"Blue Begins With You"

The morning of Tuesday June 22, 2010, sister and I fly JetBlue from Portland, OR to Boston, MA through Long Beach, CA. The family wanted to spend the night before at the Embassy Suites by the airport, due to the early morning departure and the fact they didn't want to take us to the airport. I was up at 4:00 AM on June 22 and prepared for the travel day ahead of us. We were in the hotel lobby at around 5:15 ready to board the courtesy shuttle. Parents weren't flying with us that day, but they still wanted to come with us to PDX. The shuttle left at about 5:20 and we were on our way.

Upon arrival at PDX, sister and I (the only B6 travelers on the shuttle) were dropped off on the outer roadway in the United/JetBlue area. We tipped the driver, crossed the street and walked through the revolving doors into Portland International Airport.

There was a giant "mob" of people waiting in front of the relatively large number of United check-in counters. I was pleased to see on the very left end of the United section one, single JetBlue counter, sporting the logo, with a very small line in front of it. I got the boarding passes from a self-service kiosk, since I am not in love with online check-in like too many people are. We then waited in the short line and got our two bags tagged. Something that annoys me about PDX is that you can't just drop off your bags with your airline; the airline simply tags them and then instructs you which scanner to bring them over to. I was told by a B6 agent that this is because they "currently" don't have scanners behind the check-in counters... ?

After the quick, easy, and friendly check in, we dropped off the bags and headed for the north security checkpoint. Our gate was in the E Concourse, and the north checkpoint had a shorter line than the south checkpoint like it usually does. We said goodbye to our parents here, got in line, and proceeded through security without a problem. As we head for our gate we notice the parents still watching us from the other end...

Gate E3 is about halfway down Concourse E, and is the only B6 gate at PDX. It is actually a United gate. You can see their logo on the information board at the gate as well on the Jetway. At the gate itself, their logo is covered by the B6 logo. There was a United flight departing from E3 when we got there. I then call our grandmother who is meeting us at the other end.

Since I had about and hour to kill before our flight boarded, I decided to walk around the airport. Sister stays at the gate with our things, and I wander around the D and E Concourses. This was my first time over in the north side of PDX in a year. I even walked all the way to the International Concourse (gates D10 - D15) at the end of the D Concourse. This was actually my first time over in the int'l concourse as I've never flown internationally out of PDX before. Maybe I will someday. The International Concourse was COMPLETELY empty at 6:00 AM. Not a single soul was over there except for the ghostly statue of the former governor. How eerie. I was disappointed to see that the international arrivals areas/customs and immigration facilities are kept very well obscured. I did see the separate security checkpoint for international arriving passengers who have another flight to connect with, but I still wonder what it's like behind the white frosted glass.

I eventually walked back to E3 about 15-20 minuted prior to boarding. Equipment had arrived while I was gone, and I noticed that all of the JetBlue planes have their own name, and of course it always something to do with blue. This one had stripes on its tail and was called "Blue Begins With You".

Boarding began at around 6:50. Since we were in only row 8, we were one of the last few to board. I was pleased to see that the gate agent was tearing the boarding passes after being scanned. We were greeted by the very friendly all-male crew. The middle seat between sister and I was occupied, and the flight closed up at 7:10. We left the gate at 7:18 and taxied to runway 28L-10R.

As soon as we took off and reached our cruising altitude, the crew offered complimentary snacks and beverages. True to what I learned, they did give out the whole can of Coke. I settle for cashews and a Diet Coke. Very nice.

We arrive in Long Beach at 9:34 AM, 6 minutes early. We deplane, walk down the ramp and across the tarmac to the the terminal building, and enter through gate 2A.

What a dump! Essentially all that there is in the "terminal" is lots of seats and some poorly maintained restrooms. Our departure gate for our flight to Boston, gate 2, is right next to our arrival gate. Great. Now what to do with our remaining hour and a half? The locals call this place a "trailer". Apparently this is one of the few U.S airports that doesn't use Jetways. Fabulous. First, I call home as well as grandmother just to check in. Then I give LGB poor marks on their comment card. I didn't have anything else to do, so I wandered around the terminal, took some pictures, and watched a flight board. Our old A320 departed for Seattle, and our new A320 arrived from a city that I can't remember.

Boarding began at about 11:00 and once again we were some of the last people to board. Our new aircraft "Blue Jersey" had diamonds on its tail. Oddly enough, we had the exact same flight attendants that we had on our flight from PDX. Very nice guys. The flight was closed up at 11:33 AM and we departed at 11:38, 13 minutes late.

The crew then started the snack and beverage service. Something interesting I noticed about B6 is that they do not use those carts for snacks, beverages and garbage that other airlines use. They carry snacks in a basket, take drink orders on an order pad with seat numbers on them, then return with a tray of beverages and cups of ice, and carry a bag down the aisle for trash. Weird. I get another Diet Coke and some snack mix.

I used the IFE much more on this flight, as I watched probably half a dozen different TV shows. Sister didn't really like the IFE due to the lack of movies/free movies. That was understandable. I personally loved it, though. I get some sleep and eventually the crew does a secondary snack and beverage service, due to the long length of the flight.

We eventually land in BOS and taxi to gate C29, with an 8:18 PM arrival, 28 minutes late. Not sure why. We deplane, use the restroom, and head for baggage claim. This was my first time in Terminal C in almost 3 years. Hasn't changed much! We exit the secured area and go downstairs to baggage carousel 4 (I think). A few minutes later our bags show up. Since we had about half an hour until our bus came, we get bagels and drinks from Dunkin' Donuts.

At 9:21 PM, C&J Trailways bus #2901 pulled up to the scheduled buses area outside of United baggage claim. C&J Trailways is the bus line that we take to and from Logan Airport. The very friendly driver loads up our bags and we are the only ones getting on at Terminal C.

A 1 hour and 50 minute bus ride later, we arrive at the Dover, NH Park & Ride and meet up with our grandparents!

As of this trip, JetBlue Airways is officially my favorite airline. Thanks for reading!

To each his own...I'd love to fly into LGB some time. Boarding aircraft via stairs has more of the VIP feel to it except when it rains.

Southwest does this as well. I think it works ok for long flights, but for shorter flights, carts are more efficient. Heck I've seen WN crews only serve water/coke/OJ on a 40 minute flight while an AA crew did a full beverage service. No turbulence on either flight.

Not a bad TR but please please please please add a few pictures! It really helps the reader identify with the situation. You don't have to catalog every single little detail with a photo or video like some people do on their TRs (although those are always interesting) but I highly recommend uploading a few pictures nonetheless! LGB airside IS a trailer and it is not the best place to spend any sort of time. Fortunately a lot of people use this airport for O&D and therefore it works OK. I have actually changed there before and I agree it is sort of a dump albeit in a quirky southern California sort of way. I understand the airport is under going some renovations that will either improve or eliminate the trailers and make the whole airport a much more pleasurable place to stop without comprimising the character of the main art deco facility.

This is one thing that will not change with the renovations. Personally I don't mind exiting the aircraft the old fashioned way, smelling the jet fuel and walking across the ramp. It is not so fun in the rain and cold, this is true, but fortunately SoCal weather is usually good!

No chance of getting whacked by the cart if in an aisle seat (this is a good thing!) but the possibility does exist of having the FA encroach your seat area if somebody is trying to get by. It's a fair trade off, in my opinion, and adds to the folksy but friendly nature of B6.

Does anybody offer free first-run movies nowadays on domestic flights? Tv versus movies... personally I prefer the TV for shorter flights (less than 3 hours), would prefer to watch a movie or two on longer flights, and I like the satellite radio for redeyes.

Actually, its quite the opposite. Having worked for 2 carriers, one with a cart and Southwest with the tray, I can tell you that the tray service is more geared for short flights. Using a cart requires set-up which can take time. I don't understand the water/coke/oj on a WN flight as that is not standard service. All flights have a full scheduled beverage service unless turbulence determines either limited or no cabin service. On that limited service flight, was turbulence anticipated? Sometimes we get a report of turbulence and take precautions even though it doesn't materialize.

We did have one flight at WN that was limited service and that was ISP-PVD, (35min block to block, less than 20 min actual flight tim), which ran until 2002. We did also do Juice/Coffee flights on short flights before 8am, but we did away with that last summer.

Thank you! I actually do have pictures from this trip, but they weren't uploaded to my profile at the time I wrote this, but when I when I try to upload them now it says after 2 or 3 photos that I have exceeded the capacity. What's up with that?

Well, it certainly is a unique experience! Both LGB itself as well as boarding with stairs.

Secondly, thanks for Jetting with us, I'm glad you enjoyed your experience. As far as LGB goes, yes, it is a trailer park, and I personally am not a fan of that airport. Check-in area is cramped, TSA lines are long, seating area during some points in the day are PACKED, and it just isn't the most welcoming looking place. However, if you take a look through some of the threads on here, and search online, you'll find the plans for the new LGB terminal which was FINALLY passed. So, stay tuned on that, there will be a new terminal coming in the future.

Awesome! Why were they in the departures lobby for the past few years to begin with? I don't remember them always being there...
