A while back fellow Anetter Airbuseric suggested we do a trip on the B757 as they are being phased out by BA. We also wanted to check out the BA F class lounge at LHR. So we chose dates we could both make and booked our flights. Due to the BA Gold card we could pre reserve exit row seats at the time of booking. Eric was to fly AMS-LHR and I was to fly DUB-LHR to meet at LHR T3. We would fly LHR-BCN together before parting company and Eric flying back to AMS and I flying back to DUB with Aer Lingus. The day before we were due to fly we were anxious about the ash cloud , we decided to go to London anyway and see what happened. Eric had an emergency plan to get back to AMS and I had the option of buying a oneway back to DUB.

DATE: 12/MAY/2010
AIRLINE: BRITISH AIRWAYS
FLIGHT: BA480
ROUTE: LHR-BCN
CLASS: EURO TRAVELLER
A/C : BOEING 757
SEAT: 33F
REG: G-CPES

I had arrived from DUB on BMI :

British Midland International New Economy Extra (by oa260 May 13 2010 in Trip Reports)

I went from Terminal 1 to Terminal 3 not using the flight connections as I find it quicker the landside way. I arrived at T3 and went to the BA desk to see if flight was showing as operating . Eric and I had checked in online the day before and we selected different seats to get better photos. On the way I took a look at the demolition of Terminal 2 , very sad.

I proceeded through to Fast Track which was a welcome bonus as the normal ques were quite long.

Eric was sitting outside Harrods and we recognised eachother right away. We then decided to go straight to the BA Lounge.

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/BA%20757/038_800x600.jpg

We entered the lounge and Eric had his professional camera which the lounge agent commented on ''I dont think you will find that much interesting to photograph in here ''. We smiled and then the lounge agent and Eric talked cameras as they are both into photography. I stood hiding my pocket Sony Cybershot LOL...

First impressions of the First Class lounge ''very nice''.

Time for breakfast

A lady came and took our order.

I was looking over from where we were sitting and noticed this :

The time in the lounge went by so fast and soon it was time to go to the boarding gate passing this MS B777.

Boarding by bus and not very organised. A few seat changes at the the gate and they said there had been an aircraft change. We paniced a bit but turned out it was still a B757 so at some point before we booked it must have been an A320 etc.. Panic over .

Take off was powerful and interesting .

Soon after the free drinks and snack service commenced.

The flight passed quickly. I asked if they had any B787 models which I had seen in anothe inflight magazine at GLA B lounge some weeks back but they didnt. I did however buy a Breo watch which was great value. The crew were chatty and friendly.

Soon we commenced our decent into BCN .

Eric wanted to get into the cockpit and the crew obliged. I wasnt that interested ( I know shame on me )   I waited outside on the air bridge and after a few minutes Eric appeared with a smile on his face.

My first views of the new Terminal. For all of my trips to BCN I followed its progress, I never thought Id get to see it as I have no cause to do so many trips to BCN anymore. It was a bit weird for me landing in BCN to be honest. Alot of memories.

So I checked in and Eric checked in for his Transavia flight.

My check in was a bit disorganised. They had Cork and Dublin but in fact they had it wrong and we had to switch ques. Everything took so much time and its one of my pet hates all the times I flew out of BCN with EI. I hope they get online check in as its one of the few missing and takes so much time to process passengers at check in .

We passed through security and I was pointed over to an empty x ray machine and others qued at the other including Eric   He said to them how come I got special treatment lol...

First impressions of the old terminal is sad really. Alot of things closed down and empty looking.

We were looking for something to eat but it was very limited and highly inflated prices. €2.85 for a coke !!

Soon Eric's aircraft landed.

After a while I lifted the arm rests and lay down for a sleep. Cabin lights were dimmed and the next thing I knew we were making our decent into DUB.

We landed and pulled up into the D gates before disembarking and saying goodbye to the crew.

So thats the end of this report. I hope you all enjoyed it. This was my last ride on the BA B757 and Im glad I got the chance to fly it one last time. It was great to meet you Eric finally and hope to do some trips in future. Thank you for the great company.

Comments appreciated as usual.

Great report Philip!

It's sad to see the 757 disappearing from the BA fleet, a few years ago I could look out my window and see one climbing out of LHR every few minutes but these days I hardly ever see them. I wonder if EI is ever going to change the interiors of EI-EDP/EDS to the standard cabin, was there any noticeable differences in comfort compared to the usual cabin? I'm not really a fan of those slimline seats.

Thanks for posting.

Kevin.

Nice report Philip. Thanks for posting. Lots of great photos.

I must admit, the BA lounge is great at T3, I had the pleasure of visiting in January.

Nice to see a pic of the TK A343 in Star Alliance colours that I flew to Istanbul last week.

Hi Philip!

Somehow we managed to come online with our stories around the same time. Good to hear your experience and pics!

Quoting oa260 (Thread starter):
The day before we were due to fly we were anxious about the ash cloud , we decided to go to London anyway and see what happened. Eric had an emergency plan to get back to AMS

Oh yes, great to have that flexibility with mileage. Miles are returned already on my account after I cancelled that backup-ticket.

Quoting oa260 (Thread starter):
We entered the lounge and Eric had his professional camera which the lounge agent commented on ''I dont think you will find that much interesting to photograph in here ''. We smiled and then the lounge agent and Eric talked cameras as they are both into photography.

I should have said 'Let's start with you then on a picture', it was a friendly man indeed.

Quoting oa260 (Thread starter):
My fry up was very tasty and I think Eric enjoyed his also albeit small portion.

No problems with that food. It was 'dinnertime' not much later, so the small portion was not a big deal for me hehe.

Quoting oa260 (Thread starter):
Eric then produced a gift from Amsterdam, I love these so was really grateful. Thanks again Eric I shared them at work and they all loved them. Nearly all gone now but the last are for me only

Last one for you? Not for you know who I mean? LOL Next time you get some more...

Quoting oa260 (Thread starter):
A few seat changes at the the gate and they said there had been an aircraft change. We paniced a bit but turned out it was still a B757 so at some point before we booked it must have been an A320 etc.. Panic over .

Oh yes, and we already making our strategy how to solve that re-seating issue with the staff
Quoting oa260 (Thread starter):
I did however buy a Breo watch which was great value. The crew were chatty and friendly.

It took hours before I could return to my seat
Quoting oa260 (Thread starter):
Comming into land was quite bumpy .

Thunderstorm on the left side (see my pics). Views much better on my side during approach, quite a cool landing btw.

Quoting oa260 (Thread starter):
Eric wanted to get into the cockpit and the crew obliged. I wasnt that interested ( I know shame on me ) I waited outside on the air bridge and after a few minutes Eric appeared with a smile on his face.

Happy me   Seen and been in so many cockpits before and during work, the 757 is always something special.

Quoting oa260 (Thread starter):
My check in was a bit disorganised.

How about mine   It was not organised at all at BCN that night.

Quoting oa260 (Thread starter):
Very good price and tasted good. Aer Lingus has one of the best BOB in Europe .

Wish HV would have such items and prices on board.

Quoting oa260 (Thread starter):
It was great to meet you Eric finally and hope to do some trips in future. Thank you for the great company.

Similar here Philip. We make another plan later this year maybe. DUB and AMS are just 1 hour apart, but a stop to rest in LHR is always a great place to meet of course

Regards,
Eric

Hey, Phil,

another great story of you´re travels, togehter with A. net company always something special.
For sure interesting to follow the same flight from different views, real nice.

That lounge at LHR looks indeed large and spacious, maybe I should try it out myself sometimes.

Also impressive pictures from BCN.

Hi Philip,

Very nice TR and pix, an excellent way to spend a day, lot's of food, a few drinks and a flight on something a bit special, result!

The T3 lounge First section looks good, quite similar to the J one from memory.

Good job you ate in the lounge, that 'snack' on the flight is pretty small for such a long sector, I do think the MAD & BCN sectors warrant something a little more.

What is the plan with the old BCN terminal? - if it' staying open, surely the airport needs to provide better facilities rather than let the shops shut?

Looks like you were hungry on the return flight too!

Cheers

Mark

Hi Kevin,
Yes I thought they were ok and managed to sleep so they cant have been that bad, maybe I was just so tired I didnt care lol..Im not sure what they will do with them I guess the expense to replace them is not high on Mr Mullers agenda

Hello Philip! A very nice and enjoyable report! Nice to see your trip from a different perspective, or perhaps should day "the regular perspective"

Looks like you had quite a day spent in the Lounge, it looked absolutely fabulous. Really liked the design of the lounge. Sure seems to beat the BD lounge
Also pretty interesting to see that SAS seem quite big at LHR?

This is a great report. Your photos are not bad at all, for not having a professional camera. I like the BA 757. The new terminal at BCN looks so great compared to the old terminal.

The grey seats look really weird on EI. I don't think I've ever seen that before.

Quoting oa260 (Thread starter):
A while back fellow Anetter Airbuseric suggested we do a trip on the B757 as they are being phased out by BA. We also wanted to check out the BA F class lounge at LHR. So we chose dates we could both make and booked our flights.

Such a great idea to meet up with fellow A.netter. Would you be joining us on July 12th?

True , I worked there in the early 90's and remember all the great A/C there. LH A300 / TP A310 / Iberia A300 /AZ A300 / Swiss A310 and of course our own OA A300 / B727 etc...
