Love At First Sight: An Emirates Story From AMS

Introduction



Namasté fellow A.netters,

Last year upon returning from our summer holiday in Indonesia, my partner and I looked forward to enjoying Indian summer in Netherlands. Well, what a wishful thinking of us! The autumn turned out to be cold, cloudy and wet!

Being spoilt by the Indonesian weather, we decided that we should have to take refuge elsewhere for well needed extra sun rays, preferably on a destination with minimum day temperature of twenty two Centigrade’s. Our plan was to get away somewhere in November or around the Christmas. But due to commitments, we could just get around to it not earlier than this year on February.

In the first instance, we were thinking about spending holiday on the Canaries. The only thing was that the islands’ historical temperatures did not look too promising in the desired period. Hence we had to refocus our plan beyond Europe.

Fellow A.netters Ojas and Sandeep (AI151) suggested a brilliant idea, ‘If the Indian summer did not come to us, why did we not go get it ourselves? So India, here we come!’




Travel arrangement




Fox Vakanties



Since India was unknown to us, we decided to enlist the services of Fox Vakanties, a Dutch tour operator whose individual arrangement caught our attention. The arrangement was nicely put together except for included KLM return flight in Economy. We were not too keen of the KL flight and made an inquiry of the arrangement without it. Anosh, I hope you do not take offence at our decision.

Fox replied the following day that we were entitled to a significant discount for not using KL segment. We happily agreed and booked the KL-less arrangement. Our booking confirmation was rounded off the following day so that we could proceed to tie up our flight itinerary.



Visa application



About six weeks before our departure, two pairs of an undertaking and an Indian visa application form for each of us were delivered by mail by Fox.

Fox urged us to fill out both forms and send them back along with our passports, employer’s testimonials and the copies of our bank statements by registered mail. It had been a long time that we had to surrender our passports. I must say, I was not really comfortable with the idea. Luckily, as customers we could consult our inquiry status online.

Less than four weeks before our departure, we learned that our Indian visas were issued and ready for collection on our departure day at Fox airport desk. However since my partner would be in the neighborhood of the Fox headquarter anyway for business, I dropped an e-mail whether he could stop by to collect our passports.

Fox replied the following day that it was possible and they would notify us as soon as our passports were returned to the headquarter.

Almost one week further and still no message, my partner urged me to ring Fox. Well, what do you know? Our passports were already there at the headquarter. Well Fox, what a missed opportunity to lead us. Anyway, it did not matter. I was delighted to have my passport decorated with the Indian visa.

EK is popular among us, A.netters. Airpearl, Vivek, Roni, Mark and Abrelosojos have posted their experience with the airline’s Business Class.

After all above-mentioned extensive and delightfully written reports, I was wondering what else I could tell you about the EK’s J product.

However, Roni’s call on Dancing In The Dark: An Emirates A380 Inaugural… (by ronerone Oct 24 2010 in Trip Reports) stuck in my mind, ‘Come on Suryo! Fly Emirates!’

You know what? He talked me into it.  

The EK website is nicely laid out without being overkill and hence easy to navigate. EK has developed interfaces for each country on her network in English and local language whenever possible. In addition, features like special offers and payment methods are each customized to the countries.

I flicked through both Dutch and German websites several times earlier, but just recently became a first time user of EK online ticketing. So, what do I think of it? Well, let see what I have found out.

Firstly, you are able to book different travel classes on a single itinerary and choose to pay cash or by Skymiles on the same step. Secondly, once you decide to pay with credit card, the payment can be done in some eight different currencies. At this stage, seat selection is not available yet. But wait!

Once your tickets are issued, you just have to log into ‘Manage a booking’ to find out what you are entitled to.

It is not only about viewing or printing out your itinerary. What do you think of (re)editing your seat selection or making a request for an instant upgrade in case you have sufficient Skymiles? How about updating your API, submitting meal request or booking a chauffeur-driven car to the airport? Oh, do you need pre-arranged UAE visa? Just apply online here for the visa. To round it off, the above-mentioned features turned out to be accessible as well from Skywards member page and the other way around.

I have been a member of Emirates Skywards already, but not my partner. So, I went ahead to apply him for a Skywards membership, but the online application somehow remained unsuccessful after several attempts.

I contacted the nearest Skywards call center to Netherlands. In Manchester that is to say!

After holding the line for two minutes, I got attended by Mr. Rommel, a Skywards call center agent, who processed my partner’s application straight away and issued a membership number.
“An e-mail with password will be delivered on your mailbox within five or ten minutes,” he said.
I thanked him for his assistance and checked the mailbox as soon as I hung up. The e-mail showed up just after two minutes. Well done, EK!  

After changing the temporary password, my partner was directed to the secured personal page. Unfortunately, he found out that one of his names was misspelled. It was not a huge problem. Just a letter too many.

I called back the call center and got a female agent on the phone instead of Mr. Rommel.

When I notified her about the mistake, she replied to my unpleasant surprise, “Sir, you have to fax a copy of his passport to our call center in Dubai. Then, you have to notify us in Manchester that you have sent a fax so that we can revise your partner’s name,”
I repeated her statement just to make sure that I did not misunderstand her.
“That is correct, Sir,” she confirmed.
“Shall I get my partner to talk to you?”
“All right, Sir,”

My partner quickly took over the conversation and tried to convince the agent to honor the request.
It did not seem that easy as I heard him raising his voice several times, “It was only one letter which is not supposed to be there! My application has been taken care of by Mr. Rommel just half an hour ago!”
At one stage, my partner was put on hold. The agent was likely to go to verify with Mr. Rommel.
When she got back after quite a while, I noticed from the expression on my partner’s face that his request was eventually met.

As soon as he hung up, we checked out his personal page and gladly concluded that matters were indeed sorted out.

‘Schiphol! It has been ten months ago!’ First thing borne in mind as soon as I entered Schiphol Plaza on the arrival level. It was fairly empty at the time of the day.

The magazines called on me somehow to take them along and almost won over me.
But, ‘No!’ I thought, ‘I am not flying with GA today, so I do not deserve you. Even how much I really want you,’

While turning back, a silhouette with a distinctive red hat and flowing white scarf about the cream-colored robe reminded me of one of the main purposes of our trip.

There were basically two lane entrances with the left one for the premium passengers and the wider right one for Economy class passengers. The EK supervisor made sure that everyone joined the check in line through the right entrance.
“Business class?” she asked as we approached.
We nodded and she waived us on.
There were one First Class desk and two combined desks for Business Class and Skyward tier members. We lined up at the combined desk on the left. There was one passenger before us.

We did not have to wait long and were soon called forward. I put our single joint suitcase on the balance. It indicated 17 kilograms. Not bad for two people traveling together!
My partner in the meantime handed over our travel documents to be processed.
“I see that Delhi is your final destination,” the check in agent noticed.
“That is correct,” we replied.
“Have you been in India before?”
“No, it will be our first time,”
“Then, it is alright. Otherwise you would just be allowed to reenter India after two months,”
“Yes, we are aware of it,”
The agent proceeded to tag our suitcase and print our boarding stubs.
“Here are your boarding passes which also serve as your lounge invitation,” the agent said while returning our documents. “Do you know the way to the lounge?”
“Not yet. But we will find out,”
“Your lounge is the Servisair lounge. After the passport control, there is a staircase on your right. Just go up and walk down the corridor. Your lounge is the third lounge on the left,”
“Thank you,”
“Have a nice flight,”

“Sirs, this way please,” another EK supervisor who just joined the party, showed us the direction to the entrance as soon as we left our check in desk.

The whole process until the passport control went delightfully smooth. We were airside in the matter of seconds! Well, there was practically no one around. Presumably due to the non holiday season.

‘All right! Is there anything we need from the Duty Free before dropping in on the lounge?’
My partner and I figured out that despite the information we got about our individual arrangement, we had no idea about India. Besides, I was about to run out empty pages on my notebook. Hence, we decided to do the shopping at one of the outlets.

Then, it was lounging time! I surely appreciated the check in agent showing us where to go. But as long as you observe the signage carefully, you will not get lost.

Servisair seems to count most Star Alliance members among her clients except for Singapore Airlines which runs her own lounge. By the way, I found it interesting to notice Malaysia Airlines on the list. I would expect MH to house her premium passengers in KL’s Crown Lounges instead.

There were three lounge agents on duty at the reception. All were busy as we walked in. But, we got attended soon by the agent sitting on the right.

As we were waived through, I looked around for free window seats but none was available. So we had to take a seat at the emptier middle section. The longer part of the L-shaped sitting area is facing the tarmac.

The longer sitting area is divided in two areas with different furnishing. The bistro style area is located right across the reception. We were seated in the area with dark leather couches.

The short sitting area is practically facing the only flat screen in the lounge. This secluded part might feel private for some. But it would not be my first choice, especially at an airport!

As we settled ourselves at two adjoining couches, I went exploring the food and beverage offering. I immediately noticed the division of the long bar with cold beverages and snacks and the warm beverage corner on the opposite.

Body scanners



Believe it or not, I was thrilled to sample the body scanner. You know why? Once you are inside the scanner cabin, you have to raise both your arms and hold it above your head while an anonymous photo is being taken. Similar to the posture of Shakira while shaking her hips on her music video clips.

However, the security officials were quite sensitive about it. I managed to make a picture discretely. But, one passenger was rapped on the knuckles for doing the same. So, I put away my camera for a while until we passed the security.

With a slight delay due to a passenger before us leaving liquids lying about inside his backpack, we were allowed through. No, I did not shake my hips inside the cabin!

Luckily, we could find two adjoining empty seats among the crowd. I was rather unhappy with the sunscreens as it prevented me for watching the aircraft movements outside. Fortunately, there was a gap between the screens to allow me a slight view out of the holding area. I got thrilled by the sight of this beautiful sunbathing B777-300ER.



A6-EBK, my first EK to be!



It was 13.50. Ten minutes past the advised boarding time. We started to wonder whether we would be departing on time.

At 14.00, an announcement was about to come, most people started to gather their belongings but ended up moaning after hearing, “Unfortunately, we cannot board the aircraft yet. We kindly ask you to wait about ten minutes. We will update you,”

An update materialized after another five minutes, “Our technicians are still busy with trouble shootings. Unfortunately, we will need another half an hour to get the matters resolved,”
Sighs and moans echoed around us.

Normally, I would not mind waiting. Only the darn sun screens did not make things any better. I liked the glimpse of A6-EBK, but capturing other airliners would have been nice as well.

There was a single coin operating internet station at the gate, but no one used it. Was it broken down?

At 14.40, the gate agent came on the microphone, “We are still testing at the moment. After five minutes, we will be informing you more about the status,”



Boarding



At 14.45, the gate agent saved the situation by saying, “We will start boarding within ten minutes. We would like to call forward our passengers with special needs and families with children. Then, we would like to ask our First and Business class passengers to go on board. Finally, our Economy class passengers are welcome to get on board,”

Almost everyone responded to the call and quickly lined up. The line was soon divided in two, one each on the left and on the right. We took the right one.

The two gate agents in charge tried to observe the boarding sequences, nevertheless they had to let go some pushing forward passengers.

On our turn, the agent tore our boarding passes and hold the longer stubs on the reader.
“Have a pleasant flight,” she said while returning the smaller stubs.
I got excited as I walked down the air bridge.

It was quite odd to see only one air bridge deployed for a big bird like A6-EBK. Anyway as the golden cheat line along the entrance door came closer, my excitement was getting stronger.

Complimentary newspapers in Dutch, English and Arabic were provided before the entrance. Nice gesture, but not for me. I was kind of busy at that moment.

“Good afternoon, Sir. How are you?” Charming Egyptian FA Rafat greeted me at the door.
“I am fine, thank you. And how about you?”
“I am fine too. It is nice to have you on board, Mr. Akhmad,” Rafat replied after a glance at my boarding stub. “Your seat is located right behind the wall on the left,”
“Thank you,”

Behind the wall, the interior of forward J cabin was revealed. The seats were different to what I was used to inside a J cabin, but somehow the large reclining Sicma Aero seats blended very well with the dotted wooden patterned window frames.

A large pillow and a wool blanket were placed on each seat. Interestingly, all in flight entertainment screens stuck out during boarding. While wondering whether such was belong to the EK’s standard boarding procedure, I let the interior sink in.

I immediately noticed the two seatback pockets. The upper one contained a plastic cover with magazines and a bottle of mineral water.

Once I settled myself, I was getting used to my shelter. Despite the 2-3-2 arrangement across, it did not feel cramped. The legroom might only be 46 inch, but at the upright position, I only noticed tiny difference with the one at 60 inch, for instance. Oh, the smiling EK lady on my screen was soothing by the way.

As we stowed our screens, I realized that the dotted wooden pattern of the window frames was applied as well on the armrests. I must say, it looked gorgeous!

Not long after, Liesel came to our row.
“Excuse me, Sirs. Please allow me to check your entertainment screens,”
“Sure,” We lifted our glasses, though a bit puzzled.
Liesel proceeded to pull our screens, examined the screen display and stowed them back.
“It is alright. Thank you for your cooperation,”
“You are welcome,”
Then, I thought I knew what was all the previous trouble shooting all about. Something must have gone wrong with the IFE. I hoped that the matters were indeed resolved.

Rafat dropped in with an array of newspapers on a large silver tray with nicely carved edges. Though I was impressed by the presentation, I declined his offer. So did my partner.

Comfort pack, another takeaway item, was passed. It was not like the amenity bag I was used to, but I was aware of it. I will reveal the content further on this report.

At 15.40, UK purser Deborah came on the microphone. “We kindly ask all ground staffs to leave. Our aircraft is bound for Dubai,”
I counted nine passengers in the J forward cabin. F cabin remained empty.

Five minutes later, Captain Sieferlandsch introduced himself on the microphone. I did not expect to hear from him that soon and missed out flight details except from the weather in Dubai at 23 Centigrade and that we would be ready for push-back within ten minutes.

Indeed, A6-EBK started moving backwards at 15.45 while her GE90 engines came gradually to life. In the meantime, in flight safety video was broadcasted.

At those moments, I got rather unhappy with the J seat design. The Y passengers were blessed with their seatback IFE screens. Besides, it looked like that I had chosen the wrong side as there was no activity out of the window. Oh well, perhaps I could explore what was inside the plastic cover.

Take off



A6-EBK lined up and waited for a while. After couple seconds as the GE90 engines were roaring, A6-EBK started to move, gradually accelerate and thunder down Kaagbaan revealing the sight of the cargo terminals.

As the fasten seat belt signs were switched off, Deborah came on the microphone to advise us to keep our seat belts fastened and typically EK, introduced her colleagues, “We proudly present you the languages spoken by our multinational crew members. English, German, Italian, Tagalog, Arabic, Serbian, Russian, Spanish, African and Ukrainian,”

As the curtains between F and J cabin were drawn, I continued with my exploration.

I was absorbed in my exploration that I did not notice what our neighbor at 7D was doing. My partner told me afterwards that Mr. 7D was showing off with his iPad, Blackberry, Macbook and Lacoste shoes. He was kind of using the gadgets in our direction and having the Lacoste logo facing our side. After several minutes, he put his gadgets away and made himself occupied with the in flight entertainment.

Laarnie emerged with a drink trolley. She was in charge of our side, while another Egyptian FA Ahmed was in charge of the other side. It was time for aperitifs and canapés.

Both my partner and I had decided nothing yet . We quickly leafed through the menu.

“Good afternoon, Sir. Can I offer you anything to drink?” Laarnie smiled which made me melt right away.
“Can I have Bloody Mary, please?”
“Certainly, Sir. And how about you, Sir?” Laarnie turned to my partner.
“Can I have Chivas Regal, please?”
“Single or double?”
“Just single to start, please,”
“Certainly, Sir,”
I kept my eyes open at Laarnie and was amazed how she knew exactly where the ingredients were located in her trolley. She pulled one of the drawers for a small bottle of Vodka and proceeded with another drawer to reveal a bottle of Tabasco and a bottle of Worchestire sauce. Vodka was poured in a glass, followed by a dash of each Tabasco and Worchestire sauce, a pinch of salt and pepper. Finally, she topped off the mixture with tomato juice, a slice of lemon and some ice cubes.
“Here you are, Sir. Do you want to have canapés or nuts to go with it?” Larnie asked me.
“The canapés, please,”
“Certainly, and how about you, Sir?”
“Also the canapés, please,” My partner replied.
“Certainly, Sir,”

After serving our canapés along with a folded napkin, Laarnie continued with the preparation of my partner’s drink. Apparently, whisky on the rocks is the EK’s standard preparation on board as she put some ice cubes before pouring the whisky.
“Oh, no ice, please!” My partner’s remark caught Laarnie by surprise.
She was about to remove the ice cubes out of the glass, but eventually put the glass aside and fill another glass.

The canapés consisted of three mini open sandwiches. Salty surimi salad on whole meal bread, salmon and tasty combination of a pineapple slice on chive brie cheese on white bread. Lovely bites all together.

We already made up our mind, but browsed through the menu once again just in case.

‘Oops, my bad! I was not decided yet on that one!’ I thought on the contrary to my partner. ‘Let me see…’

“Sir, if you want to watch television, you can pull your screen,” Laarnie made to my amazement our screen ready for use one by one.“Your entertainment control unit is located on the opposite under your armrest,”
At the end, I could only said, “Thank you,”

Chirpy Deborah emerged to check on everyone in our cabin. Occasionally, she had a chat with her passengers. Again, I was impressed by her enthusiasm during the action and barely realized that she walked to our direction.
“Are you alright?” Deborah asked with her caring voice.
“Oh yes,“ I blushed a bit. “It is lovely!”
Deborah satisfyingly smiled and carried on.

As Deborah went out of sight, I noticed my partner having trouble with his screen. The system did not seem to respond on his command. It apparently had been going on for a while.

He was kind of giving up by the situation when an announcement came, “Due to problems with our in flight entertainment, we will have to reboot the system within fifteen minutes,”
Indeed, the problems were resolved after fifteen minutes!  
‘Well, I think I will listen to my favorite artist now!’ I thought.

Lunch service was about to start as Rafat appeared on our side to set our tables. Laarnie was in charge of serving meal trays.

The trays were prepared beforehand. The basic setting consisted of a water glass, a butter dish, a pair of pepper and saltcellar, cutlery set, a side plate for your choice of bread and a seasonal salad bowl. Your starter would be placed right before serving.

After wishing “Enjoy your meal,” Laarnie returned to the galley.

While my partner started to take a bite of his meal, I could not help looking at the my tray set once again. I must say, the EK logo nicely decorated the utensils.

‘Alright, Suryo! Do not forget to eat!’ I thought by myself at one stage.

Though it was my first time savoring Beef Wellington, I was not disappointed. Though served cold, the meat did not lose its tenderness. In fact, it was a delightful combination with the sweet and spicy apple pepper sauce. I washed down the whole experience with soft and fruity Spanish red. Awesome!

My partner seemed enjoying his meal as well. He said his Chardonnay was lovely.

Some thirty minutes later, as we were finished with our starters, Rafat cleared up our starter dish and offered a second bread serving. We politely declined it as we did not want to stuff ourselves too early.

Laarnie soon emerged with the trolley. Reasonably by using pincers as the main course was served piping hot , she placed the crockery at each of our trays. A third bread serving followed.

The lamb dish was another masterpiece! A medley of juicy meat, fully flavored vegetable and spicy rice. Along with the Spanish red, what a joyful Mediterranean sensation which I enjoyed at every bite.

Half an hour further, Rafat collected our trays and set our table for the last course.

What intrigued me more, was that we were not asked what we would like to have for dessert when our trays were collected.

Well, I did not mind the wait for a while for the next course after such copious meal. I kept myself occupied by listening to the music and gazing at the outside scenery.

The presentation caught me by surprise. It was my first time seeing a dessert trolley on board for the first time! I did not expect to see the dessert, the cheese and the fruit displayed all together. I was deeply impressed! Laarnie and Rafat were in charge of our side, while Deborah and Ahmed took care of the opposite.

While Laarnie was attending the row before us, Rafat offered us Godiva chocolates from a big box.

“Certainly, Sir. And how about you, Sir?” Laarnie turned to me.
Normally, I am not into desserts. But at that time, how could I possibly refuse?
“For me the chocolate sponge, please. I will go for the Port wine as well,”
“Certainly, Sir,”

As Laarnie started to prepare our orders, I was amazed on how careful and fast Laarnie prepared my partner’s cheese plate.

To be honest, I could not remember my reply at that time. Laarnie suggested me one sauce. I was hypnotized by which I just said ‘Yes’.

To my surprise, Laarnie offered me the same fresh fruit plate as my partner’s while I could not remember whether I ordered it earlier. But it did not matter at all! On the contrary, I liked her gesture.

My dessert overview



You know what? I did not regret my decision to do the desserts. The sponge was heaven. Its soft substance was literally melting in my mouth. Not too sweet with creamy note which got emphasized by the buttery sauce. No, I still cannot figure out whether it was the mascarpone or the white chocolate one.

What about the fruit plate? I must say, I was grateful of Laarnie for that. It was exceptionally fresh, especially the strawberry! Hmmm…   
And the port? It was a revelation for me to have it on board. I regretted that I did not follow Anosh’s example earlier on this one.

We ordered a digestive as the finishing touch of this remarkable lunch. Look how we were immersed with the soothing purple cabin light.

After distribution of hot towels, the cabin lights were dimmed. Most passengers arranged their seats in the reclined position, unwrapped their comfort packs and tried to take a rest, including my partner.

A6-EBK hit some turbulence while I was on my way to the aft Y cabin. The fasten seat belt signs were illuminated.
I got tapped on my shoulder. “Sir, please return to your seat and keep your seat belt fastened,”
I complied and returned to my seat. My partner was sleeping when I got back. Well, kind of. As he told me afterwards, he could not catch any sleep due to the awkward angle of the lie position of his seat.

Somehow, I got so thirsty while waiting for the turbulence to pass off that I finished off the whole bottle of my mineral water in one draught. My thirst was not lessened yet, but I did not hit the call button on purpose.

As soon as the fasten seat belt signs were switched off again, I went to the galley. At that time, Liesel was having a chat with her Ukrainian colleague, Iryna. Under the cloak of asking another bottle of mineral water, I entered into a connection with them. Iryna was apparently in charge of Y cabin as I did not see her around earlier. Liesel gladly complied with my request about our flight details, while Iryna excused herself to return to her station.

Liesel and I had a chit chat quite a while. When it came to her eight year employment by EK, Liesel told me that she was about to make a different carrier move by attending a master chef class in her home country.

Duty called for Liesel. I thanked her for her time and made my way to the aft Y cabin to retake an unaccomplished mission earlier. First stop was the middle Y cabin.

As I entered the J galley, Liesel was in company of Deborah, Ahmed, Laarnie and Rafat. I took that opportunity to thank them all for delivering the great service and delicious food so far.
“Thank you so much for your feedback. We truly appreciate it,” Deborah said on behalf of her colleagues. “Do you have any suggestion to make our service even better?”
“Actually no. It has been wonderful,” I replied. “I would say, just keep it up this way!”
“Thank you,”
“I have a request though! Can I have a picture with all of you?”
“Sure, no problem!” said Deborah. “Guys, come closer. We are having a picture together!”
What an enthusiasm! I was happy to see Deborah encouraging her colleagues to join the party.

Too bad, we could not have our chit chat too long. The beverage run before landing had to be done. I thanked Deborah, Ahmed, Laarnie, Rafat and again Liesel before returning to my seat.

Once I stepped into the forward cabin, I had to look above somehow.

My partner was awake as I got seated. Not long after, Laarnie appeared on our side.
“Can I offer you anything to drink? I have got orange juice or pineapple juice,”
“Orange juice, please,” Both my partner and I replied.

One hour before touchdown, the cabin lights were illuminated, followed by an announcement that we would be landing in DXB within thirty minutes.

Rafat distributed hot towels as Laarnie collected the blankets, headsets and pillows. Deborah in the meantime passed the fast track cards. What a cooperation!  

After clearing the glasses of the last beverage run , the cabin got prepared for the landing. Fasten seat belt signs were switched on.

The cabin lights were gradually dimmed.



Landing (UAE time)



Due to the crowded DXB airspace, A6-EBK was put in a holding pattern. We had to circle around for another half an hour. By that time, I got unhappy again with my seat configuration as I could not use the IFE during the wait.

Finally after some twenty five minutes, Captain Sieferlandsch saved the situation by saying, “Cabin crew, please prepared for landing,”

A6-EBK made the very last turn as the whining GE90’s stabilized her in the landing position.

Seconds before touchdown



The wheels hit the 12L-30R runway at 01.25. Full brakes were immediately applied as A6-EBK had to vacate the runway as soon as possible.

What was coming up, was a long trek of ten minutes to our gate somewhere at DXB Terminal 3.

At 01.35, A6-EBK came to a stop. Unbuckling sound of seatbelts echoed as the cabin got brightened. Everyone gathered his belongings including us and got prepared for disembarkation.



Disembarking



Unlike in AMS, both air bridges of B23 were deployed. As 2L door was located right behind the forward J cabin, we were lining up in the direction.
“I think, the front door got opened first,” Laarnie drew our attention to 1L.
As I looked back, I saw some passengers indeed were disembarking.
“Thank you,”

We walked past the unused F cabin towards 1L.

Somehow, I did not regret not flying F on board of A6-EBK.

Up front I noticed Deborah, Liesel and an another colleague of theirs standing at the door opening to say their passengers goodbye.
I got the feeling I just had to express my gratitude for the last time.
“Thank you so much for everything,” I said as I shook the hands of Deborah, Liesel and their colleague.
Deborah and Liesel grinned while I could hear their colleague whispering, “Oh, that is so sweet!”
That last remark gave me such a warm feeling.

Welcome to Roni’s home, I mean, EK’s!



There were EK ground attendants at the end of the corridor holding up papers towards possible connecting passengers of our flight.
“Passengers for Karachi, this way please!”
“Passengers for Kuwait, please follow me!”
Their instructions for a quick transfer echoed as we trickled in. It was not surprising as the status of these destinations showed ‘Final Call’.

Well fellows, this is where our inaugural EK journey from AMS ended. At EK’s home base!




Conclusion



Experienced EK travelers among us might ask me what I thought about EK? In brief, EK exceeded my expectation and I was deeply impressed!

What about the delay? Oh, that one. Would I do justice to make a fuss about it after the perfect treatment from Deborah, Laarnie, Rafat, Liesel and Ahmed? I think you know my answer.

What about the enrollment of my partner into Skywards? Yes, it should have not been that cumbersome. But again, it was not such a big deal at the end. Look what we have got in return. All web features we could imagine.

Anything else? No, nothing else than to express my gratitude for joining me along and my hope that you have enjoyed my report.

77L was previously scheduled for this flight. But it got swapped with a 77W.

It sounds logical. I assume EK has taken the congestion into account for the published flight duration. I would not mind the wait, but it felt longer without any entertainment.

What an absolutely excellent report you made this time, I recon it's your best so far. Keep up the good work! 

I didn't know you needed a visa for entering India, does this apply for all EU passports or only the Dutch? Your Visa issue seemed really scary at first, but it was nice that you managed to sort it out. The idea of sending away the passports weeks in advance only to receive it at the airport on the day of departure seem a bit frightening to me. Couldn't they just have mailed your passports back?

The Servisair Lounge in AMS looked pretty decent, not as nice as EK's own lounges but at least the standard appeared to be up to par with EU industry averege. Normally those non-airline lounges tend to keep their standards low. I found it pretty strange that MH and SU pax weren't allowed to use the KLM Lounge, considering the fact that they're in the same alliance.

Your flight on Emirates looked fantastic, and given the price you paid it's really good value for the money! One thing I found odd though were the seats. Normally when flying a new type like the 77W you'd expect it to be fitted with an up to date product in J i.e flatbeds. The Cradle Seats didn't look that nice to be honest, but I'm sure they must've been comfy! The F seats could've been sold as J IMHO. Do EK have any plans of updating their products on these 77Ws?

The food offerings looked really generous. Meal offerings seemed very generous, all the way from Canapé to Dessert! It looked really delicious too, especially the Beef Wellington. I did however find it a bit strange to have them serve it as a starter, normally you'd expect to have it as a main. I bet Mr. Ramsay is would be furious about that  

Crew seemed fantastic, did you get any signatures from them?

Looking forward to the next part, hope to see it online soon!

With the hearts, EK indicates the healthy menu option. You can also regard it as the way to show her love to her passengers.

The principle is everyone from outside India requires a visa. If my memory serves, only the neighbouring countries are eligible for a visa on arrival. Others like EU countries will have to apply for visa in advance.

I was not too comfortable with the idea as well. We could have arranged the visa ourselves, but then we would have to take at least two days off to submit and recollect our passports since the visas shall not be issued within one working day.

Normally when flying a new type like the 77W you'd expect it to be fitted with an up to date product in J i.e flatbeds.

We were aware of different J configurations on board of 77W. EK is indeed reconfiguring her 77W's J cabins with the lie flat seats. We were kind of hoping that the 77W fitted with lie flat seats would be deployed.

Nice report from you! Looks like you had a really good flight with Emirates. The service and food looks very nice. It's too bad that Emirates has their business class in a 2-3-2 config on the 777; that middle seat just seems to be not good on any plane!
