Hi dear A.net members,

Instead of having a regular holiday or city trip, this summer I decided to make a little tour through Europe. After quiet some planning I eventually came up with 12 flights to be made in 11 days. Some weeks later I added three more flights and one ferry trip. During this trip I would be visiting 6 countries and 12 different airports. This first part of my journey includes coverage of my first two flights. AMS-LCY on CityJet and LHR-CDG on AF.

The morning of my very first flight I was brought to the airport. Since I checked in the day before I only needed do drop of my bag and make my way to the gate. Since The Netherlands were in their school holiday's it wasn't very busy on the A4 towards AMS.

After arriving at the KLM bag drop I had to wait in line for about 15 minutes. After this, passport control was quick and I had time for my cup of pre-flight coffee. While drinking my coffee I decided to have a look at my gate. The Avrojet was already awaiting me after having her night stop.

Here's some brief flight information,

I never flew the Avrojet before, but was warned on the six abreast configuration. Upon boarding everything looked very fine. It became worse after sitting down. Seats were not very wide and leg space was very average. At least the seats were very supportive and high enough.

Departure was on time. We where using runway 36L, which means a very long taxi. Climb-out was nice and the Avro seems to be a fine plane for flying this short leg. From where I was seated, it was impossible to make a decent wing view photo. Seeing the engines was not possible at all.

After this some drinks got served. I've had a very nice cup of coffee and didn't bother the sandwich. I remember it was very turbulent during our descent, and holding on with the coffee was quiet a challenge.

Landing at LCY was the toughest I've ever made. Nose was up for about 6 degrees and the ground was nearing very fast. I think if you weren't prepared, it would have hurted you. My neighbour woke up and started hugging the seat in front of him Big grin At least that was funny.

Arrival at LCY was smooth as usual. Immigration was cleared in 5 minutes and my bag was already circling around on the belt.

I now had 4 hours to make my way to LHR to be flying AF1980. That’s right, the A380 flight. Unfortunately some weeks ago it was downgraded to an A321. I decided on flying it anyway.

I planned on having the DLR to Canning Town, and from there on to ride the tube to LHR. Unfortunately some signal failure that was just solved created a very congested Canning Town. It was impossible for me to even reach the trains. Therefore I decided on continuing on the DLR towards Banks. This took me 40 more minutes. After this I've had a very nice ride to LHR. I was relieved on being on the right train on time.
http://img62.imageshack.us/img62/544/img3501s.jpg

After arriving at LHR's T4 I dropped my bag at the left luggage facility and proceeded through security. The officer decided on being in charge, and asked random people to take of their shoes. Furthermore security was easily cleared. I even had some time left for lunch and coffee. Right after finishing lunch I received a message form Suryo. (Akhmad). He made it in to LHR and we should be meeting at the gate area. After 5 more minutes it was the second time this year I met up with Suryo and his partner. We agreed it was too bad we were flying the A321 and missing our change to meet so many A.net members on one flight. Suryo did meet up with FlyingFinn on the inbound flight though.

Flight crew was really friendly on this flight. The pilots were informing and the FA's looked really pretty. No fake FA smiles on this flight!

During taxi I unfortunately was seated on the wrong side of the plane. As Suryo, seated on 35A spotted all these exotic planes, this was all I've seen.

Take-off was decently powerful and soon we were on our way to Paris.

On this very rare occasion I decided on having coke over coffee. This catering very well matches the interior, what an eye for detail on this flight!

Soon after finishing my coke we started descending into Paris. Descent was smooth and quick. Before I knew it we landed at CDG in Easterly direction. Landing was better this time..

Since I've had 4 hours in Paris I decided on seeing some of the city. A return ticket on the all station service seemed to be nearing 30 euro! That is really expensive. It's not even a dedicated service. I said goodbye to Suryo and tried making the most out of my limited time in Paris.

Train to Paris. You decide what's better. Blurry faces of no faces?

After arriving at the railway station I used the subway to see the Notre Dame. I want to thank Suryo for giving me his still valid subway tickets.

Hey, Tim,

that´s a nice Tuesday evening read.
And it´s even nicer to see now that there is something more coming up from you´re travels.
A really good idea to spend some time this way.

What a pity to miss you on the no A380 leg, maybe another time around Europe.

Looking for more now.

Hi Tim,

Finally! I have been waiting for the first report of your exciting summer holiday. It was great to have a second meet up with you. Furthermore, our A321 flight has got covered from the both sides of the aircraft by now.

Luckily, you did not have to stay on board longer than an hour. Otherwise, it would have got pretty uncomfortable.

Anytime, Tim. It was my partner's idea though.

I think it would not harm that much to show some faces.

Great report, Tim. I really enjoyed it. Thank you for sharing and looking forward to Part 2. Hopefully before the end of this week.

Cheers,
Suryo

Hi Tim,

great report. Yeah, it's right about the space on the Cityjet RJ85's, quite limited and not comfortable in my opinion. Give me the BA Emb170s or VLM/Cityjet F50 (from RTM) anytime instead.
btw, I was around CDG also that day, flying CDG-BSL v.v. I didn't know that you got so much spare time to visit the city. We could've make some arrangement maybe during that afternoon.

Regards
Eric

Hi Tim.

Most enjoyable report. I'm not instantly attracted to those Avrojets either but they do look superb on descent into LCY so that is one advantage!

I think I must be one of the list still to partake in the A380 mission to CDG but I would dearly like to write a TR but I wear that readers are quite well versed in what to expect on the LHR-CDG A380 shuttle! I feel as though I've already taken the trip myself...

Hi TIm!

Nice to read another account from that very familiar day. Looks like we flew the same airlines (and of course the same plane and seat as well) on the same day.

Quoting vandenheuvel (Thread starter):

That sounds like my kind of holiday! Looks like there's plenty to read to look forwards from you!

Quoting vandenheuvel (Thread starter):
Seats were not very wide and leg space was very average.

Next time you should try one of the 2 seaters in the last three (?) rows, those are a bit more comfortable although the leg room remains low, but at least you can stow your bag between your seat and the wall instead of under the seat in front of you which gives you some more space!

Quoting vandenheuvel (Thread starter):
Landing at LCY was the toughest I've ever made. Nose was up for about 6 degrees and the ground was nearing very fast. I think if you weren't prepared, it would have hurted you.

Oh yes, the famous City landing, something which I've yet to experience, despite departing from LCY twice.

Quoting vandenheuvel (Thread starter):
LHR to be flying AF1980

Err, isn't the return flight AF1981?

Quoting vandenheuvel (Thread starter):
Leg space. Just a short hour ago, A.net member Flyingfinn76 was seated on this very seat. 35F.

Heh, this brought a smile to my face and a warm and fuzzy feeling to me. I should've left some easter eggs hidden there.

Quoting vandenheuvel (Thread starter):
I know for a fact that I was not the first person in this seat today that gets excited about seeing this 757!

Am I building a reputation or what?

Quoting vandenheuvel (Thread starter):
After reading so many negative stories about CDG and AF I was relieved over this very nice flight. Also the extreme chaos at CDG seems to be a bit overreacted.

CDG can be nice or an absolute madhouse, depending on the time of the day, your terminal and what you are actually trying to do. The 2E (and F and G) are the newest parts of it and very nice actually. The older parts of two, A-D are horrible, cramped, ugly, old fashioned and when packed with people just claustrophobic. Terminal 1, while having a nice retro look from the sixties and some funky space age architecture (just think of the tubes in the middle, now what is that all about?!) is basically falling apart, a very tatty place!

Quoting vandenheuvel (Thread starter):
Since I've had 4 hours in Paris I decided on seeing some of the city. A return ticket on the all station service seemed to be nearing 30 euro! That is really expensive. It's not even a dedicated service.

Oh yes, they are really charging a premium on the RER services to CDG! If you try pricing a ticket to the stop just before CDG (Expo something if my memory serves me right) you will notice it costs about half the price as a ticket to CDG, despite the distance between the two stations being just a few kilometers. Unfortunately there doesn't appear to be a cheaper alternative, even the Les Cars Air France buses charge quite a hefty price for the ride to the city (and at rush hour that's much slower than the train, although in light traffic it is comparable).

Eagerly looking for more!

I'm sure about that. Just a nice regional plane, nothing more. I had to put it on my log anyway. So I'm glad it's there now.

Hi Eric, thanks for your reply. I've tried the BA ERJ170 by now. It's indeed so much better. It's even cheaper. If the F50's are carrying the old VG interior, they must be so much better too.

If your in the opportunity you should try this service yourself. It's probably well worth it when operated by the A380.

Quoting FlyingFinn76 (Reply 5):

I was seated on the very last seatrow. On the back the aircraft is so much smaller that it's the same as with the 3-3 seats. I think the first row of 2 are the most comfortable. As it isn't that small there.

Quoting FlyingFinn76 (Reply 5):

More will follow soon.
