Dolomiti/Regional E-Jet comparison and an AF upgrade

http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/I1004/I1004022.jpg

Ciao, dear readers,

it´s one week ago, since my arrival back home from the UK

Metroliner Parcelforce On The Daily Shift (by FLIEGER67 Oct 15 2010 in Trip Reports)

time to go for some more flying.

No new airports today, but two new E-jets, worth the way, from my point of view.

Service LH 1351 operated by Lufthansa
Scheduled: 06.05 // 06.55

Booking four legs together is once again the way to calm the fare down.
Some 40.00 Euro´s for the first leg, managed by Exp.de.
OLCI works perfect the day prior to my flight, 24F, the last row window and three for me that early morning.
Arriving home from a birthday party at around 2.00 am, the cell phone calls me at 03.30 am,
fairly enough time to sleep, isn´t it?.
My car knows the way for the airport.
Boarding on the paper at 05.45 am, at the airport half an hour ahead.
No time to wait at T1 security, the plane is at the finger gate 173, it spends the night here.
D-AILT "Straubing" is the A319 like on schedule, a new registration for me and leg no. 58 on type.
LH operates actually 20 A 319´s.
In service with LH since 04.11.1997, two times leased out for a couple of months since then to Germanwings.
Condor with some three hours delay to Las Palmas, but no bad sign for my flight

Comfortable dark grey leather, spacious and clean seaters in the last row, recline is possible

The dark cabin, no screens, the safety demo is manual
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/I1004/I1004007.jpg
A very short takeoff from runway 07, it is 06.10 am, close to ontime, cloudy and wet, the temperature is 14 degrees.
25 minutes only for FRA, we will see.
Three female FA´s here, all middle aged and frienly, one blonde with a eastern touch, really good looking.
Between the clouds, the load is some 70%, no service on this leg
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/I1004/I1004008.jpg
The FO is on the speakers, we´re in a holding pattern southwest of FRA for a couple of minutes.
Heavy traffic and not the best weather conditions are the reasons.
The safety card
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/I1004/I1004009.jpg
Touchdown at 07.05 am, 25 minutes flighttime announced, 55 minutes in the end, but nevertheless only ten minutes late.
The 4000 meters runway 07L this morning, also here cloudy and 16 degrees.

Service Lufthansa LH 4010 operated by Air Dolomiti
Scheduled: 08.40 // 09.55

This leg is the second one of four in the booking, the fare also some 40.00 Euro´s.
OLCI works again well, Check-In is done for 28F, the last three rows blocket on the seatmap.
My plane is inbound from VRN, some twenty minutes late
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/I1004/I1004016.jpg
Gate A25 for my flight, changed from A23 on the OLCI paper
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/I1004/I1004017.jpg
Time enough to walk down to the far end of the A gates, for some apron and runway views,
no pics due to the bad lighting
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/I1004/I1004019.jpg
Also departure looks some twenty minutes late
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/I1004/I1004020.jpg
Boarding is interesting, the nice single female agent prepared the two self boarding gates and wait beside, all the pax need to go there. Imagine how the less frequent travellers react, panic, taking their boarding passes and dont know how to hold it above the scanners.
Try to push the glass doors.
Finally after some twenty to thirty pax she gives up and opened the door for standard boarding, so far with the automatic revolution.
I do the self boarding gate as one of the last pax and it works fine for me without problems.
By bus the long way close to the 4000 meters runway 18, also our departure runway and the LH cargo area.
Approaching my plane
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/I1004/I1004021.jpg
Nice theme on the fuselage "Nabucco"
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/I1004/I1004022.jpg
Some surprise by a couple of passengers not to see a LH plane
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/I1004/I1004023.jpg
I-ADJL is finally the plane like on the internal system.
The warm welcomed Embraer 195, in service with Air Dolomiti since 15.02.2009 and a new registration for me, leg no. 2 on type only, till now.
The second delivered of actually five examples in the Air Dolomiti fleet
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/I1004/I1004024.jpg

http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/I1004/I1004027.jpg
I´am boarding late, as usual, the last pax after doing some pictures on the apron. 31 is the last row,
completely open, a nice chat with the two FA girls and so 31F is me, small seat recline is possible here.
The load is some 70%.
Three female FA´s, all announcements in German, English and Italian.
Two younger, a blonde and a black haired and one elder FA, nice.
Comfortable seats, blue green leather, good legroom, clean so far
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/I1004/I1004028.jpg
No screens, the safety demo is manual.
It is 09.00 am, 20 minutes late, like the forecast, the sky is cloudy and the temperature is 16 degrees.
1 hour, 05 minutes bound for Torino.
Cockpit crew is from Italy, the captain with a nice welcome during boarding.

Through the finger gate in the terminal and quickly out in the public.
Also here is now a train shuttle service to the City called Dorafly operational, running with ultramodern swiss Stadler railcars to Torina Dora and further by small city buses on a circle route around the city,
with the final destination again Torina Dora, that´s my way to go for some city pix.
Around 6.00 Euro´s for the open daily ticket.
Next departure 10.49 am, at Dora 11.08 am
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/I1004/I1004047.jpg
Anyone know´s what kind of a special date it is in Italy today?.
It´s "Ferragosto", the absolutely peak day around Italy´s summer vacation season.
And you know what this mean, the train is running, ok, but no city bus service today.
So, immediatelly when I notice this, I check the next train, go back to the airport for some pics there and make the best of it, as always.

What will the less frequent customer do in such a situation like now.
Arrival at T2D is printed on the paper, no information, but this is definitely T2G.
Self service to the terminal, a nice welcome from an arab style young female.
40 minutes now till boarding for the next flight at T2D.
Out in the public, for the bus shuttle to the other terminals, the bus is on stand, departed shortly and running slowly, with a couple of stops.
It is finally 3.10 pm, when I´am at T2F. 15 minutes till boarding. The bus driver takes a break. I know that it is possible to walk from here to T2D.
Powerwalking and ten minutes later I´am at T2D, thanks god OLCI is done for 22F, the last row window and there is no one in front at security.

Service AF 2308 operated by Air France
Scheduled: 15.55 // 17.15

Finally at boarding time at my gate D56 for the last flight of the day to STR, the fare is also here
some 40.00 Euro´s
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/I1004/I1004078.jpg
Once again, what happens with the less frequent flyer in this situation, CDG is definitely not the easy connection place to go.
Now, this is F-GUGM, the scheduled A318, in service since 13.04.2006 for AF.
One of 18 actual A318´s with AF.
Leg no. 7 on type and new registration no. 4 today
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/I1004/I1004079.jpg
What a rainy day here
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/I1004/I1004080.jpg
Boarding starts some minutes late, a rather long queue at the gate, looks like another good loaded flight for AF today.
I´am boarding as one of the last pax and surprise, my OLCI paper doesn´t work, the gate agent picks it up and handed me a classic one out.
Seat 4A, upgrade to Premium, well done AF today, that feels perfectly good
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/I1004/I1004081.jpg
Wide blue fabric seats, clean, generous legroom, the load is 100%, as far as I see from upfront.
Cockpit crew is from France, the male captain is at the planes door during boarding, later on with also a friendly welcome on the speakers.
It´s a female FO today.
The terminal

1 hour to go for STR

http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/I1004/I1004104.jpg
To the T3 finger gate
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/I1004/I1004105.jpg
The captain is at the planes door and wishes me a nice day,
real good service here on AF.

Out in the public and quickly on the way back home.

Now, what is the highlight of the day?. For sure, the upgrade on AF and the A318,
but Dolomiti and the Embraer is also recommendable, nice cabin crew there.

Two weeks to go now for

"Skyteam to Canada on the A318/A343".

Don´t forget Facebook,
"Markus Klaus Felger", that´s me!.

Comments welcome,
FLIEGER67

Hi Markus,

What a great installment of yours! You managed to catch new registrations, fly with E-jets (I am still virgin on that  ) and get upgraded to Premium AF. One of the perks of being a tier member!

Very well done and looking forward to your Canadian escapade!

Hola Markus!

I see the summer portion of TRs is growing.

Turin is one of those cities I have never been to and I am eager to visiting... sorry you chose the 'Ferragosto'. Most of Southern Europe is closed down that day.... here it is the same.

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
The same rough air like on the inbound leg, very turbulent short after departure, people crying,
the seat belt sign is on for the whole duration of the flight.
Better on a higher level, rough again on finals.

I have experience the worst turbulent flights during the hot summer days... I remember one of those in a clear day at the beginning of August just off BCN once we turned and entered the mainland again the plane was moving up and down like mad... even service was suspended for a while. Approaching MAD was as bad as well... I remember people screaming and the crew talking on the speakers trying to calm them down.

I'd love to catch that series of planes in a row: Embraers and A318 make for a great combination especially if you are upgraded to biz, always a nice touch.

Cheers for sharing another one of your jollies around Europe.

Always great to read about the EJets. I flew my first a few months ago and can't get enough of them, great aircraft to fly on!

Well done on scoring an upgrade. Nice presentation of the food in the box. A nice touch.

The city

http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/I1004/I1004039.jpg

Short to touchdown

Bummer, you missed my house by a question of minutes! But that's a place I use to bike along quite often, I'd do some sight-pointing if you like. The alley stretching from the bottom right hand corner towards left is Corso Mediterraneo, which was one of the biggest urban renovations in Italy and, perhaps, in Europe. Something like 10 years before it was an open-air railway with run-down industrial estates, home for hopeless junkies. Nowadays the railway has gone underground, where it'll be used to host a metro-like public service, making space for trees, bicycles' paths and green areas for dogs' to poo on it (can't change the locals' attitude, no matter how hard you'll try). The squared building across the alley is part of the Politecnico, Turin's Tech institute, one of the best in Italy. it is developing fast, doing a lot of research with firms such as GM and Windows and JAC. upper north you'd see some building areas: one for Turin's first skyscraper, and the other one for the new Porta Susa station.

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
Also here is now a train shuttle service to the City called Dorafly operational, running with ultramodern swiss Stadler railcars to Torina Dora and further by small city buses on a circle route around the city,

Actually that's an Alstom Minuetto made not in Switzerland but in the much less glamorous Savigliano, Cuneo. I'm sorry about your bad adventure with Dora Fly, which is the bus linking Torino Dora with Porta Susa. Unfortunately the line ending in Torino Dora, passing through the airport, can't reach the main railway, which is underground, because no one has the money to link them up, so we're having two railway station at Dora, one of the State railway and another one for GTT, which can't be linked yet. Even Italians get lost in such a mess!

Not enough sleep for me! Know what you mean about the car though, sometimes I think I can hear mine groan when I get it out the garage early in the morning and point it towards the airport

Amusing to read about the unsuccessful self-boarding at FRA. There's a gate where they're trying it at ZRH too, but I can't see it replacing the gate agents just yet.

I like the look of Air Dolomiti, the interior makes for a refreshing change and the terminal building at Turin is pretty impresssive too.

Frankly, this is where AF shorthaul product has collapsed. Catering in C on European flights used to be be very good, well above what you can have in these days on OS/LX. This meal box is ok for Y+, but a disgrace for C really.

Actually, this mealbox reminds me very much what LG serves in Y on its European flights other than those to LCY, CDG, FRA and MUC, and there are a few more items than on AF...

Otherwise, thx a lot for this new TR, very nice to browse

Yes, please do, you won't be disappointed (but avoid the shorter routes which I have mentioned above, as you ll just get a sandwich on these).

The holiday flights (primarily chartered by Luxair Tours, yet also available on a flight-only basis) are even better, with extensive catering service (aperitif+full hot meal+digestive).

Hello Markus,

Very nice report and pictures about your day-trip. I especially liked your pictures of our home airport during your approach on AF.

I have never seen these self-boarding gates in use, so I found it interesting to read about your experience. After that it doesn't seem to be a real improvement - at least on "non-business"-flights with many inexperienced leisure travellers.

with the final destination again Torina Dora, that´s my way to go for some city pix.
Around 6.00 Euro´s for the open daily ticket.

Now that sound like a good offer.

I´am boarding as one of the last pax and surprise, my OLCI paper doesn´t work, the gate agent picks it up and handed me a classic one out.
Seat 4A, upgrade to Premium, well done AF today, that feels perfectly good

Great - nice surprise!

In my AF flights (unless I checked in online) I received a boarding pass cover from the check in agent that gives information about terminal change in CDG. Also the bus service from 2D to the two 2E parts to reach the US flights works great, since you don't have to leave the terminal. 2G however is a joke...
