Cheap Daytrip: ARN-GOT-BMA On DY And TF

Hey there!

This, my second trip i did during my early spring break, is a short roundtrip between Stockholm and Gothenburg, Sweden's second city.

It started out from the cheap offering DY had when introducing their ARN-GOT route, the tickets cost 5 EUR each, after the fees and set selection it ended at about 15 EUR, still a great deal. I selected a morning departure at 8:30 march 8th. I had flown Norwegian a couple of times before, when they flown ARN-KRN.

For my return trip, i looked at some options, but since i didn't have to much money at the time (I'm a student after all!) so i wanted to be home the same day. I looked at some of City Airlines routes to the northern parts of Sweden, taking a quick SK or DY flight back to ARN, but i found the added price abit pricy for my taste at the time.

Then i started looking at Malmö Aviation, a Swedish, mainly domestic, airline with their hub at the old major airport of Stockholm, called Stockholm-Bromma, BMA. They had a BMA-GOT route, and were before DY started their route, the only airline besides SK to have a route between Stockholm and Gothenburg.

I found a good deal for students and youths for 46 EUR on flight CF014 at 14:35, quite a long time for such a small airport, but i decided on it anyway. But right before i booked it, i noticed they had a campaign, selling the same tickets for 39 EUR, quite a bargain if you ask me. Of course i booked this.

This trip would let me try one new airline (Malmö Aviation) and one new airport (Bromma).

March 8th:
I reach Arlanda Terminal 4 about an hour before my scheduled departure at 8:30. I check in quickly using one of DY's self service machines. I decide to go to Sky City for some apron views before going through security. For those of you who don't know Arlanda, Sky City is a glass building squeezed in between terminal 4 and 5, anyone can reach it as it's landside. It contains shops, restaurants and a hotel, and most important: a big wall of glass with the apron on the other side.

Not so much interesting to watch, besides this one:
http://imgboot.com/images/deltamartin/dsc01415.jpg

First time i see the new livery in person.

Next, i head towards security, and i notice that the queue is longer now than when i left a couple of minutes earlier, oh well, the joy of traveling in the morning rush. It ends up not taking so much time and I'm through in under ten mins. Since i still have plenty of time before boarding, I decide to go to to the end of the pier, its right next to runway 01L/19R, and as they are taking off from 19R today, the rotation is just about where I'm standing. I watch some small turboprops and some 737's and an MD80. Nothing interesting, so i head towards the gate at 8:00, the time which my boarding pass claimed boarding would commence. I of course knew that we wouldn't board until probably 15 mins later, but i was bored so i sat down at our gate anyway.
The aircraft is not here yet, but soon the expected 737-300 pulled up to the gate. At 8:15 or so, the status for our flight changes to Go to gate, and a min later boarding is called. The ride today is LN-KKN, first delivered to Sun Express at 1991, a 20 year old bird this is.

I get seated, not the best legroom:
http://imgboot.com/images/deltamartin/dsc01430.jpg

I also notice that the seatbacks are lower than most other seats. Cabin shot:

Another view of the new livery:
http://imgboot.com/images/deltamartin/dsc01432.jpg

Thai's 744 is on gate 18 today (they are almost always on gate 17, where the united aircraft is today):
http://imgboot.com/images/deltamartin/dsc01433.jpg

Then we taxi to the runway and we begin rolling:
http://imgboot.com/images/deltamartin/dsc01435.jpg

And takeoff!
http://imgboot.com/images/deltamartin/dsc01436.jpg

Its cloudy, so views get limited about a minute after takeoff.

I spend most of the flight reading newspapers i grabbed on ARN, and watching out my window. I'm seated on 24F, the second to last row. I have an open seat next to me and an older man on the aisle seat.

There's a BOB cart but few people bother buying anything, me included.

Once we've been airborne for about 30 mins, the sky is clearing up and the ground is once again visible.

South of Sweden's biggest lake, Vänern, descent starts slowly.

We land on runway 21 on schedule.

We taxi to the terminal, and i see this machine, i´ll fly one of those later today.

Some international visitors:
http://imgboot.com/images/deltamartin/dsc01454.jpg

Once we disembark, i head through the jetway, and into the terminal. I get out to the departure hall, and i look around, i haven't visited GOT since i was a little kid, and i don't remember anything from that occasion.
I'm rather surprised about how much activity it is around here, somehow i imagined that it'd be smaller.

Check-in hall:

Decent amount of departures:

After my little sightseeing i go to the domestic departure hall (as in most Swedish airports, it's the same hall as the arrival hall), to check in to my next flight, I do this at a self-service machine. It's very quick and it gives me a boarding pass in the size of a credit card. Fine by me. Then, I head to a Pressbyrån to grab some breakfast (Pressbyrån is kind of like a Swedish version of 7-Eleven). I decide to buy a cheese sandwich and a bottle of juice with Guanabana Pineapple taste (rather good actually). I settle down at a table with some nice apron views, to eat my breakfast. It also has a power socket, so i take my laptop up and connects it.

My breakfast:

My ride to get here:
http://imgboot.com/images/deltamartin/dsc01458.jpg

On the neighboring gate i see this:
http://imgboot.com/images/deltamartin/dsc01459.jpg

First, i thought it was the earlier departure, but as the time passed, i realized it was my plane, it sat there for at least 5 hours!

Wifi is expensive (as every public wifi in Sweden) at 5 EUR for an hour or 14 EUR for 24 hours, since I'm gonna be here for a few hours i decide on buying the latter.
I surf the net for a while and a few mins before twelve o'clock i decide to grab some lunch. I decide on Japanese, since i don't find anything with better value for the money. I buy a Yakuniku and two nigiri with tofu for 8 EUR. The food was okay, not more, since it tastes rather cheap, like premade sauce and microwaved rice etc. Don't have any pictures, since i simply forgot to take any!

After lunch, i figured it was time for me to head through security. It goes smooth, and then I'm ready to head upstairs to the gate area. The domestic terminal is much smaller than the international one. Here's only a small shop and a cafeteria. I decide not to bother. Since it's still a couple of hours before boarding, i look for a place to settle down. I find a funky looking chair in front of a big window with great apron and runway views.

http://imgboot.com/images/deltamartin/dsc01479.jpg

The chair is very practical for me with my computer. I also decided to buy two chocolate bars to eat while waiting.

My chocolates with my plane, SE-DSX:

A better view over the plane:
http://imgboot.com/images/deltamartin/dsc01475.jpg

As time goes, it's soon time to board. I manage to snap a good spot at the self-service boarding pass checker. And I'm the third in that queue as boarding begins. But for some reason, the machine didn't want to scan my boarding pass, so i have to go to the end of the normal queue. This makes my seating options limited, once inside the aircraft. I settle for a window seat right under the wing seat 10F, so engines are making my views limited. I also decide to put my bag under the seat in front of me instead of the overhead bin, since the bins are smaller here underneath the wings.

Cabin shot:
http://imgboot.com/images/deltamartin/dsc01492.jpg

Malmö aviation has a 3-3 layout in their Avros. I've never been in an Avro before, and I've heard that this layout is supposed to be cramped, but i didn't find it uncomfortable at all. Might have been much worse if i had someone sitting in the middle seat though, i only had one in the aisle seat. The seat itself is comfortable and the legroom is decent.

Takeoff:
http://imgboot.com/images/deltamartin/dsc01497.jpg

http://imgboot.com/images/deltamartin/dsc01498.jpg

The flight is rather uneventful, the service consists of a sandwich and water, and coffee and tea. I decide on just taking the sandwich with the water. But since I'm seated in the middle of the plane, there is some confusion between the FA's handing out the sandwiches, and my row only get sandwiches, and no water. Although, they are already gone before i notice this. Oh well.

And about the sandwich, it was a ciabatta with shrimps and mango. I'm not fund of seafood. So i just put it in my bag, and give it to my father when i got home.

http://imgboot.com/images/deltamartin/dsc01506.jpg

Beside the water-mishap, i found the service very good. We even got hot towels, something i have never experienced on a Swedish domestic flight before. And the sandwich, well, they couldn't know what i like and not!

Borås airport ESGE:
http://imgboot.com/images/deltamartin/dsc01502.jpg

And the town of Borås:
http://imgboot.com/images/deltamartin/dsc01504.jpg

The descent started, after something that felt like a faster flight than the westbound one. During the descent, i spotted the town of Södertälje, which meant a landing on runway 30, which is said to be a beautiful approach with great views over Stockholm on the right hand side. And the views sure are breathtaking.

Ferries:

Stockholm Town hall:
http://imgboot.com/images/deltamartin/dsc01524.jpg

Landing is smooth and on time. Bromma seems to be a cozy little city-airport (which i still doubt that Stockholm needs one though!).

Deboarding:

One last look at SE-DSX:

Some pictures of BMA:

http://imgboot.com/images/deltamartin/dsc01538.jpg

http://imgboot.com/images/deltamartin/dsc01540.jpg

The flight on Norwegian was as expected, rather cheap and rather low-service.
Landvetter was a positive suprise. I liked the feeling and good seating possibilities with great apron views, both air side and landside. Rather boring architecture, if i should complain on anything!
Malmö Aviation was over expectation, i liked their service and the price i got with them. I was also positive surprised over my first flight with an Avro. Small plane with a cozy feeling.
That concludes my trip to GOT and back to Bromma.

Nice TR !!!

Not many Swedish domestic flights reported here...

Was looking forward to the Malmoe Aviation part, especially; they don't disappoint me at all, given the short flight !

BMA surely still has the 1950's looks and feel: fantastic !!!

don't throw away tomorrow !

Hi DM,

A very nice report on your low cost trip on this Swedish domestic trunk route. Some nice pictures - looks like the winter is finally loosing its grip in Sweden as well - how I love these sunny late winter days!

You struck a great bargain with both DY and TF - I think the difference in prices reflects the difference in onboard service. TF is a great little airline - I am amazed a the high frequency they manage to keep up on their handful of routes and the very nice onboard service (hey, I love seafood, I would've devoured your sandwich in a second!!  ). The only thing I don't like is the 3-3 seating, it is just way too cramped!

Quoting deltamartin (Thread starter):
on flight CF014 at 14:35, quite a long time for such a small airport, but i decided on it anyway.

Don't you mean TF?

But how come you didn't go to the city of Göteborg for a couple of hours? The flygbussarna are quite frequent, take half an hour or so and aren't too expensive. And it is a very nice city - actually I like it far more than Stockholm - and makes for a great couple of hours of just walking around and watching life, especially around Kungsportavenyn and the harbor. Plus you'd had tons of excellent lunch places to choose from!

I was a bit confused first as mentioning "DY" and "ARN" together automatically maps to ARN T2 in my head but then I realized that this domestic flight actually departed from T4, so yes, you are right - the views are very nice, just the same as from T3 in fact.

What do you know - this plane is in my log as well. It was on the first TF flight I ever flew, UME-BMA back in 2007...

Well, I guess you don't have a reference point then! Try an Avro with 3-2 (with KF for example) and you'll know the difference. And of course having no one in the middle seat helps - just think of having somebody from Bandidos MC or a hockey player and it'd be a completely different kettle of fish...

Quoting deltamartin (Thread starter):
And the views sure are breathtaking.

Oh yeah, agree completely!

Thanks for posting this nice little report.

Well, im studying in Kiruna, so i'll have winter for some time to come!

Yep, just a typo, maybe i saw too many CF flights since i was in GOT!

Well, i've been to the city plenty of times before, used to go there by train. I was actually more looking forward to the airport , so i decided to stay there for the day.

It's quite a watchable movie if you are able to find it in the US - not exactly your standard Netflix material I guess  . See here: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0150662/

I actually had no idea that the expression was also used in common speech - I sort of assumed the movie came up with it.
