UA's Domestic B747: SFO-ORD Upper Deck Business

I learned of the last unconverted B747 of UA. All of UA's B747's are converted to new lie-flat business class. However, there is only one that still has old-style seats. I heard that they had pulled it out of the desert airplane graveyard and brought it back to service for domestic routes. I wanted to try it. 15A was the "prime" seat, as I remember, in the upper deck. We gave it a go, and it was very nice. The plane did not seem old at all, other than the bad paint.

We flew the B767 lie flats to, and the B747 old configuration fro. The food, surprisingly, was quite good. I think UA took a page from CO's playbook with the soup. The soup adds a lot to the meal, no question.

We also took advantage of some fine dining in Chicago, so we've included some shots of the food there. Molecular gastronomy, as they call it, seems to be much bigger in Chicago than it does in San Francisco. They have some incredible cuisine, and I've included some shots of the very inventive food that they have there. Chicago definitely has some great food. It is a wonderful city.

Hope you enjoy it my video trip report!

It is unfortunate that your video stops at 3.23. The meal looks ok although the chocolate cookie looks like a"cheap"treat , The amnities in white color were more looking like like hospital gowns.
Love your take off and landing shoots, quite remarkable.
Thank you for sharing

Thank you for the comment. The video works past 3:23. I just checked, and it runs all the way to the end.

Also, keep in mind that this is a 3-hour domestic flight, not an international business class flight. One really should compare this product to other 3-hour domestic business class products, not internatinal business class long-haul products. Thanks!

Wow, what incredible leg room indeed! The food looks good too. Looks like a great domestic J product.

Thanks for the vid.

How is the Red Carpet lounge in SFO in terms of the selection of food and leisure amenities?

Nice video! So is this 747 primarily used for SFO-ORD since it doesn't have lie-flat seats? What was the load like?

Another great video, sfflyer123!

Great views from your 2 flights with United. I love the shot of the 767 engine at takeoff and landing, and the views of the upper deck on the 747 was great as well! Not a bad way to travel at all! I actually think the older style Business seats look to be more comfy, than the lie flat! It just looks so much more roomy, and that there is more space!

Looking forward to your next trip!

I recently flew with UAL from IAD to LAX First Class on a three cabin 777. I was extremely disappointed with their inflight meal offering. My flight departed IAD at 5:25pm and for dinner I received a small oval-shaped bowl of what tasted like canned ravioli with cheese sprinkled on top, a small albeit fresh-tasting side salad, and a roll. That was it, with the exception of a warm cookie for dessert! I was stunned at the lack of food served on a transcon flight! While the flight attendants worked hard and were very gracious, the onboard meal service sucked! This past December, I received substantially better meals on Emirates in economy class LHR-DXB return.

It's no comparison to any international lounge. Crackers, cheese, potato chips, soft drinks, and alcohol (which is not free). It's fine for me, but if you were to compare it to an LH senator lounge or a SQ Krisflyer lounge, there is no comparison.

Yes, I believe they pulled it out of the desert storage because they realized the SFO-ORD loads were huge. The entire plane was packed full 100%. Completely full. It's amazing the loads they have.

I am sorry to hear this. I agree with you that UA food is hit or miss. I once had a meal on UA P.S. business that was delicious, just restaurant quality. I also had a meal on UA PVG-SFO in business that was completely inedible. It was over-salted and just completely inedible. That being said, I think overall, it is getting better, slowly but surely. I think once the merger occurs, it will rise to the level of CO's food (I hope!).

Well, I'm quite a sucker for decor and ambience. The UA lounges I've seen so far were rather limited for food but featured great decor. They've got a classy, old school feel to them which I like. Food selection is a plus but I eat like a bird so it doesn't make that much of a difference for me lol

Nice video, not sure I'd call it a trip report, but, hey, the moderators have not locked or deleted it.

The new J seats on the 767 looked good as did the food, though I'm not sold on the cookie for desert, that's cheap!

Looking at the old J seats on the 747 reminds me of how poor the UA J product was, thank goodness they got a new product to replace this, no way they could compete unless on price with this old product.

Not sure I was so keen on the chicken dish on the 744 flight, looked pretty cheap and lacked ant presentation.

Rgds

Nice TR, saw it on FT. I flew that old config 747 on the upper deck yesterday, and it was disappointing to end up in regular domestic F seats for my connection in ORD. The blankets are also pretty nice (they helped me sleep the whole way to ORD). You've got a creative way of "writing" TRs - keep it up!

Yes, definitely food is snack at the most.
