INTRODUCTION


Dear fellow A.netters,

Welcome to the second part of my trip report series and allow me to show you our journey from Munich to Doha with Qatar Airways. Furthermore, you will find the part “Book Flights” as the itinerary was put together through QR website.

TRAVEL PLANNING

Book Flights


For our last trip with QR nearly two years ago, we made a reservation through an appointed sales representative in Netherlands as we could not book any flight online from Amsterdam. But this situation has been changed since last year, so we consulted QR website directly. We enjoyed flying Business Class with QR very much, so we decided to do the same again.

Our first time experience of booking through QR’s website was not disappointing. Just as fellow A.netter Markus (FLIEGER67) had mention in his trip report The Emirates Explorer: Dubai And Al-Ain On Qatar (by FLIEGER67 Nov 14 2009 in Trip Reports), we were able to preselect our seats and insert our APIS details during the booking process. Unlike our previous experience with Korean Air, our E-tickets were issued immediately after the credit card verification was completed.

As Markus rightly pointed out, you cannot do another seat change anymore on QR’s website until they release the online check-in period. But, as our itinerary was put together in conjunction with LH, the seat change could instead be done on LH website. We did not to use it though as we were quite happy with our seat selection. However, this feature seemed available only to passengers holding J or perhaps full-fare Y tickets. My partner were not entitled to pre-select seat when he flew LH on a discounted Y fare last March.

It looked like that we made our reservation just right on time as, when I checked a similar itinerary about a week later, the fare went up to more than two times the price we had paid. However after four months, the fare went down to even below our price and later on rising again. Sigh, airline fare structure cannot be fathomed sometimes.

Both my partner and I acknowledged the fact that each of us had sufficient miles for an one-way upgrade from J to First Class. Hence we made an upgrade request for the flight from MUC to Doha subsequently. Unfortunately, QR was unable to process our request, as there were no redemption seats available on F on our desired flight. Strange! And how about DOH-MUC? Well, again that was simply out of the question. Bummer!  

We have had pretty intensive correspondence with QR customer service regarding our upgrade request until we found out that as member of Privilege Club, QR’s frequent flyer program, we were able to check the award ticket availability online. Quite easy and hassle free.
I thought, “All right then! We will closely keep an eye on it and one day, those F seats will be ours!” or not….

Halfway January, I was very pleased to notice an equipment change for our return flight from DPS. QR would send their B777-300ER instead of the initially planned A330-200. Finally, I would be able to go on board of a B77W.  

Anyway, it was time again to focus on upgrading our travel class. We resubmitted our upgrade request about three days prior to our departure.

Unfortunately, QR could not again process our request on that Monday when we were leaving. Little I knew that the whole F cabin was actually fully booked. I thought we might probably be allowed to upgrade at the airport. Let’s see how it would come out.

Online Check-in


I could barely sleep before the opening hours of the online check-in. When the clock finally hit 04.30, I jumped out of my bed and preparing for checking in. I found out that the online check-in facility was only available for QR’s segments. So, I would have to wait for another seven hours to do the LH segment.

The whole check-in process was swift, but since our tickets were bought online with my partner’s credit card, we were issued confirmation passes for the MUC-DOH leg instead of boarding passes like the onward DOH-KUL. The confirmation passes could be exchanged for boarding passes upon presenting the credit card. Interesting measurements against fraud.

AT THE AIRPORT


The passport control was painless. We were in no time in the non-Schengen area. We made quickly our way to gate H26.

While passing by Lufthansa Service Center, we thought that we would be able to get our boarding passes there.



Instead we were directed straight to the gate.

Gate H26 was still unmanned when we arrived.





The gate area was crowded already.



My partner had to go to the toilet. I decided to stay in front of the empty desks which turned out a wise thing to do as there are people who needed to exchange their check-in confirmations. They got off their chairs and queuing behind me not long after my partner left.

Finally a male LH gate agent showed up. At 10.55 he got himself prepared to serve the passengers. My partner came back on time luckily. Otherwise, I would have not known how to show his credit card to obtain our boarding passes.
A quick look at my partner’s credit card was enough for the agent to print our boarding passes.
While handing over the rest of our documents, I asked, “Is it possible for us to get an upgrade to First Class with Q miles?”
“No, I am sorry. We are fully booked in First and Business right now,” the agent replied.
‘Bummer! No F this time!’ There was nothing we could do than putting up with it. ‘All right then! Let’s try our luck on the way back from DOH,’
At one stage, I noticed that the agent was printing our boarding passes on Economy Class stubs. So I asked, “Are you running out Business Class boarding passes?”
“Oh, my mistake!”
The agent tore our misprinted boarding passes and proceeded to print out the new ones.
“Here are your boarding passes. The boarding will get started in about ten or fifteen minutes.” The agent said while returning our documents and boarding passes to DOH and onward to Kuala Lumpur. Due to the short waiting time, we did not bother to visit the lounge and decided to stay at the gate.

Boarding call was made after twenty minutes. Again despite the separate call for premium passengers, everyone just stood up.



A female agent tore off our boarding passes and returned the small stub. The LH male agent was standing further up to check the passport. Unlike to other passengers, he just waived me through when he saw me approaching.

It turned out to be a bus gate. Yay!

We were allowed to get off the bus. Thanks to the crowd before me, I got many opportunities to shoot some pictures.

Japanese flight attendant Junko greeted us at the door and directed to us to the left. I was pleasantly surprised to find a mini J cabin right behind the F cabin.

The daytime amenity kits had been placed on the armrests. Molton Brown is apparently appointed as her new supplier as substitute of Aigner. Instead of separate bags for ladies en gentlemen, there are universal kits which consisted of a pair of earplugs, a bottle of eau de toilette and body lotion, a tube of lip balm and moisturizer. Other amenities could be found in the lavatories.

Thai Purser Worapot who was in charge of F approached us, “Welcome onboard. May I offer you something to drink? Orange juice of our signature drink, lemon mint?”
“We will have the lemon mint, please,” we replied.
“Certainly,”
Worapot disappeared behind the curtain and returned soon with the lemon mints.

“Where are you going, Sir?” he asked while serving our glasses of lemon mint.
“Indonesia,” we replied.
“Wow, a long trip,”
“We know, but we are sure that we will be good taken care of with Qatar,”
“Thank you. Enjoy your flight,”

As Worapot disappeared, I grabbed my chance to capture the view of the still empty F cabin. The F seat rows on A7-ACA has apparently been reduced from three to two. While I was snapping photos, another female FA attendant appeared from the F galley. She only cracked a smile upon noticing my action.

When I returned to my seat, a comfort bag was already distributed. Inside there were an eyeshade and a pair of knitted anti-slip socks.

When I looked out the window, the ramp agent was still waiting under the staircase for the F passengers.



Towards the ETA, in all sudden six adults were passing by towards the F cabin followed by two children. Another two other children emerged in our cabin and taking the middle J seats. Then I realized why our upgrade request was not granted. A group of Middle Eastern travelers had booked up the F cabin, occupied several J seats. There was even a single Y seat for the nanny too.

Captain Murphy came to the intercom to welcome his passengers aboard. He mentioned our flight time of five hour and four minutes and furthermore that our routing would be MUC – Austria – Hungary – Romania – Bulgaria – Turkey – Iraq – Kuwait – Bahrain – DOH.

An elderly lady who I had never seen earlier, appeared and made her way to the F cabin. Purser Tahmineh rushed after her and escorted the lady backward again. Then, I overheard a discussion of Tahmineh and her colleagues which went like, “Make sure that no authorized people enter the First or Business Class cabin. I wish to keep our premium passengers separated from Economy Class,”

At 12.05, an announcement was made, “All our customers are onboard. Cabin crew, please prepare for take-off, “

Thai flight attendant Pariyanud appeared on our side. “Good afternoon, sir. Do you want a cold of hot towel?”
“Hot towel, please,” My partner and I replied.

The door closed at 12.10. About ten minutes later, Pariyanud returned to take our order. “Good afternoon, sir. Can we offer you anything to drink after take-off?”
“We would like to have champagne, please,”
“Are you joining us for the main meal?” Pariyanud proceeded.
“Certainly. I would like to have the classic Arabic mezze and the oven-roasted chicken supreme. Can I have the Shiraz to go with it, please,” I said.
“Certainly. And how about you, sir?” Pariyanud turned to my partner.
“I would like to have the seafood cocktail and pan-fried swordfish medallion. For me the chardonnay, please,”
“Thank you for your order, sir,” Pariyanud continued to other passengers.

After taking the meal order, Pariyanud recollected the towels and empty glasses.

At 12.30, the humming sound started to fill the cabin followed by the pushback. The safety instruction was broadcasted on the single main screen in front of the middle J seats.



About five minutes later, an announcement came that the in-flight entertainment had been switched on. Of course, we could not take advantage of it yet as our screens had to be stowed until after take-off.

A7-ACA made her way to 8R/26L. Now, let me take you along the take-off experience.

We accelerated, thundered down the runway and lifted off at 12.45.





We banked to the left and made an U-turn.

At 12.45, the fasten seatbelt signs were switched off. Time to explore the updated QR IFE in a more comfortable seating postion.

Fifteen minutes later, the plates were collected and Pariyanud returned to set our table.

Pariyanud set our tables one by one. I got attended first. Firstly, she covered my table with a linen. Secondly, she folded the napkin across and laid it on my lap. Finally, she set the bread plates, mini pepper and salt containers, butter dish and a water glass.



“Would you like still or sparkling water?” Pariyanud asked.
“Sparkling water, please,”
“Certainly,”

Pariyanud made my partner’s table set before pouring the water. Then, she returned with our starters.

Pariyanud proceeded to top up our glasses of champagne. Somehow when she was serving my partner, she miss poured the champagne.
“What is wrong? There is not even any turbulence,” my partner said jokingly.
“Still turbulence enough for me,” she blushed and quickly disappeared.
The starters were fabulous. The mezze tasted as good as I could remember two years ago. It was still one of my favorite starter on board of QR. The seafood cocktail was fresh and well flavoured.

Worapot appeared from the F cabin and cleared our plates on his way to the galley.

Nearly thirty minutes after the table setting, Pariyanud appeared with our main courses.

“Do you want anything else to go with your meal? Perhaps some ketchup, mustard or Tabasco?” Pariyanud asked.
“No, thank you,” Both my partner and I replied.
“Please enjoy your meal, “ Pariyanud returned to the galley.
“Thank you,” I started to savor my main course.
The potato soufflé was moist and creamy. The asparagus was well-cooked. The chicken was a bit dry on the outside, but the filling was just melting in your mouth and made a perfect combination with the spiced dark sauce.

Then, I noticed that my partner only ate half of his meal.
“What is wrong? Do you not like it?” I asked.
“Yes, but I think she has forgotten our wines,” my partner replied and hit the attendant call button. Tahmineh responded immediately.
“I think we still have to get our glass of Chardonnay and Shiraz,” my partner said.
“Oh, sure. I will get it for you,” Tahmineh quickly returned to the galley
“I find the swordfish rather dry, by the way.” My partner remarked, “Is it supposed to be like that?”
“I do not know. I have never had swordfish before,”
“Me neither. Well, since the whole First and Cabin was fully booked, it must be hard working for the cabin attendants. ”

Tahmineh appeared with the Shiraz, followed by Pariyanud who was very apologetic about the situation.
Both Tahmineh and Pariyanud exercised the QR’s wine serving procedure. Firstly, they poured couple drops into the glass and holding the bottle with the label facing us while we were having a taste. Then after our tasting and approval, they proceeded to top up the glass and left.

When we continued with our meal, Pariyanud suddenly emerged from the galley. “May I help you?”
Apparently, the attendant call button remained switched on to which Pariyanud responded in all rush. After noticing that we were fine, she switched off the button and returned to the galley.

After we finished our meal, Pariyanud came to collect our trays. It was 14.15.
“Would you care for dessert?” she asked.
“Yes, please. I would like to have the chocolate soufflé, “ I replied.
“I would like to have the forest berries,” my partner followed.
“Certainly,”

The soufflé was superb! My tongue got first heated up by the warm pear chocolate filling and eventually quenched by the cool clotted cream. Lovely combination of a sweet and buttery sensation.

We were flying above Varna when Pariyanud appeared again on our side.
“Do you want anything to drink? Tea or coffee?”
“We would like to have a cup of espresso with cognac please,”
“Do you want to have them mixed up or separated?”
“Separated, please,”
“Certainly,”

While waiting for the espresso, I took the chance to visit the lavatory. Perhaps at a wrong moment as the toilet was not really that clean…



Pariyanud served our espresso, not long after I returned to my seat.



Our coffee serving was followed with two bottles of water.



It was a bit hazy out of the window.

Not long after I took the photo, the cabin lights were dimmed. Pariyanud returned with hot towels, while Junko cleared up the coffee cups and dessert plates.

Now, it was about time to explore other parts of A7-ACA.

When I continued walking backwards, I got accosted by a German guy sitting on the left window bulkhead seat.
“Hi, Holland! Nice to meet you! I am from Bayern München!“
I was perplex and did really know how to reply more than, “Hi, there. Nice to meet you too!”
“You guys did make it to the final. Too bad you had to give up to Spain,”
Actually, I did not care that much about the whole football game. But I did not want to spoil the encounter with this cheerful chap. “Yes, it was a pity, indeed.”
“Where are you going anyway?”
“Indonesia,”
“That is a long journey! I hope you enjoy the flight,”
“Thank you. I wish you the very same!”

When I moved on, I met Tahmineh who just finished helping a passenger with his IFE. “You again! Do you have friends here?”
“Well, I just have made one,”
Tahmineh just smiled and let me through backwards.

After exploring the Y cabin, I was curious about the condition of the lavatory I visited earlier by then.

I returned to my seat to get some sleep. Unfortunately, I could not keep my hands off the IFE control unit. Neither did my partner. He was watching the first Superman film with Christopher Reeves.

Cuisine


About one hour and twenty minutes before landing, the indulgence service was about to start.
Tahmineh took away my empty bottle just after I finished it off, and quickly replaced it with two new ones.
Pariyanud emerged from the galley to our side. “Are you joining us for the afternoon tea?”
“Certainly,” both my partner and I replied.
“What do you want to drink? Coffee or tea?”
I ordered a cup of green tea and my partner coffee with milk.

Pariyanud returned shortly to set our table and serving our drink one by one. Junko followed her with our indulgence trays.



I could barely finish them all, even though every single of it was a delicious treat. When I was about to skip the forest berries, my partner insisted me to finish it. Well, I did not regret it! I never had such fresh and tasty forest berries before.

My partner wished another glass of Chardonnay which was quickly met by Tahmineh. By the way, do you remember the Middle Eastern group I mentioned earlier in this report? The four children of the group were together and being supervised by the nanny, making the mini forward J cabin like a nursery.

It was about thirty five minutes before landing when Captain Murphy came to the intercom and announced that we were leaving our cruising altitude to 6,000 feet. He mentioned further that it was hazy in DOH and the temperature would be 36 centigrade’s.

The fasten seat belt signs were turned on thirty minutes before landing. Unfortunately, I did not manage to make proper pictures out of the window until we disembarked. I hope you do not mind.

About twenty five minutes before landing, another hot towel runs were conducted and followed by the recollection of the menu’s. Ten minutes before landing, the cabin lights were dimmed.

We touched down at 18.45 and docked within less than five minutes.




Disembarking


Departures and arrivals in DOH always meant bus gates. After saying goodbye to Tahmineh, Pariyanud and Junko, we were ushered to the dedicated bus down the stairs. I got tipped over my shoulder two years ago for taking pictures, so I tried to be discrete that time.

The Middle Eastern group got apparently dedicated limousine service. I counted at least five limousines involved.

Our bus could not drive away as the limousines blocked our route. It took a while before the whole group members got on. Finally, we were cleared to go to our next stop, the DOH Premium Terminal.

I do not wish to judge my experience on this single flight, but I can say that my high expectation of QR was met accordingly. I was glad to see that their in-flight service was as consistent as two years ago. QR even offers better IFE’s nowadays which I really appreciated. Her five stars were definitely not fading away.

This part of my series came to an end here. Coming up next will be our short visit to the Premium Terminal and our onward journey to Kuala Lumpur.

First of all, Amazing TR! Not just cause I am a fan of QR, but really well-made! It is always a pleasure to read your TR's and glad you enjoyed the experience.

The aircraft you flew was the first one that was delievered to QR 8 years ago. The J seats I noticed are exactly the same as the other newer A330's and A340's.

I cant wait for your trip to Bali!

PS. Did you eat the orange tomato bread? It is simply amazing!

Great continuation to your earlier report! Looks like you had a really nice flight with QR down to DOH. The food looks really nice, and your photos really document every aspect of your trip.

The view of the mini cabin behind F reminds me of when I flew Lufthansa back in 2002 on a A340 .. We were seated in 4A and 4B which was located right behind F .. definitely a nice area of the aircraft right in front of door 2L.

All I can say is "Wow."

For 1 year QR flew Geneva to Newark. Unfortunately they now fly Doha to New York non stop.
They look pretty miserable in Y.

A good spot otherwise I'm sure you wouldn't want it tainted with an Economy Class boarding pass.

Food presentation looks awesome, I bet it tasted wonderful as well.

Seats do not seem to be at the same level though, I was expecting something better, although the lowest mark goes to the filthy bathroom.

Excellent report Suryo, it was a nice read, QR seems to be a really good airline, they have started flights to BCN recently (on A319s) and they have some tasty fares to ME and Asia, hopefully I will get to sample their service soon

It seems like you and your partner had a great time in QR J class.

To me QR's J product look very similar to what many other airlines offer in F class. The food looked faboulus, the presentation looked superb. I like the way they bring in the dishes individually, and that they don't use a tray. The food itself is very well presented, and to me it seems like they put the food on the plate onboard the A/C, unlike some airlines that heat the plate right away. The Indulgence platter looked delicious as well, very generous as a "snack" for a flight of that duration  
Pity that you weren't able to upgrade to F class, on the other hand what's the point when the J product is so good. However it seems that the flight was a moneymaker for QR with F sold out. How about those children in J, did they disturb you and the other pax? A bit mean to the nanny imho to seat her in Y, was she allowed to enter J?

The headphones looked pretty nice, though very similar to Bose's QC2 or 15 models. Were those Bose headphones?

As PH mentions, I think QR offers a competitive product ... but sad to notice service delivery issues (such as the wine). Also, regular QR travelers will notice this ... but the bread basket has definitely SHRUNK in size!

Indeed, it can't. I also tend to check the fares of my flights after booking - you can get all kinds of positive and negative surprises. But in the end I try to look forward to the flight, even if there would have been a cheaper option to get it.

You are right. There are only few airlines where the attendants serve trays individually during the meal service while flying J. I think most of them are from Middle East like QR, EK, EY AND WY.
