Sardinia domestic on the MD82/83

http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/I1006/I1006091.jpg

Ciao, dear readers,

anyone here remember that terrible vulcanic ash cloud situation in April?.
A trip to Sardinia was scheduled but impossible.
Anyway Sardinia is nevertheless interesting, so building a trip around the POS Sardinia domestic routing OLB-CAG is the thing to do.
Some mixed emotions here. Why?.
Five legs to go, leg 1 seems ok.
Leg 2 is retimed, a mail from the airline informed me, no serious problem for the rest of the day.
During preparations around one week prior to the flights I notice that leg 3 is cancelled, no info from the airline.
Some cell phone action shows me that I´am rebooked to the next flight, two hours later, to late for my original booked leg´s 4 and 5. The promised rebooking confirmation never arrived, but I found a new solution for legs 4 and 5.
Finally leg 2 and 3 are not open for OLCI, both time an error response.
Well, anyway let´s go to Italy, the country which I really like. It´s also the home of the airline for leg 2 and 3
or maybe the young guy prior to me at security with a expensive looking Rolex watch at the left wrist. Now, that´s nothing really special, but when there is the same watch also at the right wrist, that´s something more interesting!.

Well, that´s the link for my latest story "A la francais"

Toulouse And "Vol Annule" On Regional (by FLIEGER67 Jan 15 2011 in Trip Reports)

And that´s the way to go:

Service airberlin AB 8942 operated by TuiFly
Scheduled: 06.00 // 07.55

What about my promise to be earlier at the airport?.
Boarding for the first flight of the day is printed for 05.15 am.
The cell phone calls me at 03.00 am, on the way at 04.00 am and in the terminal at 05.00 am, early enough?.
OLCI works properly with AB´s website, secured the last row window as usual, 25F this time.
Booking is done via AB directly, the cheapest fare, my AB credit card helps to calm the fees down, the fare 40.00 Euro´s.
That´s the way to T4
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/I1006/I1006001.jpg
A good number of touristic nightflights coming in

The screen with my flight, it looks like Antalya is the favourite today
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/I1006/I1006002.jpg
A thousand of vacationeers at T3 security and simply more staff than clients at T1, sure ok for me today.
My gate 331 closer to boarding time, where are the passengers?
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/I1006/I1006004.jpg
It´s a bus gate, boarding starts at around 5.30 am,
there is the one and only bus driving around the apron with a total of 14 pax, less than a 10% load this early Sunday morning.
Mostly italians on travel.
D-AHXC is on the apron, the scheduled 737-700. In service since 09.05.2007 with TuiFly and nowadays operating for airberlin.
X3 operates 10 planes on type actually.
My third flight with her and leg no. 30 on the 700 series
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/I1006/I1006005.jpg
Departure from runway 25 at 06.05 am, close to ontime, it´s partly cloudy with 7 degrees this morning.
1 hour 40 minutes to Sardinia.
There are three FA´s on this service, one ok middle aged male, he told me when we talked about the low load, that the return service is fully booked, seems strange, such load differences.
He works together with a middle aged ok female purser and a very good looking but somewhat cold young girl, all from Germany.
Cockpit crew is also from Germany. The captain with a short welcome while waiting for takeoff clearance at the runway entrance.
The safety card
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/I1006/I1006009.jpg
The empty and dark cabin, I decide for the second last row, 24F in the end.
Dark grey leather seats, clean, legroom ok. Recline is possible and the safety demo is on the screens
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/I1006/I1006011.jpg
Muffin and coffee, ok for me
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/I1006/I1006012.jpg
The FO and PF is on the mike inflight with detailed infos in a relaxed style.
Routing is via Innsbruck-Verona-Bologna-Firenze and Rome at 37000 feet.
Strong sidewind above the alps, very shaky for some 30 minutes, clouds, no views the most time.
The sunbeam hits the winglet
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/I1006/I1006013.jpg
The captain is on the mike again during approach with further informations. First arrivals runway is 06, that means some minutes more to circle, but finally changed to a straight in for 24.

Service IG 1332 operated by Meridiana
Scheduled: 11.45 // 12.25

Olbia is a new entry to my log, also the city is new to me.
So, the first idea is to go downtown but soon after arrival it starts to rain, a no go for me this time.
The very first thing now with that OLCI error is to locate the Meridiana check-in desks, no self service kiosks available.
Lucky me, a very nice elderly female finished her work from an earlier IG service.
At first she responds that it is to early to check-in, but finally no luggage helps, she walked around the corner to the IG office, back to me and checked me in. On the classic paper is seat 20A, the two seater on the MD.
The OLCI feature is a joke, security sequence no. 1 for me.
Booking is done via IG directly, the fare 50.00 Euro´s.
The IG counters from above

A view into the terminal, looks like not that really up to date, but clean and spacious so far

No one around at security, the right time for me and soon thereafter in the gate area.
Lots of comfortable seaters with good views to the apron

It´s interesting to watch the people at the gate.
Mostly, if not all italian passengers, a lot of elder travellers like these whitehaired couple with no less than seven cabin bags at the gate, impressive what you need all to carry with you when travelling from north to south Sardinia.
Some businessmen and a good number of staff, mainly IG but also AZ.
Local products from Sardinia

Service IG 1471 operated by Meridiana
Scheduled: 16.30 // 17.40

Lucky me again, one IG desk open, no passengers all
around.
At first, the nice female agent is somewhat confused with my booking, originally IG 1491 scheduled 2.00 pm- 3.10 pm,
cancelled and rebooked for this service.
No bags helps again and my boarding pass is printed,
seat 30 A, the last two seater window ahead to the rear galley and the emergency exit.
Booking is also done via IG directly, the fare 80.00 Euro´s.
Another experience with this company shows me, that
there is one phone number for esternal calls, but there are mostly italian speaking agents there.
During contact with the german Meridiana sales agent,
the female agent there follows the rebooking but can´t confirm it, she also agrees with the non english speaking staff in Italy, also a problem there and she shows me another phone number.
Well, six to seven tries till a female agent speaks english,
like earlier mentioned, she confirms the rebooking, but no mail at all. No problem in the end.
The airport and city is still in my log, i decide to stay here, walk around the airport and follow the action.
The terminal, palm trees around
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/I1006/I1006073.jpg
A really large building here
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/I1006/I1006074.jpg
Nice palm tree detail
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/I1006/I1006076.jpg
This is a spacious and roomy building
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/I1006/I1006077.jpg
My plane from the inbound leg sits on the apron.
The next IG departure is my flight and there is no earlier inbound. As far as I like the MD, I need a new registration
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/I1006/I1006078.jpg

http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/I1006/I1006081.jpg
VW presents the new Passat to its dealers and chartered a number of planes to fly all the people in and out every day around these weekend.

http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/I1006/I1006085.jpg

Service LH 239 operated by Lufthansa
Scheduled: 19.20 // 21.20

Originally booked is
FCO-MUC-STR-ZRH-FCO
with the first departure at 5.30 pm.
You know, I´am to late for that, so I´ve cancelled the booking completely.
Thanx to my well loaded Miles and More account and also a nice 15000 miles offer I´ve booked
FCO-FRA-STR-ZRH-FCO again fitting to my later arrival.
15000 miles more to pay the taxes and so my credit card account wins this time with the repayed taxes and fees from the first booking.
OLCI works properly with LH´s website,
36F, the last row window and hopefully some comfort for me.
Biz upgrade is available for only 10000 miles, but the
southern german sense stopped me from booking that thing.
No extra security, time for some fashionable pix tries.
No chance to spot any plane from the D gates, so that´s the way to spend some time
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/I1006/I1006116.jpg
Everything looks like ok for FRA from gate D09
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/I1006/I1006117.jpg
This is a really run down place, dirty restrooms, closed shops, oldfashioned and not well maintained
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/I1006/I1006121.jpg
The only thing to notice from the upper level is a LH tail
close to my gate, so it´s not LH´s fault if something goes wrong.
Boarding is printed for 6.50 pm, but beside a huge number of pax around no action at all.
People walking up and down the terminal with numerous gate changes, not that really nice for less frequent travellers here.
Finally boarding is called, according to the sheet pinned inside at the planes door I´am entering
D-AISV, the scheduled A321 "Bingen", a new registration, leg no. 18 on type. In service with LH since 30.09.2009 and one of 43 examples in the actual fleet.
The safety card
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/I1006/I1006123.jpg
The cabin fitted with bright grey leather seats, clean, legroom and recline in the last row ok.
The safety demo is manual.
I am not amused while boarding as the last pax and talking with the nice purser at the planes door till the other pax walked further.
The load is 100%, all three seats in my row taken
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/I1006/I1006124.jpg
Cockpit crew is from Germany, the captain with a detailed welcome during boarding.
Pretty slow ground handling here at FCO and we need to wait some more minutes till it´s fixed.
Departure from the 3900 meters runway 16R, it is 7.50 pm, 30 minutes late,
16 degrees, cloudy and very windy here in Rome.
1 hour, 25 minutes for FRA.
Cabin crew is one young nice male and three females,
one younger, two middle aged, all nice and ok.
Service is a sandwich together with a chocolate bar and free drinks.
The FO is on the mike inflight with detailed inflight informations but no flightlevel information.
The route is VCE-INN-MUC with strong wind and therefore some turbulences above the alps like in the morning.
Well, that was heavy, shaky right after departure, ok for some 20 minutes and from one second to the other,
everything is calm, the FA´s working the service,
the plane jumps up and down lile a punchball, service is stopped for some 15 minutes, but the seatbelt sign is on along the whole flight.
It´s nearly impossible to read neither to write something.
What´s this, any idea?
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/I1006/I1006127.jpg
Flying along FRA airport southern side with the runway lights of 18 and a departing plane.
Touchdown at the 4000 meters runway 07R, it is 9.35 pm, 15 minutes late, 10 degrees and partly cloudy here.
The captain is at the planes door during disembarking, a nice gesture.
The screen confirms D-AISV
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/I1006/I1006128.jpg
On block at 09.40 pm, exactly ten minutes till boarding for the next flight and finger deboarding at A26.
A good way to walk till A02 like on my paper.

Service Lufthansa LH 136 operated by Lufthansa CityLine
Scheduled: 22.20 // 23.00

The original MUC connection sees more time between inbound and final outbound leg.
MUC is less covered here in comparison to FRA and my Frequent Traveller status grants me lounge access but not this time, at least not at MUC.
And with these very short connection here finally also not at FRA.
The screen shows D-ACPJ for STR
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/I1006/I1006129.jpg
Well, some pictures, the usual restroom visit before boarding a plane and it looks like I´am one of the last pax at the gate. Fiveteen minutes from onblock at A26 till boarding from A02, not a minute lost here.
By bus around the apron to check my plane

http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/I1006/I1006133.jpg
In service with LH CityLine since 18.07.2002.
One of 20 in the actual fleet.
Leg no. 6 on type, some 250 legs since the last flight on, what a coincidence exactly the same plane, the second flight here with this machine

Boarding
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/I1006/I1006135.jpg
OLCI is done for 18F, the aisle is taken, but boarding late together with a LH FO helps, row 12 is completely open, he´s doing 12A and me 12F.
Departure from the 4000 meters runway 18, it is 10.25 pm, close to ontime, 10 degrees, partly cloudy, the duration for STR is 20 minutes only.
The safety card
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/I1006/I1006137.jpg
Two middle aged female FA´s, well, business friendly here.
The cabin fitted with bright grey leather seats, no recline, somewhat worn out, well used and less comfortable.
The safety demo is manual
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/I1006/I1006138.jpg
Cockpit crew is from Germany, the captain with a friendly welcome during boarding.
No service, route or flightlevel information.
Final touchdown at STR´s runway 07, it is 10.50 pm, ten minutes ahead to schedule,
also here partly cloudy and ten degrees.

No question, the winner of the day is Meridiana with the MD´s.
I love these apron boardings and disembarkings through the rear door, real nice.

Not that long to go for the next story:
"Three lounges and the classic green MD".

Hi Markus!

thanks for the great Italian trip. Nice to score a few mad dogs. I like the Meridiana livery also. Shame we only get their A319's in AMS, but for how long? I think IG will stop their flights to AMS soon since KL stopped the codeshare agreement.

Leg no. 10 on the 83 and a new registration.

Sure? The aircraft engine shows it's a MD82   Maybe IG is wrong though.

I was offered a 10000 miles upgrade also once already but didn't take it either on LH. It's better to save for a longhaul someday. And these CRJ700s, very comfortable machines, but it seems I'm flying them more often then you do

Have a nice weekend,
Eric

Hi Markus,

You're really pampering me with this MD-82/83 report. One of the most beautiful plane ever built. Nice to know that you secured two new registrations on the round trip.

I would love to fly an MD-80 but only on out of or into a particular city, Semarang, my birthplace. The problem is, the only Indonesian MD operator Lion Air does not have any fixed schedule with MD-80.

Anyway, thanks a lot for sharing and looking much forward to your green MD adventure.

very nice TR and also a pretty good schedule for a daytrip.
Luckily everything went as it should be.
Nice that you showed us Meridiana, a carrier which isnt covered in TRs at all.
The AB and LH flights just looked good as usual.
Thank you for sharing

Hi Markus,

Great Report, You're definitely churning these reports out pretty quickly. Meridiana sounds like a decent carrier while AB & LH are consistent as usual.

The MD-80 is a very nice plane though unfortunately they're pretty much non-existent down under. I hope i can log one sometime, I guess my best bet is in America with DL or AA.

Hi, once again an excellent report.
I travelled to Olbia a dozen times when TUIfly used to fly there when doing their own business. While prices for flights and hotels are out of range in the sommer, it's an excellent weekend getaway for the winter, with sun (usually   ), lot of nature, beaches, nice sceneries and good food. TUIfly had this marketing agreement with Sardinia and flew there like from 5 or so airports every weekend, with only a couple of passengers on board. Usually load was never over 20 passengers, sometimes even much less. My last flight there was a Olbia-Munich, when AB already had took over the business. And the flight was extremely full, most people having connecting flights from Munich to everywhere with AB. This definitely makes a huge difference! AB was able to fill the flight (and probably did even charge much more than X3 did, I never paid more than 30 EUR for their flights to Olbia, once it was even only 6 EUR!) thanks to their connecting flights.

But obviously your early morning flight from STR was not good for transferring in STR

I like Olbia airport a lot. It's a clean and modern place, lot of sun and huge windows... The ground handling company of AB, which is actually the airport itself, is great. Once I wanted to collect miles on a special offer with X3 -> Flying to Olbia and back 30 minutes later on the same flight. Since check in was closing 45 minutes ahead and no online check in possible I wrote them an email and a lovely lady wrote back she will pre check in me and I shall ask for her at the gate once I debark the arriving plane to give me my boarding pass. And the lady was there and she had my boarding pass, sequence number 1, ready. Great people there.

So much nice flying souvenirs for me...

HI Markus,

Another nice day trip to Italy. Glad it all worked out with you, sounds like you had your fair share of pre-trip changes and cancellations. Great that there are still plenty of these lovely Mad Dogs around, especially Italy and The Nordics  .

And yes, the back stairs are usually the way to go unless you are sitting up front...

I'm still missing Meridiana, was supposed to fly them last year but that flight turned out to be operated by Eurofly, which was okay as it is a rarer carrier...

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
A thousand of vacationeers at T3 security and simply more staff than clients at T1, sure ok for me today.

I liked when you were still able to do this at HEL. Before the T1/T2 split there were three departure halls in the international terminal each with their own security setup feeding a common airside area. Usually it was never busy on all three of them at one time, so if you had some queues and knew the system you could just go to another one. Nowadays it's more difficult as there still are two checkpoints in T2 but those are quite far apart.

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
there is the one and only bus driving around the apron with a total of 14 pax, less than a 10% load this early Sunday morning.

Wow, that's bad. The season seems to be over.

Hello Markus,

another great report, I absolutely love the MD-8x and I think they even look better with the kind of old fashioned Meridiana livery with the cheatline, it fits them really well.

Disembarking by the rear stairs, I love it

Always great to do so.

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Reply 1):
Looks nice

Agree.

For me it is one of the best ways to fly, in the back of the MD-80s with the engine noise and since most people prefer not to sit there it is usually empty.

MD heaven, five active planes on the apron and at the gates

I personally am not that much of a fan of Italy, but it is for sure a very interesting country aviation wise. And with a lot of different airlines, prices are usually pleasantly low. So well worth a visit

Not that long to go for the next story:
"Three lounges and the classic green MD".

Looking forward to your next story.

Thanx again and it looks definitely retro style with this livery.
