Dear A’netters,

After years of reading trip reports on airliners.net I finally decided to join a publish my own trip reports as well. So here we go! My first TR on airliners.net! I hope you enjoy. It covers my trip from AMS to OSL back in January 2010.

Introduction:

In the beginning of January KLM started their campaign ‘Werelddealweken’ again in which they offer a selection of destinations with some nice discount. As my travel dates were limited to a weekend I limited the possibilities to a European destination. OSL was offered for EUR 129,- return and as I always wanted to visit a Scandinavian country during winter I booked a ticket to OSL leaving on Saturday January 30 and returning Sunday January 31.

Then there was the choice of aircraft. KLM offered four daily flights operated by several different aircraft types like the E190, 738 and 733. As I never flew the E190 I really wanted to fly this type and settled for an early departure out of AMS and returning the next day just after midday with a 733.

The whole booking process was swift on KL’s website and the e-ticket was received in my inbox five minutes after I completed the booking.

The day of my trip finally arrived and around 04:00 the alarm sounded. The first thing I noticed was that it really snowed a lot during the night. The drive from Rotterdam to Schiphol Airport normally takes around 30-35 minutes but with only the right lane safe enough to drive the trip took around 50 minutes. After parking the car and taking the bus to Schiphol Plaza I went to the KL kiosks and printed my boarding pass. After that I passed customs which was a breeze.
When arriving at the gate I found the following announcement on the FIDS.

http://i747.photobucket.com/albums/xx117/ChrisCruise1980/IMG_3947.jpg

It did not came as a surprise because of the weather. KL took good care of its passengers by distributing bottles of water.

Date: January 30, 2010
Route: AMS-OSL
Flight: KL1141
Aircraft: Embraer 190
Registration: PH-EZF (delivered new to KL on August 14, 2009)
Seat: 21F

The delay even got longer because boarding started only at the postponed departure time of 08:05. Here the beautiful E190 at the gate.

http://i747.photobucket.com/albums/xx117/ChrisCruise1980/IMG_3949.jpg

After boarding the captain introduced himself and apologized for the delay. The reason for the delay was that the plane came back from maintenance in the KL hangar but could not be brought to the gate as the taxiways were still covered with snow.

Seat pitch was very generous as you can see in the picture below. I was very comfortable with my 1,93m. The thing that immediately caught my attention were the misaligned windows. I really needed to bend forward to have a decent view out of the window.

http://i747.photobucket.com/albums/xx117/ChrisCruise1980/IMG_3950.jpg

Although the airplane came back from maintenance it still needed to be de-iced.

http://i747.photobucket.com/albums/xx117/ChrisCruise1980/IMG_3953.jpg

After de-icing we set course to runway 36L also known as the ‘Polderbaan’ at 08:52, which meant a delay of almost 2 hours. After a 15 min ride we arrived at the runway and were immediately cleared for take-off. I have to say the Embraer 190 accelerated quickly and we rocketed into the sky.

http://i747.photobucket.com/albums/xx117/ChrisCruise1980/IMG_3965.jpg

Being relatively new the airplane looked immaculate. Seats were extremely comfortable and off grey leather. The cabin was filled for around 70%.

http://i747.photobucket.com/albums/xx117/ChrisCruise1980/IMG_3971.jpg

After reaching cruising altitude the two female flight attendants started the standard KL service. I was offered two sandwiches (one cheese, one ham) and a coffee. Both flight attendants were young and very friendly. After receiving my coffee the very nice (and pretty) brunette flight attendant asked if I wanted another drink but I kindly declined.
After passing over the west coast of Denmark we reached the southern point of Norway and speed breaks were applied. I really like this picture because the sun perfectly lightens up all mechanisms normally covered.

http://i747.photobucket.com/albums/xx117/ChrisCruise1980/IMG_3979.jpg

We flew parallel to the airport to the north making a turn and land in southerly direction on runway 19R. Before landing the FO came with the latest information telling is it was minus 13 degrees in OSL. After breaking through the clouds I saw this beautiful scene.

http://i747.photobucket.com/albums/xx117/ChrisCruise1980/IMG_3988.jpg

Although I was used to some snow due to the cold weather in the Netherlands in the past couple of weeks , the scene was amazing and never like I saw before.

We taxied to the gate followed by an Icelandair B752 and parked next to the 6000th 737 of Norwegian. After a friendly goodbye from the flight attendants and the Captain I disembarked and made some nice pictures of my ride. All I can say is that the aircraft was absolutely great in terms of comfort and performance.

http://i747.photobucket.com/albums/xx117/ChrisCruise1980/IMG_4000.jpg

After reaching the terminal I went to the NSB ticket office to buy a return ticket to OSL Central station opting for the normal train to enjoy the snowy landscape a little bit more. When I arrived at central station I immediately went to the hotel. I booked the Comfort Hotel Borsparken which was an excellent choice as it was situated close to the city center, opera, the Akershus Festning and the Aker Brygge. The room was clean and the hotel offered free coffee and wireless internet. I can really recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Oslo and not wanting to spend too much money on a hotel. Besides the hotel I attached some other photos of Oslo.

Characteristic statue for Oslo

After a good night of sleep I walked to Oslo Central Station to catch the train to the airport. The ride as smooth and on the way I enjoyed the beautiful landscape covered in a thick layer of snow. At the airport I went to a KLM kiosk and printed my boarding pass. I checked in online the night before in the hotel.

After that I went through customs where they confiscated my hair gel. Because it was in a 150 ml container instead of the 100 ml that is allowed, despite being only a quarter full. Strictly seen the guy was right but I was annoyed anyway.
After some last minute shopping and exploring the very nice departure terminal of OSL I went to the gate.

Date: January 31, 2010
Route: OSL-AMS
Flight: KL1144
Aircraft: Boeing 737-306 (Jacob Roggeveen)
Registration: PH-BDP (delivered new to KL on March 7, 1989)
Seat: 23F (window)

Seated at the gate I saw the 737 coming in on time, that was my ride home:

http://i747.photobucket.com/albums/xx117/ChrisCruise1980/IMG_4042.jpg
Jacob Roggeveen

http://i747.photobucket.com/albums/xx117/ChrisCruise1980/IMG_4043.jpg
And again

Boarding started on time and I was welcomed by two friendly but older flight attendants. When I arrived at the second last row I saw how tight the legroom was. When I got seated I noticed the seatback was broke and got into the recline position. The elderly woman already seated in 24F made a remark that I should be more careful in a very unpleasant way. In not too kind words I made her understand that she should complain with the airline and not me.
The flight was almost completely full. The very tall Norwegian guy who was supposed to next to me complained to the flight attendant about the legroom and switched to 22D. Very nice as I had the seat next to me empty meaning a much more comfortable ride home.

http://i747.photobucket.com/albums/xx117/ChrisCruise1980/IMG_4047.jpg
An almost full cabin

We were pushed back on time and went to the de-icing area. There are two trucks positioned next to each side of the airplane and within no time the process was over. Much more efficient in my opinion than the de-icing at the gate as they do in AMS.

http://i747.photobucket.com/albums/xx117/ChrisCruise1980/IMG_4049.jpg
Efficient de-icing

The captain immediately entered the runway (01L) and accelerated in northerly direction. After making a left hand turn we set course to AMS.

http://i747.photobucket.com/albums/xx117/ChrisCruise1980/IMG_4053.jpg
Pretty landscape

Service commenced with the standard KL service. First a bread with a drink and afterwards a second drink run with a Dutch cookie. Although the sandwiches are nothing special the presentation with the traditional Dutch scenery makes it attractive to look at. Better than for example the presentation on LH short haul flights.

http://i747.photobucket.com/albums/xx117/ChrisCruise1980/IMG_4064.jpg
Lunch and coffee

After 1h 30 min the captain started the descend and we approached AMS over the province of Flevoland and then IJmuiden for a Polderbaan (18R) arrival.

http://i747.photobucket.com/albums/xx117/ChrisCruise1980/IMG_4072.jpg
Most of the snow dissappeared

http://i747.photobucket.com/albums/xx117/ChrisCruise1980/IMG_4073.jpg
IJmuiden and Hoogovens (steal industry)

Touch-down was smooth and during the breaking we passed the spotters area alongside the Polderbaan. Despite the cold weather there were quite some people enjoying AMS arrival as you can see in these pics.
We crossed runway 18/36C and crossed the A4 motorway before arriving at the gate.

Conclusion:

It was a very nice trip and I can really recommend to visit the very beautiful city of Oslo. Despite the delay I really had a very pleasant trip onboard KL. The E190 is a very comfortable aircraft and according to KL’s inflight magazine it ranks highest in customer satisfaction of all other airplanes in KL’s fleet. The leg from AMS to OSL was even made better with the cheerful flight attendants and the nice service.

The return leg, although on-time, was less comfortable. The 737-306 is really showing its age and the lack of sufficient legroom and the broken seatback made the trip not that comfortable. These 300 series are gradually getting replaced by the 700 series and I hope KL will do it quickly.

After all it was a very nice weekend trip and I hope to make many more in the future and no doubt many of those will be onboard a KL aircraft.

Thanks for reading and questions/feedback is always welcomed. I hope the quality of this TR is on par with airliners.net expectations!

Adios,

ChrisCruise

Ps. Next TR will cover AMS-FRA-AMS on LH (unfortunately with a lack of pictures due to a broken camera)

hi ChrisCruise

Perfect first TR !!!
Nice to see the short-haul product of KL.
The lunch on these short hops is way better than the really small sandwiches on LH
Looking forward to read the AMS-FRA-AMS leg on LH

Hello Suryo,

It was that great that I booked myself on another KL E190 flying from MUC shortly. I'm looking forward to that very much also because I will be for the first time on KL 737-700 on the AMS-MUC leg.

Same with me! And welcome to A.net. Great first report, I always enjoy reading about KLM (Cityhopper). These ERJ-190 look really sharp. Seeing them at STR all the time along with the Fokkers is really luring me to book a flight to AMS. Love the artistic sandwich wrapping, all in all sure looks like a good service.

Haha, my next TR covering LH on the AMS-FRA routewas also back in January with lots of snow. Lucky you that my camera broke down and I was not able to capture a lot of the snowy surroundings.

After that I'm done catching up on the winter trips and will write TRs about my trips in June/July with hopefully better weather.

Hi Chris (?)

Welcome among the tripreporters   Good to have somebody new in the 'Dutch team'. Good kick-off with this KLM Embraer 190. I think it was only reported once, briefly before. This one does the trick and gives a better insight on this 'new' KLM aircraft.

Quoting ChrisCruise (Thread starter):
As I never flew the E190 I really wanted to fly this type and settled for an early departure out of AMS and returning the next day just after midday with a 733.

Good choice, since the E190's are extremely comfortable compared to any 3-3 lay out aircraft for these European sectors, and the B733 is probably gone soon too. I guess you flew the 733's before? It's becoming difficult nowadays to get on them...

Quoting ChrisCruise (Thread starter):
After that I passed customs which was a breeze.

Can be a nightmare also in AMS. But did you pass customs? Or do you mean 'security'. Not sure myself now, since your destination was Norway.

Quoting ChrisCruise (Thread starter):
KL took good care of its passengers by distributing bottles of water.

Good thing indeed. But not standard for KLM with these minimal delays... I think it was some kind of routine during this severe winter.

Quoting ChrisCruise (Thread starter):
The thing that immediately caught my attention were the misaligned windows. I really needed to bend forward to have a decent view out of the window.

Not really paid attention to this issue. I found it never really annoying, but I'll check again on my next E90 ride.

Quoting ChrisCruise (Thread starter):

True. Presentation on KL is better, but,.... I think sandwich on LH is better. The KLM portions are really small also, but the packaging make them look larger.

Quoting ChrisCruise (Reply 3):
I'm looking forward to that very much also because I will be for the first time on KL 737-700 on the AMS-MUC leg.

Beware, KLM changes very often the types within their 737-network, all making best effort of aircraft used compared to the actual bookings. It still might become a B733/734/738 for the MUC flight. I have been unlucky already twice to get the B73W, also our member LH4116 from Sweden was unlucky catching a scheduled B739 which was downgraded to B738. Good luck anyway getting on it! MUC is a fantastic airport btw.

Regards,
Eric

Hi Chris, welcome to Airliners.net! A very enjoyable report, and a good deal on the round trip ticket! Was OSL affordable in terms of food and train tickets? Great that you got on one of the newest and one of the older types in the KLM fleet!

It was! Normally airlines I flew with do only provide this kind of service when the delay exceeds two hours. Now they started this service already after 45 min delay.

Quoting CrimsonNL (Reply 11):

Oslo (Norway) is known for its expensive standard of living. It you plan it good and do things on your own you can save a lot money. Here is an indication of prices I paid.

Hotel (1 person room incl. breakfast for 1 night) EUR 85,-

Return ticket from OSL to Oslo Central EUR 32,- (that is normal train). You can explore the city on your own by walking around as it is not that big and thereby cutting transportation costs.

Food in restaurants is expensive. There are 7-eleven stores where you can buy sandwiches at a reasonable price.

All in all I did not spent that much money.

Adios,

Christian

I've always wanted to fly on the E 190- do you feel it feels more like a 737, or more like an CRJ? It looks from inside as it must sit as high as the 737 off the ground, the wing tip clearance looks pretty high...

Hello FlyBoy,

I cannot comprare yet as I have never flown in a CRJ. End of June I will fly LHR-DUS on a CRJ-900, DUS-FRA on an E190 and FRA-AMS on a 733 all within the same day.

I will compare those three aircrafts and let you know!

Better than for example the presentation on LH short haul flights.

Definitely. Generally, KL's sandwiches also taste better than LH's.

The 737-306 is really showing its age and the lack of sufficient legroom and the broken seatback made the trip not that comfortable. These 300 series are gradually getting replaced by the 700 series and I hope KL will do it quickly.

I had the same experience recently. I flew AMS-FCO-AMS and the AMS-FCO leg was with a 734 and the return leg with a 738. The difference was very noticeable, the 738 looks much better inside. I'll be flying AMS-EDI-AMS soon, and the return is currently scheduled with a 733, so not really happy with that (was originally planned as 737-700).

Hi Christian and welcome!

As far as first reports go this is great!

All the people have commented on the snowy pictures - for me this is nothing new (for obvious reasons!), but I'm still quite amazed to see so much snow at AMS!

Great idea to catch a ride on the E190, KL is now operating them to HEL as well on selected flights, I should try to get a ride on one soon. Too bad the KL fares are not up to today's standards (i.e. no affordable one ways, Sat night stay requirements etc.).

Looking forward for more reports.

Hey funny, I guess we work in the same building in Brainpark... nice building they have in Oslo!

Yes I work at the PwC office at Brainpark as well! That is funny. Never knew that there were other collegues interesting in aviation as well. Most collegues look at me sheepisly when I tell them I'm going to fly again just for the flying!

True. Presentation on KL is better, but,.... I think sandwich on LH is better. The KLM portions are really small also, but the packaging make them look larger.

It seems there is some disagreement in this topic   But you know what they say about taste!

It seems that you have to have a little luck with the A/C. The 734 I had back in August 2008 from FCO to AMS (PH-BTI -Niels Bohr) was just fine. But this one is only from December 1997 and not much older than the oldest 738.

Hello FlyingFinn76. Yes you are right! You have to win the lottery if you want to book an one-way ticket on KL. They are very expensive. I only fly KL when they have a promotion as in most other cases other carriers are cheaper.

Thanks for everybody's comments!

Christian

Haha, I know... I also have a collection of about 200 model aircraft, so when colleagues come to my house the reaction is mixed. Some love it... others look sheepish like you said. But on the other hand... when they are looking for a deal when booking a vacation the first person they go to is me, haha. Especially when I told them I flew to SIN last October for EUR 400 (on LH). I see you're an accountant? So on one of the lower floors huh  . I work on the 14th.

I flew PH-BPC (Ernest Hemingway) in March this year. Built in 1989. It's not that it looked terrible on the inside, for it's age it actually looked pretty good. But the contrast with the much newer 738 was quite apparant.

No, no, no!! You were right Eric! They changed the 737-700 to a 733!      What a deception!!!!!!

Adios,

Christian

Was OSL affordable in terms of food and train tickets?

Nothing is affordable in Norway
Quoting ChrisCruise (Reply 12):
You can explore the city on your own by walking around as it is not that big and thereby cutting transportation costs.

You can also buy a 24 hr pass giving unlimited rides on subway, bus, tram, local trains, and even boats to the islands for a full 24 hrs. Cost is NOK60 I think.

Well done ChrisCruise! This was a very interesting trip report indeed. Your pictures were great too. The one thing is, from your pictures your journey seemed... cooooold! Then again Winter 2010 in Europe was a severe one indeed.

KL CityHopper has great service, I flew them back in 2006 between CWL and DUS by way of AMS and enjoyed the Fokkers (100 and 50). I have seen the Embraers in CWL of late. Hopefully soon I get to fly on them again, time will tell.

Polderbaan is indeed an experience in itself, a full 20 minutes away from the terminal!

Thanks again, well done and keep them coming.

TrinToCan.

Hop to it, fly for life!
