Premium Meal & PMI Spotting:
Munich - Palma de Mallorca on Condor 757-300

Intro
The focus is on Condor's Boeing 757-300 in part 1 of my latest trip report series. I will give an impression of the plane's interior and the "Premium Meal" service offered on a flight from Munich to Palma de Mallorca. In addition to the flight report you will also find a few pictures taken on a spotting tour around Son San Juan Airport.

Background
In late November 2009 Condor was offering one-way flights from Munich to Palma for 69 Euro, available in spring 2010. My friend Satchmo hadn't flown on the 757-300 yet so he asked me whether I would be interested in a spotting tour in late April. I had already flown on NWA's 757-300, but I liked the idea of getting on that rare type again. However, I also wanted to add at least one new airline or one new type, so we started searching for interesting return trip options. Some time later the final itinerary consisted of four flights - and included one new airline and one new type for me. Details to follow in part 2.

If you want to check in online for a Condor flight you need to reserve a seat for 10 Euro. We agreed that it wouldn't be worth it and so we tried to be at the check-in counters early enough. 1,5 hours prior to departure we joined the relatively small queue and soon got our boarding passes. Several window seats in the back had still been available.

Passing security was just a matter of a few minutes in the early morning and soon we took a seat at the gate area. D-ABOH, one of 13 757-300s in the fleet, was built and delivered in March 1999:

Friendly flight attendants welcomed us on board while we were walking down all the long way to row 46. The cabin was in good shape and the fabric seats were quite comfortable...

Legroom wasn't bad either:

No doubts, the cabin design is intended to get passengers in holiday mood:

It wasn't very busy at Terminal 1 on that early Saturday morning. An Air France A320 and a KLM 737 were being prepared for their early morning flights to Paris and Amsterdam:

We left the gate ten minutes late and taxied to runway 08R. Takeoff was not as powerful as hoped...

...but views were beautiful:

The load factor was in the 80 percent range and some seats around us had remained empty. The passenger in the aisle seat next to me moved to another row shortly after takeoff, so I could stretch out.

It didn't take very long until we were cruising over the Alps:

Half an hour after takeoff, before flight attendants started serving free non-alcoholic drinks and cheese sandwiches, I received my pre-ordered "Premium Meal" - a cold breakfast for 7 Euro. I was really curious to find out whether it would come up to expectations.

This is how Condor describes the "Premium Meal" service on its website:
"Haute cuisine above the clouds: In addition to our regular in-flight service, we offer you a selection of first-class meals on our international flights – our Premium Menus. We'll serve you an exquisite meal with select ingredients depending on the route and the time of day.
Enjoy an exclusive ambiance characterized by modern elegance, excellent cocktails and exquisite top-quality meals – courtesy of Kameha Suite – in Frankfurt, Cologne and on Mallorca. Kameha Suite's chef de cuisine created exquisite Premium Meals specifically for our flights from Germany."

And this is how Condor describes the cold breakfast:
"Get your day off to a healthy start with a colorful fruit salad chock-full of vitamins and a delicious fruit yogurt. We serve this with a selection of cold cuts with turkey breast spinach roll, Black Forest ham and stinging nettle cheese. Round off your breakfast with a croissant, a roll and jam. This breakfast finishes with a mini Bundt cake and a melt-in-your-mouth sweet delicacy."

Now let’s see - here's the tray:

All items unpacked:

Was it really worth it? Yes, it was a tasty and filling breakfast. What I liked in particular was the Guácimo milk chocolate bar. I would definitely order such a breakfast again and I would also try the hot meals offered on medium and long-haul flights. However, Condor should improve the quality of its tea.

The cabin was equipped with overhead screens which were showing the airshow channel most of the time:

Several audio channels were available, too, but I preferred listening to my MP3s. Flight attendants had offered headphones for 3,50 Euro shortly after takeoff, but I'm quite sure they didn't sell many of them due to the short flying time.

Cabin shot:

On approach we passed Port de Pollenca and the Cap Formentor, the northernmost part of Mallorca:

Only a few more moments to go:

After a flying time of 1 hour and 46 minutes we touched down at runway 24L and taxied to a remote parking position next to some other Condor 757-300s.

Since we were only travelling with hand luggage we could immediately leave the terminal. Unfortunately, it took some time until the "Hasso Rent a Car" shuttle bus showed up.

Palma Spotting
About one hour after arrival we finally got a red Fiat 500 (some 25 Euro per day) and went to the first spotting spot next to runway 24L:

The surrounding area is not really pretty...

...but the location offers good views of the runway. This is Air Nostrum DHC-8-300 EC-LFH, still wearing the basic Arik Air color scheme:

Some hours later we moved on to a spot next to runway 24R. This is EC-KXQ, meanwhile the last remaining ERJ-145 in the Andalus fleet:

In the late afternoon it was time to switch to a spot under the approach path of runway 24L. Very nice scenery:

We were quite satisfied with our "hunt" in the end, even though we missed some aircraft from Eastern Europe. I logged a total of 56 new registrations at Palma during the whole day.

Later in the evening we checked in at the Roc Linda Hotel at Can Pastilla which is not far from the airport. It's a rather basic 3-star-hotel, but the room was clean and the staff was friendly. The low rate of 36 Euro per room even included breakfast and dinner buffet. Of course, you shouldn't expect any culinary delights.
Views from the room balcony:

Early the next morning we headed to the airport again to start our two-stop return trip. Story to be continued...

Conclusion
Condor offered a decent product on the short Munich-Palma sector. All staff members were friendly, the 757-300 cabin was in good shape, seats were comfortable and legroom was sufficient. I cannot complain about the entertainment system either - the airshow channel is all I need on such short routes. It was also good to see that Condor still offers non-alcoholic drinks and sandwiches free of charge. The "Premium Meals" are a nice addition to the service concept, I wouldn't hesitate to order such a meal again.

Best Regards,
PlaneHunter

I LOVE the Fiat 500!!! Nice to see the new generation of it, something we don't see here in America. The new generation looks very much like the old one which is great. How was it to drive ?

Amazing deal of EUR 36.00 plus dinner and breakfeast!!! As long as it's clean, that's all that matters to me.

Looking forward to part 2!

Hey PH,

Very nice trip report, thank you for shearing.

This breakfast looks fine, but for 7 Euro I would expect something warm to come with it, omelet for example.

The B753 is nice, isn't it? I had the B753 for the first time myself two weeks ago for very short ride, I hope to get a longer flight on one of IZ's B753 someday, since they are due to stay in service here for a while.

If I am not mistaken, Arkia, Condor and Icelandair were the first 3 airlines to buy the B753, with 17 jets total (13 of them to Condor), and only later CO & NWA bought B753s too.

Nice photos, seems like you had nice time in Palma.

Hi PH, a great 1st instalment of this TR and most definitely looking forward to the 2nd part. Your friend Satchmo has taken some amazing pictures especially the ones when taking off from Munich and seeing the morning mist/fog. Out of curiosity what type of zoom was used for the spotting pictures as the airport looks literally right next to the side road.

At least its not as bad as FR and EZY where you don't even get seat numbers.

It would get me in the mood for a holiday if I saw that getting on a plane, but then depress me if I'm going home.

In some places I've stayed which are more expensive, I didn't get breakfast let alone dinner.

Yes, the price was ok. Certain low cost carriers charge 4-5 Euro for an average sandwich.

Well, it doesn't look bad, but it's too small for me. And it doesn't drive as good as the cars which I am used too.

The 753 rocks, the fuselage length is amazing. According to an ATDB database entry Condor's fleet is due to be retired between 2011 and 2012. That would be quite disappointing, I hope it's not true.

The premium meal looks value for money! Does Condor serve normal food for free or do you still have to pay? However, either way I guess I'd choose the premium meal. Even though I am on a full stomach typing this comment, the cold cuts still look very appetizing for me.

A few weeks ago I finally noticed how the length to width ratio of the 757-300 made it a long plane which I really love and wants to have a ride on it someday, unfortunately there are no B757 operators near SIN, the nearest is CZ in CAN and they only operate the 752. Condor's services looks neat too, plus their livery is definitely a fresh and relaxing one, great to start a vacation with!

Hope to see more great reports from you, Mr PlaneHunter.

The flights were perfect, they were on time, the a/c was fairly clean & leg room was decent (flew on their only 737-700 on the same route last year, was slightly more uncomfortable). The cabin crew were ok, nothing special but no where near as bad as the FH crew I had in 2007. The Primera/Jetx flight crew also gave a few informative announcements, never heard a word from the pilots on the Futura flights. I posted my first & only trip report on the 2008 flights.

That is by far the most attractive cabin design I have ever seen. It really makes you get into the holiday mood.

Looks nice and not too expensive for EUR 7,-. There are carriers where you pay that money for a can of beer and a bag of crisps.

Nice spotting. I love spotting at the spanish islands.

Planehunter,

Thanks for sharing this report on your recent trip! I've never flown on a 757-300; definitely looks pretty long in that cabin shot! Great shots out of the window on your flight down. Looks like it was a nice day for flying.

Quoting PlaneHunter (Thread starter):
Was it really worth it? Yes, it was a tasty and filling breakfast. What I liked in particular was the Guácimo milk chocolate bar. I would definitely order such a breakfast again and I would also try the hot meals offered on medium and long-haul flights.

Really nice looking breakfast! Yes, for chocolate in the early morning!   Definitely worth the extra money.

Thanks for the info and the link, I somehow missed that report!

Quoting luxair747SP (Reply 15):
really nice TR

Ive been to PMI quite a few times but never tried DE, but after reading your report I think it would be worth doing trip to Mallorca again and the 757-300 is a bird Ive never been flying with

Thanks for the feedback, Johannes. I can only recommend to try DE's 753.

Sometimes you can even find those short flights for 59 Euro - but the number of tickets is quite limited.

Quoting ChrisCruise (Reply 16):

Only 55 have been built which is a very low number.

Hi PH,

A very interesting report on the 753! I have been looking for opportunities to fly a Condor (or rather any) one for some time now but haven't been able to find a low enough fare with a good schedule so far - your fare definitely would've done it for me!

That breakfast looks good and I agree it's good value for the price.

Nice plane shots from PMI, I especially like that Air Nostrum Dash in Arik Air livery! Give Satchmo compliments for some amazing photography as well.

Hi PH.

Another enjoyable TR - it isn't just legacy carriers that you do very well it seems... My particular like about this TR was Palma and the island of Mallorca. It brought back very pleasant memories as it is an island close to my heart and I get out when-ever it isn't the tourist season and the locals tentatively come emerge from their houses!

It certainly looked great and just the correct amount.... but it does seem to come along with quite a fanfare

I love this unmistakable approach into Mallorca.... it always marks the dramatic arrival onto these great islands.

Looking forward to your return sector.... did I also see you'de done MUC-MAN or was I imagining!?

Hi PH,

Great report and excellent pictures taken by you and Satchmo. I also like Condor a lot, they are my preferred holiday carrier in Germany. I haven't flown them for quite some years though, so I haven't yet tried out the premium meal. It really doesn't look bad.

Hi and thanks for the nice report! I just came back from Mallorca as well. We got a nice deal with Neckermann Reisen Frankfurt-Palma-Frankfurt with Condor and a nice 4* Hotel in Alcudia for as low as 110 EUR, including meals. Didn#t hesited a lot and booked it.

Flights were with Condor 757-300 as well, I love this aircraft. Departure was at OMG time (4:40 am!!) but therefore we got 2 full days in Mallorca, which is such a nice island as long as you visit other places than Platja de Palma, Can Pastilla, S'Arenal etc... Especially a drive through the Tramuntara Mountains and to Formentor.

But back to the aviation part: I always enjoyed flying with Condor in the past, and I still do. They are sometimes notorious with huge delays, but in our specific case all went fine, except unloading luguage of no show guests on the flight from FRA to PMI, but Condor is not to blame for that. Crew was very average and almost a little rude on the way out, but on the flight back to Frankfurt they were great, taking care of the kids etc.

However their pre evening check-in ("Vorabend-Check-in") is a mess. Two counters for 8 flights between 4 am and 6:30 am. It took ages and the queue was longer than any long haul carrier crew. What's more is that you can only do online check in if you are willing to pay for a seat reservation. i do understand that most people would not use webcheck-in anyway since Condor is mainly a charter and holiday carrier (although they offer individual bookings as well - but not as "organized" and massively as Air Berlin i.e.), nevertheless this is a bad point.

I realized they have some problems with a "standard" service... Exemples: FRA-PMI they showed a full movie (which was interrupted in the end, since the flight was too short), turned on the landing camera view etc. On the way back this wasn't the case and no movie was shown, but music clips and sitcoms/cartoons, which is more appropriate. When we arrived in PMI we were on a remote gate (although the airport was almost empty) and back we got a jetway.

Found also two interesting signs at check-in:
-In Frankfurt there was a sign on the check-in counter informing guests that Condor uses aircrafts from "White Airlines" for Jerez and Kos, would have loved to fly on them (they're from Turkey if I'm correct)
-In Palma they had a sign on the check-in-desk promoting upgrades in case flights are operated by Boeing 767-longhaul equipment: 20 EUR for Upgrade to Premium Economy and 40 EUR for Upgrade to Comfort Class. Although service is economy in all cabins, I think the price is fair. Good to know if you're going to fly a 767 on that route.

Portugal actually. They have two A310s in the fleet, those would be nice birds to catch, but somehow I think these routes are operated by the sole A320 instead, could be wrong though.

Hi PlaneHunter,

Enjoyable read. I particularly like the photo of the Alps with the winglet and the AB with the windmill, so thanks to Satchmo too.

You certainly got a good trayful of food for 7 euros, although they could have improved the presentation of the meat and cheese a bit.
