Delta Subfleet Trip Report ATL-LAX-KOA/OGG-LAX-ATL

Very brief, albeit a report nonetheless.

Had the opportunity to fly ATL-LAX-KOA-OGG-LAX-ATL, and managed to fly 4 of what I would call subfleets within the Delta fleet.

1 - 767-332 GE N127DL ATL-LAX. Okay, maybe this isnt a subfleet member, but nonetheless 1 of 10 a/c in service kind of counts. PTV's and good service, your typical DL transcon flight. On time departure and arrival, so no complaints. I was glad to see tail 127 waiting for me at gate T2...one of the few GE 763A's I haven't flown...2 more to log! I ended up #2 on the UG list after all had cleared(I'm a GM) - much better than #83/135 on my last ATL-SFO leg! In fact, I am nearing 75% on UG's this year, so no complaints from me...transcons seem impossible in LUT fare buckets.

2 - 757-212 N752AT LAX-KOA. Woo Hoo - I've wanted to catch a -212 for the longest time, which seemed basically impossible. As far as I can tell, they are only found on the following routes: LAX-KOA/LIH/SLC, and 1/day SLC-ATL. Seems 2 of the 4 aircraft have been repainted, so I was glad to get one of the "Deltaflots." There are very few left in the fleet overall outside of M88's. This aircraft(6904) was originally delivered to Singapore, and served with ATA before moving to Delta. As LN 48, the oldest 757 I've flown on by far...26 years young!

3 - 757-251W N548US OGG-LAX. Wasn't perfectly sure which aircraft would operate this flight, since the seat map didn't line up to seatguru. Turns out it was an ex-NWA "Pacific" version, or 75J. Unusual configuration, and an intereting comparison. While 752AT was the 48th 757 built, this was 700+ and there were quite a few differences to say the least. Easy to tell they were built roughly two decades apart! Seats on this aircraft were the recovered Delta blue leather, and built in headrests. Much more comfortable that the standard DL seats IMHO. Also, armrests were movable in the exit row. A nice touch. As most photos of this aircraft show it operating out of NRT, it must recently have been rotated back to the US. While no photos in the new colors are available, the a/c is repainted in DL's latest.

4 - 767-332 PW N143DA LAX-ATL. Ahh...another subfleet. One of the 4 non-ER P&W powered 763's. You can't tell the slightest bit of difference save for the engine cowlings, but another one for the log book! These a/c are flying LAX-ATL-LAX 2x/Day, ATL-SLC-HNL, and LAX-HNL 1x. I've flown 1404(N144DA)before so was glad to snag another reg.

inter-island:

I chose to fly Hawaiian KOA-OGG. Other options were Go/Mokulele or Island Air. I would have liked to try Island Air but the single daily flight didn't meet my schedule. Despite being cheaper, I avoided Go! purpousfully based on a lot of the feelings of Mesa on this board. Standard inter-island flight - about 20 minutes, beautiful view. Interestingly, the a/c #83 had left the fleet, gone to AirTran, then returned!

Interesting! These 757-212 used to be deployed - a few years ago - on some LatAm routes from ATL such as BOG, LIM and CCS. LIM was quickly upgraded to 767 (300 first and now 400). I believe both BOG and CCS are still operated with 757s, but from your post it seems it would not be the 212 subfleet any longer?

The 757-212s are a interesting sub specie for DL. I flew on one from BOS-ATL last year in F. The footrests were awesome. When we arrived, the a/c was going to LAX (I was on an earlier flight connecting to LAX on a 763.)

Yup, I believe they are totally out of LATAM. I got that routing information by checking all 4 reg's (N750/1/2/7AT) on acars and flightaware.

There is still an occasional ATL-BOS-ATL turn after mx in ATL.

There are several different versions...biggest difference is seating configuration:

757-232 "757" - No PTV's
757-232 "75X" - PTV's
some of each have winglets

757-231/2Q8 "757 ETOPS"
757-212 - "75V" - No PTV's, smaller F class, no air vents
757-251(former NW) 4 different configurations, 2 different exit configurations
757-351
