Welcome to my first 2010 trip report. After traveling to northern Sweden on EasyJet last year in February and writing a report full of reindeers, snow and frozen Baltic Sea, this time I am heading south on RyanAir.

Two main reasons were behind this trip that lasted for a total of twelve days:
- I went to pay a visit to a friend living and working for the time being in Tenerife;
- RyanAir extended its operations in Spain after relocating several aircrafts from Ireland and Great Britain, which helped me find some tickets at incredible prices; more details in the tips and tricks section at the end of the trip report.
- in addition, I realized that I very much enjoy traveling to Spain, so I decided to go back there.

Onwards flight plan: Bucharest - Barcelona on Tarom, Girona - Tenerife South on RyanAir.
http://i550.photobucket.com/albums/ii403/mihairosioru/teide/report/dus.jpg

Return flight plan: Tenerife South - Madrid on RyanAir, Madrid - Bucharest on EasyJet
http://i550.photobucket.com/albums/ii403/mihairosioru/teide/report/intors.jpg

I thought that Tenerife is pretty far away from Bucharest to plan my ride in one single day, so I spiced up my journey with several goodies. Therefore, in addition to Tenerife, there are several wonderful places to be discovered in this trip report:
- three days in Barcelona;
- the Monastery of Montserrat, the holiest shrine of Catalonia, on a rocky peak rising as high as 725 meters (day 4) ;
- the Dali museum in Figueres (day 5) ;
- a sleepy afternoon in Girona, the most important city on the Eastern Spanish coast until the 9th century (day 5) ;
- a rainy day in Toledo (day 11) .
The most important snapshots from Tenerife:
- the pyramids of Guimar (day 6) ;
- San Cristobal de la Laguna, an enchanting town with Canarian architecture, enlisted on UNESCO's World Heritage List (day 7) ;
- Calatrava's wave-shaped concert hall in the capital Santa Cruz de Tenerife (day 7) ;;
- stormy ocean and the lighthouse at Punta del Hidalgo (day 7) ;;
- La Orotava, another town on the World Heritage List (ziua 8) ;;
- the beach of El Medano with its black sand (ziua 8) ;;
- breathtaking climb to the top of the Teide volcano, at 3555 meters (day 9) ;.
Last, but not the least, for all aviation enthusiasts, a total of 13 hours of flight in four airplanes belonging to three different European carriers, four early morning take-offs (I went crazy waking up at five o'clock in the morning for four times) and the same amount of landings.

Make yourselves comfortable and let's kick off the whole story with the first flight, a three-hour enjoyable ride to Barcelona.

I woke up very early that Wednesday in order to avoid the Bucharest morning rush hour. When my phone started to ring, at five o'clock in the morning, I asked myself why am I willingly doing this all over again. I took the bus to the airport and, around 7, I was in front of the Otopeni terminal building. Few clouds covered the early morning sky.
http://i550.photobucket.com/albums/ii403/mihairosioru/teide/z1/z1_otopeni.jpg

Checking in for the flight was a breeze, I got the seat I had requested over the internet, 26F, this is on the back of the aircraft, right side, window seat., my favorite place on board. We were bussed to the airplane waiting on a remote stand and I got the chance to take some pictures.

We eventually arrived at our airplane, YR-BGR, the same aircraft that brought me from Bruxelles to Bucharest in April 2009
http://i550.photobucket.com/albums/ii403/mihairosioru/teide/z1/z1_yrbgr.jpg

At 9 o'clock I was already on board
http://i550.photobucket.com/albums/ii403/mihairosioru/teide/z1/z1_boarding.jpg

Doors closed, slides armed at 9:15 and we headed to the runway. Tarom Airbus A310, registered YR-LCB, delivered on 17.12.1992, maybe some maintenance works at the hangar

We waited for the second Airbus A318 belonging to Tarom to depart

We were cleared to enter runway 08 left, we waited for a while, afterwards the engines were spooled to life and off we went

Due to the very poor load factor and with all passengers jammed in front of the aircraft, all 13 rows at the end of the cabin were mine
http://i550.photobucket.com/albums/ii403/mihairosioru/teide/z1/z1_poorlf.jpg

The crew started to work something out in the back of the cabin and I could hear them discussing about an oven full of smoke. Eventually we got something to eat for breakfast, eggs and a sausage, roasted zucchinis, fruit salad and coffee. While on an airplane, my culinary expectations are inversely proportional to both speed and altitude, so I fed myself thoroughly.
http://i550.photobucket.com/albums/ii403/mihairosioru/teide/z1/z1_breakfast.jpg

We got close to the Balaton Lake in Hungary, cruising at almost 12 000 meters

The Mediterranean Sea wanted to show us who is really in charge and sent the winds to shake us a little bit. It was pretty intense during the descent, I thought we are about to loose all our bolts into the sea

My hotel was in the opposite side of the city so it took me around one hour and a half to get there by bus and tube. It was in fact a student campus that I found on hostelworld.com. I paid 28 euros per night, single room, gorgeous buffet breakfast included. I am publishing some photos because I would like you to know that one can still find good value for money hotels

Day 4, Saturday, 27th of February 2010: Montserrat

I simply coulnd't help climbing the mounting of Montserrat after seeing the pictures in my Lonely Planet guidebook. The scenery is astonishing and the monastery very beautiful, hidden inside thick clouds and persistent rain.

One hour ride by train from Placa Espanya to Monistrol de Montserrat

I boarded the plane using the rear stairs and I sat down in the last rows of seats, left side of the cabin, because I wanted to take photos of the sunrise over the Mediterranean sea. GRO tower

The pilot welcomed us on board and explained that he expects at least 30 minutes delay due to very strong headwinds of around 160 km/h over the Atlantic. It was therefore impossible for us to reach Tenerife on time, at 09:40

We were cleared to enter runway 20

No time to loose, so I swiftly departed towards the Guimar Pyramids, my first objective on the island. It is infact a group of eight pyramids, looking like the Mayan ones, discovered by the Norwegian archeologist Thor Heyerdahl. He lived in Tenerife until 2002 and developed a theory concerning the alleged ties between the Canary Islands inhabitants and the Americas way before Columbus sailed across the pond.

Day 7, Tuesday, March the 2nd 2010: Santa Cruz de Tenerife, San Cristobal de la Laguna, Punta del Hidalgo

First thing in the morning: a 90 km drive on the highway to Santa Cruz de Tenerife. First stop: the theatre hosting the philharmonic’s concerts. The auditorium has been designed by the Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, it has perfect acoustics and became the landmark of the capital thanks to its original shape

Day 8, Wednesday, March the 3rd 2010: La Orotava, Santiago del Teide, first decent snapshots of the volcano and sundown on the black sandy beach of El Medano

I had a valid permit to climb on the peak of El Teide on Wednesday. Unfortunately, due the road to the cable car was blocked by rocks, so the entire mountain was closed. My only chance to go to the summit was on Thursday, my last day on the island.

On my way to La Orotava I stopped in Stantiago del Teide. Right behind this church…

Day 9, Thursday, March the 4th, 2010: The Peak of El Teide, 3555 meters high

At 9:00 I drove to the cable car. First stop: Vilaflor, a small village at around 1000 meters
http://i550.photobucket.com/albums/ii403/mihairosioru/teide/tenerife/t_vilaflor.jpg

After another 20 minutes of climbing, another stop with a view over the clouds’ level

The road ahead
http://i550.photobucket.com/albums/ii403/mihairosioru/teide/tenerife/t_road2teide.jpg

At 2000 meters I reached a huge plateau, this wide, open space took me by surprise
http://i550.photobucket.com/albums/ii403/mihairosioru/teide/tenerife/t_platou.jpg

But we are only at 2000 meters high and the summit reaches as high as 3718 meters
http://i550.photobucket.com/albums/ii403/mihairosioru/teide/tenerife/t_platouteide.jpg

The cable car starts at 2356 meters and climbs up to 3555 in 8 minutes
http://i550.photobucket.com/albums/ii403/mihairosioru/teide/tenerife/t_telecabina.jpg

Quote from my Lonely Planet guidebook: “Top it off by taking the cable car to the summit for the ultimate heady experience”
http://i550.photobucket.com/albums/ii403/mihairosioru/teide/tenerife/t_teidecables.jpg

While climbing inside the cable car my ears popped like on an airplane. The road on the plateau was getting tinier and tinier

http://i550.photobucket.com/albums/ii403/mihairosioru/teide/tenerife/t_teideview2.jpg

A mere 163 meters stood between us and the very summit. The access path was unfortunately blocked by ice and was closed
http://i550.photobucket.com/albums/ii403/mihairosioru/teide/tenerife/t_teidevarf.jpg

And this brings me to the end of the four days break in Tenerife. The long journey back to Bucharest now begins. My return flight plan: Tenerife South – Madrid on RyanAir, Madrid – Bucharest on EasyJet

Tips and tricks

This trip wouldn’t have been possible without finding some cheap fares witn RyanAir. End of July last year they announced a unprecedented expansion of the operations in Spain and on August the 1st, 2010 I was already buying my tickets: 36 euros for the Girona - Tenerife leg and 56 euros for Tenerife - Madrid, hold-baggage included. The EasyJet flight was another 50 euros.

The flight to Barcelona was the most difficult one. I bought a ticket with WizzAir in the first place (60 euros) but they changed the departure time from Bucharest from 17:00 to 23:00. I was thus loosing one night of accommodation in Barcelona and also sacrificing my first day there due to being very tired. So I decided to ask for my money back and I paid 117 euros on the Tarom flight, earning one extra day in Barcelona. This is how I missed what was meant to be my first flying experience with WizzAir.

Hotels. In Barcelona: Agora BCN, in Toledo: Hostal Sol, both of them booked through hostelworld.com. Girona Airport hotel: Viloby Park, booked through booking.com. Rent a car in Tenerife through autoreisen.es, paying by credit card on the spot, not over the Internet. I paid with an embossed debit card and I didn’t even have a passport, it worked out only with my ID card plus my driving licence.

For climbing on the Peak of El Teide there is a permit scheme in place. The permit can be obtained free of charge by applying via email at teide@oapn.mma.es at least by seven days in advance.

At bcnshop.barcelonaturisme.com one ca buy museum tickets at a discount.

Final remarks

It’s been an intensive trip as I tried to visit as many places as possible and a grueling one thanks to the four early morning flights. The Canary Islands are really worth visiting and since I found out that there is a ferryboat connecting Fuerteventura to Western Sahara, I have been stricken by some more touristically intensive thoughts

All flights were all right, by far the most comfortable was the first one on Tarom, for the reason that I was almost alone in the cabin. RyanAir offers a honest service and EasyJet remains my favorite company, please don’t ask me why, I won’t be able to explain.
I hope you enjoyed the entire story. If any questions or comments feel free to click on the “reply” button…

Hi mihairosioru,

very enjoyable report with many great pictures. However, it took forever to load. Maybe it would be better next time to compose two reports.

Quoting mihairosioru (Thread starter):
Due to the very poor load factor and with all passengers jammed in front of the aircraft, all 13 rows at the end of the cabin were mine

Bad for the airline, good for you!

Quoting mihairosioru (Thread starter):
The crew started to work something out in the back of the cabin and I could hear them discussing about an oven full of smoke. Eventually we got something to eat for breakfast, eggs and a sausage, roasted zucchinis, fruit salad and coffee.

Good to see Tarom serves a hot breakfast.

Quoting mihairosioru (Thread starter):
We got close to the Balaton Lake in Hungary, cruising at almost 12 000 meters

Always nice to have an airshow on European flights. Do you know whether the 73Gs and A318s are equipped with that, too?

Quoting mihairosioru (Thread starter):
Our cabin has been flooded with the sun’s powerful rays

Nice shot, almost looks like mood lighting.

Exactly my thought.
Quoting mihairosioru (Thread starter):
couldn't believe my eyes seeing such an empty cabin
Quoting PlaneHunter (Reply 5):

I wonder how long this route would last with such low load.

A very sharp photo with T1. Which camera did you use?

Memories. Memories. I have been there about two weeks ago.

Quoting mihairosioru (Reply 2):
you all very well know why…

Yesterday it has been 33 years ago.

It looks like there are much more gorgeous places in Spain to discover. Thank you for sharing.

Cheers,

Hi PlaneHunter,

All but two of RO's 737 aircraft have overhead IFE. Only YR-BGA and BGB, both 733's, don't have this form of IFE, as they were delivered in 1992 or 1993. The A318s (and A310s) all have it as well. The ATR craft, obviously, do not have IFE.

It will last. Might become seasonal though... I'm pretty sure it's full in summer. However, it is a low-yield route, as indicated by the 738s flying there (these craft don't have Business Class afaik).

Hi,

What an epic trip and report - you sure are right that you crammed a *lot* into your time spent in Spain! I love your pictures, so many high quality ones that I won't even start to comment on individual ones.

Shame on the RO load, hopefully they will improve.

Nice shot of the Blueair B738 at MAD - I'm booked on this red-eye flight to BBU in August, here's hoping that the company will still around by that time!

Thanks a lot for posting this.

PS. Are you the same guy who posted a report about southern Spain, flying there on FR via PSA/BLQ, taking the ferry to Morocco etc. some time last year? I still have fond memories of that one, one of my all time favorites.

Nothing special, just a Kodak P850.

I don't think you need to worry. BlueAir is doing just fine.

Yes, that's me. The other report is here:
