In early Spring, I did a short trip to Vienna and flew Austrian Airlines. It would be 7 years since I last flew with OS, and that was from London to Beijing via Vienna. Both flights were excellent, and I rated OS very highly. I was interested to see how OS had changed in the intervening 7 years, at least on the LHR - VIE flight.

This trip report is only the return VIE - LHR flight.

30 May 2010
OS455
VIE - LHR
B737-800(w)
OE-LNR “Piz Buin”
Seat 22A

After a lovely few days in Vienna, it was time to return home to London. Vienna is a lovely city, full of interesting places to visit and great food. A few snaps taken in Vienna -

Part of the Hofburg Palace complex in central Vienna

Schonbrunn Palace, in the suburbs of Vienna

Neptune Fountain, Schonbrunn Palace

State Opera House

A significant weather system moved across VIE just before we arrived , with dark clouds, lots of thunder and lightning and plenty of rain. Thankfully, it did not seem to disrupt the proceedings and our flight was not subsequently delayed.

After a quick check in (I had completed OLCI the night before at the hotel), we headed through to the departure gates. It took no time at all, even though the terminal was crowded. I found VIE to be quite pokey and cramped however - moreso with the volume of people who were passing through.

It was also difficult to get any decent pictures in the non Schengen part of the terminal and a lack of seating for waiting passengers seemed evident.

I did manage a few snaps though options were limited. Most of the Austrian long haul fleet were not on the ground - being the wrong time of the day to see most of the 767s or 777s.

OE-LVK at the gate

OE -LDB arriving

UR-GAK arriving from Kiev

OE-LNM heading out for departure

The best I could do with another arriving 737-800 (not our aircraft)

I found the waiting area at VIE to be pretty boring actually. There were only a handful of shops and places to buy anything to eat or drink.

We moved to our gate where we were processed by security. It took next to no time because people were gradually turning up to the gate, so there was never a long queue. The holding pen however, was quite small, and our 737 looked fully laden for this afternoon’s flight to London.

Our aircraft at the gate getting ready to operate OS455 to LHR

Sadly when our aircraft arrived, I groaned in dismay as it turned out to be the exact same B737 that brought us to London 3 days previously. Arrghh!

It was nice to see the B737 in Austrian colours, but the interior was still very much revealed its past with Lauda Air, with the seats being grey coloured.

Boarding was called on time. This is the view from 22A. It was still raining when we boarded. Goodbye Flughafen Wien!

Once all were aboard, and the flight was full, there were no delays and we pushed back for our short taxi to the runway. I can’t recall which runway we used, but perhaps VIE spotters will be able to tell from the location of the pics.

We had a flight time of just over 2 hours to London this afternoon, climbing out and getting a great view of the Austrian Alps on the left hand side, passing over Salzburg before heading in a more north-westerly direction.

Climbing out of VIE

Nice views of the Alps

Service on Austrian in 2010?

Service was very basic - just one drinks run and a rather stale sandwich. Not very impressive, and it was markedly different to the service I experience on OS 7 years ago flying between VIE and LHR. OS really seemed to have gone downhill in the catering stakes in that time. Cost cutting was certainly evident.

OS cabin crew also weren’t as friendly as I remember them in 2003. They did their jobs politely but I never saw any evidence of genuine warmth or friendliness by the crew. I guess you get that with any flight these days.

Seat pitch was pretty good actually (I am 6ft 1” tall)

Reading material. A nice article on Armenia was the main feature

Over central Austria

The weather in London was nice for our early evening arrival and during descent, we had some nice views of the City of London, Canary Wharf, and the rapidly developing Olympic site for the 2012 Olympic Games.

Entering UK airspace

Circling to the north east of London

Over north East London, looking south toward Canary Wharf and the Olympic site

The Olympic site closer up - still circling !

Getting closer - over Canary Wharf with LCY in the background. We’re almost directly overhead of my apartment in London at this point

Flaps down for landing

Passing Myrtle Avenue with the spotters down below before making a smooth landing on RW27L. Was anyone from A.net down there on Sun 30 May this year??

Welcome home to London - KQ 772 at the gate at T4 awaiting its evening departure to NBO.

Taxi to our parking stand with Tunisair A320 departing off 27R

We did not have an assigned gate, so were bussed to the terminal. This meant I was able to get a couple of shots of the aircraft from the bus. Thankfully nobody told me to put my camera away although I was discreet. You never know these days whether you’re going to get told off for taking pics of planes at airports.

Another view of OE-LNR after the 2 hour flight from Vienna, basking in the late spring sunshine

Overall, I wasn’t disappointed with OS but I wasn‘t overly impressed either. They performed an on time flight, and the aircraft was well maintained inside and out. Seat pitch was acceptable, even though the aircraft had been previously in service with Lauda, and I imagine it was primarily used to operate charter services. However, the standard of catering was average, and the crew were lacking in any real enthusiasm. I would still fly with OS again, but I would not be expecting anything like the stellar flights I had with them in 2003.

Thanks for sharing your experience.

I've never flown OS, always wanted to find an excuse as I figured they were a high quality airline, which they once were though now pretty much the same as the others?

My sister in-law flew theim to PEK a month or so back, she said the food was good, better than the stuff she normally gets in BA WTP, she travels almost monthly, lucky girl!!

Cheers

Mark

Hi Palmjet,

another enjoyable report with high-quality pictures, well done! Vienna is nice indeed, I have always enjoyed my visits. And I agree about the airport, it can be very cramped.

That's bad luck!

Yes, the glory days of big trays on OS' European flights are gone. However, I'm a bit surprised that you only got a sandwich. I recently flew VIE-MUC on Tyrolean (Austrian Arrows) and got a tasty mixed salad in a box plus bread.

Hi Mark - thanks for your post. Yes, I remember how nice the service and food was on my flight (OS63) to PEK was back in September 2003. It was also on an A332 which was very nice!

I found the flights on OS this time round very Lufthansa-esque, which is not surprising.

PH - nice of you to post a comment on my latest trip report. Thanks. Yes, the glory days seem gone for OS intra Europe, but I still would fly OS again. I always wondered whether the onboard service on Tyrolean was better than on mainline OS -your experience between VIE - MUC seems to confirm this. I've heard other say the same thing. Cheers P/j

Palmjet,

Thanks for sharing a good report on OS! I flew them back about 10 years ago, from JFK to VIE on their A340-300 .. It was one of the best flights I've ever taken! The service was amazing; sorry to hear that they've scaled back from what they used to be ..

Beautiful views outside of the window on your flight .. looks like a nice day to be flying!

767747 - thanks for your comments. Yes, I can well imagine your flight with OS on the 343 - My 9 hour flight to PEK with them on the A332 was also amazing. I know OS were in financial trouble which pretty much led to the LH buyout, so at least they are still around - however, definitely felt like they were a shadow of their former selves. I would like to fly with them again longhaul and see if the same applies.

It was indeed a great day for flying - quite rare to have such clear views coming into London. It was lovely.

Hi Palmjet, a great read from this short flight of yours. I'm slowly in the process of reading the others and hope to get through all of them before I fly off. I was in Vienna back in 2003 and even then it was very dull and boring. The seating at the gate was rather abysmal for our full A320 with BA.

Very unfortunate for that to happen.

Good to see the sun was out when landing in LHR as its normally dull and overcast! I wonder if the 2012 stadium will ever get finished!

Great picture when disembarking although how you were discreet and got that picture I have no clue! LOL! Loving the b/w pics as well.

AI151 - thanks v much! As Planehunter says, there is nothing worse than getting the same registration twice!

Apparently the Olympic works are ahead of schedule and are well timed to be ready for 2012. You would never think it looking at the procedings down below! Since May, they've made quite a bit of progress actually.

I've become much more strategic with taking pics on flights these days, and tend to use a very small point and shoot compact camera so as not to arouse suspicion - sometimes it works and sometimes not. Thanks again. P/jet

OMG! I am so sorry! What happend to my "Austrian/Lauda" crossover.

Last time I flew on Austrian, I was onboard of one of the ex B737-600 of Lauda Air.

This a/c was equipped with "sleeper-seats", staffed with an outstanding Lauda-Crew, equipped with fantastic IFE and decorated like a private-jet (wooden bulkheads). Have a look on this pic:

It seems the a/c are now re-configured and even operated by original OS-Crew! Very sad to see!

hi debonair - wow indeed. what a contrast to the cabin on my 737-800. looks amazing in comparison. Our aircraft had high density seating and certainly no premium class sectioned cabin at the front of the aircraft. I would fly OS again, but they were definitely not how I remembered them from 2003. Thanks for your post.

I enjoyed reading your report. Very detailed photos.

I flew with Austrian on LHR-VIE on the star alliance 738 and then onto Belgrade on a 736.

I found my first flight to VIE on the 738 similar to yours, none of my mates liked the sandwich and the interior was not that comfortable with the leather seats.

The flight down to Belgrade on the 736 was fabric green seats which were very comfortable.

Got to say the chocolate snack they serve on their flights is very very tasty.

Make sure they know we're playing the game, but we don't need to play the game because we've already won the game.

Nice trip report. I have been in Vienna and have flown OS. I did like those buses that you board from the rear if the plane is at a mobile stand.

Very nice trip report. Austrian was my favourite airline in Europe for the quality of its service especially with the Do&CO meals not long time ago. I guess LH has something to with the downgrading if the on-board product.

Great report. Looks like the catering of OS 455 has become a bit poorer since Easter when I took it on the way back from Ukraine .

In the 1990s OS was also very average with the crews cold as ice. It seems that a few years ago they became a great airline. But with the losses they had no choice but to cut. BA also cut the catering. BA only serve a sandwich and biscuit / snack for flights of 2 1/2 hours or more. I think the flight LHR to VNA is a bit shorter.

I agree to this, at least on OS yo get a half-deceont sandwich, while on BA you get a biscuit (I dont think there is any sandwich?)

Actually, Schloss Schönbrunn is very close to the centre (6-7km from the first district) and is in fact well within the city; not in the suburbs.

it seems like your departure gate was at the east pier, if the taxi was short, you most probably departed from rwy 29.

Glad you enjoyed this now (old) report. Thanks for your comments. I had a really nice time in Vienna. It's one of my favourite cities in Europe.

Thanks very much for that - it was only a very short taxi.

Cheers! Palmjet
