Hi,

It has been a while already since I posted my last report. This one is quite a few weeks ago now, without any flying in between actually. I had a cancelled trip to IST in April, caused by the volcanic ashes over European airspaces. I was able to rebook until later this summer, so I still will have the opportunity to go at another date.
The report featured here is another Italy bound run, catching 4 flights on 1 day, including a new airline for me. And a good amount of miles on the card again.

Booking was done quite some months in advance and secured a good fare. Less then 50 Euro per leg, not bad at all.

This time I preferred not to leave on the first flight that day, so opted to book the second LH-MUC bound flight, operated by CRJ-900 nowadays. It just changed from Embraer 195 with the start of the summer schedule. Online seatselection was odd again, being the first to check-in, but no seats available in the forward rows. I had to take a seat near the engines instead. For sure that would be more noisy for me, but it does the trick with my pair of noise-cancelling earplugs and some good music.

Amsterdam Airport (yes, it was very quiet at that moment)

Arrived at the airport 50 minutes before my flight and quickly went through the security check, using my homeprinted boarding pass. Assigned gate B17, almost usual for these flights. A good amount of people at the gate area, resulting in about 80% load on this service.

Boarding was smooth, and I found a selection of some newspapers at the entrance of the plane. The crew greeted friendly and evernybody was seated quickly. Good for me was that the seat next to me remained empty. We left on time and a few minutes taxiing to runway 24 for takeoff. The departure offered some nice views outside, since the weather was very good that day.

Service was standard LH during cruise, I was offered a sandwich, one coffee and an orange juice. Not bad at all, for a flight of this duration. For the rest this was another not so spectacular flight, but a smooth ride and enjoyable views outside.

Isn’t it beautiful up there?

Approaching MUC

Landing was ontime on runway 08L, so taxi-time was quite short to reach the commuter-apron at MUC. One large bus was already standby for the nice ride to the terminal. For some reason this always works fluently at MUC, no delays etc. This airport is my favourite in Europe, since everything is or seems to be very organised. The German way I would say!

A little of an hour now to get on my onward connection. Gate G61, a busgate again. It’s near the little Allianz-Arena. Free coffee/tea facilities, and I like these new machines. Also Latte Machiato, hot chocolate, cappuccino etc. is now available. Plus, a wide selection of newspapers and magazines. I always like to read a bit in Bild Magazine. By far the most enjoyable German journalism included, with always interesting type of ‘news’.

MUC terminal / busgate area

But where is that mentioned German ‘pünktlichkeit’ now?! No gate agent assigned, and the departure time is coming closer.
Luckily another gate agent noticed this we were rushed into a bus at just 15 minutes before our departure time. Information at the drivers place tells me a load of 64 passengers, and our remote position 310 on the apron again. A quick drive brought us at another new entry for me; a beautiful Italian Embrear 195 of Air Dolomiti!

Delivered new to this airline in March 2009. My second ride on an Emb-195.

Boarding I-ADJN

Boarding I-ADJN. Great colours with the sunny weather!

Boarding completed soon, via forward and rear entrances. Last 3 rows were not in use due weight and balance reasons. When boarding completed, 1 female passenger behaved strange, confused talking, and having trouble with 3 pieces of handluggage. Then the flight attendant started discussion and re-seated her to the row in front of me. She still didn’t put her luggage in the overhead bin, so another male passenger did without asking. It was a funny observation. When it got more calm, this passenger went to the lavatory, until the flight attendant had to knock on the door to get her out, since we started taxiing.

Seats on Air Dolomiti’s Embraer 195

Safety demo on this flight was done manual, and I must say that the crew behaved very professionally doing their checks. During taxiing some interesting other visitors on the ground, including quite some British charters for a football match, a Yemenia Government Boeing 747-SP and the first Air Berlin > Corendon Airlines B738 (still D-registered at that time). Takeoff followed from runway 08R.

Block-Out. More Air Dolomiti on the right (ATR aircraft)

Something nice from Yemen.

Airborne! Something military below us on the right. It’s Erding Airbase

Leaving MUC behind us…

Just after takeoff the lady in front of me went hysterical again, now she wanted to change to the left to make a picture of a church. The male passenger on the left got her camera and had to make pictures for her, she said. It was a strange lady, I can just conclude. For the rest of the flight she behaved mostly calm, but sometimes talked ‘with herself’.

Views on the Alps were not particularly good this time, mostly cloudy. Also weather in Northern Italy was not really ‘Italian’ to be honest. Service on the flight was a carton snackbox, containing a sandwich, a cookie and water. An additional drink was served also.

Enroute…

And a snackbox for ‘lunch’

Cabin view enroute with Air Dolomiti

Approaching Bologna

Landing at BLQ

Landing at BLQ was at runway 12, and deboarding the plane onto the apron. A bus was for the last leg to the arrivals hall.

Goodbye I-ADJN (taken from the bus)

My stay at BLQ lasted a few hours, and since I ‘ve been to the city before during a holiday in Italy a few years ago, I didn’t bother to take the bus downtown. I rather stayed in the upstairs bar area, with a good pasta meal, and a window seat. I did some spotting during these hours, and when there was no traffic, I enjoyed reading by ebook. Staff in the restaurant was friendly and let me stay all the time, even watched my camera when I got to the bar again to grab a cappuccino. Photography is fine also, but windows tend to be a bit dirty here. Still it works out fine if you pay some attention.

My aircraft arriving at BLQ. It will take me back to MUC. Time to leave the observation area…

The flight back was announced on time. Security at BLQ takes a minute only and staff is friendly also. It seems not to strict over here. Gate 11 was assigned for the flight, and my travels at BLQ tell me that the LH flights always have gate 11 at this airport. It’s in the left corner of the small departure lounge, far away from the FR flights (they are in the righthand side after security). Only limited shops, very limited to say at least, and 1 place to buy some last minute snacks or grab an Espresso.

Departure lounge at BLQ (secure area)

The gate area seemed busy. Lots of Asian travellers, continuing to China and Japan I suppose. I guess this would be a good feed for the new NH route to/from MUC. Boarding started at 16:45L, almost 30 minutes to go. Everybody in one bus. Completely full, like sardines in a can.

Boarding another Embraer 195

Lucky me! Another new entry for the log. Another Embraer 195, third flight on type for me. This aircraft was delivered factory fresh to Air Dolomiti in February 2009.

I took the same seat again as my inbound flight, and next to me remained empty again. Load was nearly 95%, not bad at all. We left a bit late, since it took a while till everybody was seated. Taxiing was short at the little airport, taking off from runway 12 again. Good views on the city and a surrounding areas.

Off we go! Bologna city on the right

Some clouds passing by

And something to eat…

During the flight I was served a bag of ‘Crusketti’ snackbites and a cookie, plus a drink. The flight was calm, and over Austria it got interesting when I noticed the airport of Innsbruck below. Also the sky was clearing up, giving very interesting views and shadows with the clouds.

Crossing the Alps once again

Famous Innsbruck Airport visible below

Impressive shadow of the cloud

Short finals at MUC

Landing was on runway 26R, parking on the remote apron again in between all the other commuter aircraft. We arrived just on time, and I was bussed to the terminal once again here. Ready to make a short connection for my last leg to AMS.

Goodbye I-ADJL

The gate for the last flight was G32. It was packed when I got there, and I requested a seat change more to the front (the selfservice kiosk were not allowing seat changes anymore so close before departure). But the lady told this flight was overbooked and all seats were taken. I told her to volunteer to offload in case it was needed, and she made a note at my name. In the end this was not needed apparently, and we all went on the bus.
The infoscreen at the driver told me the parking position was 327W on the remote apron again. And, I noticed on that screen the registration of my plane, being another new entry for the log.

My third flight on the –900 series, but done numerous more when the –700 is included. It’s a pleasant aircraft, especially at the front. But on todays flight, it was packed. With all seats taken, no chance to store my camerabag above me. I started reading my ebook already before block-out. This got attention by my female seatmate, a American/Dutch lady. She thought I was having the new iPad. But I didn’t (it’s not even for sale in Holland yet), but this was the start of an endless conversation which lasted until we left the plane in AMS. We talked about so many things, hobbies, photography (we share that hobby) and work (we have similar management and company culture, always point of discussions).

All I noticed is we took off from runway 26R and during the calm flight we got a drink and sandwich. It was with some creamcheese. Not bad actually.

Taking off from MUC

Reaching high altitudes, an impressive CB cloud

During approach we enjoyed special views on a very dark cloudline moving over the airport area with quite some rain also. This was the only rain over the Netherlands at that time. Quite a sight, when we approached for runway 18R, yes, the far-away ‘Polderbaan’. Taxiing was speeded up a bit, and took 11 minutes until we reached the stand.

Dark clouds and gusty conditions on approach to runway 18R

Overall, another successful flights on LH and partner Air Dolomiti. I really like this Italian airline. The interior is very nice on the Embraers, nice cabin colours and very friendly crews. And the Embraer itself is a great aircraft to fly on. I am surprised myself how many flight I had on this type in the last few months.

Thanks for reading and your replies. It’s always appreciated to hear from you. And stay tuned, volcanic ashclouds permitting, next flights are 1 day away from now.

Regards,
Eric

Hi Eric,

great report with high-quality pictures! Air Dolomiti is an excellent regional carrier, beating other LH family members and most similar airlines.

Come on, LH should ban this "newspaper" from the gate area.

Sounds good. Did you try the coffee?

Service looks pretty good. How do you compare the CR9 to the E95?

Hi Eric!

Thanks for sharing, that was an enjoyable read. I'm sorry you got disappointed by Italy's weather, spring this year seems to have disappeared. Last weekend I missed an antique car fair because of snow over 1000 meters, and that is supposed to be May!

Anyway, I have a few question about Air Dolomiti, since you've flown it: do you recommend it? how's the in-flight service and the ride? I'm planning a trip to Hungary and I was thinking to add some pepper to this otherwise average flight by stopping in MUC and using Air Dolomiti and Augsburg.

Weird passengers we all have to deal with lol...

Hi Eric,

Nice to see another exciting report of yours. Again, you managed to have another ride with E-jet....

Hi Eric,

Yet again another very nicely presented report of some intra-Europe. What a shame you didn't get to Istanbul though as I think you capture the city quite well thinking back to the last pictures IIRC.

Quoting airbuseric (Thread starter):
During approach we enjoyed special views on a very dark cloudline moving over the airport area with quite some rain also.

This is very ominous and exciting. It makes for a wonderful photo - shame about the light/ bumpiness.

Quoting airbuseric (Thread starter):
far away from the FR flights (they are in the righthand side after security)

Yes - keep the hoypoloy off to the side of the airport! This always seems to happen where FR exist amongst legacy carriers. Probably just so they can be 'seen' to be demanding less services from the airport to justify varying fees?

Quoting airbuseric (Thread starter):
My stay at BLQ lasted a few hours, and since I ‘ve been to the city before during a holiday in Italy a few years ago, I didn’t bother to take the bus downtown

Great. Glad to see this report as I am heading to BLQ in not a week which I am awfully excited about. Sadly just your standard FR job though. Is the city good, I have read its a bit of a culinary hot-spot... and how is access? If I have time I may consider walking from town back to the airport.

Did you consider coming back via another airport or where singles pricey?

Hoi, Eric,

another well done story and really good pictures, you´re the professional, I know.

A good compilation of aircraft, both the CRJ9 and also the E195 not the usual Airbus/Boeing stuff.

That cloud above AMS looks indeed scary, no turbulences around?.

How do you compare the CR9 to the E95?

E95 is more comfortable to fly in general, more space for the passenger. But I like the CR7/CR9 a lot actually. LH offers good legroom at most rows, and upfront the CRJ's are very, very quiet, even during takeoff.

Quoting vandenheuvel (Reply 3):

I would say, take EN and Augsburg is nice but less good. You might have a good view on the Alps at lower altitudes heading to MUC also, when weather is good. Service is very friendly and they service free food/drinks. The snackbox is really far above average European standards, especially on such a short flight.

Is the city good, I have read its a bit of a culinary hot-spot... and how is access? If I have time I may consider walking from town back to the airport.

It's a university town. Lot's of students, quite some bars and terraces around the city. Shopping is nice too, interesting galleries and streetview overthere. But it would be best, also for the picture taking, when you have lots of sunshine. Then the colours in this city make your visit a success.
Walking back? That's a bit far. Even 'impossible' maybe. I did not see a possibility to leave the airport by foot, since I wanted to make some pictures along the fence. I guess you have to take the direct bus running between downtown and the airport.

Quoting lukeyboy95 (Reply 7):
Did you consider coming back via another airport or where singles pricey?

I preferred the Star Alliance, to get mileage and to make up some status this year. Didn't check for one-ways actually.

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Reply 8):

It was a but shaky indeed. Hence the blurry pics   But even more interesting I think.

Hi Eric,

Looks like another great day trip to have some pasta in Italy - the highlight most definitely being EN and the E195 - twice! I should really try to get some flights on Air Dolomiti, I've fancied them for quite some time now. Too bad the 146s are gone, I kinda like those little bumblebees.

Actually when I departed from there last summer on FR the LH 737 to FRA had a gate right next to us - maybe they have changed it due to some complaints!

Hi Eric,

Nice report, could lunch in Italy become a regular fixture?

The E195 looks really nice in the Air Dolomiti livery. Too bad about that funny woman on board. The crew must curse people like that. Still, a good reaction by the gentleman in the window seat taking the picture for her!

The free tea/coffee you mention at MUC, is that available to all passengers?

You took some stunning photos again, I really like the one of INN and those threatening clouds on approach into AMS.

Happy flying

I would expect QR using LH lounges, but I am not so sure about it.

I'm at LHR right now, and better stay where I am (BA First Galleries)

Beautiful! Are you flying BA F somewhere?

The free tea/coffee you mention at MUC, is that available to all passengers?

All passengers in the Lufthansa (and *A and some other partners) terminal 2 - most of the waiting areas there have these stands with lots of newspapers (mainly Deutsch, though) and many coffee machines.

Hey Eric, terrific pictures! I really should get myself on one of those junglejets, the only one in my log is an ERJ135. I've worked quite a few times with the DACKI / C, I'm starting to become a CR9 fan.

Thanks for sharing and keep up the good work,

Martijn

I think so too! Top quality for the Star Alliance I would say...

Well, certain Star Alliance carriers with lousy service could learn a lesson from EN.

Good afternoon Eric, a nice and interesting report from you as always!

You seem to have had some good flights there on some interesting types. Both the CR9 and E95 look like interesting aircraft types, that I'm yet to fly on, perhaps I should try them out soon.

The in-flight service provided seemed very generous, especially on the LH flights. With all my rail travel done during the past months, I've even forgot that they serve food on planes, haha

Also the pics were great, especially the fisheye, I want to see more of it!

Thanks for sharing

Hi Eric,

Great report and really beautiful photos. Good to hear that you had an enjoyable day-trip to Italy. Air Dolomiti looks very nice - unfortunately I haven't tried them out until now.

Hi Eric,

A very nice read, really enjoyed your day of flying, wish I could have joined you!

Quoting airbuseric (Thread starter):
LH-MUC bound flight, operated by CRJ-900 nowadays. It just changed from Embraer 195 with the start of the summer schedule

- Shame, but with 2 EMB 195's to follow, no loss.

Quoting airbuseric (Thread starter):
Good for me was that the seat next to me remained empty

- Always a pleasure
Quoting airbuseric (Thread starter):
a beautiful Italian Embrear 195 of Air Dolomiti!

- Indeed, good looking bird in these colours.

Quoting airbuseric (Thread starter):
Just after takeoff the lady in front of me went hysterical again, now she wanted to change to the left to make a picture of a church. The male passenger on the left got her camera and had to make pictures for her, she said. It was a strange lady, I can just conclude. For the rest of the flight she behaved mostly calm, but sometimes talked ‘with herself’.

- Nutter!

Quoting airbuseric (Thread starter):
Staff in the restaurant was friendly and let me stay all the time, even watched my camera when I got to the bar again to grab a cappuccino

- Nice of them!

Quoting airbuseric (Thread starter):
My stay at BLQ lasted a few hours, and since I ‘ve been to the city before during a holiday in Italy a few years ago, I didn’t bother to take the bus downtown. I rather stayed in the upstairs bar area, with a good pasta meal, and a window seat. I did some spotting during these hours

- What are the traffic levels like?

Quoting airbuseric (Thread starter):
I took the same seat again as my inbound flight, and next to me remained empty again. Load was nearly 95%, not bad at all

- Seems you are on a roll with these empty seats.

Quoting airbuseric (Thread starter):
I noticed on that screen the registration of my plane, being another new entry for the log.

- Result, 4 in a row!

Good stuff Eric, looking forward to catching up on July 12th!

Cheers

Mark

Hi all, thank you so much for your latest amount of replies. Sorry for my late reaction/reply on you. I had to travel in between...

Quoting DunaA320 (Reply 11):
I'm still yet to fly on these CRJ's and E-Jets and it's something I hope to do real soon.

Hi Matt, this combo isn't too difficult to book on for reasonable prices as well. I would say, go for it
Quoting lukeyboy95 (Reply 12):
I will fly there in August 22nd but only on EZY. It seems to be getting alot of visitors with the city of culture thing.

Interesting, since EZY to Istanbul has not been reported yet I think. You fly to SAW, the 'Asian' airport of the city?

Quoting FlyingFinn76 (Reply 13):
the highlight most definitely being EN and the E195 - twice! I should really try to get some flights on Air Dolomiti, I've fancied them for quite some time now.

The highlight for me also, for sure.

Quoting FlyingFinn76 (Reply 13):
What was her problem? Was she German or Italian? Or Dutch or Finnish by any chance?

Don't know about her problem, probally some mental illness. But anyhow, I guess she must be Finnish    haha

Quoting FlyingFinn76 (Reply 13):
Actually when I departed from there last summer on FR the LH 737 to FRA had a gate right next to us - maybe they have changed it due to some complaints!

I must admit, once I saw a B737 parked next to the FR aircraft, but gate 11 used. Bused to the aircraft again. But indeed, gate areas around FR flights are usually busy and a mess. LH is a bit more organised, also the type of traveller it seems.

Quoting FlyingFinn76 (Reply 13):
Nice picture of the IJ canal and Amsterdam - great lighting conditions!

Good guess   It's the 'Northsea Canal' to be precise. The IJ canal is closer to the city.

Quoting FlyingFinn76 (Reply 13):
So what happened? Did you make it further than Heathrow?

Check it out, finished my report last night (this morning). Anyway, most people slept already when I finished
Quoting Infodesk (Reply 15):
Nice report, could lunch in Italy become a regular fixture?

Hannah, if I only can wish I could.

Quoting Infodesk (Reply 15):
Too bad about that funny woman on board. The crew must curse people like that. Still, a good reaction by the gentleman in the window seat taking the picture for her!

They all treated her with repect, and in a very professional manner. Of course crew is trained for such persons, and they probably see such people more often on board. The other passenger was indeed very kind and assisting to her. And for me, I had a nice show to watch also hehe.

Quoting Infodesk (Reply 15):
The free tea/coffee you mention at MUC, is that available to all passengers?

Exactly as mentioned by FlyingFinn76, it is indeed.

Quoting akhmad (Reply 16):

Suryo, I wish I did. But the lounge visit was a nice F experience already.

Quoting CrimsonNL (Reply 18):

Nice catch anyway. The ERJ135 is not around too much. Logged only once the ERJ135, and somehow still miss the ERJ145. Also the 175 missing, but hope to catch that up later this year.

Quoting CrimsonNL (Reply 18):
I've worked quite a few times with the DACKI / C, I'm starting to become a CR9 fan.

Good to hear. The larger CRJ's are not bad at all I think. btw, I think I saw you walking last week, when you left the security gate next to the MP building. I was in the staff bus.

Quoting PlaneHunter (Reply 19):
Well, certain Star Alliance carriers with lousy service could learn a lesson from EN.

For sure EN could be a welcome teacher here.

Quoting LH4116 (Reply 20):
Both the CR9 and E95 look like interesting aircraft types, that I'm yet to fly on, perhaps I should try them out soon.

Hi Jonas; it seems you've some flights to do on LH also in the future. The easiest way to get on those machines!

Quoting LH4116 (Reply 20):
With all my rail travel done during the past months, I've even forgot that they serve food on planes, haha

Railtravel is always nice I think. But often, meals on planes are better if you've to compare the business class with train 1st class experience. The groudservice / lougne / fasttrack etc. makes flying a winner here when it comes to service.

Quoting Contact Air (Reply 21):
Air Dolomiti looks very nice - unfortunately I haven't tried them out until now.

It seems you've some Italy travels ahead on your planning now
Quoting ba319-131 (Reply 22):
- What are the traffic levels like?

Yes, I promised you to tell more about that. Expect aircraft every 5-10 minutes. Quite some Italian stuff. Take also your book, and you can have an interesting day. But it's not that busy compared to e.g. BRU/VIE/DUS to compare,

Thanks again,
Regards,

Eric
