Qantas A380 Trip Report

Some aircraft change is good, but sometimes it is bad! I got both booking this trip. Flying QF’s A380s is relatively up high in my agenda and getting award seats in first class is possible, but you have to book very early, in which aircraft change happens. Anyhow in the end, I got downgraded to business class by CX due to its change from a Boeing 747-400 to a regional Boeing 777-200 from HKG to SIN, but the SIN to MEL segment has a change from Boeing 747-400 to Airbus A380-800, so you lose some, but gain some. The day began relatively easily from HKG and CX checked me all the way to Wellington, and issued all three boarding passes. I arrived early in Singapore and ventured around the renovated Terminal One for a while before settling down in the lounge. As I was spotting planes and venturing around, I noticed the flight information board changed for my flight QF 10. There was a new note asking passengers to visit the counter, and I immediately headed up to the QF lounge complex. The agent immediately informed me that the flight was delayed till 8am the next morning, and they were trying to rebook connections and making accommodation arrangement. Well with an award ticket, there was nothing to do but to relax in the lounge, turn on my laptop to check on connections, and notifying a few fellows about the flight change. Not much I can do and soon one of the supervisors approached me and introduced himself to me, and telling me that they would rebook me accordingly. I immediately told him that I would not mind spending the night here in Singapore but rebooked me to AKL if that was the case. It took a while for him to get the message that rebooked me to Auckland, not Wellington. I supposed to fly from WLG to AKL on Pacific Blue, and with this delay, I could not retrieve any value of the ticket, and QF could just bring me to AKL. At the end, QF arranged a nice overnight accommodation at the Mandarin Oriental Singapore hotel, which include dinner buffet with a choice of beverage and complimentary taxi rides to and from the airport, and as I arrived Melbourne the next day, the QF agent arranged another stay at the Hilton Melbourne Airport and free dinner and breakfast are included again. QF in general did a good job in taking care of everyone, despite losing that Pacific Blue ticket, it was an okay experience given the situation.

I am not going to write a long report because it was a fairly standard flight, and QF first class seats on the A380s have been written up much, and there was nothing much I would add. The seats were very nicely designed and comfortable, but of course, not as fancy as the suites on all the other airlines. However, with QF slowly bowing out from the first class market, I was not surprised. The inflight service was good, but not spectacular. The F/As and the purser introduced themselves to me, were very apologetic to the whole situation, accommodating all my needs, but just appeared a bit uptight. Cabin checks occurred, but things were a bit more uptight especially from Australia. I could not fault the crew and they even brought me an extra pair of pajama and a ladies’ kit, and the purser tried to compensate me due to the lack of dessert available. I guess QF gives me a more traditional first class service.

Food wise – I have mixed feelings but due to the delays, the meals were mixed up, and they ended up providing not the usual midmorning menu featured on Singapore to Sydney but a mix of breakfast and lunch, and of course some items were not there. The menu looks impressive but the meals coming out short. The crews were also bit hassled and forgetful. I was a bit shocked that no breads were offered with the meal, and you have to request everything. As a timid person, it is not to my benefit, but to QF defense, it did a pretty good job in being able to provide all these food in the last minute. I guess you can’t win all the time, but at of this point, I am no longer in a hurry to fly QF long-haul flight even the A380s in the near future, but will definitely try a longer flight next time.

I hope you enjoy the photo album!

Nice pics Carfield, shame about the delay but definitely can't complain about having a night in SIN!

I'm most certainly not a premium cabin expert, or even amateur really, but by the looks of it to me the best thing about QF First was the Amedei chocolates and the leg room. The cabin looked so drab and uninspiring, the space between the seat and the window is quite unusual and that food seemed like they were givng you the leftovers from LHR-SIN. Thankfully you had a good crew, but can that really make up for the rest of it?

= In their "flagship" First? I think you are far more forgiving than I would be for a First ticket ... especially if I was paying in other currency. This is not acceptable service protocol. What was the reason given for their being no dessert? Seems like they did well on the ground - but on the air stumbled.

Saludos,
A.
