I live in Jacksonville, Florida (JAX) and attend Jacksonville University majoring in Aviation Management. I decided to attend the Grand Opening of the New Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport (ECP) in Panama City, Florida on Saturday May 22, 2010. This report will provide a tour of the new airport. (Mostly Pictures)

I left my place of residence in Jacksonville at 7am EST and arrived at the new airport at approximatively 10:22 am CST.

This is County Road 388 that the airport code is connected to. The main road to the airport.

Conclusion:
The Good:
1- New modern terminal
2- Long runway, modern tower and navigation instruments
3- Cheap/affordable parking

The Bad:
1 - It is difficult to get to. There is no direct interstate access to the airport road. Coming from Jacksonville I took exit 130 down County road 231 then took a right turn into County road 388. Then drove endlessly towards the airport. (It took 90 minutes from the interstate to the airport) The location is to the west of "downtown" Panama City. (30 minutes). And roughly 21 minutes to Panama City Beach.
2 - No Infrustructure in place.. No hotels, stores, gas stations nearby. It's located in a FOREST with nothing around.
3 - The pitched roof design - looks cheap and warehouse like. Plus the teal color is a bit strong and tacky.
4 - The "dots" on some of the terminal windows.

MANY more pictures are available on my Photobucket Album.

Give companies time to build hotels, motels, restaurants, gas stations & etc. I say the airport looks great. They did a good job considering what it cost to build. They could have been cheap and used a bunch of mobile buildings. I would like to see more airlines fly into ECP.

Thanks for all the pics.

Excellent report! Cool to see this new airport, but...

DOTS?! Why, oh why, would any sane person put those damn dots on windows!? What purpose do they serve? It's like these airport planners are playing a sick joke on us aviation spotters! Is this the way of the future?

Thank you for posting, it was great to read!

Cheers!

Very nice pics. I take it DL occupies two gates at ECP (probably 1 for the MD-88s and one for the RJs seeing one is lower to the ground than the other) seeing as there is a jetway designated to DL on both sides of the terminal.

Sure it leaves a lot to be desired design-wise, but considering the cost and the fact it is LEED-certified (green/sustainable), it is definitely acceptable.

The Flight Information Board photo shows an arriving Southwest Flight #1775 from Nantucket?

Is this a mistake? Charter? I'm confused.

I will give them time - They have the whole area around the airport planned.

The dots sticked on glass windows are to protect the terminal interior from heat and light. Energy efficient windows. Luckily not all of the windows on the concourse have the dots.

Yes, Delta uses Gate's 4 (CRJ) and 5 (MD-80). Southwest Gate 3. No airlines currently use Gate's 1 and 2.

Yes- I noticed this also. I have no idea why it said "Nantucket". Probably just to test the board. Surprisingly this information board was the only one that I saw. And it was located in the Baggage Claim area.

Is it just me, or does it resemble IND a lot - inside of the terminal at least??

I was not even aware of this! It looks nice a bit far from the city it seems but I guess it serves a large land area. The airport looks nice, I like the terminal modern and spacious for such a small airport. Good job to the people in NW FL.

i find the design to be very "beachy" looking. Which given the area the airport is serving is rather appropriate. i don't really find it tacky at all, rather the design is quite attractive and looks well done.

I think "beachy" can be done better. A nice, modern looking building in maybe a white stucco (or similar material) and light green-tinted glass, with nice, horizontal lines.... And of course, the appropriate beachy interior/exterior colors and landscaping.

I was going to post that the design and layout reminds me a lot of DAB. Nice little airport though... Southwest to ACK though? Seems a strange route
