My original schedule show´s these flights for the 12th of July.
Very nice A.net member Infodesk/Hannah decides to join the list for the flights together with a good number
of more colleagues.
Reaching CDG with a good time puffer isn´t easy, we decide to go also together
MLH-CDG-MLH which isn´t expensive to book good in advance as a french domestic service,
also with interesting equipment.
Well, the company which operates the big birdie taking good care of us customers.
They send me a SMS notice and also calling me on the phone that there is only the usual equipment on the flight´s date.
Now I know what they do with it, airlineroute shows a extra flight CDG-JNB-CDG to carry football fans back from the games in South Africa at Sunday /Monday.
What to do now?.
A couple of mails in and out, Hannah done rebookings for the 5th of July and finally my biz schedule allows me also to do this.
The german callcenter told me, that it is not possible to change the flights.
But AF Paris going to switch the CDG-LHR-CDG flights without extra cost, no way for the separate booking MLH-CDG-MLH, that means to cancel these legs and book it again.
No tax refund fee with AF, the original booking is mainly taxes and fees, so it is acceptable.
Enough talking, let´s go with the story.

Service Air France 3281 operated by Regional CAE
Scheduled: 06.50 // 08.00
There is no seatmap during the OLCI process at AF´s website, but there is also KL
to do. From previous experiences I give it a try and it is possible there to reseat for my preffered
place, last row window, finally two for me with a load close to 100%.
Me in 20A and Hannah also with two seats in 20F.
The fare is some 90.00 Euro´s, business done by Exp., leg 1 and 4 together.
Meeting time at MLH is 05.45 am, that means leaving home at 04.15 am, for the usual 1 hour 30 minutes drive. My cellphone is calling me at 03.15 am, pretty early, but early enough?.
Fog at the black forest heights, fog?. It´s July, but it is foggy, much more truck traffic than my expectations and so I´am in Freiburg at our meeting time. A short call and further
racing down the motorway. Hannah send me an SMS that she´s going trough security at 06.15 am.
And me, parking the car, wait some five minutes at the pretty slow check´s and at the gate when boarding start´s. Now thats well using the time, isn´t it?.
Not at all that Hannah is going a little bit nervous!.
A view to the screen seems nevertheless possible, gate 1 today
The apron with our plane at the finger
I prefer this for any sub service needs, Hello and the MD90
F-HBXJ and some orange departure
Well, anyone remember how a new plane smells?.
The scheduled Embraer 170 is here, it made it´s first appearance under European skies at
30.06.2010, that means only five days after delivery it´s our turn to fly on this machine.
Leg no. 4 for me only on type and well, a pretty new registration.
One of 10 in the Regional fleet.
A view to the modern terminal
The good looking cabin fitted with dark blue leather seats, clean, modern style, good legroom.
And the cute safety card
Like this style
Cockpit crew is from France, the captain with a friendly welcome during boarding.
3000 meters to go now, 3900 meters is the whole length
Turning on runway 15, it is 06.50 am, ontime, some 35 minutes after my arrival here.
Light clouds only and 20 degrees that early in the morning
And a sunny departure
Two, let me say, biz friendly female FA´s doing the job.
Some clouds above the Rhine valley
And someone told me, that this is the Montblanc in the background
Service is water/coffee/tea and a brioche for free.
Turning for finals into CDG
Touchdown on the 2700 meters runway 26L, it is 07.50 am, ten minutes ahead to schedule, sunny with 17 degrees.
Waiting for another departure from 26R
Taxi along the terminal, any big birds here?
Yes, so it seems

Service AF 1980 operated by Air France
Scheduled: 10.05 // 10.25
OLCI, this time with the seatmap, is done here also via KL´s website, the fare
is some 40,00 Euro´s, booking by Exp., leg 2 and 3 together.
Prepare yourself for a very long connecting time, whenever use this place.
T2G is a newly built terminal for the regional services far from the other terminals.
Passport control is at T2G in a pretty small waiting area for the bus to T2E.
Our flight on the board seems ontime from gate E53
The big birdie from behind
The tail and registration shot from the bus
It is F-HPJB, one of 3 A380-800s now in service with AF.
Delivery date is 10.02.2010, not that new like the earlier plane, but also not oldfashioned!.
Premiere for me, the first time on the A380.
The nice and well dimensioned gate area
The sun is so bright, nearly impossible to do pictures
Nose close up
Modern style gate monitors
We´re not alone here, another A.net colleague is also on the flight.
Very friendly member AYA333/Janni going in contact with Hannah and so we meet him at the gate.
The view from the other side
Some nice aviation discussion and else let the time go by very fast at the gate.
Well designed for the A380
So, we waving goodbye to Janni, he´s doing the upperdeck on the outbound leg and we´re staying downstairs for some window seats
No question, this is the A380
Looks like a matchbox truck
Impressive engines
En detail
And again, no question, these are the right tyres here
Now at the planes door
View from my seat 34A, main deck, all seats taken around me.
It was the only available window during OLCI, Hannah is also on the main deck, more in the rear of the cabin.
Two ever sleeping girls, the "dont ask me what plane I´am flying" type, in the seats beside me, good for me doing pictures.
Dark, blue grey fabric seats, clean, comfortable feeling, good legroom.
Bienvenue a bord
I don´t count the FA´s. The staff on the main deck is ok, but nothing really special.
The load is 100% so it seems, no open seat to see,
also pax on the waiting list screen during boarding.
Another cute safety card
Cockpit crew is from France, the captain with a very friendly welcome during boarding.
Now that´s a massive wing
What a pretty roomy feeling here
And a small Airbus narrowbodie on taxi for the active
A view to the terminal
Close to the entrance for the 4200 meter runway 27L.
It is 10.20 am, 15 minutes late, light clouds and 18 degrees.
Tail camera view
Continental ahead
Ukraine International need to wait
On the run for 45 minutes to LHR
Delta Skyteam on the taxiway
Easy lift off, unbelievable
Like a much smaller plane
Emerging the clouds
Service is free water, coffee, tea.
More clouds ahead
On approach to LHR with another friendly goodbye from the captain.
Going down
No preference for big birds here, holding
The cabin is really quiet, like some other´s stated also.
With my seat directly above the wing and the undercarriage I feel every
technical detail direct.
Not bad, but also not expected here on this modern plane.
Also inflight, it shakes around like a much smaller machine, you dont feel like you fly such a big bird.
Close to touchdown
Now that´s what I call flaps
Touchdown is really rough, that´s pretty hard work for the undercarriage with that heavy weight.
View through the wing
Heavy braking action
Slowing down on the 3901 meters runway 27R. It is 10.30 am here in the UK, 11.30 am in Germany,
finally five minutes late.
The temperature is also 18 degrees and light clouds.
Au revoir
My comfortable seat during disembarking
AF making a bit more than standard flying here, they hand out a A380 certificate at the planes door,
thanks to Hannah, I don´t mention it.
LHR T4 is not that well in preparations like CDG.
It isn´t possible to connect the finger to the main deck´s door, so all the pax going upstairs to disembark trough the upper deck finger

Service AF 1981 operated by Air France
Scheduled: 12.50 // 15.05
No need for immigrations into the UK here, a door leads directly to a security checkpoint and further to the T4 gate area.
Some five minutes to wait there.
A good number of people around and impressive to see how much pax doing the out and inbound flight together.
LHR T4 with its narrow ceiling is not my favourite place and also with that huge number of pax, not that easy to go for comfortable seating.
Starbucks is ready to serve us some coffee and chai latte,
time now for some more interesting talking prior to the return flight.
The board with our flight back to CDG, the fare some unbelievable 40.00 Euro´s.
Heavy metal Qantas and Malaysia
Gate 6 for CDG
Ground handling
Such a pretty machine
The small Malaysia plane on taxi
Boarding now for the upperdeck flight back to CDG, A388 leg no.2.
The big wing
At the planes door
No, that are not our seats
And also not this examples
Exit row for me, 91K this time, no upper deck windows, but ok to walk a bit around later in the flight
A young french guy in the window seat without a window, in this row.
No german, no english and me not that really fluent in french, so conversation was limited.
A view to the FA´s seat, the staff here on the upperdeck is much nicer than on the lower deck outbound.
The load is again close to 100%, no open seat to see all around.
The cabin ceiling
With the tail camera
We´re taking an early entrance to runway 27L
and using not the full 3658 meters, like a much smaller plane.
What an impressive powerfull takeoff.
It is 1.15 pm, 25 minutes late, 2.15 pm in Germany, the temperature is again 18 degrees with light clouds.
50 minutes now to go for Paris.
The french pilot with a friendly welcome, the same style like on the earlier flight.
My monitor
With some features around the flight
Some heavy shakers on the way, once again it doesn´t feel like the A380, more than a much smaller plane while it jumps around.
Stairs up and down
Cabin view
The captain is once more on the speakers while starting our descent into CDG in a friendly style.
Service is snack, water, coffee, tea for free.
Clouds ahead
Touchdown is on the 2700 meters runway 27R, it is 3.15 pm, ten minutes late, the sky is partly cloudy and the temperature is 22 degrees.

Staying airside at T2E is not possible without a proper boarding pass from that area.
So the decision is to walk around, explore the airport terminals and stop for some nice coffee together.
There is a free bus shuttle service between the terminals, so something for us to do with that pretty warm weather.

Finally time to head for the bus to Terminal 2G, also the arrivals place from earlier in the day.
My first time to depart from this area.
It looks like new and well lit, the interior in different colours like these place for the Navette shuttles
No one in front at security, Hannah goes shopping and me watching the regional movements.
Ah, it looks like it´s time to go for the gate, G30 this time.
A view to the central waiting area, fresh colours and nice design here, together with a good number of pax for AF regional services.
What about the 500th built E-jet, parking on the apron
Walking to our gate and closer to the special example, it´s an E70 like our schedule
More nice colours here close to the gates, a good idea from my point of view
And it happens, this is definitely our ride back to MLH
The nose close up
With the golden number
Air France by Regional, good looking
A new registration for me, F-HBXC, leg no. 5 on type. In service with Regional since 07.12.2008.
The last row, 20A/F again on this flight, the load ist some 90% and we both see no one on the seats between us.
Dark blue leather seats in the cabin, clean, good legroom.
The captain with a friendly welcome during boarding.
Not that long to taxi and departure from runway 26R, ontime, sunny and 25 degrees.
The duration is 45 minutes.
Two ok friendly female FA´s on this service.
Above Le Bourget airport
And a scenic flight close to the city center
Directly above the city
What a nice view
And above CDG in the other direction
Service is biscuit and free drinks.
The cute safety card
And the clean cabin
Flaps set for approach into MLH
All my flights into MLH heading to the south, up the Rhine valley,
not this time, we´re doing a couple of circles and flying above the city
for a runway 33 arrival, ten minutes ahead to schedule with lot´s of sun all around and 26 degrees.
Oldfashioned cargo metal on the apron
Really nice guys upfront.
A short chat and a view into that very modern looking cockpit.
Out of the plane and in the public in no time.
Doing a last espresso/tea together from the Autogrill bar and on the way back home.
Now the usual 1 hour 35 minutes, much more needed in the morning.
Thanx, Hannah for the nice companion. That was a really fullfilled and succesful day, both aviationwise an also everything around. We should do it once again!.
What about the highlights?.
Sure, the A380, real comfortable, from my point of view, but also both E-Jets are something special.
Anyone here on Facebook?.

Hi Markus,
Glad to hear and see that you finally managed to get on board the A380. I do agree with you on the turbulence. Coming back from Singapore once and over the Bay of Bengal, it was horrendous. But saying that when I was on the 747 it didn't seem as bad!

That's quite pathetic. Was it not working or had the aircraft been stopped in the wrong position? Either way its something to sort out. I'm sure the staff would have got an ear full if the aircraft had landed after a long haul flight.
I saw that you travelled on the 5th and if I had come in from New York the day before, I might have seen you as I also flew into T4 with KU.

Quoting AYA333 (Reply 11): I was a bit surprised that we had to go through security at LHR again. I´ve always thought that only pax arriving from somewhere outside EU should do it.
That's the UK - there's no such thing as "airside connection" there (ok, sometimes you could do this at LHR T1 back in the days if you got lucky, but I'm not sure if it is possible anymore) - the local government regulations state that all arriving and departing pax must be separated, which also leads to the requirement of having to rescreen pax when moving between these two zones. That is something which makes connecting in the UK always a bit of a hassle and not as straightforward as in the less paranoid countries.

Hi Markus! Very nice report with great pictures! I'm glad you were able to go on the 380 and also nice to have travel compannion!

Need a Boeing 777 Firing Order....Further to fly....GA, T5, CI and LX 777s
This terminal looks so different from where the A321 left on my fligth. It looks great though.
Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter): Two ever sleeping girls, the "dont ask me what plane I´am flying" type, in the seats beside me, good for me doing pictures.
I wonder me what such persons are thinking while boarding such a plane on this route. Even they must be surprised.
I'm glad for you that you've managed to do the rebookings and to fly the A380. I'm glad you've had a nice day and enjoyed flying.

Hi Markus,
Looks like a real good day of flying, 2 new E170's and the A380 on lower and upper decks, very nice indeed.
Still a shame AF changed the equipment on our original date, would have been great to get the 'gang' together, another time.
Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter): spending a week without flying is nice, with the warm summer weather here in middle Europe,
but a little bit more flying is also nice, isn´t it?.
- Hmm, looks like an AF 77W to me..................

I do agree with you on the turbulence. Coming back from Singapore once and over the Bay of Bengal, it was horrendous. But saying that when I was on the 747 it didn't seem as bad!
What's it with the Bay of Bengal and turbulence? I've also had the worst turbulence of my life over the very same stretch of ocean!
- Me too, was bloody rough when crossing on a QR 77W in March this year, worse I've ever experienced.

And also a pity that I cannot join the BA747 run.
Quoting BA319-131 (Reply 19): So long as I fly every month all is good

Hi Markus,
Another great report, how lucky to experience both the lower and upper decks on the first flights on the whale. Nice pics, especially from above Paris - it really shows the spread of the city
Always! I won't turn down a quick flight during uni especially!
Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter): Two ever sleeping girls, the "dont ask me what plane I´am flying" type, in the seats beside me, good for me doing pictures.
Very much so.
Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter): The cabin is really quiet, like some other´s stated also.
Did you notice any difference between the decks for the level of noise at take off?
Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter): AF making a bit more than standard flying here, they hand out a A380 certificate at the planes door
That's very nice! Not even EK did that for their inaugural flights for Y passengers..

It feels more quiet at the upper deck.
