Introduction

Dear fellow A.netters,

The thought of our failed attempt to get my partner and me upgraded on our outward flight from Munich to Doha haunted me during our holiday in Indonesia. As Qatar will be phasing out First Class next year, I was determined to fly F once again before it disappears from QR cabin.

Since our last chance would be the return leg DOH-MUC, I checked out the award flight availability almost on daily basis along our route on Java. The redemption finally came on our last day at Kura Kura Resort. Actually, we had each collected enough miles to upgrade both of us in once. But we decided to submit our request individually.

Due to circumstances, we were just in a position to check up our e-mail before going on board of Air Asia to Denpasar. We were delighted to find a confirmation of our upgrade award request. QR required us to contact the local QR office to reissue our ticket and further mentioned that the original ID of one of us had to be provided at the time of revalidation.

But to our horror while browsing further, we found out that our ticket must be reissued and collected before August 11th or otherwise the booking would be cancelled. We were on August 11th!

Knowing that we might be running late for the reissue of our tickets, we decided to visit the QR office anyway upon our arrival in DPS.

QR Office

QR’s Bali office is located at Discovery Kartika Plaza on South Kuta Beach, not too far away from the airport and accessible within ten minutes by the airport taxi.

Office facade

As we came in, we were immediately attended by Aprianto, a QR ticketing agent. “How can I help you, Sir?”
“We have learnt this morning that our upgrade request has been authorized. The only problem is we have to get our tickets reissued before August 11th and that is today!” I explained as I showed him our travel documents.

“I see. Let me check it out for you,” Aprianto took our documents and started typing. “I see that you have requested an upgrade for the flight from Doha to Munich. Is that correct?”
“Yes,”
“One for Mr. Akhmad. Is that you, Sir?”
I nodded.
“And one for Mr. …,” Aprianto was trying to pronounce my partner’s name to which I immediately replied. “Yes, that is correct,”
“And from Economy to Business?”
I was surprised by the question. “No, we have requested an upgrade from Business to First,”
“Well, in that case I will have get it rectified by Privilege Club. They have put the wrong information about your upgrade details,” Aprianto said while dialing the number of the Privilege Club desk.

I thought that the internal company connection would be established quickly. But Aprianto had to wait for a while before getting connected with Shamila from Privilege Club.
Upon passing our personal details, Aprianto explained the situation. “They have apparently requested an upgrade from Business to First, not from Economy to First as stated in their booking details. Could you please help me to revise it?”
Aprianto was then put on hold. It took a while before Shamila got back to him.
The matters were finally sorted out and we got our tickets reissued. Due to our individual upgrade request, I got a new PNR while my partner retained our previous joint PNR.
Aprianto printed out our tickets, attached them into a QR ticket envelope and handed it over to us.

“Thank you so much for your help,” my partner and I shook Aprianto’s hand on turn before leaving for Ubud.

Check In

Web Check In

As a courtesy of Seri Villas Seminyak, I could use the hotel laptop to conduct our on-line check in. That time, I had to check my partner and myself in separately.

Seat selection screen

Seven seats were blocked when it came to my turn. As I had already checked in my partner on 1E, I assumed that there would be another six other F passengers on board. The whole third row was available, so I figured out that we could take two adjoining aisle seats there in case someone got assigned my partner’s neighboring seat. Therefore, I was keeping my 1A.

Airport Check In

Charming DPS check-in agent Dewi issued our F boarding passes and passed them to us together with our Premium Terminal lounge invitations.

Doha International Airport

Our bus pulled off in front of the entrance of Premium Terminal. Somehow, I got thrilled when I saw it.

Entrance

Premium Terminal

Once walking past the door, I was surprised to find a manned transfer desk as it was 04.30. I got the feeling that QR had taken note of the single experience of fellow A.netter Abrelosojos with the airline last year.

Transfer desk

Two QR agents were standing by for connecting passengers. After scrutinizing our boarding passes, we were waived for the security check. Most passengers were incoming from DPS. I did not notice any passenger joining us from DOH.

Unmanned immigration desks

Deserted Premium check-in area

The security was painless. We were through just after 04.35. At that stage, the staircases after security seemed the stairways to heaven to me.

Staircases

Another QR agent, Paul, greeted us upstairs. After jotting down our names, he showed us the way to the right unlike on our outward journey.

First Class Lounge

As we walked past the sliding doors, the serenity embraced me instantly. The interior reminded me of Business Class Lounge interior before the recent floor expansion. It was equally divided in upper and lower surface area.

Upper level

Overview

The upper level was subdivided in a dining area just after the entrance on the right and a sitting area further up.

Glass waterworks

The buffet area was located right behind the waterworks, divided in the wall area and the island.

Buffet area, though not yet being set up

Dining area

The separation of the dining and sitting area was marked by a palm tree corner.

As we were in the holy month of Ramadan, alcohol consumptions were forbidden which meant a dry affair everywhere throughout the lounge.

Empty bar area

Although the lounge was practically deserted, there was still a lounge attendant on hand. Diana approached us as we walked past the dining area.
“Can I help you with anything, Sir?” she asked.
“We are fine, thank you. We were just exploring the lounge,”
“That is fine. Enjoy your stay,”

Lower level

The lower level was subdivided in a sitting area larger than the upper level and an internet corner.

Overview

The internet connection was very slow. I gave up using it after five minutes.

Internet corner

Next to the internet corner, there was a flat screen television. It was not switched on though.

The bar area was better stocked here.

We took a seat on the window side as F lounge was located on the apron side. Well, I was not disappointed.

As F passengers were entitled to free access to the Premium Spa, I took the chance for a visit. The spa opening hours apparently started from six o’clock in the morning. Spa attendant Sukanya greeted me as I entered. “Good morning, Sir,”
“Good morning. I am wondering whether I can have a massage,”
“Can you tell me your flight, Sir?” she asked.
QR 003,”
Sukanya left through her flight sheets and said to my disappointment, “I am sorry, Sir. I think it will not be possible as your flight will be leaving at 08.10. The working hours of our therapists start at eight o’clock ,”
‘Bummer!’ I thought.
“At this moment, we only have shower, sauna or Jacuzzi,” Sukanya continued.
“Thank you. I will think about it,”
“All right, Sir,”

Spotting Session

As I returned empty-handed to my seat, my partner came to me, “I have just taken a photo for you. Just see yourself through the window what I have got,”
My partner just knew how to cheer me up.

A lounge attendant, Caroline, who had her duty started at six o’clock, approached us.
“Good morning, Sir. Can I get you anything to drink?”
“Can we have orange juice, please?”
“Certainly,”
Our glasses of orange juice were delivered with a folded mini napkin.

Orange juice

After finishing my orange juice, I decided since I had to go without a massage, I at least had to sample the shower here.

Premium Terminal Spa

There were two doors at the end of the lounge corridor, one for the access to the relaxation area and one for the spa washrooms area.

I did not go beyond the door and went for the spa instead.

As I entered the washroom, a Sri Lankan attendant who was tidying up the washbasins, noticed my appearance and stepped aside.
“I just want to make a picture of the washbasins. May I?”
“Certainly,” he replied.

Washbasins

Like in the J lounge you could choose between paper or cotton towels to dry up your hands.

Towel choice

“Sir, we have Jacuzzi as well,” the attendant pointed to the right corner just past the washbasins.
“I see. Thank you,”

Jacuzzi

There were towels and mineral water bottles available within arm reach from the Jacuzzi. Impressive! I only forgot to ask where the sauna was.

After my photo taking, I returned to Sukanya. “Can I have a shower, please?”
“Your flight is QR 003, right?”
“That is correct,”
Sukanya browsed through her sheets and said, “All right, Sir. Please follow me,”
She knocked on the door first before entering the gentlemen’s. Interesting!
“Could you please attend this gentleman further? He wishes to have a shower,” Sukanya handed me over to the Sri Lankan attendant.
The attendant grabbed a large white towel out of nicely hidden wardrobe and went to the most right of many shower cabins. He knocked on the door first before waving me on.

Shower

The shower cabin was big and very well-appointed.

Shower amenities were available on the washbasin.

When you finished, you could choose to put a kimono on in case you wished to sample other spa facilities.

Somehow, it was seven o’clock when I finished. I quickly got dressed. As I came out, the attendant was already there waiting.
“Let me take care of the towel, Sir,” he said.
“Thank you,”
“Where are you from, Sir?”
“Netherlands. And how about you?”
“Sri Lanka,”
“I see. Well, thanks again for your hospitality,”
“You are welcome,”

FIDS

In the meantime, my partner was enjoying a cup of espresso which looked a good idea to me. I approached Caroline who was wandering in our direction.
“Miss Caroline, can you tell where I can get espresso?”
“I will get it for you, Sir. Please have a seat,”
Caroline promptly brought my espresso along with a glass of water, a tray of sugar cubes and the mini napkin.

At 07.20, a male lounge attendant approached us. “Excuse me, Sirs. Are you going to Munich?”
We nodded.
”Munich is boarding now,”
We quickly finished our espresso. After thanking Caroline for her service, we made our way downstairs towards Gate 3.

Boarding gate overview

My partner noticed two agents at Gate 3 nodding to each other as we walked down the escalator.

Our gate

One of the two agents took our boarding passes and returned the smaller stubs.
“Have a nice flight, Sir,” she said while waiving us through.
Another agent at the exit door took a glance at our boarding passes and immediately beckoned his colleague to greet us. The colleague turned out to be our driver to A7-AEC.
“Good morning, Sirs. Please follow me,”
Before I knew, we were whisked in a BMW7.

BMW7 Ride

As our driver was putting away our hand luggage, we took the opportunity to capture the interior.

The seats were made of fine leather.

Our driver jumped in, “How are you, Sir?”
“We are fine, thank you. And how are you?”
“I am fine, Sir,”
Soon enough, we hit the road.

Our BMW pulled in next to A7-AEC after some five minute ride.
“Please wait here, Sir,” our driver said as he jumped out.
After another five minutes, our driver returned.
“You can go on board, Sir,” he said after opening our doors.
As I got off, I noticed that passengers busses were nowhere to see. It looked like that my fellow passengers were already on board.
I took the chance to shoot some pictures.

Our ride on the ground

On my way upstairs, I took another picture.

Forward view

I did not notice the ramp agent who was standing before the entrance earlier.
“Hello,” I said when I saw him.
“Hello, Sir. Actually it is not allowed to take pictures,” the agent replied.
I only muttered, “Oh, I see,”
After my experience two years ago when I got tipped on my shoulder for taking picture on the tarmac, I was trying to be discrete, but not this time. I assumed that the agent could see clearly what I was about and yet he did not prevent me. ‘Was it because I was a F passenger?’

On Board

First Class Cabin

Flight attendant Mira greeted me at the door. Without any glance at my boarding pass, she just ushered me to the forward cabin. Walking past the mini forward J cabin, I entered the surprisingly empty F cabin. Tunisian Purser Imen met me halfway to 1A.
“Welcome on board, Sir. You can sit anywhere you like as you are our only First Class passengers on board,” she said. Apparently, my partner had notified her that we were traveling together. Nevertheless, I got very excited.
“Thank you, but I will stick to 1A,” I replied.
“That is fine, Sir,” Imen waived me on to 1A.
From that point, I could not stop taking pictures.

South Korean flight attendant Kim appeared to introduce herself.
“Good morning, Sir. My name is Kim. Together with my colleague Bela, I will be taking care of you during your flight to Munich. Can I offer you anything to drink?”
“Can I have champagne, please?”
“Certainly, Sir,”
Well, alcohol remained flowing generously on board. So I decided to take advantage of it.

While my champagne was being prepared, Kim emerged with handful newspapers and magazines.
“Do you wish to read any English newspaper or magazine?” she asked to me.
“No, thank you,”
Kim proceeded to my partner who took a newspaper. Bela delivered my champagne in the meantime.

My champagne

Kim returned to the cabin to the menu folds, followed by Bela who was holding a tray containing headsets, comfort bags and amenity kits.
“Sir, I have the pleasure to present you our today menu and our headset for your in-flight entertainment,” Kim said while passing the menu and headsets to me.
“We have got a comfort bag and amenity kit for you to make your journey more refreshing,”
After my partner was attended, hot or cold towel service followed.

Menu

The menu and beverage list were presented in a leather booklet.

Leather menu fold

As usual, I was curious about what QR had on offer.

Indulgence

Wine and Beverage

Unlike J, there was an introduction page.

Introduction

There was a choice of Champagne, four white wines, three red wines, port wine, assortments of spirits and liquors.

Champagne and French Chardonnay

New Zealand’s Sauvignon Blanc and German Riesling

Alsatian Gewurztraminer and French combination of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot

New Zealand’s Pinot Noir and Australian Shiraz

I had seen the Shiraz and the following port wine earlier in J beverage list.

Taylor’s Tawny Port and assortment of spirits and liquors

Non alcoholic drinks and beer were available as well.

Soft drinks, juices, water and beer

Headset

The noise cancelling headset was distributed in a leather jacket.

Well, I did not figure out whether it was a well-known Boise headset.

Comfort Bag and Amenity Kit

The comfort bag contained an eye mask and a pair of anti slip socks

Comfort bag and its content

A daytime amenity kit was offered in a leather bag. It was a unisex one like in J. The bag contained a mini notebook, a QR pen, earplugs, tissues and body care products.

Clockwise from above: Leather bag, tissue, QR pen, white body care product wrapping, earplugs and a mini notebook in a leather fold

Body care products consisted of Prada’s refreshing tissues and eau de toilette and La Prairie’s lip balm and hand cream.

Kim and Bela came back again. Kim was holding a coffee jug and several mini cups from the galley while Bela got a mini basket of dates.
”Can I offer you a cup of Arabic coffee?” Kim asked

Arabic coffee utensils

“I would love to,” I replied.
As Kim poured the coffee, Bela asked, “How about some dates?”

Date basket

“Certainly,”

My Arabic coffee and date

“We only do this in First Class by the way,” Bela remarked.
“I notice it,” I smiled.
I enjoyed how the cardamom taste in the coffee went harmoniously with the sweet date.

Kim came back to take the drink and breakfast order.
“Are you joining us for breakfast, Sir?” she attended me first.
“Certainly, I would like to have the smoothie, the salad plate and the omelette please,”
“Do you wish anything to go with the omelette? Veal burger, grilled salmon or chive fitter?”
“Veal burger, please,”
“Certainly, Sir,”
“Do you want anything to drink?”
“I would like to have the Chardonnay, please,”
“Certainly, Sir,”
Kim went on attending my partner. It was rather strange that I could not really hear what my partner was ordering due to our gap.

Just before 08.00, a welcome announcement was made, “Good morning, ladies and gentlemen. My name is Imen. I am the purser of your flight. On behalf of Captain Sanghera and the remaining crew members, I wish you a nice welcome to our flight to Munich. Our flight time will be five hours and fifty five minutes. We will be taking off in about fifteen minutes,”

At 08.00, another announcement followed, “All customers are on board. Ground crew, please leave the aircraft for boarding,”

A7-AGC was running late

The doors were closed at 08.10

Taxi

Push-back commenced at 08.15. As A7-AEC was parked on the nearest distance to the active runway, we bypassed A7-AGC. The lovely humming engine sound started to fill the cabin.

As expected, there were no touch screens.

Stowage

What caught my attention were the many stowage options within your arm reach like the B77W’s J seat.

Companion seat holder

There was a laptop plug-in socket. But it was only visible from the companion seat.

Laptop plug-in behind the metal lid

On the left side of the companion seat, there was a locker containing two wool blankets.

Companion seat locker

How about my own seat? Well, there was a cupboard on the right.

Right cupboard

A drawer could be pulled from the cupboard.

Drawer containing more blankets

On the left side, there was a niche, wide enough to stow your IFE control unit temporarily.

Niche

Seat pocket

Unlike other seat interiors, the seat pocket was located on the upper left wall of the companion seat. The content of the plastic fold looked similar to the one on our previous QR flights. An in-flight magazine, an IFE guide, a duty free guide and a common A330 in-flight safety card. But I found something I did not see earlier, a ‘Fly Healthy Fly Fit’leaflet, containing useful tips like self massage, yoga, meditation and health advice.

Last but not least, an individual reading light was at hand as well.

Just before 08.35, my smoothie was delivered.

Banana and mango smoothie

I had banana and mango smoothie couple times earlier where the banana was mostly too dominating, but this time, it was perfect. The banana hints were nicely blended with the mango.

Couple minutes later, Kim appeared to set my table. As I pulled out the table, I remembered how astonished I was when seeing it for the first time nearly three years ago.

Revealing the table width

Massive table

Kim observed the QR table setting procedure. She laid the table cloth first, then proceeded to fold the napkin across and lay it on my lap. She put my smoothie on the table before going back to the galley.

Basic table setting. Note the red napkin for F.

Kim returned with a water glass and a side plate transporting an array of a breakfast bakery bowl, a butter dish, a pair of salt and pepper containers and a bread knife. She started with the glass and continued with other utensils.

Complete table setting

Kim emerged with each on her hand a bottle of still or sparkling water. “Still or sparkling water, Sir?”
“No, thank you,”
As Kim slunk off, Imen brought my starter. “Enjoy your meal, Sir,”
My Chardonnay was delivered soon after.

Salad plate of gravlax and branade of salted cod

The gravlax tasted great on the rye bread slice. The crispy lettuce delivered a great taste sensation to the branade. The cheddar and the cucumber served for the neutralization.

As I was finished, my starter was promptly replaced by the main meal. Kim followed up with an array of condiments.
“Do you wish to have Tabasco, ketchup or mustard with your meal?”
“No, thank you,”

Lobster omelette with herb prawn sauce, sautéed mushrooms, asparagus and veal burger

The combination of omelette, mushrooms, asparagus and veal burger was QR’s another signature dish. The fluffy omelette was melting in your mouth. The mushrooms and asparagus made the regular veal burger something stylish.

Somehow, it took a while for my partner’s main meal to come.

Bela finally emerged with his main meal and was very apologetic, “I am so sorry for the delay, Sir. I hope you enjoy your meal,”

My partner’s breakfast tart with sautéed English spinach

Right after I finished my main meal, Kim appeared to collect my main meal dish.
“Do you want coffee or tea?” she asked.
“Can I have double espresso, please?”
“Certainly, Sir,”
My double espresso was promptly delivered with a mini box of Godiva chocolate.
“Would you like to keep the bread?” Kim asked as she was clearing my table.
“No, thank you,”
“All right, Sir,” Kim took everything away.
Mira distributed hot towels soon after.

My double espresso set

After finishing my espresso, I put my seat in the lie-flat position. Before I knew, I fell asleep.

German Time Zone

I woke up in a darkened cabin. All window shades were closed. I noticed that my espresso cup was cleared away. Instead, there were a bottle of mineral water and a glass. What a nice touch!

I lifted my window shade a little.

The cabin was immersed in a soft blue light.

My partner relocated himself to 2A, as his previous 1E was partially broken and hence could not go lie flat. He was asleep. I decided to pay a visit to the other cabins.

Business Class Cabin

On the contrary to the forward mini J cabin, the cabin lights stayed illuminated in the aft cabin, even though all window shades were closed.

Aft J cabin

I counted eleven passengers in J. As there were 24 J seats on board, the load was light.

Economy Class Cabin

The Y cabin was fairly full with empty seats here and there.

I went to check out the F left lavatory. It had its own window in case you get bored inside.

The lavatory was kept clean and well stocked. There were some dental and shaving kits along with the usual Molton Brown set of hand lotion, eau de toilette and hand soap.

Front Galley

There were couple hours yet to go, so I decided to socialize with Kim and Bela. Imen was there as well, as I entered the front galley. All of them got enthusiastic when I asked them to provide some details about the flight.

“His name is Reem Sanghera,” Imen replied to my question about the name of the captain. “Let me get you our flight sheet,”
As I was copying the name, Imen continued, “Do you want to know the name of the copilot as well? His name is Horacio Guillermo Nossi. He is Argentinian,”
“So, are you writing a journal?” Bela asked.
I nodded yes.
“Oh, that is good. Do you work in the travel industry?” Bela continued.
“Not at all. It is just a hobby of mine. Well, I just want to thank you all for the lovely service so far,”
“Would you mind filling out our in-flight survey?” Bela asked.
“Sure,” I replied as I took a survey form Bela gave me. “I will get back to you,”

Survey form

As I returned the form, I asked whether I could have a picture with them. Imen politely refused, but Bela and Kim were willing to cooperate. When Mira joined the party, Kim offered to take a picture.

With Mira and Bela, a courtesy of Kim

We were engaged in conversation again. I learnt that both Kim and Bela had four year experience as flight attendant. Bela was employed by Jet Airways for a year, before moving to QR.

Before returning to my seat, I expressed my gratitude once again. Bela just said, “It cheers me up to know that you appreciate our efforts. I wish I could hear it more often,”

As I lifted the window shade, we were flying above Turkey. The weather cleared up. My partner woke up not long after I returned to my seat. We decided to sample some red wines I went for the New Zealand’s Pinot Noir, while my partner the Bordeaux one. Bela appeared with two filled wine glasses.

My Pinot Noir

“We poured the wines in the galley because it was not eating time yet. Normally, the procedure is that we showed you the wine and let you taste it before pouring,” Bela explained.
“Never mind,” I said.
“Do you want some nuts with your wine?”
“No, thank you. We will have it this way,”
While sipping on my wine, I enjoyed Turkey passing by.

At 11.20, Kim emerged in the cabin to take my order from Indulgence menu. Bela followed her to take charge of my partner. He was back to his 1E in the meantime.
“Do you care anything from our Indulgence menu?” Kim asked.
“Yes, please. I would like to have the carrot soup, the dish with foie gras and the ice cream, please,”
“Certainly, Sir. Do you want anything to drink to go with it?”
I was thinking about keeping the Pinot Noir until Bela turned to me, “Do you want to taste the French one? I have already opened it. You can have it in a small glass first,”
“Sure,”

Above Bulgaria, it became slightly turbulent. Nevertheless, Bela proceeded to set my table. It looked like that Kim and Bela exchanged duty. The table setting procedure was well observed as usual.

Table setting. Note the two red wine glasses on the left

Bela returned with a bread basket. I got attended first. I decided to take one and skip other bread option.

Bread basket

My soup was soon delivered. It was a hot and sweet affair accompanied with a crispy sensation of sesame crepe.

Wild carrot soup with hazelnut and mint pide

After serving my soup, Bela just started to set my partner’s table. Kim followed her with my partner’s first course. It was similar to my second course. While writing this report, I realized that the serving sequence was a bit odd.

Balik salmon, foie gras and gulf sushi with crisp salad leaves

The foie gras was a mischievous but heavenly option. It was somewhat too dominating against the salmon and the sushi. I just had to wash it down after every bite before continuing with the others. S

Bela kept checking us, “Would you like to have some more bread?”
“No, thank you,” I said.

My second course was cleared up. Bela brought me a fruit plate. I got a bit puzzled.
“Thank you, miss Bela. But unfortunately I can not remember ordering a fruit plate,”
Bela realized her mistake. “Oh, I am so sorry, Sir. It was supposed for your travel companion,”

Sliced fresh fruit

Bela then returned with my ice cream.

Pistachio and vanilla ice cream with forest berries

The ice cream with forest berries is a QR’s signature dessert. You just cannot fault it.

Our tables were cleared up as soon as we were finished. Mira was again in charge for the hot towel distribution.

As we were flying above Austria, the sky became overcast.

Graz airport

As a finishing touch, I suggested my partner to have each a double espresso and a Glenfiddich. Bela took care of our order.

Just before 12.35, Captain Sanghera spoke on the intercom, “Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. Within couple minutes, we will start our descent to Munich. We expect to land in Munich on time. I hope you are enjoying your flight with us,”

As the descent started at 12.35, the fasten seat belt signs were illuminated.

Cloudy German sky

Five minutes later as the cabin got prepared for landing, the menu folds were recollected.

Descent on progress

At 12.50 as A7-AEC was approaching the MUC 08R-26L runway, Captain Sanghera made a following announcement, “Cabin crew, please be prepared for landing,”
Before get seated, Bela appeared to personally thank both my partner and me, “Thank you for flying with us. We hope we can be serving you again,”

The undercarriage was released ten minutes after the announcement.

A7-AEC touched down at 13.05. Another one of the many QR smooth landings.

Seconds after touch down

A7-AEC kept rolling and vacated the runway on the 08R marking for a long trek to the gate. Well, I did not mind.

Disembarking

As the cabin lights were illuminated, we were allowed to collect our luggage.

Last F cabin shot

Bela emerged to say goodbye and remained in the F cabin.

As the air bridge was connected to 2L door in J cabin, we had to join others to go outside. Imen, Kim and Mira was standing before exit. “Good bye, Sir. Thank you for flying with us,”
“Thank you too,” I happily smiled to them.

Nose view

View towards the tail

We were directed to the third floor for non-Schengen arrival. I liked how the passenger flows were organized here.

Halfway on the second floor

The third floor gave us a stunning tarmac view.

Bye A7-AEC

A LH agent was standing by for connecting passengers.
“G28,” she said as I asked her about the departure gate of our connecting LH 836.

FIDS

To my surprise, FIDS showed G40 instead.

Anyway, we decided to follow the direction to the G gates anyway.

Signage

Automatic swing door

As soon as I walked through the swing door, my QR experience came to an end.

Conclusion

Until 19th August, I regretted that I did not capture more of our experience in F when we got upgraded by QR three years ago from LHR to DOH. But now, I got the feeling that we made it up to ourselves.

Lounge

There was indeed no alcohol serving in the lounge during Ramadan. Well, I should have known it as we could not get any alcohol when we visited the J Lounge two years ago on one of the last days of the holy month. I was also surprised about the slow internet connection. Did it have anything to do with Ramadan?

Regarding the lounge spa, I wished QR would mention the opening hours and the working hours of the therapist on the website. Just to manage expectations.

But those were the only drawbacks. Overall, the F lounge had everything you wished for. Extensive dining and sitting area, complimentary spa facility and lounge attendants like Caroline and the Sri Lankan male agent who were genuinely willing to ensure you to have a pleasant stay.

On board

For me, it was the best flying experience ever. Being the only two in the F cabin and getting the full attention of Imen, Kim, Bela and Mira were more than I could have imagined.

As you might notice, I have made slight adjustments to the layout. Please let me know what do you think of it.

Hi, Suryo -

Another really nice report! Wow, so lucky that you got to be the only passengers in F. I remember when I flew on a short flight in the US at one time a few years ago, and there were only 9 passengers on the F-100; it felt like we had all the attention in the world .. But, no where as nice as your experience!

What a nice looking cabin, and the service and food looks good as always.

Thanks for sharing!

Hi Suryo,

Once again, you inspired me on this report. However, QR's F Class does not look as good as their F class, probably my eyes playing tricks on me? Also, the screens in J Class looks larger than that in F, but I'm definitely sure this is an optical illusion. Envious that you got to try airlines from 5-star to LCC in a trip, hopefully I'll be able to plan such a trip in the future too, but to Europe of course!

Hi Suryo,

another excellent report with great pictures. Good to hear you managed to get the upgrade. While QR's F Class design is not to my taste, I'm impressed by the catering.

Quoting akhmad (Thread starter):
“I am sorry, Sir. I think it will not be possible as your flight will be leaving at 08.10. The working hours of our therapists start at eight o’clock ,”
‘Bummer!’ I thought.

That's odd considering that many QR flights leave at night or in the early morning.

Quoting akhmad (Thread starter):
“Hello, Sir. Actually it is not allowed to take pictures,” the agent replied.

I hate that sentence...

Quoting akhmad (Thread starter):

Wow, QR does indeed have too many F Class seats currently...

Hi Suryo,

It must have been stressful wondering whether you would get the upgrade that you wanted. I am glad that it worked out for you.

That's impressive, getting a BMW to take you to the aircraft.

How funny. When I read the menu for breakfast I said the banana and mango smoothie sounds nice and then I scroll down and see that's what you chose.

The attentiveness and personal service obviously have made this a memorable journey for you. It really is nice when the the cabin crew have only a couple of people to pamper.

Quoting akhmad (Reply 3):

Hi Akhmad,

A fitting finale to your series of TR's. A good description overall.

Quoting akhmad (Thread starter):
The matters were finally sorted out and we got our tickets reissued. Due to our individual upgrade request, I got a new PNR while my partner retained our previous joint PNR.
Aprianto printed out our tickets, attached them into a QR ticket envelope and handed it over to us.

Good it was sorted out.

Hi Suryo,

This has to be my favourite report in this your series. I am so pleased that the F upgrade worked out for your both and that you were able to collect the tickets before the deadline. And what a way to end your long trip, it seems you were looked after very well on QR.

I find that quite disappointing. Being in a F-class lounge and having a spa that opens at 6am, they should have the staff on hand at that time too.

That jacuzzi looks great too, what a way to prepare for your flight!

I like your idea of having your photo taken with the crew, although Iike on this occasion I guess there's some staff who prefer not to partake.

Quoting akhmad (Thread starter):
Before returning to my seat, I expressed my gratitude once again. Bela just said, “It cheers me up to know that you appreciate our efforts. I wish I could hear it more often,”

It's the same the world over. People are quick to complain, but rarely take the time to give positive feedback.

Happy flying

Suryo,

It seems to be the "First Class" season here on A.Net with so many reports on the ultimate joy of flying. Thanks again for writing this final installment.

I am not surprised with QR's product. In the air, it is simply fantastic - and I maintain, it has the best combination of hard and software of all the 3 major GCC carriers. I have constantly got fantastic crew who remind me the importance of consistent service.

I know you were OK with the ground service ... but I remain to be convinced that it is top notch.

Quoting akhmad (Thread starter):
Once walking past the door, I was surprised to find a manned transfer desk as it was 04.30. I got the feeling that QR had taken note of the single experience of fellow A.netter Abrelosojos with the airline last year.

= ... yes, my report definitely went pretty high up in QR. Ground ops were managed by a fellow Venezuelan ... so maybe that's why it helped  . Anyways, I have had other consistently bizarre and un-premium experiences at DOH and have decided it is better to give them a break for a year or so. Below is what I mean:

Quoting akhmad (Thread starter):

= ?! Given so much of their bank structure for transit is featured around the odd mid-night to 8am hours, why the hell would a premium lounge not have the spa open?! When one pays First prices, these are things they should not ignore.

Having said that, an overall amazing trip, and definitely a fitting end to your travels.

Thanks for taking us with you.

Saludos,
A.

Hi Suryo!

Many thanks for a superb series of TR's on your epic Indinesian journey! Flying First Class on your favorite airline could not be any more appropriate than this as a grand finale

First Class indeed does seem to be 'in' around here this season, as Alex pointed out

The meal offering was quite impressive, and so was the meal presentation. I think QR has the classiest presentation out of the GCC carriers.

As for the seat, it reminds me of a relative of CX's older First Class seat which has great legroom, but a rather tiny IFE screen. I was especially impressed with the abundant supply of storage space around your seat, which lately is quite rare in today's more modern premium seats!

Regarding the Ramadan 'policy', it is quite normal in this part of the world where the serving of alcohol would not be available in many places. Though i think at airports like AUH and DXB it is served as normal for non-Muslims.

Many thanks for your efforts on compiling these reports!

Hi Suryo,

Nice conclusion to your epic Asian trip, I think this is my favorite part of the series, first class sure makes the extra difference...

Very good looking food and service onboard, although there seemed to be one or two mishaps which probably shouldn't happen in F anyway. Still, great to have your own private cabin for you and your partner!

Quoting akhmad (Thread starter):
As Qatar will be phasing out First Class next year, I was determined to fly F once again before it disappears from QR cabin.

Oh, that's a bugger. But sign of the times I guess, even the rich folks in the Gulf area are not so willing to shell out for F anymore...

Quoting akhmad (Thread starter):
. QR required us to contact the local QR office to reissue our ticket and further mentioned that the original ID of one of us had to be provided at the time of revalidation.

Now that sounds very stupid to me - this is the age of e-tickets and everything, why would you need to show up physically at a ticketing office to process the upgrade, let alone have a very tight deadline to do so. Reissuing the ticket I can understand (although many airlines have systems where you can be upgraded without that), but having all this hassle - no idea!

Quoting akhmad (Thread starter):
Aprianto printed out our tickets, attached them into a QR ticket envelope and handed it over to us.

They didn't have any F ticket jackets over there? Looks a bit weird actually. Then again you don't really have a ticket in there, just the printout.

Quoting akhmad (Thread starter):
As we were in the holy month of Ramadan, alcohol consumptions were forbidden which meant a dry affair everywhere throughout the lounge.

While I'm all for observing and respecting local habits and culture I still think that this is a bit ridiculous for such a place, I bet more than half of the customers passing through the premium terminal and lounges do not observe the Ramadan at all. Maybe they could have a separate space without it or perhaps during the Ramadan the (non-observant) lounge staff could serve it to you upon request or something.

Quoting akhmad (Thread starter):
Sukanya left through her flight sheets and said to my disappointment, “I am sorry, Sir. I think it will not be possible as your flight will be leaving at 08.10. The working hours of our therapists start at eight o’clock ,”

This again is ridiculous. They have lots and lots of flights during the morning departure bank, and what's the best way recover from an overnight flight than a good massage!

Quoting akhmad (Thread starter):
To my surprise, FIDS showed G40 instead.

I was very confused to see "Hermannstadt" listed in the destinations, I consider myself to have decent knowledge of geography but had never heard of this place. Well, a little googling provided an interesting surprise - sometimes the names of cities in German are completely different from what you expected!

Are you still going to write an epilogue of the last part with LH?

Congratulations on another fantastic report. Great photos as usual and a nice story to go with them.

Thank you for your nice words. You make me happy with them.

Godiva Chocs always impress me

Me too since the first encounter on board of QR three years ago.

@ Christoph:

Quoting Contact Air (Reply 17):
Really outstanding report about this unique flying experience.

Thank you. It has been a pleasure to share it with you.

Quoting Contact Air (Reply 17):
Amazing, being the only passengers in First and having the cabon for yourselves. It seems like you could really enjoy the outstanding service and the great meals which look really delicious.

Definitely. I was also enjoying the lengthy chat with Bela, Imen and Kim as no one else would press the attendant call button, except my partner.

@ Roni:

Quoting ronerone (Reply 18):
Many thanks for a superb series of TR's on your epic Indinesian journey!

You are welcome, Roni. Glad you liked it.

Quoting ronerone (Reply 18):
Flying First Class on your favorite airline could not be any more appropriate than this as a grand finale

Definitely. I wished to fully capture QR's First Class before it disappears.

Quoting ronerone (Reply 18):
First Class indeed does seem to be 'in' around here this season, as Alex pointed out

Could we A.netters have had a telepathic communication about it this year?

Quoting ronerone (Reply 18):
I think QR has the classiest presentation out of the GCC carriers.

Good to know that from a well experienced traveler like you.

Quoting ronerone (Reply 18):
I was especially impressed with the abundant supply of storage space around your seat, which lately is quite rare in today's more modern premium seats!

Are you serious? I assume that EK Suite for instance has masses of storage space.

Quoting ronerone (Reply 18):
Though i think at airports like AUH and DXB it is served as normal for non-Muslims.

Silly me. I knew it would have been better not to travel through DOH during Ramadan after our experience two years ago.

Quoting ronerone (Reply 18):
Many thanks for your efforts on compiling these reports!

You are welcome. Thanks for dropping by.

Quoting ronerone (Reply 18):
Very nicely structured! I like it!

Thank you for your feedback!

@ P.:

Quoting FlyingFinn76 (Reply 19):
Nice conclusion to your epic Asian trip, I think this is my favorite part of the series, first class sure makes the extra difference...

Thank you. I am happy to know that. I was doing my best to document this part.

Quoting FlyingFinn76 (Reply 19):
But sign of the times I guess, even the rich folks in the Gulf area are not so willing to shell out for F anymore...

Could QR be losing the F passengers in favor EK or EY?

Quoting FlyingFinn76 (Reply 19):
Now that sounds very stupid to me - this is the age of e-tickets and everything, why would you need to show up physically at a ticketing office to process the upgrade, let alone have a very tight deadline to do so. Reissuing the ticket I can understand (although many airlines have systems where you can be upgraded without that), but having all this hassle - no idea!

You have rightly poninted it out. I wonder why QR cannot follow the example of BT for instance. It was our first upgrade attempt on miles redemption and we are yet to experience the hassle free on-line upgrade.

Quoting FlyingFinn76 (Reply 19):
They didn't have any F ticket jackets over there? Looks a bit weird actually.

I did not particularly ask a F ticket jacket. It did not bother me actually as I was holding a F ticket.

Quoting FlyingFinn76 (Reply 19):
Maybe they could have a separate space without it or perhaps during the Ramadan the (non-observant) lounge staff could serve it to you upon request or something.

Good suggestion. Let see what QR is up to with the F lounge next year.

Quoting FlyingFinn76 (Reply 19):
This again is ridiculous. They have lots and lots of flights during the morning departure bank, and what's the best way recover from an overnight flight than a good massage!

Sad indeed. A really missed opportunity.

Thanks again for reading.

Cheers,
Suryo

Hola Suryo!

Again a wonderful TR.

Being it the last part of your Asia trip I think it is a great way to end your vacation days. It remains me of the days I used to travel on Inter-rail around Europe buying food in the supermarkets and having our last meal in a restaurant before returning home, if there was any money left, otherwise we would visit MCDonald's.

QR First looks definitely the best flying hardware and the crew on this flight were as well one of the best around from what I have read in these pages.

The spa incident is quite odd, I thought that having so many flights during night hours it had to be a 24/7 service. I think they should sort out this gap.

Salut!

Roger

Great Report Suryo! I hadn't realised that F was being removed on all routes. I thought they might keep it on a few routes like LHR and CDG.

Looks like QR in F are very good. It's a shame, like you said, that they don't publicise the operating times of the Spa on their website. I would have been very angry to have missed out! The service also seems great. I get the impression tjhat in the Middle East the crew are not often thanked! I'm sure they appreciated it!

I think it's a bit strange that the lounge was completely dry when there was no restriction onboard.

Hey, Suryo,

good and detailed work again.
Superb pictures from the lounge and DOH, you know I´ve been there also but only during nighttime.
Really interesting, well done.

I hadn't realised that F was being removed on all routes. I thought they might keep it on a few routes like LHR and CDG.

The F will completely disappear as soon as the A346's leave the fleet. QR F will be replaced by next generation J cabin.

I was deeply disappointed, but at that moment, there was nothing I could do.

Agreed. Your gratitude will cheer them up for sure.

I think It has something to do with Qatari regulation. Outside the airport you were not even allowed to eat and drink during the day of Ramadan.
