ONE STEP FORWARD, TWO STEPS BACK… LET’S DO THE CHA-CHA!

As with most Indonesian carriers, they are normally treated with disdain. Safety concerns and operational back logs are rife on a normal day. We hear of cascading delays, near misses with accidents / incidents and how an airline manages to survive a day is not based on snap-shot strictly audited SOPs, but luck – pure luck.

There are Indonesian carriers, and then there is Lion Air. It all began in the year 2000 with a motley crew of aircraft types ranging from Yak 42s to 737-200s and an A310 – the latter which never left the ground. And then there was the absolutely horrendous period with their fleet of ex-Continental MD80s. Acquisition of 2nd hand frames was akin to frightened villagers in the Caribbean raiding the supermarket shelves for food supplies in anticipation of a hurricane, what Lion saw they grabbed. The fleet grew, and boy did they grow like Oprah’s weight.

I had the pleasure of flying on their MD80 a few years ago. My experience? Snowballed mechanical delays, stressed out ground staff yelling, frustrated customers fuming all stuffed into a crowded holding lounge from several delayed flights, overworked cabin crew, aircraft which had a slew of safety breaches I didn’t even know where to start (No seatbelt? Inoperable PA system?). It was pure unadulterated mayhem.

Who could forget the expat pilots who would rather break their contracts than to have a job with the airline?

Even when they tried to modernize and diversify the business, it wasn’t without controversy. There is a LARGE order of 737-900ERs to grapple with – all 180 of them. The number probably reflects the anticipated formation of Lion Air Australia of which the application was rejected by CASA several times out of safety concerns. Other than frequency adjustments on the domestic side, there haven’t been many developments to signal a tsunami of growth coming Lion’s way. So where would they fly the planes to let alone park them? Your guess is as good as mine. To date, about 30 have been delivered.

Hushed reports of numerous tail scrapes on the 737-900ER then started to surface amongst the industry insiders. Gosh, will the wheel of bad news ever stop churning? Still, it didn’t prevent Lion Air from milking the debutant marketing benefits of being the launch customer for this variant. Everywhere you go in Indonesia; there are banners and billboards at the travel agents, along the highways, on the labels of mineral water bottles, at the malls, outside public toilets, on the bra of a prostitute… And the words clearly scream LION AIR – FIRST TO FLY, BRAND NEW BOEING 737-900ER.

Any airline would have been proud. This was a perfect opportunity to show the world how a 3rd beat squalid scoundrel from the slums had matured into a jet-setting socialite. Or have they? Do we have a Slumdog Millionaire Jamaal Malik in the making?

So why did I come back to this airline which I walked away swearing never again in 2004? Perhaps a part of me was very curious about the progress (or lack of) since then. Or maybe I was just yearning for some drama on my frequent Jakarta commute? But then again, the reason could be as simple as this; they are cheaper than Air Asia.

TICKETING

Lion has embraced the e-Commerce age and I do know it took them quite a while to get here. The website is idiot-proof and since international bookings can be done there, they have one triumph over Garuda. But my joy was short lived. The webpage hung itself after I confirmed payment. A quick phone call to the office solved this problem and I had to go down and pay for the ticket in person.

Lion’s office is located downtown in Singapore. Furnished very simply with Ikea sofas and tables, it was actually quite Spartan. I was horrified to find out there that I have been charged for the fumbled booking. I was asked if I still wanted to keep it after my ticket issuance. Woman, do I look like I want to travel on two seats? Do I look rich or is my ass so big you have to pull a Southwest on me? The former booking was then nullified with no questions asked. I am still waiting for my credit card statement to see if there is any need for dispute.

Done… All in USD 69.00 return fare with 20kg check in allowance thrown in. E-ticket was dot-matrix printed on a blank piece of paper. There was nothing pompous, no company letterhead, very simple.

DEPARTURE DAY

19 March 2010

There is a saying I have coined myself – Where there is Garuda, Lion isn’t far behind. Imitation is the best form of flattery some say, especially in the form of a similar flight schedule is all but obvious. At Changi Airport, the Lion’s den at Row 13 is just next to Garuda’s mosh pit at 14. Talk about a pesky fruit fly which wouldn’t stop buzzing around your face!

Check in is handled by Singapore Airport Terminal Services (SATS). The ground handler has gone through a major rebranding and now their new purple / black uniforms make their staff look like cheerleaders in a high school sports event.

“GIMME AN L! GIMME AN O! GIMME AN S! GIMME AN E! GIMME AN R!!!! L-O-S-E-R! WHAT DO WE HAVE?! LOSER! LOSER! GGGoooooOOOOO… LOSER! Yayyyyyyyy…”

Comfort seems to be the key. Fine by me if you have the body to carry it off but when you are overflowing at places you aren’t supposed to, you become a perfect faux pas candidate for the fashion police. T-shirts and track pants – SERIOUSLY? These poor SATS employees who were forced to don these horrid looking outfits were only a fanny-pack away from looking like those loud “Sylvia Fine” type of holiday makers on American Airlines flying JFK-SJU on a Friday evening. RED ALERT ISSUED for Barney mascots roaming about Terminal 1!

The airside viewing gallery at Terminal 1 is thankfully being restored. There are really not many reasons anymore for people like me to gripe and moan about the lack of a view out of the glass windows. There is no better way to while your time away other than sprawling yourself out on the lazy chair and looking at the action outside. I concur it is better than sex.

You would be forgiven for thinking you have stumbled into the wrong airport. Err… is this KUL?

Flashing of LAST CALL in the FIDs got my attention. Made a beeline for the gate when I realized I still haven’t stopped by to the money changers yet! See what happens when you sprawl? I guess your brain gets sprawled along with everything else too.

In the midst of this photo, you will see the new SATS uniform. Is it ugly? You decide.

So much for LAST CALL, the holding lounge at gate C17 was still packed to the brim. As often as I fly out of Changi, I still managed to get fooled by the LAST CALL bit so shame on them if they fool me once, but shame on me if they fool me twice!

Boarding by row numbers was very strictly enforced so kudos to SATS for it. I always love to see people getting turned away. Since I assigned to the last row, I got to be in the first group to board. Finally the moment had arrived. I took a deep breadth of apprehension…

Door 1L

“*Sore, Pak… Apa khabar? Sore, Pak. “

*Sore, pronounced “saw-ray” – is an Indonesian greeting meaning “good day”.

Greetings from the 5 flight attendants positioned along the aisles came fast and furious. It felt as if I had stepped into a Japanese restaurant where waiters would almost shout a welcome at your face in unison complete with spit trajectories. But something was amiss; they weren’t smiling, eyes looked empty and lips too lifeless to be curled into a smile. In fact, they were slouching with their hands rested on top of the seats. “Sore… Sore… Sore…”, the greetings were done without any eye contact and if I observed correctly, they were sore-ing my crotch.

I could only describe my first impression of the Lion Lassies with one word – FATIGUED.

Up close, the kebaya design they don looks better in pictures than they really do in real life. Bits of it were fraying on some of them and they really looked like waitresses at a Sari Indah Indonesian Restaurant. Effort was made to glam up their coifs but after numerous killer turn-arounds, their French twists attempts were coming apart and it looked anything but pretty. In fact, it looked like a “morning after” effect. Here’s a tip for free, ladies – hair gel.

As expressionless as the flight attendants were, they did point out empty overheads where passengers could store their cabin bags before resuming their “Sore… Sore…” slouch-fest.

The flight was 100% filled. By the time I reached the check in counter, the only window seats left on the port side was 38A – it is the last row so there was no recline. Couple that with the tight pitch, it was a very uncomfortable position to be in. Thankfully this flight was only 90 minutes normally.

1727H: Push back was almost 15 minutes behind schedule.

The miserable weather conditions weren’t easing up because of a tropical torrential downpour. The scenery outside began to play tricks with my mind as I started to wonder if we would crash. Or would the aircraft somehow skid on the runway? Or maybe I was about to experience one of their famous 737-900ER tail-scrapes? Would I be another number? I found myself making sure I had on a pair of respectable expensive underwear just in case my body was to be extracted by rescuers afterwards; I would still look damn good.

A sepia-hued visual image of a conversation I had with my colleague from the day before started to echo in my head, “Lion Air? You are very brave. What if they crash… crash… crash… crash……?”

Manual safety demonstration was done accompanied by a pre-recorded announcement. Every portion was demonstrated in Bahasa Indonesia followed immediately by very posh Thatcher-style English. Pre-recorded announcements once again reminded us, while we were taxiing, to have our window shades open and seats in the upright position as the cabin was darkened.

Post 5pm is a very busy period for the airport. It is the beginning of an evening bank of arrivals / departures stretching till way past midnight. Thus, there was a congestion in departure as we lined up behind a Tiger A320, waiting for our turn to… err… scrape our tails?

From push back to take off, it took us almost 20 minutes.

1750H: Take off

On climb to FL360, weather wasn’t optimal but it was better than being on the ground. After months of hot, dry weather, the monsoon finally arrived a few weeks ago with a vengeance.

Of course nothing happened and the take off proceeded uneventfully. Otherwise I would not be here typing this report. We were now chasing a Turkish A330-200 ahead of us also heading to Jakarta. As soon as the seatbelt sign was pinged off, I sat there eagerly waiting to see what was in store catering wise since there was no mention of a BOB.

My last experience with Lion, I was given a snack box that contained 2 buns and a mineral water.

Meanwhile, the flight attendants busied themselves with… to be honest, I wasn’t really sure. All five of them seemed to be walking up and down at different intervals of the flight back and forth, back and forth… It seriously reminded me of Pam Ann’s “touch galley, touch trolley, do a little skip and make signs which means absolutely nothing… touch galley, touch trolley…”

The curtain separating us from the empty Business Class was drawn. Despite being configured with a premier cabin, no booking option was available so perhaps that is why it was devoid of passengers?

As the flight prodded along, I looked down at my watch and thought, “If they are to serve any meals, they’d better get cracking! Not much time left…”

After almost an hour in the air, it finally dawned on me why Lion was cheaper than Air Asia and there was no mention of a BOB. Simply because there were no meals or drinks on this sector! I wished I knew about this as I hadn’t had anything to eat before I boarded. Poor I, Lion didn’t even give me a chance to breathe before I got buried in pangs of hunger. At least on Air Asia, I could stick my hands into the pleasure chest for some hot dogs, nasi lemak or cup noodles. I looked at my neighbour as his head morphed into a greasy, succulent, sultry looking, golden brown, crispy fried chicken thigh… YUM! Instinctively licking my lips like a pervert, I quickly looked away as his chubby fingers began to look like smoking grilled chipolatas.

I can actually hear certain members of the forum cringing at this thought (the no-food bit, not the chicken thigh). If you think about it, Lion is really a level below an LCC. God, I have never actually flown like that before when I have been deliberately deprived of something to eat. Lion has really taken the concept of Point A - B transport to another level.

Nevertheless, here I was with my face literally pressed against the window so not like I had much of a choice. It was best to just suck it up and try enjoying what remained of the flight.

Meanwhile, the Lion Lassies were still hurriedly going up and down the aisle parading their assets, opening and closing the overheads, flicking the curtain at the bulkhead going in and out, disappearing into the aft galley then re-appearing again… Cue; repeat cycle. They sure looked very busy for a flight that didn’t see the appearance of a catering cart. They moved about so urgently you would almost feel bad flagging them down if (god-forbid) you needed an aspirin.

1845H: Flight deck came on to greet us. We were soon leaving our cruising altitude of FL360 to begin our arrival and they ended their announcements with “cabin crew, prepare for arrival”. This was followed immediately with a pre-recorded announcement reminding all of us to have our seats upright, tray tables and footrests (footrests??) stowed, and window shades up. Gosh, has someone in Lion been sniffing about Singapore Airlines?

Since there were no meal items to clear and almost no rubbish to pick up (maybe Lion is on to something here), the cabin was secured in no time. No sooner were we all buckled in, flight attendants strapped to jump seats, cabin darkened and mood music serenading us to our fiery crash landing in Jakarta.

The city which appeared outside my window that evening was blanketed in a thick layer of smog.

I was looking out for domestic arrivals on the other parallel runway but it wasn’t happening tonight. It is actually a rather cool sight to have another aircraft in close proximity just outside your window on the same heading. I have experienced this a few times while landing in Jakarta so I make it a point to look out for it.

1915H: Touchdown!

Flare… Hello, flare… FLARE! We slammed down hard, bounced once and kissed terra firma again on Runway 25R. For a mere moment, my knuckles went white as I held back bowels from staining my branded underwear. Spoilers deployed with full reverse thrust screaming their hearts out brought us to an urgent slow down accompanied by brakes moaning and begging for the torture to stop.

Phew… I made it. Last thing I needed was for the wheels into burst in flames necessitating an evacuation. Nothing of that sort happened. We were on chox 5 minutes later.

1920H: Gate E4, local time 1820H. Cabin crew, disarm doors.

Since Turkish Airlines was just ahead of us in the same terminal, immigration was already choked full of a wide-body’s worth of passengers waiting to be processed. This is Jakarta, where the immigration officers savour every moment with your passport to ensure every passenger is thoroughly scrutinized, or at least they act the part. It was almost an hour before I finally got through.

Customs wasn’t an issue. My driver was already circling the driveway ramps outside due to the full parking lots and Friday night traffic chaos. Thus, there was no opportunity for me to grab a quick bite before I got picked up to join the rest of the cars jamming along the highway into the city. Needless to say, when I finally arrived at my destination in Pondok Indah 3 hours later, I was frail from hunger since my last meal was lunch. So weak I felt like I was just put through a Nazi torture regime in a concentration camp. I must have eaten 10 buckets of KFC that evening afterwards, I wasn’t sure.

Coming down the airport ramp, this is what greeted me all the way home. I was choosing between slitting my wrists and gassing myself to death at this point.

THE RETURN JOURNEY

PT Lion Mentari Airlines, aka Lion Air
Jakarta Soekarno Hatta Terminal 2E (CGK) – Singapore Changi Terminal 1 (SIN)
JT152
Boeing 737-9GPER (PK-LFP)
ETD: 0630H
ATD: 0640H
ETA: 0900H
ATA: 0915H
Flight time: 1 hr 35 min

22 March 2010

Here is a quick summary of the return flight.

CGK departure drop off, 0500H.

Look at Lion’s schedule to Singapore, see Garuda close by?

Nothing is opened this early in the morning.

D concourse

China Airlines CI 680 bound for HKG and TPE. Scheduled to depart after us, it ended up ahead of us in the taxi line because of our delayed pushback.

Looking back at D concourse, Singapore Airlines SQ 951 is just getting ready to depart as the first flight of the day back to Singapore.

Gate E4, here we go…

Garuda GA 724 to Perth at Gate E5.

This aircraft is configured with 100% economy seats. Compared to the previous aircraft which had 2 classes and 38 rows, this one only had 39 rows which probably explained the more comfortable pitch.

0640H: Pushback and taxi. Captain apologized for the delay due to a missing passenger who never turned up and his bags had to be removed from the cargo bay. I wonder what happened to him?

Take off, Runway 25R.

After takeoff, a right turn brought us on an opposite heading towards the coast.

Coasting out from Java.

Wings Air is a subsidiary of Lion. Flying is CHEAP? Hahahaha… ok.

Coasting into Sumatra.

Amongst all the lifeless looking Lion Lassies, Nur Latifah was the saving grace for that morning.

Pitch was much more bearable on this aircraft.

We begin out gradual descend over the Riau archipelago.

Exiting the Riau archipelago, we are still over Indonesian airspace when Singapore comes into sight in the horizon.

Almost there, runway 02L.

Roni… this one is for you… AGAIN!

0815H: on chox, local time 0915H.

Now observe the photo above, the flight attendant at the end of the aisle has her arm reaching for the “crew call” button on the overhead service console. I am always one of the last to leave the aircraft so I could have an opportunity to take some cabin shots. Whenever I raised my arms to shoot, “PING” the chime went off.

“PING! PING! PING! PINGPINGPINGPINGPING!!!!!!!!!”

I didn’t realize it initially, but it later dawned on me that I got busted. When I reached the door, the flight attendant politely said photography was not allowed in the cabin. At first when she spoke Bahasa Indonesia, I feigned ignorance but she continued in English and asked that I show her my camera and proof that I would delete the photographs. My heart sank as there was nothing BUT cabin shots in there. I quickly deleted a few shots in front of her and retreated with embarrassment with the tail between my legs. So much for a lifeless Lion Lassie – which belies a bite so lethal it would make you blush. I walked back into Changi Airport with my cheeks flushed and ears hot from that encounter.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Lion’s initial growth spurt has placed them as the largest privately owned airline in Indonesia. In terms of size, they rank second behind national carrier, Garuda. Despite a spotty reputation, the top honchos know they are catering to an immense demand for air travel in the world’s largest archipelago and the region.

ONE STEP FORWARD…

As much as we love to ridicule Lion, one cannot ignore the advancements they have made in their attempts to improve. Comparing my present experience with the one a few years back, perhaps they have matured into an airline that is more safety conscious – or at least they seem so! There were many safety announcements (pre-recorded) throughout the flight to a point I lost count. In fact, there was even a pre-recorded announcement about how removing a life jacket from the aircraft is a criminal offence – it was played in two languages. I wonder if this [the life jacket theft] occurred regularly in the past. From the myriad of on-cue cockpit and cabin announcements, there is a sense of standardization which was sorely missing from my previous chaotic experience. I hate to admit it, but Lion has indeed moved ahead.

TWO STEPS BACK…

I was rather measured in my expectations of how service was going to be like. Thus, I wasn’t taken aback by the lifeless Lion Lassies. Lion still has a long way to go before they can even dream of matching up to Garuda in terms of personal grooming for the flight attendants. A kebaya can look classy but it doesn’t take much for one wrong choice of fabric for the whole attire to become tacky. The ones they wore seriously looks like they got the fabric off the rack at Spotlight. The complicated embroidery trimmings looked hard to maintain and easily frayed after several washes. It screamed “cheap” and wasn’t very flattering trying to portray a professional image.

And the hairdo with all these French twists. The flight attendants spent a lot of time in-flight trying to keep their hair in place to a point I think they just gave up. You do not realize how untidy they look until you arrive in Jakarta and there happens to be a team of Garuda flight attendants leaving their aircraft after working similar regional turn-arounds like the Lion Lassies. The difference is night and day.

The Garuda Giselle stands up straight and takes confident steps with every click of her heels, make up and hairdo still fresh and intact. Sling bag on the right, roller bag on the left, off they go walking into the horizon smiling at another labourious but fruitful workday.

Comparatively, the Lion Lassie slouches and drags her feet towards the immigration counters and permeates an “I just want to get out of here” aura with their hair in various states of undo. Not to mention a whole array of tired looking faces passing you by like a funeral possession, as you line up waiting for your passport to be chopped. Oh Lion Lassies, why do you look like an entire team of rugby players just felt you up? On so many levels, the soft product still needs to be tweaked several times over.

Standard of spoken English was poor (I did have to resort to Bahasa Indonesia on several occasions) but I have to give credit when it is due – the Lion Lassies did respond to call buttons very quickly.

While the aircraft was new and clean, I can only hope maintenance isn’t an issue. It wasn’t the most comfortable ride I have had but seeing how it was only a short hop between Jakarta and Singapore; I could do Lion again without hesitation for my next trip down there. Only now, I would make sure the tummy is taken care of before boarding.

Thanks for the report. Always a pleasure to read something from you. You're hilarious!!

Did you try using the Invocation Card? Is it there in case of accident to invoke deitic intervention? Could you invoke food? Obviously not.

Nice photos, especially of the flight home. The terminal at Jakarta looks differently tropical in comparison to your now standard steel and glass job.

Could it be a business opportunity in the offing? Some enterprising passenger who smuggles a tray of food on board waltzing down the aisle singing "Curry puffs. Curry puffs." (Visions of a train ride between Singapore and KL here).

Another great one from your Ryan!!!!!!
I'm a great fan of these trip reports from you. Did they even do a bevergae service on the 90 minute flight? What is Lion Air a US carrier based in Indonesia, wait at the very least the US carrier would have sold the water-lol. Hey but at least you survived, and you can't beat the price you got for the ticket- even if that means going into a diabetic shock. What is the purpose of the prayer card, is it to pray you make it to your destination alive? Never seen one of those before on any other carrier. Were are you off to next?

Hi Ryan,

very entertaining report with many great pictures - was a pleasure to read. I guess you won't be surprised to hear that your review didn't increase my desire to fly Lion Air...

What I find amazing is the Business Class section on the first plane: oversized red leather seats and minimal legroom!

These are 2 different 777's:

SIN will continue to DPS
KUL will continue to CGK

So, the one at CGK was the one ex KUL

Yeah, I thought the Lion Lassies were rather militant about me not taking photos in the cabin. But then again, never argue with the cabin crew. If they say you have to remove your shirt, just do it first and talk about it later.

Could it be a business opportunity in the offing? Some enterprising passenger who smuggles a tray of food on board waltzing down the aisle singing "Curry puffs. Curry puffs." (Visions of a train ride between Singapore and KL here).

Waltzing? You are talking about something very clandestine here and it has to be done quietly. "Psst... you want a curry puff?"... and you open up your trenchcoat with packets of puffs hanging about underneath. On the right you have sardine puffs, and the left potato puffs.

Quoting chepos (Reply 4):

More Jakarta commutes only, unfortunately. Unless it is something interesting like Lion, it is unlikely i would be writing about it.

At the end, I still don't understand why the F/A is running up and down? Did you find out, finally? gym?

Well, they only time I saw them actually doing something is when they were giving out disembarkation cards. otherwise they were just doing what I described, touch galley, touch bulkhead (since there is no trolley).

Have Lion Air Pilots been training at the Ryanair Royal Academy of Landings? it certainly sound like one of the typical landings I have experienced whilst flying FR.

Fast... fast... cut throttles...WHAM!... vroooooooooooooooooooooooomm.....eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeehhhhh...wooaamm woooaaammm.... (cue "another ontime arrival" fanfare)

Well done, another entertaining TR!

Few thoguhts:

Quoting Ryanair!!! (Thread starter):

Quoting Ryanair!!! (Thread starter):
So why did I come back to this airline which I walked away swearing never again in 2004? Perhaps a part of me was very curious about the progress (or lack of) since then. Or maybe I was just yearning for some drama on my frequent Jakarta commute? But then again, the reason could be as simple as this; they are cheaper than Air Asia.

The answer to all those questions lies here ==>

Quoting Ryanair!!! (Thread starter):
Done… All in USD 69.00 return fare with 20kg check in allowance thrown in. E-ticket was dot-matrix printed on a blank piece of paper. There was nothing pompous, no company letterhead, very simple.

You saved on so many SGD!!!

Quoting Ryanair!!! (Thread starter):
The ground handler has gone through a major rebranding and now their new purple / black uniforms make their staff look like cheerleaders in a high school sports event.

sheesh, I liked those sky blue blazers.

That can be debated :P.

LOL! Nah there was no mention of the Invocation card but this has been one of the unique features of the airline since day one. It gives an interesting insight into the political climate of the Republic of Indonesia as well because those religions depicted are the officially sanctioned ones.

Well, the domestic set up is slightly different from their international flights as I recall getting a snack box. I still have a picture of it if you want, I can share it here. Otherwise an international flight is probably more expensive to operate and hence to keep the cost of the ticket down, they cut whatever they can to make themselves more competitve against the likes of Air Asia. Don't forget SIN-CGK is one of the BUSIEST routes in Asia and the competition is intense. There are no less that 10 airlines at the last count flying back and forth between these two cities. Just between Garuda and Singapore Airlines alone, there are already about 14 flights daily. 4 daily flights each from Valuair, Lion and Air Asia, one daily flight each from TR, LH, TK, EK, QR and SJ. Add them up together and you get an idea of the sheer amount of traffic everyday.

Secondly IIRC TK does not have 5th freedom rights between SIN and CGK, so TK is out of the option as well.

Hi Ryanair (FR?),

I'm growing more and more fond of your sense of humor and style of writing, thanks for this report, very much enjoyed here now that I finally found some time to read it through.

These Indonesian carriers are funny - I guess that's what airline deregulation does to you. Is Adam Air still flying, I think that was my favorite? Not that I'd ever set a foot on their plane, no no, I'm not that suicidal.

I find it weird that with so many flight attendants and one and half hours of flight time they didn't have any BOB service - they are missing a revenue stream here. With those kind of fares they must fill the plane to the brim to break even, methinks.

Hey Ryan!

Very 'Sore' for arriving at your trip report with the predictable punctuality of a BG flight.   I needed the time to sit down and give this report the attention it deserved, which I just didn't have these last few days until now.... Sore again! After all, Lion Air had been one of those unforgettable experiences for me too, and I'd been keen and apprehensive (probably in equal measure) to try them again. But I haven't yet.

When I flew them way not so many years back during their MD80 phase, our supposedly KUL-CGK nonstop flight (on an MD82) was "diverted" to SUB because the majority of passengers were transferring onto SUB - the airline being nice enough to save them a domestic connection! Though I actually didn't mind it as I'd get to see another airport, it felt more than a little strange when even the cabin crew weren't sure if the plane would be flying on to CGK. In the end, we did, but not without another bit of drama unfolding en route. SUB being the first port of call, CGK passengers (there were only about 10 of us onwards) had to clear immigration there - after which, we were asked to wait in a holding lounge. Only problem was everyone at Lion forgot about us. The MD82 had probably been cleared to leave and the doors already closed when a ground staffer suddenly realizes the CGK transit passengers still in the waiting hall! We were quickly rushed to the tarmac, the plane doors reopened and unceremoniously bundled aboard! So you see, your TR really makes Lion Air look a lot more sober these days

Thanks for providing the insight; the pictures are excellent too. I am certain I will try them - someday.

Quoting Ryanair!!! (Thread starter):
Meanwhile, the flight attendants busied themselves with… to be honest, I wasn’t really sure. All five of them seemed to be walking up and down at different intervals of the flight back and forth, back and forth… It seriously reminded me of Pam Ann’s “touch galley, touch trolley, do a little skip and make signs which means absolutely nothing… touch galley, touch trolley…

LOL That seems to be quite a contrast to my earlier experience. I was quite impressed when the crew moved down the aisle helping almost every passenger fill in his/her landing card for Indonesia!

Quoting Ryanair!!! (Thread starter):
Despite being configured with a premier cabin, no booking option was available so perhaps that is why it was devoid of passengers?

Wow, that makes no sense at all.

Quoting Ryanair!!! (Thread starter):
After almost an hour in the air, it finally dawned on me why Lion was cheaper than Air Asia and there was no mention of a BOB. Simply because there were no meals or drinks on this sector!

That's unexpected too: wow you're right it's one level below AirAsia. Surely the lack of a BOB is a lost opportunity though.

Quoting Ryanair!!! (Thread starter):
They sure looked very busy for a flight that didn’t see the appearance of a catering cart.

All this walking up and down Boeing's longest baby must surely be very tiring - no wonder they look so fatigued.

LOL Looks the the perfect trip report candidate for you next!

Quoting Ryanair!!! (Reply 1):

Now, that's not very nice... could put me off flying with an airline that does that to me.

Great stuff, looking forward to more

When I flew them way not so many years back during their MD80 phase, ...

Good heavens. Now that would have made a fantastic trip report! I think I still have a Lion MD80 report buried somewhere in the archives. What was meant to be a simple DPS-CGK flight stretched out into an all night delayed affair. How an airline handles their passengers during a delay is really telling - Lion didn't fare to well there.

Quoting airpearl (Reply 20):
LOL That seems to be quite a contrast to my earlier experience. I was quite impressed when the crew moved down the aisle helping almost every passenger fill in his/her landing card for Indonesia!

I observe that airlines like Air Asia, Lion etc are choice carriers fro Tenaga Kerja Indonesia (TKI) traffic. TKI are your migrant workers / labourers. They are normally very obvious because they wear jackets bearing the logo of the agency moving them. Makes for easy indentification, I guess especially upon arrival at destination. Most of them are illiterate and hence the need to help them fill up disembarkation cards. I myself have helped a few who were seated next to me on my flights back and forth from Jakarta. Their faces are nervous, they look lost... Quite a sad sight really. Many of them have never seen what was outside their villages, let alone set foot on a plane!

Quoting airpearl (Reply 20):
Wow, that makes no sense at all.

Lion does only offer YCL (and their sub classes) between SIN and CGK. So happens they sent a 2-class configured plane to SIn that evening. They used to offer JCL a few years ago because I remember going to the lounge and Lion's logo was there. Although if it were up to me, I would have tried to sell some upgrades to the passengers checking in.

Quoting BNE (Reply 21):

Say what; Lionair need to go back and study the Ryanair model again; sell; sell; sell at every opportunity.

I guess buying the BOB items from the suppliers would have added cost to the operations already. So maybe this is where the "savings" mattered?

Hi Ryanair,

Just as I had expected after I got up and found your TR in the cold morning in Holland, I again experienced an intensive belly workout.
I just love the way you present your flying experience every time.

“PING! PING!

That's disgusting. I really hate it. It reminds me on my last experience with Vueling. Such action just makes you feel really unwanted and criminal like.
As I perused your report, I thought that JT would have made their rules regarding photography less rigid (A chap of Indoflyer had got troubles about it). Well, they didn't!

Many thanks for the efforts. Just keep on coming.

Well they had ambitious plans for CGK-CCU-AUH time and time again. We have yet to see them here!

Thanks a lot for sharing this!
