Berlin To Mumbai Via LHR And Back With IT (Part 1)

Hey,
this is my first Trip Report on Airliners.net. This summer holidays my mother and I went to visit our family in Mumbai.

------INTRODUCTION------------
Our first choice actually would have been AI via FRA or LHR, but the timings were horrible, and we planned to arrive daytime. I was keen on trying AI's new product, as my last flight on AI was 2006 from FRA on their 744's. Also, I wanted to try 9W, so I searched for the option of flying to either BRU or LHR on SN or BA, connecting to a 9W red-eye to BOM, and flying AI back via FRA or LHR. The option was quite pricey though. QR also offered nice fares via DOH, but that included a transfer of 21 hours at DOH, not a very enticing thought. So I used opodo.com, for the first time. They offered this option:
TXL-LHR on BA985 (A319)
LHR-BOM on IT007 (A332)
BOM-LHR on IT008 (A332)
LHR-TXL on BD849 (A319)

This sounded great, as I have never flown IT and BD before. Also this would be my first leg on an A332 and my first transfer through T5.

This part covers the BA flight to LHR.

------BOOKING&OLCI-------------------
Booking was done quickly through Opodo's german website. OLCI was a breeze on BA's site, but my printer only printed some grey stripes, so I had to clean it, but printing the boarding cards again was no problem at all.

TXL is a 6 minute drive from home. BA's counter was very full. However the Club Europe counter was empty. The agent at that counter waived me through, and checked our baggage through to BOM. Really friendly man.

Boarding was a breeze. The Cabin was an old-style Airbus cabin. Funnily though, it was equipped with the older version of Euro Traveller seats on the left side and with the newer ones on the right side. Legroom was fantastic!

3 FA's on this one. Two elderly females, one younger male. Female pilot. She informed us, that the covering of the left wing was missing, but this would not be a hazard, we would only use more fuel. We lined up on 26L and after a quick rotation we were up in the air. Seatbelt signs were switched off and service began. I took tea and the sweet snack. The tea was fantastic. I spent the rest of the flight watching the moving map. During descend we were informed of a holding in LHR (as always  ) and that this was already built in our flightplan, so we would still arrive early. Approach to 27R was rather bumpy and fast.

Our final approach was really fast, and she flared very long, so we landed smoothly. After that we braked like mad. I never experienced such braking action before. We were literally thrown forward, we left the runway quickly and exactly after we left the holding point a EI A321 whooshed past us. After a long taxi we arrived at our jetway at T5. Deboarding took a while, but there we were, at T5.

Legroom on BA shorthaul is more than BA long haul which is absurd.

- Nice touch by the front office, those that are aware of these winglets might have been worried it was missing.

I thought QR offer a hotel for all passengers if transfers last over 8 hours?

Not bad for a trip to include so many 'firsts'

This has always happened no matter which short haul BA flight I've been on. Its quite funny to see some people hold on for dear life as they think something is wrong!
