Time for my annual holiday away, this time it was time for a trip to the USA again. Wanting to try something new, I did a rather convoluted route with AirAsia X MEL-KUL-MEL then SQ KUL-SIN-LAX-EWR-LAX-KUL, reason for this is that if you fly SQ from KUL it's approx half the price than direct from SIN, which suited me fine as I got a great deal on the new AirAsia X premium seats from MEL, $1100 AUD return. About the same cost as MH in Y class. Whilst it's obviously not the same as MH Business class, with no lounge, no nice catering or amenities, BUT, the seat is pretty much the same as the one MH use, except with a lot less pitch. So if you are not fussed with the extras and are just looking for the extra comfort it's certainly worth it.

Now onto SQ, well after years of being loyal to MH, and as others here have pointed out they have declined badly in some areas over the last few years. I thought I would give SQ a go, and try the direct A345 all J class service to LAX and return from EWR. Well what can I say, my travelling partner and myself still think MH crew are just that bit better than SQ, the crew on the EWR-SIN sector were definitely not full of smiles that night, not to mention the plane was a bit shabby as well, in the toilet the covers over the waste basket were all broken, held up with tape, I had to tell the FA that they had run out of toilet seat covers and also there were no cups either.
The seats on the A345 are nice and wide, but for me in the bed mode it is just too short, admittedly it's probably not for people who are 6'4", I had to find weird angles to fit my feet into the small hole so that I could fit into the rest of the bed. Regardless it's still better than sloper seats. I still think the most comfortable "bed" I have tried so far would have to be on VS.
Catering on SQ is average in my opinion, nothing really stood out. They had a Satay entree course on the SIN-LAX sector which was pale in comparison to MH, 3 sticks, stupid little dishes to which they didn't give a fork or spoon to get the sauce out, and a wrapped in foil hand wipe?? Even MH can manage a wet towel in a bowel.
Catering from EWR was not very good at all, nearly everything I had looked and tasted very average, one of the FA's commented that the catering ex EWR was not as good as from SIN, it was pretty obvious.
Another disappointment would be the lack of a proper amenity kit, I think when you are paying top dollar, something more than $1 socks and an eyeshade would be nice. Admittedly they stock up their lavs with shaving kits, toothbrushes, combs, L'occitane creams and fragrances and mouthwash.
SQ's lounge in T3 at SIN is to die for though, fantastic in every respect, massive seating area, huge range of foods and drinks to try, best shower facilities this side of a 5 star hotel.

Enough talking now onto the photos

Yikes! I agree, compared to the Satay I had on SQ in F a couple of years ago.

Also, the Steak sandwich looked poorly presented as well.

I was on the same flight! If you decided to peek-a-boo behind the curtain that day, you could spot me at 34A LOL.

The Star Alliance liveried 9V-SRE has been booked by Russia's Transaero. That flight could be our last time flying with her. I find it interesting as well that the loads on D7's Premium cabin on your flights are very good.

Too bad to hear about the underwhelming experiences aboard SQ's flagship flights.

Hey Chrisrad nice TR and some good pictures. It's a shame that SQ didn't seem to meet your expectations. Normally whenever I've flown with them from London the food and service in general is outstanding no matter what class I've travelled in and the food even better.

Quoting chrisrad (Thread starter):
Wanting to try something new, I did a rather convoluted route with AirAsia X MEL-KUL-MEL then SQ KUL-SIN-LAX-EWR-LAX-KUL, reason for this is that if you fly SQ from KUL it's approx half the price than direct from SIN, which suited me fine as I got a great deal on the new AirAsia X premium seats from MEL, $1100 AUD return.

I never knew this, very odd indeed but good on you for finding out!

It's one of the best lounges I've ever been to. Not only the showers but as your pictures show you could be mistaken for thinking that you've walked into a new hotels lobby area as well as a few restaurants.

I wouldn't say underwhelming, just I had high expectations as many here carry on about SQ being so superior, the truth is, cabin service and catering wise there is not much difference between them, the only thing they are better in is their hard product.

The price differences depending where you depart from are huge, CGK is also another cheap airport to leave from. An extra 40 min flight in my instance was well worth saving about 50% off the price!

Great report! Nice views from all of your flights. The seats look pretty comfy on Air Asia X! What a long flight; EWR-SIN. Did not know they still had this direct flight! I thought it was stopped a while back.

This is a great TR! It is always surprising to see that SQ's food is not good, as noted by your comments on the return to Singapore. I always imagined SQ's food to be simply outstanding, and it is surprising to see that some of it was actually not terribly good. Thank you for this TR!

Great trip report!

In the picture for the SilverKris lounge in KUL there is a card board woman in a green dress/uniform. Which airline is that for?

I know they often put out these cardboard women to show the lounge is available for other airlines, I'm just not familiar with that uniform...

That is Silkair, SQ's sister airline. In fact, most of SQ's KUL flights are handed over to Silkair.

Great report. I must say the SQ lounge at EWR looks like one of those display rooms at IKEA, not that there is anything wrong with that.

Great report! That's the SAS lounge (SQ doesn't have it's own lounge at Newark) which explains the IKEA design. Im surprised about the presentation of the EWR-SIN food as I did this route back in December and it was fine.

I was very surprised as well, especially when so many here compare them to MH, being a former MH frequent flier I was more the surprised at the differences.

Maybe I just had bad luck? Though the crew commented on the food as well, so it wasn't just me being picky.

SIN-LAX was about 80% ful, EWR-SIN was 100% full

What a wonderful report! I was especially excited to read about Air Asia's new J product. You know, I think they might have a "revolutionary" idea as I'd totally pay-up to those levels than fly Y in a regular airline. It will be interesting to see how their business model continues to perform. I am increasingly becoming a fan of them.

Quoting chrisrad (Thread starter):
Well what can I say, my travelling partner and myself still think MH crew are just that bit better than SQ, the crew on the EWR-SIN sector were definitely not full of smiles that night, not to mention the plane was a bit shabby as well, in the toilet the covers over the waste basket were all broken, held up with tape, I had to tell the FA that they had run out of toilet seat covers and also there were no cups either.

= WOW. I have not flown SQ in a while, but this seems pretty bad. MH crew are a LOT better than SQ for me.

Quoting chrisrad (Thread starter):
Another disappointment would be the lack of a proper amenity kit, I think when you are paying top dollar, something more than $1 socks and an eyeshade would be nice. Admittedly they stock up their lavs with shaving kits, toothbrushes, combs, L'occitane creams and fragrances and mouthwash.

= Ya. And sadly, these "kits" have been the SAME for the longest time!

Quoting chrisrad (Reply 6):
I wouldn't say underwhelming, just I had high expectations as many here carry on about SQ being so superior, the truth is, cabin service and catering wise there is not much difference between them, the only thing they are better in is their hard product.

= I think this summarizes the difference completely!

Thanks again for the report.

Saludos,
A.

We both thought having MH crew onboard SQ product would create the ultimate airline. I can only hope when MH finally get their A380's they will revamp their premium product.
MH crew just seem more genuine and more down to earth in their friendliness, not do everything by the book which seems to be the SQ mentality, prime example was on the EWR-SIN flight we had quite heavy turbulence throughout the flight every single time without fail they would read exactly the same script when the seat belt sign came on, including "we will be suspending the hot beverage service...." even when there absolutely NO service happening in the cabin. This was announced about 10 times.....

This is the very reason MH is number one for me, and always will be. And to be treated like Ro'Y'alt'Y' in Y is just so amazing. I can only imagine what travelling and J and Y on MH would be like. I have never ever seen the same level of genuine and down to earth friendliness on all sectors of any airline as I did with MH. I first thought being a US flight the service was that way, but when that same level of service transferred to a flight to KHI where service levels can drop considerably, I was impressed. That truly made MH stand out!! (Okay I need to work on a my MH photographic flight report soon)

Infact I have sometimes found the regional crews are even friendlier than longhaul, it was the same on SQ some of the best crew I had were on the KUL-SIN sectors, and the Silkair crew were also outstanding.

As much as I love them as well, it's hard to fly them anymore as they are not value for money in Business class from Australia, occasionally there are some deals to be had, but I find their pricing too high for the dated product they have. I'm just hoping with the A380 coming soon then re-vamp their premium products to at least match their competitors, not always be a step behind as they are at the moment.

Catering on SQ is average in my opinion, nothing really stood out.

Couldn't agree more. It's the same in 1st class. I can't understand why so many people think SQ food is so good. I think it is mostly terrible. What a cop out serving ice cream for dessert. I bet the ice cream was as hard as a rock.

Where are all the SQ fans now? Seems very quiet from them. I can see why they do win Airline of the year on occasion, because as a whole most of what they do is good, but then some competitors do other things better. My biggest disappointments were the amenity kit and the food. Biggest highlight was the lounge in T3, the seat was also good, but it's a silly design in the bed mode, the hole where you are supposed to put your feet in is tiny for someone of my height it's not long enough either, I had to be in a weird fetal position to be able to fit on the bed.

Anyway I think this will be my last SQ flights for a while, I'm eyeing the new Oman Air from KUL or BKK to Europe for next year. $6500 AUD to Europe with SQ or $2600, for an even better seat with Oman...

The amenity kits on LH are even crummier. My favorite is the cheap tooth paste even in F.

But don't you get the nice Rimowa cases? They go for a fortune on Ebay!!

I would not expect so much if they weren't a top dollar airline, I can't understand why TG, MH etc can offer something and they can't.
