 987 km
Load factor 50%
Aircraft: Boeing 737-800, YR-BGR, delivered on 04.12.2008
I woke up very early that Wednesday in order to avoid the Bucharest morning rush hour. When my phone started to ring, at five o'clock in the morning, I asked myself why am I willingly doing this all over again. I took the bus to the airport and, around 7, I was in front of the Otopeni terminal building. Few clouds covered the early morning sky.
Checking in for the flight was a breeze, I got the seat I had requested over the internet, 26F, this is on the back of the aircraft, right side, window seat., my favorite place on board. We were bussed to the airplane waiting on a remote stand and I got the chance to take some pictures.
Tarom Airbus A318, heading to the runway
Two aircrafts were queuing for departure on runway 08 left
Tarom ATR 45, registered YR-ATC, delivered on 12.03.1999
Tarom Boeing 737-800, registered YR-BGS, delivered on 24.01.2009, with the shape of an Airbus A310 in the background
We eventually arrived at our airplane, YR-BGR, the same aircraft that brought me from Bruxelles to Bucharest in April 2009
At 9 o'clock I was already on board
Doors closed, slides armed at 9:15 and we headed to the runway. Tarom Airbus A310, registered YR-LCB, delivered on 17.12.1992, maybe some maintenance works at the hangar
We waited for the second Airbus A318 belonging to Tarom to depart
Mild wind that morning
We were cleared to enter runway 08 left, we waited for a while, afterwards the engines were spooled to life and off we went
Almost 2 000 km ahead
Due to the very poor load factor and with all passengers jammed in front of the aircraft, all 13 rows at the end of the cabin were mine
The crew started to work something out in the back of the cabin and I could hear them discussing about an oven full of smoke. Eventually we got something to eat for breakfast, eggs and a sausage, roasted zucchinis, fruit salad and coffee. While on an airplane, my culinary expectations are inversely proportional to both speed and altitude, so I fed myself thoroughly.
We got close to the Balaton Lake in Hungary, cruising at almost 12 000 meters
The lake seemed frozen
I red some more about Barcelona, a first time visit for me
Tail shadow like a shark fin
We headed towards the South near Maribor
We were not alone up there, someone in a hurry came from the North, flew beneath us and left a black contrail behind
Ligurian Sea to the left of the aircraft
Marseille Airport, first time caught on camera on a RyanAir flight between Pisa and Seville in June 2009
Istres military airfield
I couldn't believe my eyes seeing such an empty cabin
We approached the coast of Spain coming down from the North
The Mediterranean Sea wanted to show us who is really in charge and sent the winds to shake us a little bit. It was pretty intense during the descent, I thought we are about to loose all our bolts into the sea

A little bit of flaps
Barcelona
More flaps and everything got even bumpier
Windy and sunny Barcelona
The pilot hammered us onto the runway in order to avoid any futile bouncing
Welcome to Barcelona and EasyJet Airbus A319, registered G-EZIC, delivered on 07.04.2005
We parked next to an El Al Boeing 737, registered 4X-EKC, delivered on 31.07.1999

My hotel was in the opposite side of the city so it took me around one hour and a half to get there by bus and tube. It was in fact a student campus that I found on hostelworld.com. I paid 28 euros per night, single room, gorgeous buffet breakfast included. I am publishing some photos because I would like you to know that one can still find good value for money hotels
A modest, albeit clean room, bathroom included
Days 2 and 3, Thursday the 24th and Friday the 25th of February 2010: Barcelona
You can't simply not love seaside cities
Sagrada Familia seen from Montjuic
Gaudi at its best: Casa Batllo
La Pedrera
Rooftop view
Sagrada Familia, Nativity facade
The Passion facade
Tower view
Gaudi's name since 1984 on the World Heritage List
Next to the Sagrada Familia you can cater for your hunger at this open bar eatery for 10 euros - eat as much as you like

Day 4, Saturday, 27th of February 2010: Montserrat
I simply coulnd't help climbing the mounting of Montserrat after seeing the pictures in my Lonely Planet guidebook. The scenery is astonishing and the monastery very beautiful, hidden inside thick clouds and persistent rain.
One hour ride by train from Placa Espanya to Monistrol de Montserrat
Heading up into the mountains take another 30 minutes by the rack and pinion train on a steep slope
That's where we're heading
The views are worth the effort of going up there
Montserrat Monastery
Marble-paved inner yard
Mass was being held inside
A second funicular climbs even higher up into the mountain, up to 1100 meters
A misty road ahead, on the very edge of the cliff
Sant Joan chapel, on the summit
Back to the monastery, clouds came down as well
I returned to Monistrol on the rack and pinion train
Farewell, Barcelona: last view of the Sagrada before moving to the next stage of my journey
Day 5, Sunday, 28th of February 2010: Figueres and Girona
I also planned to visit Girona and Figueres on Sunday, as long as on Monday morning I was flying at 07:20 from GRO to TFS. I have also booked a hotel room near the airport.
Estacio del Nord bus station in Barcelona
On the road heading to Girona, France is not that far away
Train ride from Girona to Figueres
In Figueres, Dali was showing off the moustaches he used to sign his canvases
The Dali Museum
Picasso as seen by Dali
Dream caused by the flight of a bee around a pomegranate one second before awakening, 1944
I left behind Dali's unique imagination and I returned to Girona by train. Figueres train station
Sleepy Girona on a Sunday afternoon
Girona's Cathedral (right side of the picture, 12th century) and the Church of Sant Feliu (17th century)
At dusk I headed to the airport in search of my hotel. Few snapshots at the airport: boarding of a RyanAir aircraft
GRO
Check-in
Self checkin by RyanAir
I found my hotel two minutes away from the terminal building
Pretty expensive, 40 euros a night, but I managed to fall asleep at 9 o'clock in the evening thus surviving my second five o'clock waking-up of this journey
Day 6, Monday, March the 1st 2010: Girona - Tenerife South, the pyramids of Guimar, Los Gigantes
RyanAir FR 9725, Barcelona Girona (GRO) - Tenerife South (TFS)
Block time 07:20 - 09:40 (3h20m)
Real time 07:25 - 10:15 (3h50m)
Distance: 2 331 km
Load factor 100%
Aircraft: Boeing 737-800, EI-DCF, delivered on 01.07.2004
I was already in the terminal building at quarter past six. Not too many passengers at the RyanAir bag drop desks
Flight roster, 25 RyanAir flights expected to depart until 15:15
At 7 boarding started and we walked to the airplane
I boarded the plane using the rear stairs and I sat down in the last rows of seats, left side of the cabin, because I wanted to take photos of the sunrise over the Mediterranean sea. GRO tower
The pilot welcomed us on board and explained that he expects at least 30 minutes delay due to very strong headwinds of around 160 km/h over the Atlantic. It was therefore impossible for us to reach Tenerife on time, at 09:40
We were cleared to enter runway 20
We took off to the south
In a few moments I spotted the Mediterranean sea
Sunrise
We turned right and left the Mediterranean Sean behind. We flew over Spain for around one hour
Fully booked flight this morning
Picture taken from the front of the cabin
Leaving Spain behind and flying over the Atlantic
I've got a glimpse of the African coastline and the Anti-Atlas Mountains' peaks; no joy in taking any pics though. After around two hours and a half of flight over the Atlantic we started our descent on Tenerife
The Peak of El Teide in the upper corner of the photograph
Final approach on runway 8. The volcano got covered by clouds and remained hidden for the following two days
Landing at Tenerife South at 10:15 local time, exactly 30 minutes behind the schedule
We taxied and parked near this ArkeFly Boeing 737, registered PH-TFA, first flight 8.11.2007

No time to loose, so I swiftly departed towards the Guimar Pyramids, my first objective on the island. It is infact a group of eight pyramids, looking like the Mayan ones, discovered by the Norwegian archeologist Thor Heyerdahl. He lived in Tenerife until 2002 and developed a theory concerning the alleged ties between the Canary Islands inhabitants and the Americas way before Columbus sailed across the pond.
Don't expect to see a pyramid like the Sun Pyramid at Teotihuacan or Chichen Itza…
Short stop in Candelaria. Near a rocky beach, one can visit the Basilica de la Nuestra Senora de Candelaria
The second thing to see during my first day on the island were the rocks of Los Gigantes. It is in fact a very tall and spectacular wall, where the Atlantic waves break. Best views from Playa de los Gigantes
My friend Manuel hosted me at his place in Los Cristianos, in a very nice block with a pool

Day 7, Tuesday, March the 2nd 2010: Santa Cruz de Tenerife, San Cristobal de la Laguna, Punta del Hidalgo
First thing in the morning: a 90 km drive on the highway to Santa Cruz de Tenerife. First stop: the theatre hosting the philharmonic’s concerts. The auditorium has been designed by the Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, it has perfect acoustics and became the landmark of the capital thanks to its original shape
Right behind the Auditorium, the ocean was huge, blue and calm
Downtown Santa Cruz, with the Anaga Mountains in the background
Lots of plants in the city
Iglesia de la Nuestra Senora de la Concepcion, built in 1498, displaying mudejar-style ceilings
Castillo de San Juan, 17th century, a place were slaves from Africa were traded
Iglesia de San Francisco, 17th century
Mercado de la Nuestra Senora de Africa
Huge ficus
Next stop: San Cristobal de la Laguna, since 1999 on the World Heritage List thanks to its well preserved old architecture
I am uploading several pictures of La Laguna, maybe we will also understand why Romanian old houses should not be destroyed in order to build new ones
Some of these houses are private properties, others are offices of institutions or companies, others are museums and can be visited by tourists. All of them are refurbished and kept exactly the way they have been built hundreds of years ago
Convento de Santa Catalina
Iglesia de Santo Domingo
The oldest church in town, Iglesia de la Nuestra Senora de la Concepcion, built in 1502
From the tower one can very well see the Tenerife North airport, the famous Tenerife North airport I might add, you all very well know why…
Vueling Airbus A319 was landing, registration unclear
Cosy square in the centre of the old city
At 15:00 I drove to Punta del Hidalgo, a remote and savage corner of the island. The new lighthouse
High seas and a spectacular scenery
Waves easily crossed over a mole
Day 8, Wednesday, March the 3rd 2010: La Orotava, Santiago del Teide, first decent snapshots of the volcano and sundown on the black sandy beach of El Medano
I had a valid permit to climb on the peak of El Teide on Wednesday. Unfortunately, due the road to the cable car was blocked by rocks, so the entire mountain was closed. My only chance to go to the summit was on Thursday, my last day on the island.
On my way to La Orotava I stopped in Stantiago del Teide. Right behind this church…
I saw the Peak of El Teide for the first time, thanks to a window through the clouds, the mountain where the devil Guyota lives
La Orotava, a quiet town with a gorgeous ocean view
Iglesia de la Concepcion
Iglesia de San Augustin
Iberoamerican Handicrafts Museum and Iglesia de Santo Domingo
In the evening I returned to the south of the island and I went to see the black sand at the El Medano beach
Clear views of the Teide volcano
The ocean at dusk
Day 9, Thursday, March the 4th, 2010: The Peak of El Teide, 3555 meters high
At 9:00 I drove to the cable car. First stop: Vilaflor, a small village at around 1000 meters
After another 20 minutes of climbing, another stop with a view over the clouds’ level
The road ahead
At 2000 meters I reached a huge plateau, this wide, open space took me by surprise
But we are only at 2000 meters high and the summit reaches as high as 3718 meters
The cable car starts at 2356 meters and climbs up to 3555 in 8 minutes
Quote from my Lonely Planet guidebook: “Top it off by taking the cable car to the summit for the ultimate heady experience”
While climbing inside the cable car my ears popped like on an airplane. The road on the plateau was getting tinier and tinier
Very steep slope as we got closer to the summit
Don’t look down
Minus 2 degrees Celsius up there and another 20 tourists
Nice view of La Gomera island
The world from 3555 meters; Unfortunately it was not a very clear day
A mere 163 meters stood between us and the very summit. The access path was unfortunately blocked by ice and was closed
And this brings me to the end of the four days break in Tenerife. The long journey back to Bucharest now begins. My return flight plan: Tenerife South – Madrid on RyanAir, Madrid – Bucharest on EasyJet

Awful moment, being scheduled to fly at 7 AM. Check in for the flight
The only plane I could photograph that morning: Air China Airbus A330, preparing for a long flight to Sao Paulo
Boarding started before 7AM
The climb was slow. After breaking through the clouds we flew through the morning’s cold and blue light
After steering to the right I could also see the Moon

Tips and tricks
This trip wouldn’t have been possible without finding some cheap fares witn RyanAir. End of July last year they announced a unprecedented expansion of the operations in Spain and on August the 1st, 2010 I was already buying my tickets: 36 euros for the Girona - Tenerife leg and 56 euros for Tenerife - Madrid, hold-baggage included. The EasyJet flight was another 50 euros.
The flight to Barcelona was the most difficult one. I bought a ticket with WizzAir in the first place (60 euros) but they changed the departure time from Bucharest from 17:00 to 23:00. I was thus loosing one night of accommodation in Barcelona and also sacrificing my first day there due to being very tired. So I decided to ask for my money back and I paid 117 euros on the Tarom flight, earning one extra day in Barcelona. This is how I missed what was meant to be my first flying experience with WizzAir.
Hotels. In Barcelona: Agora BCN, in Toledo: Hostal Sol, both of them booked through hostelworld.com. Girona Airport hotel: Viloby Park, booked through booking.com. Rent a car in Tenerife through autoreisen.es, paying by credit card on the spot, not over the Internet. I paid with an embossed debit card and I didn’t even have a passport, it worked out only with my ID card plus my driving licence.
For climbing on the Peak of El Teide there is a permit scheme in place. The permit can be obtained free of charge by applying via email at teide@oapn.mma.es at least by seven days in advance.
At bcnshop.barcelonaturisme.com one ca buy museum tickets at a discount.
Final remarks
It’s been an intensive trip as I tried to visit as many places as possible and a grueling one thanks to the four early morning flights. The Canary Islands are really worth visiting and since I found out that there is a ferryboat connecting Fuerteventura to Western Sahara, I have been stricken by some more touristically intensive thoughts
All flights were all right, by far the most comfortable was the first one on Tarom, for the reason that I was almost alone in the cabin. RyanAir offers a honest service and EasyJet remains my favorite company, please don’t ask me why, I won’t be able to explain.
I hope you enjoyed the entire story. If any questions or comments feel free to click on the “reply” button…

Always nice to have an airshow on European flights. Do you know whether the 73Gs and A318s are equipped with that, too?

Hi PlaneHunter,
All but two of RO's 737 aircraft have overhead IFE. Only YR-BGA and BGB, both 733's, don't have this form of IFE, as they were delivered in 1992 or 1993. The A318s (and A310s) all have it as well. The ATR craft, obviously, do not have IFE.
Quoting akhmad (Reply 6): I wonder how long this route would last with such low load
It will last. Might become seasonal though... I'm pretty sure it's full in summer. However, it is a low-yield route, as indicated by the 738s flying there (these craft don't have Business Class afaik).

Hi,
What an epic trip and report - you sure are right that you crammed a *lot* into your time spent in Spain! I love your pictures, so many high quality ones that I won't even start to comment on individual ones.
Shame on the RO load, hopefully they will improve.
Nice shot of the Blueair B738 at MAD - I'm booked on this red-eye flight to BBU in August, here's hoping that the company will still around by that time!
Thanks a lot for posting this.
PS. Are you the same guy who posted a report about southern Spain, flying there on FR via PSA/BLQ, taking the ferry to Morocco etc. some time last year? I still have fond memories of that one, one of my all time favorites.
