Tallinn to London, with Estonian Air and BA, via ARN
Hello everyone!
This trip covers my trip back from Tallinn in Estonia, back to London via Stockholm. I had already booked my flight from Stockholm back to London on BA using BA miles, so booked a connecting flight from Tallinn with Estonian Air (OV). Luckily they had a cheap one way flight available, that had a reasonable connecting time before the London flight. Strangely, OV have 4 TLL-ARN flights a day, one early, one late (both B737s), then one at 1020, and another at 1050 (both Saab 340s). Rather strange timetabling.
Tallinn was a very pleasant city – I was only there for 2 nights, but I think another night or two could be well used – you just have to hope for nice weather!
The Estonian Air office in town
Tallinn’s small, but very efficient airport, is located just outside the city centre - a taxi from my hotel took les than 10 minutes. I had checked in online, so just needed to drop my bag. There were only 2 desks open, one business, and one economy. I was called over to the business desk, where the very friendly lady checked me in. She also filled out a ‘delivery at aircraft’ tag for my normal sized backpack hang luggage.
Once checked in, I went to check the screens, and noticed a one hour delay. I went back to the desk, and the woman there called up/spoke to at least five different people, before coning back, saying that there was indeed a delay. No problem for me as I have four and a half hours between flights in Stockholm with nothing to do.
I took a short walk around the terminal – new, efficient, and pleasantly empty, which was understandable given that other than the two Stockholm Saabs, there was just an Air Baltic Fokker 50 to Riga, and a delayed B737 for Paris worth of passengers around.
Security was very fast, with just one person in the queue ahead of me. The airside area didn’t have a lot of shops, but there was a Cuban cigar shop.
One of the gates has been ‘dedicated’ to Estonian Air, complete with vintage uniforms and aircraft models. Check out the cool gate background.

I took the time waiting for my delayed flight by using the free wifi. There were also free computers to use around the airport. did you know the Skype was made in Estonia?

I had just over an hour to wait before I could check in for my flight to London, so I went and had some food in ‘Skycity’ a sort of restaurant area, with some good views.

After dropping my bag at the bag drop, I headed though security, which was quite quick, and went to find the Menzies operated lounge. This would be my first flight since reaching BA Silver (One World Sapphire), so I was keen to make the most of my benefits. The lounge itself was nothing special, but the G&Ts were good. The flight was listed as being half an hour late, so the lounge was a good place to hang out.

The flight was completely full. One of the benefits of Silver is being able to choose your seat in advance, so I got a window seat in the exit row. Unfortunately, there was a rather wide guy in the middle seat, which encroached into my space a bit – we spent the flight fighting for space. Can’t have been comfortable for him either, but it was his fault.
Following the poor snack BA (courtesy of Air Finland) served on my May flight to Helsinki, I was expecting a biscuit, but thankfully, we were given a very reasonable chicken salad sub for our meal.
And drinks – two double G&Ts in total from the friendly crew
We didn’t make up much of our delay, and soon landed into a monsoonesque London. My priototy tagged bags came out about 30th, but given the number of bags overall, this wasn’t too bad.
Well, Estonian Air was a very pleasant experience. Had I not had such a long connection, I might have been annoyed with the delay, but in fact, I’d have rather spent the time on the free TLL wifi, than waiting to check in in ARN. The Saab 340 was a great plane to fly in, helped, no doubt, by the beer I smuggled on board.
BA offered a good product, as always. The perks of being Silver are very nice. I can now see why it is harder to get BA Silver over LH Silver. The BA lounges are better, and are much more plentiful (nearly every airport served has a lunge for BA, whereas LH has very few outside Germany).

Thanks for the TR, interesting reading, especially the Estonian Air part. Their Saab looks so good, haven't been on that yet, unfortunately Estonian doesn't fly to Finland at the moment. The last time I visited Tallinn from Helsinki I was lucky to get a helicopter ride but sadly that service isn't available any more.

I assume you got your BA sandwich because the flight is over 2 1/2 hours. To GVA they eliminated the sandwich and the nice chocolate biscuit. I used to really enjoy the BA snacks.
I notice that you did not get the chocolate biscuit.

Vey nice report with very pictures! Tallinn looks great and Estonian seems pretty good too.
Quoting Andaman (Reply 1): Thai flies their old B747-300 to ARN.
TG doesn't fly their 747-300s anywhere at this time; they are parked. TG flies the 744 to ARN.

Hi Gab,
Nice to see another report from you, about some familiar places and planes!
Have logged quite a few flights on these Estonian Regional Saabs, with another one on that very same route to come in November. It's been a few years since my last time on OV.
Did they still announce the flight to be operated by Golden Air or not? This was the case when the two Saabs were still in SE- registration, but I think once they transferred them over to ES- the AOC was also transferred to OV (or Regional).

It is done this way because the Regional Saabs do W patterns during the weekdays, flying ARN-URE and ARN-TAY and back (and seasonally ARN-EPU as well) before flying back to base at TLL in the afternoon. The 737s are the main feeder flights to/from the SK network at ARN.

Yep, for some reason Tallinn and Estonia in general is rather rarely seen in reports on this forum - I've posted a few and there have been a few others but that's about it. Seriously speaking 3-4 nights is pushing it a little, but you could always venture further out, the countryside and the smaller cities have a lot to offer as well!
Had it been a summer weekend all those terraces and restaurants in the old town would've been packed with boatloads of Finns and (to a lesser extent) Swedes as well.
Quoting gabrielchew (Thread starter): I took a short walk around the terminal – new, efficient, and pleasantly empty, which was
You should've been there when the old terminal was all they had - small, old-fashioned (built for the 1980 Moscow Olympics, part of which took place in Tallinn) and very cramped. The area right after security with the main duty free store in the current airport is all that remains of it nowadays.
Of course there's also the original, 1930's terminal across the apron if you want to get really nostalgic .
Yes - a fact which most of them are very proud of!
Quoting gabrielchew (Thread starter): With the last of my Estonian currency, I bought a can of beer (cheeky I know, but tasted good)
Whoa, this got me scared that even OV Regional had introduced BOB...

This is the new Oneworld lounge at the F-pier, right? I agree it is quite a decent lounge, an improvement over the old T2 lounge (but NOT over the Platinum section of that lounge, nowadays there's just one-size-fits-for-all which is a bummer).

I was hoping the try the helicopter, but of course it doesn't run anymore - not too many international helicopter services left. HK-Macau is the only one I can think of.

No biscuit, and no choice of "sweet or savoury". Still confused as to why on the LHR-HEL there was only a biscuit, even though it is a longer flight.
Quoting The777Man (Reply 3): Vey nice report with very pictures!
Thanks!

I don't think so.

I had no idea!

No BOB, I bought the beer in the terminal. I did ask if they had any beer, but the FA said they didn't.
Quoting FlyingFinn76 (Reply 4): This is the new Oneworld lounge at the F-pier, right?
Yes, although it is before passport control (I suppose to cater to the AY crowd).
Oh definitely, I've been there myself a few times, usually with the boat from HEL. In the summer the place is really cozy and even in the winter the old city is rather enjoyable.

Note that almost everywhere in Tallinn there's free wifi available. Estonia seems to be one of the front-runner countries in Europe with free wifi, very nice!

Hi Gabriel another top notch TR. Would you recommend Estonia as somewhere to visit?

That's one of the worst things that can happen. Just be glad that it wasn't a long haul flight!
Quoting gabrielchew (Thread starter): I can now see why it is harder to get BA Silver over LH Silver.
I was with BA Silver as well however to keep that status for me was too much as they don't seem to like people that travel in Economy. So now I'm with QF and their FF programme is much better as its easier to attain miles and status credits!

Quoting Severnaya (Reply 6): Do you perhaps know, or someone else, why the front rows on the Saab have less seat pitch than the back rows? Really odd, usually it's the opposite.
I noticed that as well, very strange, especially as they had "business class" or something to that effect, written on the seat covers for the first few rows.
Was, it's some label from the local Saku Beer Company.
Quoting AI151 (Reply 8): Would you recommend Estonia as somewhere to visit?
Yes! Well, I only saw Tallinn very briefly, but I'm sure the rest of the country is very nice.

Yes, lucky the flight was quite short, and I had the exit row legroom.

Yeah, BA hates economy passengers! Reaching Silver is a one time thing for me I think. I've been LH Silver for 7 years or so, never even came close to BA Silver until this year when I flew IB Business longhual. On cheap economy tickets, though, not a chance.

Nice report and pictures as uaual, good to see you off the beaten path so to speak!
Tallinn does look a lovely city, really must get round to visiting there one day.

Oh, I love going off the beaten path, although Tallinn was pretty busy from all the cruise ships (vomiting out thousands of vintage cruisers every week).

Oh, I will! I've got 2 BA trips this month (MRS and AMS), and have the lounges sussed already.

Very cool trip report. I really enjoyed it. Tallinn is a lovely city. I've had the pleasure to visit it in December 2007, but I didn't fly there. I took a boat from Helsinki. Twelve months later, I was on a flight from Stockholm to London with British Airways. Your report brought back a lot of memories.
