British Airways, London to Amsterdam for the weekend

Last weekend I went to Amsterdam with a friend. The flights from London are amongst the British Airways’ shortest, with both flights taking well under an hour. As such, the report isn’t terribly long, but I hopefully may be of interest to some of you. We flew out of Gatwick, and into Heathrow as the flight times and prices made it more convenient this way. The previous week I had flown BA to Marseille from Gatwick, so would have preferred to avoid Gatwick again, but there we go. The flights were booked as a flight and hotel package on ba.com, with a promise of a bonus 1000 airlines. Unfortunately these have still not posted, despite the flights having done so. It took a while to find a decent, yet cheap, hotel in Amsterdam. After a lot of searching, and comparing hotels, we went with the Arco Hotel, just next to the Van Gogh Museum – not the best hotel in Amsterdam, but far from the worse either.

We took the train from London Bridge down to Gatwick, then the shuttle train over to the North Terminal, which BA has all their Gatwick operations. After picking up our boarding cards, we went through security (which took a while, so many newbie flyers), and then made a beeline for the lounge. At the end of August I qualified for BA Executive Club Silver, and so have been making the most of my lounge access perks, which are a lot more generous than Lufthansa Silver perks. Having said that, I prefer the bmi Lounge in Heathrow Terminal 1 over the BA lounge in Gatwick, and about on par with the Heathrow Galleries.

Champagne is available on request in the lounges, so once we’d found a quiet corner, we ordered a couple of glasses with breakfast. The food selection was reasonable, with fruit, cereal, yoghurts and bread. The normal bar selection was also available although it didn’t look like many people were partaking.

Due to the early start, I’d missed taking a shower at home, so leaving my friend to print off our hotel voucher, I went to the shower area. The lady as the desk quickly allocated me a cabin, which was nicely laid out. Water pressure was good, and nice and hot. Perfect.

We left the lounge a little late, and when we arrived at the gate, there were only a few people left to board. This was my first trip with my new carry-on (25-40-57, so 2 cm too long), and I was a bit paranoid at not being able to fit it into the lockers. Thankfully, with a bit a pushing, the damn thing went in. Luckily, we were in the first row of economy, and Club Europe was quite empty, so there was still am empty locker. I’m already in the process of looking for a replacement bag – the max dimensions are just too big for comfort! Whilst boarding my friend (who is very intelligent, and knows barely anything about planes, but has flown a fair bit) asked where first class was, and if there was an upstairs (we were on a B737) – it was a fascinating insight into how most normal people think!

Loads today were pretty good, with economy just about full as far as I could see, and Club with around 6 people (2 of whom were known to the crew).


There were at least 4 BA 777s at the terminal this morning, all heading off to various Caribbean destinations (or possibly Egypt or the Maldives)

I wasn’t expecting much to be served, so had ‘stocked up’ in the lounge. The ham sandwich wasn’t the best ever, but was a adequate. My friend pointed out that Club had a hot breakfast and champagne.

We booked the penultimate flight of the day back to Heathrow with BA. Due to the incessant rain, we took an early shuttle back to the airport, after deciding it’d be better sitting around the airport, than sitting in a café soaking wet. We found the BA check in pretty easily. I normally prefer to check in at the desk (mainly as the SSCI machines normally issue those horrible receipt paper boarding passes), but in Amsterdam you have to squeeze past the machines to get to the desk, so we went with the machines in the end (which spat out real card boarding passes).

After a quick look around the duty free (which had some very slow queues), we headed to the BA Lounge. After a bit of research on flyertalk, it seemed like this lounge was just about the worst in the network, but had recently been given a ‘Galleries’ makeover. To be honest, I didn’t think the lounge was too bad (other than the very long walk from check in). the food selection hasn’t great, but far from terrible. On our way in, I noticed the JAL lounge next door. After twenty minutes in the BA lounge, we went over to the JAL one. As the JAL flight wasn’t taking off for another 3 hours, the lounge was very empty. It seems like the catering is done by the same company that does BA, as the contents were basically the same (with a few minor differences). We found a nice corner with a good view of the apron, and settled in for a few hours.

We left the lounge late again, which was lucky as when we arrived at the gate, everyone was still waiting to board. After a 10 minute wait, the staff asked for Club Europe and Gold pax to board – no mention of Silver, so it was another five minute before we could join the queue in the jetbridge.

We were to be departing from the Polderbaan (sp?) this evening, and the captain sounded rather annoyed about it – and I can sere why. It took a good twenty odd minutes to get there (that’s half the flight time!), following a Chinese Cargo B747, and being following by an easyJet.

So, another good pair of British Airways short haul flights. No complaints, and a very good fare. Amsterdam was great, somewhere everyone should visit at least once – there’s something for everyone! Just a shame that we had such little time.

Good report! Looks like you had a nice trip to Amsterdam .. this is definitely a place I'd like to visit. Those waffles with ice cream did look really good ..   Nice views from your flights too!

I know what you mean! My bag has the maximum allowable dimensions and I'm always wishing I had something just a tad smaller.

Ha! That's a funny insight. Similarly, it can be interesting to eavesdrop on other passengers talking (sometimes authoritatively) about the flight.Can't remember any specifics at the moment, but I know I've heard some funny comments over the years.

Looks like you had a great time in Amsterdam. Being in Brussels now, I must visit soon...never been there before.

I love AMS!!  
With regards to BA, i have full ID90 concessions with many (mainly Star) airlines, but these days i have decided to not bother using them on inter-europe trips, or indeed booking LCC carriers. BA's product is generally so much better anyone elses and it just makes the journey so much more pleasant! We are off to Cyprus in Feb and i have paid full fare on BA via LHR (ex MAN) rather than bother with staff travel or booking on mediocre airlines like Monarch etc....
Keep up the good work BA... many of us DO love you!

Working for a company based in Amsterdam (but living just near LHR!) I fly to and from AMS quite regularly, and often fly home in Club Europe on BA441. I haven't had a chance to try the revamped lounge yet as my company booked me on KL for my last flight home, but I would like to hope that the new lounge is a big improvement over BA's old lounge offering!! From what I understand, the new lounge only opened about three weeks ago. Still, the alcohol was free, so after a couple of vodkas you could overlook the small, drab lounge with only cheese, cream crackers and packets of crisps to keep you going!

AMS is a great airport though, and Amsterdam a great city. Glad you enjoyed your trip, and thanks for sharing your report.

Yeah, BA shorthaul, whilst not as good as a few years ago, still delivers a very good product, and the staff are light years ahead of most other carriers.

The reports I saw were all very mixed, some saying the lounge was still terrible (only a few cosmetic additons), others saying it was great. My friend said (and I agreed) that if they could have brought out some sandwhiches, then it woul have made all the difference. Crackers and cheese, crisps and pepperami just aren't what most people are looking for. Still, the free booze is ok. The JAL lounge offers better views, and is quieter, but is severely lacking in (non-Japanese) reading materials. JAL staff were better (more service orientated).

As an after thought, I'm still surpised how little lounge staff seem to know about entrance policies. In AMS, the lady in the BA lounge said she had no idea if BA Silver could get into the JAL lounge, and in LHR T3, the BA lounge didn't know if I could get into the AA lounge. Surely the staff know what lounges are available in their respective airport? I means the lounge access rules aren't that complicated, are they?

Anyway, great report. I flew LHR-AMS-LHR in August.. seems we had pretty comparable flights. I was also on BA441, just no A321! Which would have been nice..

Well, for 95% of pax that's a fair assumption, BUT they still ought to know what else there is, especially given that in most locations, there is porbably a maximum of only 1 or 2 other lounges. I'm sure there are plenty of situations where they need to redirect people to other lounges?

This is what I find annoying about flying out of AMS! Taking off/landing on the Polderbaan (36L-18R) is a risk you take when flying into AMS. Most foreign pilots are not happy when they hear they need to take off there. Maybe 24 (Kaagbaan) was a better idea  . Or the Zwanenburgbaan (36C-18C)

I don't know why AMS feel the need to use that runway unless the other 4 are all full (hard to belive given that LHR has more traffic and uses just 2 runways) - think off all that fuel being burnt just taxiing around.

LHR sure is busier. The KL flight I had last year was departed with 5 minutes delay, just in time for the runway change. Needed to taxi 5-10 minutes further, and also 30 minutes wait for taxi clearance. If we were on time, we could have been in AMS at time we took off.

A nice little report about your weekend trip to Amsterdam. I agree it is a special city, I've been there like six times and wouldn't hesitate to go back for more.

BA remains a high quality airline, very consistent and decent service with nowadays usually very good ticket prices as well. As a pax I actually prefer Gatwick, thins are much more manageable down there, but I guess as a BA pax the LHR T5 has its advantages. I of course prefer the classic Boeings over the boring Airbuses, so that's another nod towards Gatwick.

On BA short haul flights before 10:00am then you are served a small sandwich with a drink. Flights after 10:00am then you only serve nuts with a drink, or something similar that leaves you hungry.

Good to hear that the BA Galleries lounge in Amsterdam has improved since my last visit, as I will be back in Amsterdam for a few days in November. I hope they fixed the wifi since my last visit.

It is still the same pokey lounge in the same place.

The only difference is some new pictures and different chairs and lamp shades (thought some still have the old lampshades)

The layout is still the same

The food is still the same (Cup-a-soup, cheese and cream crackers as well as crisps)

The alcohol is still the same - certaily no champagne bar!

All in all - not really worthy of an email communication stating it was a new lounge. Kind of like lipstick on a pig.

Personally, Gatwick is not very handy for me (unless travelling midday during the week, due to the trains). Also, that lounge isn't great down in LGW. In terms of mile after mile of endless walking from the arrivals gate to immigration, LGW and LHR are about on par. At least all the walking gives you a chance to work off some of the G&Ts!

Didn't try out the wifi, so not sure about that. Might be worth getting something to read from the BA lounge, then heading over to the JAL lounge for the views and Japanese crackers!

Seems strange that BA would ,make such a song and dance about something that clearly won't fool the people who use it the most. Not the worst lounge in the world though, and for a first time visitor, it didn't seem too bad.

I always like to keep up with BA standards, especially after the strikes/ strife etc it is important for there to be no more excuses for people to not fly her.

Thanks Luke. The Jupiter was a Belgian Blonde Beer (although it didn't taste very blonde), and it was one of the few things that wasn't in the BA lounge. The other red can was Spa sparkling water (was in the BA lounge).

nice report, and even more to see your visit to the JAL Sakura Lounge in AMS. It's closed now, since JL stopped serving AMS unfortunately. The Jupiler beer is among my favourite brands, it's not easy to find in public places actually.

It's by far the most touristy red light district anywhere - Ia very mainstream destination.
