SA 313 JNB-CPT ZS-SJE 738 C Class
SA 606 CPT-DUR ZS-SIO 732 C Class
SA 558 DUR-JNB ZS-SIT 732 C Class

A recent business trip involved the following flights on the South African 'golden triangle' routes.

Service on board was excellent, with good hot food on all flights (including the 50 minute DUR-JNB sector). Table cloths and plenty of metal cutlery set the right tone.

Only JNB has air bridge boarding for domestic services. The rest were airstair boardings, which I prefer (in the right weather).

The 738 was without the winglets, and I would say that the flights were about 60 % full, but loads in C class were weak. The low cost airlines are hitting SAA. However, most flights are really cheap for hard curency visitors. For the really cost-conscious, Kalula.com provides $20 air fares in a former Comair B727-200, which would be fun.

The CPT-DUR sector gives you really good views of the landscape - quite spectaculr scenery over the hills and the sea.

I was pleased to get rides on both the 738 and the 732s (which had been refurbished inside to appear as new as the 738). I enjoy the clunky 732 and as it is becoming rarer in Europe, this is becoming a good home for them (I took a Nationwide example in January on the same route).

JNB is always interesting as there is always a bunch of aircraft parked up. CPT and DUR (even less) had very little of interest - the usual long haul aircraft spending the day at CPT.

It is worth taking South African domestic flights (of whichever airline) becasue of the variety of aircraft types airlines and the value for money.

Billy, who did you like the seats on the B738?
I never flew on a B732 with SA. Do they have the same seats?

Same seats on 738 and 732, ie 3x3 in Y and 2x3 (seats A,C,D,E,F) in C. All C seats have the dinky little drinks tray in fixed to the armrests (like BA seats). Dark blue fabric (no leather) and no foot rests, but plenty legroom.
