Hello!

Welcome to my TR! This time I´m headed for Düsseldorf, Germany were a friend of mine lives. I started planning in early December to visit him and looking for available flights. I find two options of directflights from ARN to DUS. Lufthansa op by Eurowings on the CRJ200 and SK on the 737-600. Actually it´s a third "option" also, flying from Stockholm-Skavsta to Düsseldorf-Weeze on FR but that was not too tempting

Anyway I decided quickly to catch LH since I had never flew on the CRJ200 before and that´s a A/C I wanted to fly with for long. Unlike the rest of the A-netters I dont find the 737-600 a rare A/C,I have quit many -600 flight´s in my log, mostly on SK.

I booked quickly afraid of raising fares and I ended up paying 1800SEK(170Euro) for my return ticket which is quit cheap for being LH and a typical Business route.

The route:

The date for my outbound flight was the 24th of January and I traveled by train the day before to Stockholm to visit some relatives living there. Rather late in the evning I took the Arlanda express train to the airport and stayed the night on one of the airport hotels.

The 24th of January 2011 Outbound flight:

My flight departed in early afternoon so I didn´t have to get up early which is always nice. I actually stayed in my room untill 12.00. Took the shuttlebus to terminal 5 which was done in five minutes arriving in the terminal at 14.15.
Check-in with self-service machine, and choose seat 11F, a window seat just behind the wing.

Terminal 5:

Before heading for security I had some lunch in Skycity between terminal 4 and 5. Of course I chosed a restaurant with some spotting-opportunities

Delta´s 757 to JFK:

Traffic was quit low at this time and I decided to go to security which was done in no time.

I took a glass of wine and a smoke in one of the bars and then walked to my gate, 05B.
No A/C at the gate get, some 30 min before departure so I took some coffee on Starbucks just next to the gate and sat down and waited for my A/C to arrive.
Just five minutes late it arrived from DUS:

My A/C, D-ACRI:

I went to the smoking area for one last smoke before boarding and arrived at the gate around 10 min before annonced boarding-time. I could see the gate from the smoking-area and there was around 15 pax there waiting. I thought it will be a light load today but after a while more and more started to show up and finally when I return from my smoke there was 39 pax there, 40 with me included so a good load on today's flight.

Finally five minutes after announced boarding time they started boarding. The A/C was not connected to the gate so we had to use the stairs down to the tarmac and then a short walk to our A/C:

Flight details:
ARN-DUS
Flight:LH2923 op by Eurowings
Dep time: 15.10
Arr time: 17.10
Load 40 of 48

The seat next to me remained free but when everyone was seated the ramp-agent step onboard started to talk with a guy seated in the front. After some discussion he stand up and walked back taking the seat next to me! Really don't know why!

Two female F/A´s onboard, both in their mid 30´s. One very friendly and one less friendly:D

Soon the door was closed and the F/A´s started the safetydemo. No recorded one here on EW. One of the F/A's demonstrates and the other one reads the instructions over the PA. In the meanwhile the engines was started and we started our taxi.

We took off ten minutes late, at 15.10 from runway 19R in a southernly direction. Shortly after a slight turn to the west towards DUS.
Shortly after take-off:

A couple of minutes into flight the setbelt-sign was turned off and the F/A's started their service. It took some time for them to reach us in the back. We were served some sort of warm bread-roll filled with cheese and herbs. Quit tasty but very small  With this I took a glass of white wine and coffe. We also get a second-round of drinks later on in-flight. What impressed me on LH is that if you want beer you get a large glass-bottle and not a little can http://i669.photobucket.com/albums/vv57/parton87/Dusseldorf/P1010599800x600.jpg

http://i669.photobucket.com/albums/vv57/parton87/Dusseldorf/P1010600800x600.jpg

When in cruise the elderly female Captain came over the PA and welcomed us onboard. I din´t recall our crusing-altitude or speed but the routing was as follows:Stockholm, Norrköping, Jönköping, Copenhagen, Hamburg, Dortmund, Düsseldorf.

After the service finished I visited the lavatory which was suprisely big on this little CRJ. Even bigger than on the larger jets like the 737 and A320.

There was no views on the ground until just a few seconds before touch-down but I was unable to take any pictures since my seatmate was leaned over me to see out. get a window-seat next time mate!

We landed at 17.10 on DUS runway 05L after two hours in-flight. After that a very long taxi to a remote stand. A fellow pax sitting in front of me with a very bad humor sad loudy to his seatmate that we probaly landed in Berlin and was now driving on the autobahn (highway) to Düsseldorf!  http://i669.photobucket.com/albums/vv57/parton87/Dusseldorf/P1010632800x600.jpg

After a quit long taxing it was time for a long busride across the airport to the arrival-hall.
I recived my bags in 5 min and meet up with my friend.

Continued from above

Hello again!

Four days in Düsseldorf quickly passed and it was time to go home!

The 28th of January 2011 Inbound-flight:

My flight departed DUS at 12.10 and I arrived at the airport around two hours before departure time. I tried to check-in in the machines but the machine refuses to accept my SK Eurobonus-card so I had to call for a agent to help me. We make a attempt on a another machine and this time it worked. I chosed seat 14A. A right window-seat on the last row.

Arriving at the airport:

AB ad:

I went directly to security which took some time with two LH A330-300 departures to the US in the same time as my flight.

When inside the gate-area I ate breakfast in a restaurant and did some spotting:

After my breakfast I had a smoke and then walked to my gate which today was A82 which is a bus-gate downstairs. There´s also a "B" and a "C" gate in the same room and on the B-gate there is a SK flight to CPH and in the C-gate there is a EW flight to Valencia.

http://i669.photobucket.com/albums/vv57/parton87/Dusseldorf/P1010747800x600.jpg

30 min before departure boarding started and we walked to the bus. We had to wait for 10 min for remaining pax and after that the doors was closed and we were on the way to our plane parked on a remote stand.

Again op by Eurowings http://i669.photobucket.com/albums/vv57/parton87/Dusseldorf/P1010755800x600.jpg

An AB A320 parked next to us:
http://i669.photobucket.com/albums/vv57/parton87/Dusseldorf/P1010753800x600.jpg

Today´s load was 47 pax of 48 seats, very good. I wonder if loads are the same on SK´s 737-600´s?
Boarding was quick and the doors was closed and the F/A´s started their safety demo.

View from my seat 14A:

After the F/A´s finish their safety-demo nothing happened fro 10 min. Then the Captain came over the PA and tells us that the A/C have to be de-iced and it´s and a long line so it´s needless to start the engines and burn a lot of fuel just waiting for our turn.
After 15 minutes the engines was started and we started a long taxi to the de-ice position just before runway 05L, the active runway.
There was a LH A330 and a BA A320 in front of us so we had to wait some time before it was our turn to be de-iced.
The de-icing was quick on this little plane and we soon started to taxing the short way to runway 05L.
After a long take-off roll we climbed quit steep and shortly a lot of sharp turns to both the right and left.

No pictures on take-off and landing since I have the FA seated almost next to me. Her jumpseat was stowed next to the lavatory-door.

About 5 min into flight the seat-belt sign was turned off and the F/A´s started their cabin-service. There was two female F/A´s on this flight. One senior very friendly and one younger not that friendly. On today flight we get a turkey sandwhich which tasted very good. I took a glass of white wine and coffee the same as the outbound flight and a glass of applejuice later on when they make a second drink-round

http://i669.photobucket.com/albums/vv57/parton87/Dusseldorf/P1010764800x600.jpg

First picture after take-off:

A cabin-picture:
http://i669.photobucket.com/albums/vv57/parton87/Dusseldorf/P1010761800x600.jpg

The Captain came over the PA when we had reached our crusing altitude of 29000 feet and welcome us onboard and wish us a nice flight. No route-info.

In crusie:

Passing CPH Airport:

About 30 min before arrival we started our descent towards ARN.

A couple of minutes before landing in snowy Sweden:
http://i669.photobucket.com/albums/vv57/parton87/Dusseldorf/P1010777800x600.jpg

The last pictures before landing, we fly past the airport to land from the north on runway 19R.

We landed at 15.10, one hour late and taxing to terminal 5. Parked at gate 3.
Parked:
http://i669.photobucket.com/albums/vv57/parton87/Dusseldorf/P1010779800x600.jpg

Leaving the A/C:
http://i669.photobucket.com/albums/vv57/parton87/Dusseldorf/P1010780800x600.jpg

http://i669.photobucket.com/albums/vv57/parton87/Dusseldorf/P1010781800x600.jpg

I made the short walk to the arrival-hall. After minutes my bag arrived and I procheed to the Arlanda Express station to catch the train to Stockholm and then by train again to my hometown Karlstad arriving home around 20.00

Conclusion:

Despite the two rather rude F/A´s a liked my first flights with EW. They have a good service for a two hour flight and on such a small plane. The CRJ200 was a nice plane and quit comfortably but two hours was just enough on it

Düsseldorf was a quit nice city with som cool design on their houses  But I think next time I will be go there in the summer. Even if it was a lot warmer than in Sweden the air was very rough and very windy and raining. I also found out that The Eurovision Song contest will be held there after Lena´s victory last year. Anyone knows the reason for this? Berlin or maybe Hamburg seems like a more obvious choice!

Hope you like it! Feel free to comment!

Next adventure will be ARN-HEL-ARN for a a-net meeting flying on DY and KF

Greetings

Hello Robert,

Nice trip report. Photos are of high quality too!

Didn't you feel a little cramped inside the CRJ-200? I once flew a CRJ-100 from Lyon to Birmingham. The flight had a very light load factor but even so it didn't feel like I had a lot of space. I think those Canadairs are fine for flights up to 1 hour but I wouldn't like flying those jets for any longer flights.

Best regards,
Miles

Hi, Robert,

nice pictures and also story, well done.

Congrats to catch the CRJ200, it seems there are very limited days left to see this type in LH/LH regional colours.
STR regional operations is nowadays completely switched to the Cityline CR7 and the Contact F100.

Also nice location pictures, been there for several times, but summer only, you know.

Looking forward to you´re next experience together with the upcoming meeting.

Greetings,
Markus(FLIEGER67)

Thanks again

Hi Robert,

Nice to see this report online after your sneak preview at FB  . A good idea to catch a CRJ-200 before they all are gone - LH at least is retiring the type quite soon, methinks. Those are interesting little birds - not very optimal for passenger comfort, but a 50-seater jet is still something a bit special. Luckily I have two flights con Cimber examples coming up later this month...

That's for balance reasons - these small planes (both turboprops and regional jets) are quite sensitive to how the weight is distributed around the cabin, so to achieve an optimal centre of gravity for the plane passengers regularly get reseated. On airlines with assigned seats it should IMHO be done at check in, but on airlines with free seating policy you encounter this quite often - for example with Finncomm on lightly loaded domestic flights.

Might be a diversion, although the weather looks far too good for that. Recently FR has been operating quite a few flights for EI ex-DUB (I guess this is due to some strike action going on by the EI cabin crew), so maybe it is actually operating for them.

Hello Miles!

Nice trip report. Photos are of high quality too!

Thank you very much!
Quoting amsspot (Reply 4):
Didn't you feel a little cramped inside the CRJ-200? I once flew a CRJ-100 from Lyon to Birmingham. The flight had a very light load factor but even so it didn't feel like I had a lot of space. I think those Canadairs are fine for flights up to 1 hour but I wouldn't like flying those jets for any longer flights.

Yes, I did. The first hour was OK, but the rest was quit uncomfortable, there were no room to stretch out, specially not when you have someone seated next to you. But what surprised me was the quit cabin even seated in the rear. I have always imagine the CRJ200 being a very noisy plane but it really wasn´t!

Greetings
Robert

Anyone knows why a FR 737-800 is here?

I was on that FR 738 bound for DUB, they were operating it for Aer Lingus due to the strike they recently had. I was also quite "shocked" to bord a FR plane in DUS. Our return fligth was luckily on an Monarch A321.

Cool TR btw!

Cheers, Tommi

Hello Markus!

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Reply 5):

nice pictures and also story, well done.

Thank you!

Congrats to catch the CRJ200, it seems there are very limited days left to see this type in LH/LH regional colours.
STR regional operations is nowadays completely switched to the Cityline CR7 and the Contact F100.

Yes, I was looking on some flights via DUS in April and then LH´s website shows a CRJ900 op ARN-DUS! So maybe this was the last chance!

Robert

I'm sorry, but I laughed when I read this. I have a vision of a bent-over 80 year old woman.

Thanks for introducing me to Dusseldorf with your very interesting trip report.

So no Jumbo for you even this time?

No, not this time either.

Quoting FlyingFinn76 (Reply 8):
That service is on my todo list for later this year probably - wanna join me?

Yeah, sure. When?
Quoting FlyingFinn76 (Reply 8):
That's for balance reasons - these small planes (both turboprops and regional jets) are quite sensitive to how the weight is distributed around the cabin, so to achieve an optimal centre of gravity for the plane passengers regularly get reseated. On airlines with assigned seats it should IMHO be done at check in, but on airlines with free seating policy you encounter this quite often - for example with Finncomm on lightly loaded domestic flights.

Maybe thats the reason. But usually F/A´s use to handle this right?

Quoting FlyingFinn76 (Reply 8):
...too bad it is Warsteiner. Or have they changed the brand?

I´m not sure really
Quoting FlyingFinn76 (Reply 8):
Hey, see you in three weeks!

Yes, it will be fun!

Strange that Aer Lingus turnes to FR since they are their biggest rival

Hi Robert

thanks for the nice write up. Congrats with these 2 CRJ200 flights. Indeed hard to get nowadays. For sure this CRJ is the most uncomfortable one around, very cramped and narrow seating. I don't like it, to be honest. On the other hand, the CRJ700/900 are very nice rides usually.
Dusseldorf is a good choice. From Amsterdam just 2 hours by car and I regularly go there for a break or some shopping.

The FR 738 is probably for EI indeed but otherwise it can also be a diversion from nearby NRN for some reason.

Regards
Eric

Hi Robert,

nice report about your trip to DUS. The CRJ100/200 is quite okay, I like it much better than the ERJ.

Quoting parton87 (Thread starter):
Actually it´s a third "option" also, flying from Stockholm-Skavsta to Düsseldorf-Weeze on FR but that was not too tempting

Can FR be ever tempting?

Thank you. I have actually never flown on the smalle ERJ´s only the 170 and 195 which of course can´t compare to the smaller ones. But I would like to fly a small ERJ someday. I like the look of the ERJ 135, I like shorter a little bit of chubby planes, I think the CRJ200 is better looking than the CRJ900 for example.

No, I dont think so
