Date: Nov 25, 2010
Route: Karachi to Abu Dhabi
Flight: EY 222
Aircraft: Airbus A320
Registration: A6-AIC
Dep: 0520 (Actual 0530)
Arr: 0645 (Actual 0636)
Seat: 21F

The long journey back to Toronto began with me leaving the house at 0130. Very soon we were at the airport by 0220 and after a relatively short check in and customs and immigration I was inside the secure area by 0305. With a lot of time to pass I decided to tour the terminal area with it's little shops. I found this interesting lounge which within the busy area is a haven of quietness and a nice break from the area below. It is accessible to the public though has the ambience of a lounge for Business passengers. I believe Internet connectivity is available as well, as might be in the rest of the departure lounge below.

Runway Lounge at Karachi's International Departure lounge.
(Not affliated with any airline but is operated Gate Gourmet in Karachi)

My breakfast at the lounge prior to boarding my flight.

I went back down to the main departure area only to find my flight boarding. At the door was a tall and friendly Purser who donned the normal dark grey outfit with the exception of the scarf being the only difference! Her bright cheerful eyes and welcoming smile added to the warmth on board the aircraft. The tiny Airbus A320 was half full and as I made my way to the back a cheery South African FA walked up to me to see my boarding card and I said "21" to which he replied "D, E or F" as I indicated with my hand to the starboard side of the aircraft. He waved his hand to 21F as he finally took my card in his hand and welcomed me on board. My excitement grew, this was the Etihad I had known!! He continued down to direct other passengers. His Chinese and Hungarian colleagues however seemed less enthusiastic and just directed passengers to their seats. Like her other European counterparts the Hungarian FA did not smile even once. Luckily we had the cheery South African on board.

We pushed back a bit late and made our way to Rwy 25R at Karachi airport. We passed the other Middle Eastern competitors at the gate, which included Qatar Airways, Emirates and Oman Air. Gulf Air had not arrived as yet. Before long we rolled down the runway and took to the air over Karachi. Unlike other flights which bank to the left and continue down to the Arabian Sea before turning right heading up to the Karachi port and the Makran coast before turing left again and then heading West to the Middle East, our jet took a straight route over the city where we passed over the Habib Bank plaza which was at one time the tallest building in Karachi! We were soon over the Arabian Sea and were heading towards our destination of Abu Dhabi.

The FAs kicked into action and the breakfast service began. There was no trolley service just the trays handed out individually as there was only one meal option available due to the short flight of a little over two hours to Abu Dhabi. My cheery South African FA handed me my meal with a fantastic smile and wished me to enjoy my meal. However something unusual happened the row up to me and some rows ahead of me got their meals while others waited. I had nearly finished my meal when those who were waiting had their meals served to them. No idea why this happened.

Soon we began our descent into Abu Dhabi and were soon landing on Rwy 13R! We were to descend by the stairs and I got excited with the thought of photographing the planes yet remained cautious as photographing aircraft is not allowed. I quickly and discreetly clicked a shot while getting down.

Once on the bus I thought it would be safe to click a pic

I got told off by the security in the blue jacket to put the camera away

Once the doors closed as we moved I got a couple of other pics

I spent the time while at Abu Dhabi to spot through the large glass windows. What magnificient sunshine and large windows to take your photos to a whole new level. Here are some of the pics

Date: Nov 25, 2010
Route: Abu Dhabi to Toronto
Flight: EY 141
Aircraft: Boeing 777-300ER
Registration: A6-ETF
Dep: 1020 (Actual 1315)
Arr: 1535 (Actual 1740)
Seat: 51A

After spending a few hours litterally spotting through the large gorgeous windows at Abu Dhabi airport I learnt that my flight was now delayed from 1020 to 1315. I was lucky due to this delay I could photograph the Grand Prix formula one aircraft left around 1040 that day.

Back at the gate we got prepared to board our aircraft. A large Punjabi family was in the line ahead of me and as we got to the door they handed out all six boarding passes to the Purser at the gate. She was very senior compared to the other Etihad FAs I had come across but her year's of experience showed immediately as she addressed the entire family by their last name welcoming the whole family on board. I almost felt relieved like unlike my last flight this one was going to be good. With that warm welcome extending down to me on board, it continued for all the rest in the line. I passed other FAs on the way who warmly smiled and had to say excuse me to two others near the galley who happily chatted instead of welcoming me board lol. I got to 51A and then progressed to continue photographing and taking advantage of the warm Middle Eastern sunlight!

My ride to Toronto

Walking down the air bridge I tried to get some shots.

Views from the aircraft

While taxing out the Purser came on the air and explained the reason our flight to Toronto and the flight to New York had been delayed due to the late arrival of the Boeing 777-300ERs from Jeddah. She profusely apologised for the delay and said she and her crew would do their best to make up for the delay in ensuring our flight was going to be a comfortable one. It was nice of her to take the time to explain the delay. I would have assumed the captain would have done that.

After a very long taxi and a three hour delay we thundered down Runway 31R and climbed on our 13 hour 30 minute journey to Toronto. We passed the following on the way

The flight data on the flight was unavailable. This was the case on my flight with Etihad some years ago back to Toronto.

Menu card for today's flight

Shish Tawook dinner on board. The only option left and the cost of sitting in the last few seats on the plane.

Etihad's unique dessert service. Again not dissapointed!

The crew on this flight was mainly made of Asian FA's who could have easily been mistaken for Eva Air FAs had their uniforms been dark green instead lol. The other mix was of Middle Eastern and Kenyan nationals. Of particular interest was a Middle Eastern FA who served my area and smiled warmly at each passenger. She attended to calls and if stopped in the ailse for requests attended to them by returning with the request in no time. When she had come by to collect our trays the guy in 51B was still having his meal so she apologised for trying to take it, and assumed I was having my meal too. When the dessert service rolled by she noticed our trays still not collected so she took them to the back and then continued with the dessert service. A woman with three kids were in the 3 seats configuration in front of my 2 seat configuration, and she took a little extra time with them even taking time to ask the little boy what his options were, and not just leaving it to the mother to decide for him. The other FAs too took care of all the request as well, but this FA was clearly the best of them all. Fortunately no dragons encountered on any of the other EY flights.

Gradual change in the scenery outside as we progressed.

Over Eastern Canada. You could tell my the chill near the window lol

The usual mid-flight snack, chocolate popcorn and ice cream was served but I didn't take any pics

The last meal served prior to landing in Toronto.

We made it back to Toronto and landed on Rwy 06L on a windy evening. We taxied and soon parked near the regular evening traffic.

Very nice report; I enjoyed reading it and great pictures!

One question. Is the "Runway Lounge" a Ethiad lounge or is it a paid for experience?

Hi BA286

Thanks for reading the report. I just edited the report that the Runway lounge is not affiliated with any airline. It is a paid for experience.

Looks like things have improved since last time I used the 'CIP Lounge' in KHI. It was very dated and basic. The lounge you used looked much better.

Thanks for both reports.

Excellent report. I did not see any EY report for a while.

AUH is great for spotting. Strange that you are not allowed to take pictures on the tarmac.

Nice to know that you were well taken care of by the FA's. The Middle Eastern and South African FA's are truly gems.

The meal looks yummy. I did not know EY would serve espresso or cappuccino as well in Y. Good job on this one, EY!

The A320's. Aren't they gorgeous in EY livery?

Thanks for sharing.

Cheers,

Excellent report and I am glad your return flight seemed to work out better.

I think it is always a bit difficult for these major Middle Eastern airlines (QR/EK/EY) to work with a multi-national crew, which comes from different cultural background and even has a very difficult view of the nature of being a flight attendant.

I agree with others that the separate dessert service in economy class is really nice and a nice feature.

The amenity kit looks above average, compared to other Y amenity kits! (Of course amenity kits in Y class are getting rarer!)

Thanks for clarifying! I must say that it appears a lovely lounge, much nicer that any of the "paid-for" lounges I have encountered.

I am saddened at the lack of these types of lounges at key locations - London Heathrow's terminal 5 for example. My budget does not allow for business class travel (forget about First), however I am more than happy to dish out the cash for a "paid-for experiene" lounge. They make all the difference whilst waiting for that connecting flight 5 hours down the road...

Happy Holidays

I thought the entire dessert service seperated from the main meal service, is a brilliant idea! It just adds that little extra when compared to eating your dessert directly from the tray and the FA coming around to serve you coffee in the little cup already present on it lol

The Runway lounge is freely accessible to the public from the departure lounge via the stairs shown in the photograph. The only views available of the runway & aircraft are from the departure lounge itself, not from the Runway lounge as it has no windows. But It's got a huge dome roof which makes it very cathedral like and makes up for the lack of windows, and gives one a sense of getting away from it all. You must certainly try it out, and the prices seem very reasonable.

Posted this is the other thread by mistake    (Never write about your report until the jet lag has eased off lol)

I forgot to mention that when I got to the gate to find out more details about the delayed flight, the Etihad ground staff offered each passenger a food voucher due to the 3 hour delay, (Which I later found out was worth AED 32 when I asked at the store what I could get), to be redeemed at any of the shops in the upper level food court in the airport. It was nice of Etihad to provide that.

However once you got to say Burger King, you were told which of the fixed menu options were available, not just select anything worth AED32. For instance option 1 with drink and fries, and not say two Chicken tender only options. And another Shawrma place only offered their breakfast option (Sausage, scrambled eggs, noddles), I finally settled for a Chicken Tikka/Pesto sandwhich worth AED 28 at a bistro place, and was also given a Diet Coke (Diet Light) drink to finish my meal.

The a la carte menu style goes really well in the premium cabins, but i think it's a little silly for Y.
Nothing too 'a la carte' about the last meal service as there wasn't anything to choose from haha

Hi Suryo!

AUH has some good spotting opportunities at Terminal 3 due to the large windows (but you will mainly see Etihad from there). However, Terminals 1 and 2 do not provide the same facility unfortunately.

Thanks a lot for sharing flightsim!

That was because the JFK 773ER had also been used on the Jeddah sector    . She said both 773ERs were late coming in from Jeddah (I thought Etihad used the Airbus A340-500s or -600s on that route). Maybe due to the Eid rush they had increased the flights that day.

Thanks for a great report, with some fascinating pictures. Especially of the F1 circuit from the air! Beautiful. The F1 logojet looks so much better in the sun, than when I took a pic at a rainy Heathrow! And a cool design for the control tower too. I have to agree with Planehunter - didn't think the meals were anything too special. BTW, whats up with no pictures of KHI?! I was really looking forward to seeing them - and the new lounge is definitely so much nicer than the CIP one I used when I lived in Pakistan.
