My maiden post. Decided to post my past trip reports after reading many wonderful ones in this forum

About me: In my final year of university now, always loved traveling, seeing new cultures and lands. Not a frequent flier here. I travel on average once or twice a year. Usually travel in coach but it had always been a dream of mine to try SQ's First Class. Before this trip I had only taken SQ once, on a short flight to Jakarta with my sis when she was an off-duty "Singapore Girl" on a holiday. Ever since then I mainly took NW, UA, MH and AA and a few others.

Planning
Decided to go to Hong Kong for a short holiday last year with a friend. Saved up for that elusive SQ First Class I always dreamed of traveling on.. Damned SQ marketing people! A week before the trip, my mate changed his mind and I ended up going alone. grr.. Hong Kong was okay but boring since I was there alone and cant speak a word of Cantonese.. Lived in Singapore most of my life so English (or Singlish if you will!) is the only language I can speak well.

I eventually settled for a mix-itinerary F-outbound, Y-inbound trip. Made my booking through their booking centre. I learnt about their Book the Cook feature and ordered the Chilean Sea Bass option for my main course.

As excited as I was, I took lots of trip of my outbound flight. Wanted to take some of the return in Y which was great too but I was too tired and Y was full. Didn’t want to look like a freak snapping away at everything lol.

Day of departure
My flight was at 5pm but I decided to leave for the airport at 9am. I love Changi, there's just so much to there- all the leisure facilities, the (window) shopping options, and I just like the whole vibe of the airport.

My older sis, the former SQ stewardess and her daughter came over to my place and accompanied me to the airport. Got a cab and reached there in 15. Would usually take a train, only takes me 30minutes to get to the airport station from my place and it’s convenient but I had two large bags with me for this 4-day trip. Yes, I suffer from OPS- over-packing syndrome. My idea of necessities tends to encompass a wider array of things, my clothes and toiletries also take up a fair bit of space haha.

Thought I'd try SQ's First Class Check-In suite. Its just before the main part of T3 when you take a cab there. A porter opened the door, greeted me with a warm smile and took my bags although I told him I could manage.

An agent simultaneously asked for my BP, greeted me by name and by the time I walked in it seemed like my check-in was already in progress. The First Class check-in facility was empty except for the three of us. The two agents started a little conversation and I realised they were around my age and Singaporean.. Getting quite rare to find Sporeans working in the service industry here, almost everyone I see working in the malls or even the airport here these days are usually from other Asian countries.

Check in was complete in an instant. Before I left she handed me an invitation to The Private Room, another lounge within the First Class lounge I heard a lot about. Waived the friendly agents goodbye and decided to get a coffee with my sis and niece before heading to the elusive Silverkris Lounges I heard so much about.

The Private Room invitation
Lounge
Parted with them after coffee. Went in to transit area and walked right up to the Silverkris lounge, the striking words on the marble always got me wanting to know what it was like inside this exclusive lounge.

Entrance

The agents at the entrance were nice. Greeted me, as for my BP and later offered to show me around the lounge.

It was glossy, relatively empty in J and completely empty in F and TPR. This was 11am in the morning. Food looked good but looked rather similar in both F and J. TPR had a tiny buffet spread but the key attraction here is the fine-dining style a la carte option.

I actually liked the J section best. Wide, spacious and cozy. The F section looked more exclusive but not as cozy.

As for TPR I know a bit of institutional history here. It was a failed concept. They created it to be a lounge only for paid F pax, no redeemed F. Resulted in many unhappy peeps who forked out hundreds of thousand of hard earned miles for an F ticket on SQ. They now allow all F pax to use the lounge. I think TPR would be best as a lounge for pax traveling on the Suites though. At least then there will be some ground benefit for flying R which is noticeably pricer than F.

Anyway, TPR was nice too. Nice leather seats, two wide TVs, loved the dinning area.

The Private Room

T3 F Section

T3 J Section

Got a pasta dish in TPR then went to the F Section for some cheeses. I love cheese! A friendly Australian dude on his way to CGK in F started a conversation. Chatted for an hour before I decided to check out the Krisflyer Gold lounge just outside.

Didn’t take any pics of that lounge. It’s a lounge for StarA Gold pax if I remembered right. Was decent but definitely nowhere as nice as Silverkris.

After that I walked around the shops in T3, bought a book.

I then decided to check out the T2 Silverkris. The entrance showed that the F section was on the right and “Raffles Class” on the left. Raffles Class sure does sound a lot less generic than Business but I understand the pitching problems it supposedly had especially with non-Singaporeans, or maybe even with Singaporeans since the Raffles brand tends to be synonymous with the best in its class here and maybe that conflicted with how they branded their First Class. Just a guess..

The Indonesian agent at the entrance was friendly as well. He told me I could use the lounge but highlighted that I could use the “better” T3 one. Had a brief chat with him (yes I talk to everyone! Lol). According to him, a lot of FFs actually prefer the T2 lounge they consider more cozy than the contemporary, chic T3 one.

Walked around the F and J Sections. Yes it did look cozy but I found the décor and furniture dated. Almost felt like I went into a time machine and went back to a time before I was born lol. The fish tanks and little armchairs screamed 80s or what I’d imagine the 80s to be. Love 80s music though but I degrees…

Got a bit more cheese in here! And a drink… A mixture of some liquors I knew little about. Tasted horrible. bleah. Okay, not much of a drinker here though I don’t mind an occasional glass of wine.

T2 Entrance, F and J sections

I later walked went to T1. Nothing much there now, probably not till its major revamp is over in 2012 I think.

It was 3.30 and I thought I’d head back to T3 Silverkris to chill for awhile (and get more cheese:P).

The flight
Reached my gate a couple of mines after it opened. There was no queue. Guess most people had gotten in already.

Boy was as I excited as a little boy walking into a big theme park, as I walked across the aerobridge.

Two Singapore Girls and a Singapore Boy welcomed me onboard by name. The Singapore Boy was a green tie, a Leading Steward. One Singapore Girl was in a green Kebaya and the other was the, I realized, rare purple Kebaya, a female Inflight Supervisor, Yvone. There are supposedly more of them now but the guys still outnumber them in this rank. On the 6 legs I’ve had on SQ the past two years, it was the only time I saw a female IFS. The purple Kebaya looked great though.

I learnt I was the only one traveling in F that day. This was in the middle of the financial meltdown and the height of the SARS scare but J was nearly full and so was Y.

The cabin crew were simply amazing. They spent most of the 3.5hour journey talking to me seeing how sparkly eyed and excited I was lol.

Talked about Sg, travel SQ, my sister’s cabin crew stories, how I actually thought of becoming a Singapore Boy last year and a whole lot of stuff.

Yvone asked if I wanted a tour of the aircraft. I agreed. When we got back she showed me how to make the bed and prepared the one next to me should I decide to take a nap!

I then noticed someone got upgraded on the other side of the cabin. PPS perhaps?

Cabin shots- sorry it turned out so blur
Got some Krug. Loved it!
Meal Service
The meal service was wonderful as well. For the first course I took a meaty option. God knows why I did, I’m not much of a meat eater. The Leading Stewardess noticed I didn’t quite like it (god they’re amazing!) from the way I picked at it with my form and offered to get me the caviar option. Loved it!

Every single course was lovely and when Yvone brought out the cheese platter and saw how I looked at it, she said “I know just what to get you”- she came back with a dinning plate full of lots of cheese. She sure read me right!

Ended it with a cup of tea and some pralines I chomped down, forgetting to save for the camera. Yvone asked if I’d like an alcoholic drink, offering to bring me samples of same. I decided to settle for the Port that she recommended. Was good.

Meal Service

Caviar... which I had already dug into

Cheese- got a lot more after this!

How 3.5hours passed so fast was beyond me. It was soon time to land   Boy I wish I could stay on the plane for its next leg to San Francisco. Chatted with the crew a little more and checked out the Krisworld IFE offerings.

I had then arrived in HK.

My return trip in Y was great too. Definitely the best experience I’ve had in Y up till then. I heard of how the crew are busy on this relatively short but full-service sector but they took the time to make it a nice. The crew always refilled my drinks, chatted a little and a steward came by and said welcome home before offering me a second portion of ice cream after the meal service.

I then fell in love with SQ! So much for the myth that SQ cabin crew are robotic. Every trip I had in SQ since this was as good, the crew polished but warm, friendly and very personal even in Y.

That’s it for first TR. Hope you had fun reading it! Feel free to comment or ask any questions. I’ll post my recent flight from Japan in J soon

Great trip report! I looked back at my old pictures of when I flew SQ F from SIN to LAX and I had dinner in the Private Room and I think I was at the same table you were at!

I agree, Changi is just a treasure and it does take several hours to really do/see everything there!

Hong Kong is anything but boring. I've been there by myself and had a great time. Also I saw that a lot of people spoke English so the language barrier wasn't really that much of an issue.

I've been the only pax in F once back in 2006 with Gulf Air and I loved it. The attention you get was great. Always asking if I was okay or I heeded a top up of my drink. They even gave me a bottle of champagne to take home with me.

I've sure it could have been interesting. I think its just that I didnt have enough to find what would've been of interest to me there and I hadn't expected to go alone.

Most people I met spoke little English. A HK friend of mine later suggested they could be mainlanders, as they term them. Supposedly, the people of Hong Kong are generally fluent in both Cantonese and English.

In Singapore, we take English as our first language and second language is a choice of Malay/Mandarin/Tamil or another ethnic language. I shouldn't complain.. I'd imagine a lot of visitors to Sg would grapple with our breed of English aka Singlish although we're supposedly native English speakers.. and we do so badly at the ethnic languages, the government has constantly been revamping their syllabuses and the way they're taught- a mainstay in the newspapers here. Not quite the most linguistically-inclined lot we are.

Sounds like quite an experience you had on Gulf Air! Got a TR on it?:P

To be honest in Asia I found Singapore to be the easiest place to visit in terms of speaking English. I've never had a problem there and love the city. Can't wait to go back sometime soon for a few days.

Unfortunately I don't have a TR for the GF as this was a while back before I started writing TR's and joining A.net.

Well done, that was a VERY good First TR. A little tip for you, pinch the menu and then scan it once you get home, then all us foodies can read the menu choices you had.
Looks like you really enjoyed that outing, great envy of you.

Yup.. It is indeed sadened to see that many Singaporeans gradually lose their jobs and replaced by "skilless FTs !!"   . I feel that old Singaporean hospitality may gone forever unless someone do something about the situation . For what I have encountered, Singaporeans speaks better English than the new FTs. I have recently called up to a Lufthansa Office in Singapore and there 's this Filipino lady speaking to me. Normally , people understands what I mean clearly but she have a lack of vocabulary. She don't understand what I am talking about and I have to shout at her in the phone from start to end!! Bravo! Good job Lufthansa for employing such a good customer Service Officer!!  Now, there 's the Filipino , Burmese , Laos , Cambodia , Indians , China people and Banglas everywhere around the corner. All these people are full of junk as they don't speak good english and take over our jobs happily and their service are mostly crapped out . So our future maybe bad thanks to the two idiots that caused the problem!!

Definitely no generalizations in those statements...   And using the term "Banglas" is very derogatory.

hmm.. That's harsh. I don't think that generalisation is fair though. Since Singaporeans don't want to take up jobs in the frontlines of the service industry, its fine getting foreigners here I feel but they must be well integrated into our society, like they should recieve proper English language training. The government is finally imposing minimum English language standards but very late IMO. I've enountered many nice, helful Filipinos in the service industry here.

Well a quick look at posts on local forums like the Sg Club Forums, Hardware Zone and VRZone show that a lot of Singaporeans are unhappy that there are just too many foreigners here these days. I blame the government. They've got good Economists but lack Sociologists I'd say...

Their policy of getting in large number of foreigners to boost the economy since the past few years works (the ratio of Sporeans to foreigners expected to hit 1:1 soon!), the Economy is expected to grow a stggering 15% this year. but I think they haven't fully considered that this has alienated the local population base who've rapidly over the past 4 generations grown to consider themselves something of a Singaporean race in a cultural sense, thanks ironically to good government policies that got Sinaporeans of various ethnic groups to integrate (e.g English as first language for all schools, ethnic quotas in every neighbourhood).

Personally, I think the way forward would best be for the Malaysian and Singapore governments to work towards a common market to encourage bilateral trade and labour exchange between both sides of the Causeway. Bilateral trade between Sg and My has been growing rapidly every year but it has a lot more potential, a win-win for both sides... And most of us can relate better to Malaysians who we share the most cultural ties with

And I realise we're going way off topic here

I have a friend who scored straight As at English here including his O Levels (A UK standard we take here) but when he got to Japan to teach English, he was initially rejected. He eventually got the job at a different school but at the school he earlier applied at, basically their idea of a native English speaker is someone blond haired and blue eyed. Yeap, blatant racial discrimination.

Oh, you've been to Kumar's show. heh.. love her. Yeap, that's Singlish at its best. Well I'd speak in "Singlish" with my local friends but in "standard" English with my friends from abroad :P

Yup to be fair , I mentioned that not all FTs are useless. Only some are , others are like very helpful as you have said. Oh, BTW , I agree to your opinion that the government is horrible right now. They brought lots of wrong bunch of people instead which is bad actually. The government actually starts programmes on training the FTs because they must be fedup of complaints by us otherwise we will not give them face   BTW, your trip report is really good.

Anyways, fascinating trip report. Thanks for sharing it. I guess I am with you - I think T3 is just not my liking. I find it a little too shiny. Good to see SQ have another consistent flight. As much as I think there are better crews in several airlines around the world, the consistency of SQ crew must be lauded.

Really impressive first TR. Keep it up!

Very nice report, Darren. I took SQ F from FRA to SIN last year (raided my frequent flyer bank basically). and it was great!

Regarding your post on foreigners, I agree with you to some extent. However you want to enjoy your noodles for $2.50 and Coke for $1.20. With rents being so high in Singapore, the only way to do that is to cut labour costs. The Singaporean would never work for $1200 a month as a waiter but Chinese nationals would gladly do it 12 hours a day 6 days a week. As such you can get such cheap food.

As Singaporeans, we do not want to pay more for things. We basically want first world services at third world prices. Evidently something will have to give. Are you prepared to pay $8 for your noodles so that a Singaporean will serve you?

On the other hand, productivity levels in our service industry are appalling. Seriously, why is it every Chinese restaurant seems to have 20 Chinese national waiters/waitresses standing around doing nothing?

Well some of it was that her jokes were very topical and tailored to the Singaporean audience....

So at one point she told people not to drink and drive, but if they do they should make sure to hit Singaporeans so they don't look racist... EVERYONE laughed and I didn't get it at all...UNTIL the taxi ride to the hotel afterwards. We passed a police check point and the driver told me that just the other day some guy got drunk and drove across Singapore and hit a whole bunch of Malay night shift workers who were walking to work....

This whole language switching is just very odd to me as an American since we pretty much talk the same way all the time. Of course with friends I might use swear words or say certain words that I wouldn't use in a work setting...but the actual language is the same...

Before I went to Singapore I saw this click and found it pretty interesting...

Docpepz: Exactly, Singaporeans have to expect to pay more. My point howeverwas there's nothing wrong having foreigners here, I think its flattering that lots of people want to come here for work and it contributes to the diversity of our country. But the thing is they need to invest a little in better training. Like English training especially. Would not cost much if its done by the Ministry of Manpower on a large scale, since they're the regulatory body.

burj: Sounds morbid, I'd imagine but yeap that's her style, very colorful and in-your-face. Her show's very popular here.

Cysafan: Yeap, I loved the desserts and food there in general.

My maiden post. Decided to post my past trip reports after reading many wonderful ones in this forum

Nice report. Thanks! Many, many years ago I flew F/Class on SQ from KUL-SIN. It was really cheap.

You may have reached the call center of Lufthansa since most airline offices don't list their numbers anymore.

Being a foreigner here in SIN myself, I sometimes wonder about the "hostility" against foreigners. Do Singaporeans want to do all these jobs, e.g., waiters, construction workers, etc.? Are Singaporeans qualified to do the skilled work for which white-collar foreigners are brought in (because white-collar workers they are not as cheap as Chinese waiters)?
