I N T R O D U C T I O N

Hello everyone and welcome to my latest trip report. My sister and I had been thinking of planning a family vacation trip for thanksgiving. We were going to surprise our parents, thus we just asked them to request the Monday after thanksgiving off. They asked why and we just replied by saying, "we will do something". That was a good enough excuse for them, as we really hardly travel as a family. This was about 4-5 months ago and we started looking for tickets. The original plan was to head over to Puerto Rico and enjoy some of the beautiful sun instead of the cold times in Ohio. Alas, during a conversation, we dropped a hint and asked dad about a beach and he coldly said he would get bored over there. My sister and I had some thinking to do. After careful deliberation, we decided that the wine country tour of CA would probably be the best bet. Mom and dad both like wine, and this would be a great opportunity for them to try out various kinds. It was easy booking the hotels etc. but finding flights was a pain. I couldn't find anything below $500 for the thanksgiving weekend on the usual websites. Checking ITASoftware's website I was able to find Midwest/Frontier for $224. Went to Frontier.com and could not replicate the fare; however I then thought of trying out midwestairlines.com and boom, was able to book 4 tickets for $224 each. I'm guessing I was probably one of the LAST people to book on midwest's website because a day before departure, I tried checking in online and the website kept re-directing me to frontier.com which could not find my reservation.

Now, we were on an EMB 190 going to SFO via MCI. The flights itself were very basic. Going to SFO, our flight was to depart in the morning at 7 am and get us to SFO at 11:45 am. Our stopover was in MCI and we would not have to change planes. It was a published direct flight however it was not non-stop. The load to MCI was quite light. In fact the FA asked if they could have two volunteers. My sister and I volunteerd and we were moved up to 4EF. I slept most of the flight but when I woke up, I found that my parents were in 1EF. The only in flight service was a drink service and a buy-on-board service. Since I slept most of the flight I could experience neither.

Kansas City's airport is such a small crowded airport. I would say it's probably the worst airport experience. If you guys think Y is packing you like sardines, this airport literally feels like that. There is no food place. There were only 2 small stalls where you could buy water, nuts etc. But from the secure gate area, you could actually see the road. I personally thing it is a very poorly planned airport. Right in front of the gate, you can see the security. Just horrible experience.

Can see the road I was talking about

My flight to SFO left just before 10 am kansas city time. Flight load was full for this flight. It was completely full. We were back in our original seats of 17A-F. Again the service was a drink service followed by a buy-on-board. By the time the cart got to me, the sandwich was over. My dad ended up getting some chex mix which he said was really good. Reading Frontier's magazine, it suggested that they retained Midwest's tradition of serving chocolate chip cookies. I thought I would get to have them, but alas since our flight left before 10 am, we did not. Our flight was greeted with spectacular views of the Rockies and the pilot was very kind to let everyone know when were passing over some famous ski resorts. Unfortunately I was on the right side and most of the ski resorts the pilot mentioned were appearing on the left. But a nice gesture from the pilot...

Over the next 4 days, we roamed around San Francisco, looking at the sights and then heading north to Sonoma / Napa to enjoy some wine tasting.

Continued from above...

So our time in SFO was up and it was time to head back. Our flight was to depart from SFO around noon and get us into CMH by 9:30 pm. The routing again was SFO-MCI-CMH; although this time we were to change planes in MCI. The flights were just about the same as coming in. I had to check in the wine bottles that I had accumulated in Napa. I had a box and I paid $20 to check my bags in.

Since the flight was super full, we were offered to check our bags at the gate for free. So we all checked our bags in and wouldn't have to worry about any of the bags inside the plane. This flight was completely full and we were given option of buying the extra legroom seats for $50 each. Meaning we would pay $200, we passed on it. The pilot seemed to be a goofball as he introduced himself as Captain America, who was accompanied by Flight Attendent Storm and Wonder Woman. The First Officer was nicknamed Captain America's first officer. A nice chuckle before the flight took off

Since these flights departed after 10 am, we were given the cookies this time. They were not freshley baked (as advertised in their magazine). In fact they were cold; however they were still soft. The flight was pretty unventful and the only service on board was the drink service along with the buy-on board service.

Overall it was a great family trip. I cannot fault Midwest / Frontier in anyways. They were efficient and gave typical service on a domestic carrier. I wouldn't mind travelign them again

Thanks for reading my report. Hope you enjoyed it. Questions / Comments / Concerns are Welcome

Cheers & Go Bucks

Nice pictures! Sounds like a lot of fun. And I enjoy seeing my current home airport, Kansas City, on a trip report...so few of them out there!

Yes, but I dare you to find a better O&D airport of that size in the USA. You won't find one. I can get from the aircraft door to the Parking Spot bus in 30 seconds.

I have never flown them but the new Frontier seems to be at the bottom of the totem pole....it's shame considering what YX used to be...

Yea that is from the days of easy security and O/D was all there was to worry about. It really is great for O/D get there and walk to your gate in 2mins. If you leave the security area there are shops, places to eat etc.. It is just they need to keep the passengers in this small area now with increased security etc.. Not the best design anymore.

Pictures are not bad for an i-phone. Good report.

buck3y3nut - I very much enjoyed your latest trip report. Some interesting effects with your pics as well. Great scenes on your MCI-SFO sector. Shame that the airport (MCI) is so crowded. I've read that the airport design has for years been a problem as it was constructed at a time of smaller volumes of passengers, and moreover when flying wasn't the target of terrorists! I had thought the airport authority there was looking at substantial changes and renovations to improve the experience. Thanks for posting! P/jet

There has been a lot of talk around Kansas City for years about making a big "normal" terminal, but that is a long, long way off, if ever. For now, nothing will change anytime soon.

They have improved some stuff. For example, when I moved to Kansas City in 2002, there were zero (zip, zilch, nada) restrooms after security. Now, there are...the little things

So yes, connections are terrible there most time (though not always...sometimes, it's very very very easy, if you get lucky with gates), but as an O&D airport, it's absolutely fantastic, and I cannot say enough good things about it.

Nice TR. What's with the video screens on the bulkhead of your shot from the CMH-MCI flight? Are the E190s going to get some form of IFE/AVOD to be more like the F9 Airbus metal?

Thank you. It was a very nice trip with family. I guess after a long long time we took a family vacation. San Francisco was a blast along with the wineries.

I had never flow Frontier or Midwest before this flight. Seems to me they were OK. At least the flights were on time.

Thank you for the kind words. I'm glad you liked the report. I guess they had what they called "stretch" seating. The leg room in row 4 was considerably better than in row 17. On our way back, the same seats were offered to us, but at a premium.

Thank you for the kind words. I'm glad you enjoyed the report. The pictures were taken using an application called Hipstamatic. It's quite nifty as it creates these effects.

I have no idea what the plan is. I do know that these screens were not functional. They weren't even turned on. So I'm not sure if they will be getting F9's IFE/AVOD. Don't they have something similar to JetBlue as in live Dish TV?
