I am going to admit I am one of the nerds who collect airline memorabilia. Mainly safety cards, but I have expanded my collection to include other things in the past year or so. There are always advertisements for these collectibles shows, and I had wanted to get to the Atlanta show for the past 4 years. Being only 4 hours from Atlanta is nice, but who likes to drive? My other incentive was the Delta dollars I had been given from my trip to Spain on DL in June. I began looking in April at fares, and I’m sorry but $350 to fly from SAV-ATL is ridiculous. Plus, I only had $140 Delta dollars. CHS-ATL was $500 and of course HXD-ATL was about the same. I then thought, what about Brunswick? Yeah, it is a 1 hr 30 min drive, but what the heck? I then read on the BQK website that Delta/ASA is re-evaluating the service to ATL. The fare was $179, which left me to come up with the remaining $39. I had just recently signed up for the Gold Skymiles Amex, and they had a promotion where all flights booked on delta.com would gain you a $50 statement credit. So in the end, I was $11 richer and I had a nice little daytrip to look forward to. My trip to Spain was a blast, wish it could have lasted longer than the month it did!

October came, and Friday, I ended up working until 10PM at my job to cover another person’s shift. Checked-in online and printed my boarding pass, managed to get to bed around 11…….Up at 4:15AM, shower, and into the car by 4:30 for the 1 hour and 30 min drive to BQK. Let me tell you, I-95 in between Savannah and Jacksonville is a joke. Speed limit drops to 65mph and there is GA Highway Patrol EVERYWHERE! I managed to stay around 75mph, and made it to BQK without a hitch. Let me say, Brunswick has a VERY nice little airport! It really would be a shame to see them loose the service to ATL. Parking is FREE, and there were plenty of spaces to choose from. I managed to sleep for about 20-30 mins in the car before going into the terminal. Probably could have left my house at 5, but I didn’t want to chance it.

Aircraft: Bombardier CRJ-200
Depart: 7:40AM Actual: 8:15AM
Arrive: 9:25AM

Load: 50%

Boarding began around 7:25AM or so, and was very leisurely. They did use “Breezeway” boarding for elites and managed to enforce it. The lone jetway in BQK is quite interesting, and slopes upward from ground level. I was welcomed onboard by Constance and made my way to 10A. Now don’t get me wrong, I hate the windows in the CRJ-200 but I really love the aircraft itself. Those GE CF34’s have the best spool up, right next to the PW JT8D’s on the MD-80 series. We pushed back on-time and began taxiing to runway 25. Just short of the runway, the captain came on and said we would be delayed for 20 mins due to ATC holds in Atlanta. After the 20 mins passed, we continued to the runway and began our take-off roll. Climbed to FL240 and Constance came through the cabin with a beverage and snack service. She was very nice and it was evident that she truly enjoyed her job. Visibility was absolutely fantastic, and I enjoyed the views of GA. Shortly thereafter, we began our descent in to ATL and began vectoring for approach to runway 09R. Landing was near perfect as you can see in the video, and we began taxiing to gate C45. Unfortunately just short of the gate, we sat for another 20 mins until we finally parked at 9:25AM. Great flight!

I stopped quickly to get a Cinnabon and some more coffee, and hustled to the MARTA station. Plane to MARTA was about 20 mins I guess? Not bad in my opinion. Now my original plan was to take the train to College Park station and transfer to the Virginia Loop Rd. bus, however the routes changed and I decided to just walk the 2-3 miles. I took a wrong turn and ended up in the projects/ghetto near the airport, thankfully everyone was still sleeping for the most part! It took me about an hour to walk from College Park MARTA station to the Delta museum just in case anyone was interested. I did have a GPS with me as well, which I highly recommend. Entrance fee was $5, now I will let the pictures do the talking.

John Travolta!

There was so much cool stuff here, it was a collector’s dream! I also got one of the last Chick-fil-a lunches for another $5! Really cool museum too, very neat for all the employee’s! After a couple hours, I got tired and began to walk back to College Park station.

I don't think that is a 777 in the picture

The High museum was having the Bank of America free day so I began to head that-a-way. Honestly, MARTA rail really isn’t that bad. I hesitated with the bus though, would rather stick to the rail. The lines at the High were long, but I ended up spending several hours looking around. Certainly not the Louvré, but there are many great exhibits. The Dali exhibit was also there, and that was fantastic! I was walking around snapping a bunch of pics and then realized a guard scolding someone for taking a photo. I quickly put my camera away  .

No thanks, don't think I will!

Eventually I got bored again, and decided to head back to the airport. Got my boarding pass at the kiosk in the MARTA airport station and made my way through security without a hitch. Headed to concourse E and ate at the Chinese place. E is a great place to people watch, and this Saturday evening was no exception. At this point it was only 5:30 or so, and my flight wasn’t until 8:45. I ended up sitting and reading a book for a couple hours while having to listen to a bunch of annoying old ladies going to Lafayette talk about all the tours the have been on/are going on….:-P

Aircraft: Bombardier CRJ-200
Depart: 8:43PM
Arrive: 9:30PM
Seat: 10A
Load: 56%

Boarding began right around 8:30PM and it was the same flight crew from my flight that morning. I don’t remember what runway we taxied to; takeoff was standard CRJ fare for ATL and we turned and headed towards Brunswick. Constance did another beverage/snack service and in no time we began descending into BQK. Approach to runway 07 and landing with a thud and full reverse. The terminal was of course deserted at the late hour save for the few family members waiting. Overall, this daytrip was really a blast. I definitely recommend to those of you who haven’t, go on one. ASA is a great little airline; well their flight crews are anyway. I know they tend to be somewhat delay prone at ATL, but who isn’t? Hope you enjoyed, comments are appreciated.

Was this a DL event?.. The reason I ask is it's the "Atlanta memorabilia show" and there's nothing Eastern at this show?..

Great little TR! Thanks for sharing.

I was in ATL for a conference two weeks ago and the High Museum also had the Dali exhibit. It's a shame I had to pass it up. This TR reminded me that I too should post my DL TR to ATL lol.

Sorry, I believe it may be DL sponsored? Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but there was not just DL stuff. I couldn't fit anymore in the title line!

Yeah, I don't know why they have been sending CRJ's when they could just fill up a Saab or previously an ATR 72. IDK, maybe it doesn't make sense with Mesaba retiring the Saab's soon. They are re-evaluating the service though, i guess we'll see what happens. I would venture to say they will pull out. Sometimes the fares are considerably cheaper than SAV, and it is not as long of a drive as JAX.

I was the volunteer on board Spirit that day! Next time you drop by feel free to take one of the hotel shuttles, then walk the 1/4 mile to the show entrance...it is probably much better than walking through the sketchy part of Atlanta. Great pics! Look forward to seeing you again soon.

I had thought about taking the Renaissance hotel shuttle, but wasn't sure if they'd check to see if I had a reservation or not. I'll definitely try it next time; even though my walking excursion was quite the adventure!

You are one of the few people on here that share this sentiment as do I! It's a combination of a scream and whistle at the same time. To truly appreciate it you have to hear it from outside the cabin. Especially at initial break away power.

Aaaaaaahhh that blows. Yeah you could have def taken one of the area hotel shuttles. The renaissance is actually quite far compared to a few others. Can't remember the name but there is one literally just in front and off to the east of the DL entrance. It takes me about 2 minutes from getting off the shuttle bus to the guard shack at the Delta campus. They really don;t care so no worries. One of them even picks folks up on the way back to the airport. You just tell the security folks at the gate that you need a ride and they;ll call the shuttle for you. Just gotta walk across the street and wait a few minutes.

I really don't think BQK ever saw scheduled ATR service which I found strange too. It was always a CRJ and before that the Brasilias.

I assume you mean by his pics? No? If so, all those pics he took was from inside the Spirit of DL. The road show did in fact have a bunch of stuff from every airline you can think of including Eastern (someone was able to nab first class China for me so I know they had stuff).

Thanks for that trip down memory lane! I used to fly ship 102 all the time! Usually back and forth to FLL/MCO, etc. Yes the Hilton Hotel ATL Airport is almost directly at the entrance of the DL HDQ. I still have not managed to tour the museum yet but really need to go there. And yes you are brave to walk through that part of College Park! I went to school at Woodward Academy two blocks from there and back in the day it was an isolated oasis. I think they are trying really hard to make a comeback and some nice restaurants have opened up in the Tri-Cities (College Park, Hapeville and East Point) and lots of people are moving back! Nice report!

Are you a DL employee or retiree? If not, all you have to do is call the museum the day you want to go and they will get you on the access list.

Happy travels!

Thanks Fly ASA Guy 2005... unfortunately I am way too young to retire. I am an aviation consultant and used to do a lot of work for DL. But thanks for the heads up. I really do want to visit the museum! Just an FYI... I was original Eastern (my first love) but still want to see what the museum has to offer..and even though I was EA I am not THAT old!!!
